S4E39 - Marathon Training - “Forge a meteorite sword”03 Oct 201900:44:13
In This Episode:

Beej is training for a marathon and Void’s mind is boggled at how someone even approaches that.  BJ also picked up a few new Final Fantasy games and grabbed a Fitness Quest game on iOS to help his training.  Void brings some interesting shows and movies to the table with The Wandering Earth and Savage Builds. He also tried out Kind Words and found it surprisingly charming.

S4E38 - Link’s Sayonara Goose Arcade - “Dedicated honk button”26 Sep 201900:53:22
In This Episode:

All the games came out this week! All of them. Each and every one. From the new Link’s Awakening on Switch, the Untitled Goose Game that everyone is talking about, to Sayonara Wild Hearts and all of the dozens and dozens of Apple Arcade games released in the last few days. There’s a ton of Fall game releases to discuss!

And you know what? We discuss them all.

Or at least the ones worth discussing. We dive in pseudo-deep on Link's Awakening because Void hasn't been able to devote a lot of time on it, and Beej's copy of the Dreamer Edition was backordered. We will be sure to discuss it more at length in future episodes.

The Untitled Goose Game is a delight. Without spoiling anything...there's goose who's a jerk, and you get to play as that goose and be a jerk. The puzzles you solve...involve being a goose and a jerk. It's awesome. Everyone should play it.

And then there's the piece de resistance...

Void Played Every Single Apple Arcade Game in 3 Days

Much of the episode is devoted to how many games on the Apple Arcade service (free month trial, then $4.99 USD afterward) are worth playing. We 100% believe that this service is worth the price, if you're interested in mobile gaming and/or have kids and want gacha-less mechanics and some just legit fun games.

We go in depth on Sayonara Wild Hearts, What the Golf?, Various Daylife, Assemble with Care, Over the Alps, The Floor is Lava, Oceanhorn 2, Cat Quest II, Lego Brawls...and so much more.

Like...for real, this particular service is one that we didn't expect to find truly great games on. And we were shocked. If you have been hesitant about the service and been like "nah, I don't like mobile games enough" (like Beej was), then you should listen and give it a shot. Because these aren't "good for a mobile game" games, these are just good games. At least a lot of them are.

S4E36 - The Age of Subscription Models - “I’m drinking subscription water right now”12 Sep 201900:50:09
In This Episode:

We discuss the craziness that is subscription models.  They’re everywhere now from Netflix to tooth brushes to cat food. We went in thinking about subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime.

You know, the stuff that everyone talks about. By the end of the discussion, however, we've realized that so much of what we consider as parts of our daily lives come as subscription services, too. Toothbrushes, kitty litter, even water bottles. We take advantage of the convenience they offer, but it's at a price -- we end up paying for overall than we do if we were picking up the items or products ourselves, individually.

Which is what makes it a successful business model. For games, for media, for physical goods. Our discussion veers wildly but it was super fun to talk about. With Void's background in media studies and marketing, he really fell into discussing the back-end of things and how the subscription model can be better for consumers and for the business -- if it's handled well.

That doesn't mean that having a thousand different subscription services are going to be good for anyone. We discuss a rise in piracy and the potential for burnout and even a return to what the cable companies dealt with in the late 80s and early 90s. It's a great discussion, and it went in directions we didn't think it would.

Weekly Geekery

BJ is getting back into Tennis with some refinished courts near his house, and he signed up for a marathon (a full marathon, no less) an hour before the show. He's going to be running it with Capsulejay and RunRunRosie.

Void is struggling to fit in geeky time, but still managed to watch Alita Battle Angel and check out the previews for Magic The Gathering Throne of the Eldraine set, which combines Grimm's Fairy Tales with Arthurian Legends into something that...just works.

S4E33 - Lessons from Podcast Movement 2019 - “Navel Gazing Hug Attack”22 Aug 201901:03:35
In This Episode:

BJ went to Podcast Movement 2019 and loved it! He got so much from it, and he wants to talk about all the takeaways that he got regarding the industry, being a creator, being a listener, and just how things can move forward in the future.

  • What is Podcast Movement?
    • Podcast Movement is aconference for podcasters and industry professionals. Not so much podcast listeners in every respect, but not always. Everyone there was a listener of some kind, so anyone can get something out of the event.
  • General
    • LaunchPadDM had a puppy pen and it was the greatest marketing ever. Beej tweeted a lot about these dogs. They were amazing.
    • Our genre, “two white dudes talking about video games” is THE biggest joke genre of podcast
    • Aaron Mahnke mentioned how podcast genres are quickly changing. He’s noticed even cooking shows are becoming popular. Usually these are visual media, but people are learning how to do it via audio
    • Most people stream now
    • Millennials tend to cherry-pick episodes
    • Put keywords into description and subtitle (Final Fantasy, Pokémon, Nintendo, etc, not books, movies, video games, and so on.)
    • Subscribing is THE most important rank factor
    • Reviews are social capital and DO work. THey get people to click subscribe.
    • People consider many different things as podcasts, from YouTube videos to livestreams to
    • Voice call-in number
    • Even on rebrands, keep the same RSS feed. Rob did this with Comic Box, and it was a  great move
    • Apparently, Instagram CONVERTS. We need to get better at Instagram.
    • Make an ad, then put it in, share it to the company. If they like it, they might pay. If not, then you can cut it out of the segment and move on.
  • Patreon
    • Unpublish, don’t delete
    • Beej unpublished $1 tier, but it’s still there for folks who are members
    • Talk about it first thing, just as a reminder
    •      (Same for email)
    • Use it as a membership program, not crowdfunding. They have tools for this.
    • 3-5 tiers max, fewer is better. 1-2 works great.
S4E32 - Butterflies Flutterby - “When there’s an app connected to your nightlight you know you’ve strayed too far”15 Aug 201900:38:14
In This Episode:

We discuss butterflies with a special guest host while BJ is away at a conference.  We also touch on houseplants, losing control of your houseplant situation, how many houseplants have snuck into Void’s house without him realizing it, and night lights!

S4E31 - Meditation - “Avoiding the woo-woo with Captain Marvel”08 Aug 201901:01:08
In This Episode:
  • Void Meditation update!
    • I deleted most of my meditation apps except for…
      • Headspace
      • Insight timer
    • Headspace is my preference for guided meditation
    • Insight timer has a ton of free courses and guided meditations but I couldn’t find ones that clicked.  But…
      • Insight timer is great for customizing your own timers and for ambient noise or music choices
      • Timer customization is mainly what I’m doing with it
  • Why meditate?
    • BJ
      • It keeps me from getting overwhelmed with all the things in my life
      • Stressors really hit me hard, even if they’re minor
      • Part of the whole bipolar 2 and severe anxiety thing
      • The biggest lesson that meditation taught me is the idea of “sitting in discomfort” because there are a number of things that seem almost unbearable at times, but learning to meditate and being able to deal with that discomfort in a productive way has made my life better
    • Void - Because I don’t physically relax enough.  Actually, I’m bad at relaxing in general…
      • These days I tend to go pretty much non-stop
        • A normal day for me goes from 5:20am to 8 or 9pm without a break.  Sometimes it goes later if I have work to do at home that I can’t get done in the office.
      • Beej - had a yoga teacher tell us that meditation before yoga is the way to get the mind and body ready for the movement, so that’s right in line with how it helps you
  • Void - I want to be meditating more often than I am but I’m having trouble finding and dedicating the time.  This is the biggest struggle for me.
    • Any tips or tricks BJ?
      • Yes, Of course, lol. I always have opinions
      • Right before I start work, when I need a break, and right before bed. The biggest misconception is that you have to be in a special place. You
S4E30 - Fire Emblem Three Houses Initial Impressions - “No one believes in democracy here”01 Aug 201901:02:10
In This Episode:
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a turn-based strategy RPG, but it’s also totally a game like Persona where it’s just as much about relationships on a one to one level as it is about the battles
  • First time I’ve played FE not on a handheld system
    • Radiant Dawn?
    • There hasn’t been one since the Fire Emblem on the Nintendo Wii
  • Premise
    • Kingdom of Fargus?
    • Lester Alliance?
    • Something Empire?
    • Edelgard
    • Dimitri
    • Claude
    • Three countries on this continent
    • There’s a monastery in neutral ground in the middle of the continent that happens to be the seat of the church and also the training ground for officers from all the different countries
    • The 3 houses in the school correspond to the 3 countries on the continent
    • This year is special because future leaders from each country are all studying at the monastery at the same time
    • You end up there kind of by accident but they make you a professor and you have to pick a house to instruct
  • Houses
    • Blue Lions - Kingdom
    • Golden Deer - Alliance of Nobles
    • Black Eagles - Empire
    • No, they don’t believe in democracy here
  • No weapon triangle (sword, lance, axe)
    • This is probably the biggest initial change to adjust to
  • Quality of Life improvements in battles
    • It’s so much easier to make sure your characters don’t end up somewhere that they’ll get killed because you misjudged distance by one square on the grid
    • It’s limited to only a few times per battle
    • But, you can rewind time to any point in the battle
S6E25 - Steam Deck & Play Date & Games - “I intend to kill some of their characters”26 Aug 202100:49:26
In This Episode:

We hit on a bunch of geekery and game-y topics like D&D, the Haunted Mansion board game, the Backbone One, Cris Tales, Minecraft Dungeons, Pokemon Unite, FFVII Intermission Integrade, Steam Deck, FFXIV Patch Content, Playdate, The Quiet Year, and some random asides.  We’re basically just jumping around to whatever is top of mind while catching up!  And mustarding.

S4E29 - Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 & SDCC MCU Reveals - “Yes, we are recommending a bad game because it's great"25 Jul 201901:04:16
In This Episode:

We go in-depth on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, covering the good and the bad and recommending it all the same. But here's the thing: it's not a very good game, mechanically. But it's a lot of fun and we are loving it, and we think you should play it.

It's junk food. It's like eating movie theater candy. You know it's not great, but you are absolutely loving the experience.

It’s a great low key co-op couch game, but neither of us have played it online co-op. We want to. It just hasn't happened yet. Beej loves it on single-player, but despite having a ton of replayability, a NG+ (and NG++), and more, the real replayability comes in with being able to sit down beside someone and smash stuff.

The Marvel skin goes a long way toward enjoying the game. While it's a fun game on its own, the Marvel skin really ups the appeal. If this were a traditional beat-em-up, it'd be a quick bounce. With the built-in investment, it is a complete and total blast to play.

The gameplay itself is a pretty unpolished, which surprises us because of the press and hype prior to the launch. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a solid game in many ways, but we do have nits to pick.

Here's a quick list:

  • Shared xp between characters not in your party
  • Better difficulty ramps with less spikes. It gets absurdly hard with no warning.
  • Better camera. Just...better. Please.
  • Clearer identification of what’s happening on the screen. It gets so chaotic at times, you have no choice but to button mash and pray.
  • Save character progress when you fail (you have to replay entire sections, and lose XP)
  • More seamlessly integrated challenge mode. The Infinity Rifts and Infinity Challenges reset the game when you enter/exit.
  • Better UI all around. Make the buttons do what you think they're going to do.
  • More interesting upgrades. Right now, it's straight-up stat upgrades.

We do feel that a lot of these issues can be addressed in patches or DLC. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is under a week old as of this episode, and a lot can change.

While MUA3 falls solidly into the trop of "we're paying to beta test a game," we are both still playing the game despite all this, and really having a great time.

Heck, Beej even went out and paid for the DLC season pass within an hour or two despite all this because he likes it so much.

Take that for what you will.

Both of us fall on the side of having similar tastes in heroes, too. Void runsSpider-Gwen, Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, and Venom, abd Beej loves Spider-Gwen, Captain Marvel, and Deadpool, with Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, and Venom alternating in for the fourth sloth.

MCU Roadmap from SDCC 2019

We also recap all the MCU announcements from SDCC and discuss the parts we’re ge

S4E28 - Tabletop RPGs in 2019 - “The Final Boss is… Scheduling!”18 Jul 201900:55:55
In This Episode:

In the beforetime, the long, long ago (season 3), we covered tabletop RPGs. It's 2019, things have changed somewhat, and we wanted to revisit the topic.

Beej has taken up playing Dungeons & Dragons with a local group, mainly with the Adventurer's League. Basically, the AL is the Wizard's sanctioned D&D league where rewards travel over between everywhere, and no matter where you go, you can find a table to play at.

It's a really interesting idea, and it lets newcomers to the game find a game immediately and anywhere. It sure helped Beej.

While Void hasn't really dug into playing tabletop RPGs again, it's been on his mind a lot. He still listens to The Adventure Zone podcast, and it makes him want to play more and more. And since his kids are getting older, they can do more as a family. Which fits directly in with how much he loves TAZ.

He mentions other actual-play podcasts, and he recommends specifically Friends at the Table. Beej has got to try this one sometime.

Scheduling is definitely the hardest part of playing tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. Beej wants to play Star Wars: Edge of the Empire more, but the hard part is finding time when everyone's schedules work together.

Void

Void is trying to find the right approach to playing tabletop RPGs with his kids. They've made D&D characters and have all the books needed to get started. The trouble is taking that first step.

Tabletop RPGs Overall?

One word: intimidated. Two words: intimated and overwhelmed. Okay, that's three, but you get it.

Void feels intimidated to start because it requires energy and time that he's not sure he has enough of right now.

For Beej, the whole thing is kind of overwhelming. He has a lot of stuff going on with family and friends this time of year, has a new foster doggo, so even taking that one extra night for a few hours on a weekly basis is hard to do.

The gaming itself is super fun, though, and the state of tabletop RPGs has really never been better. Someday, we'll get a chance to do that Geek to Geek playcast that we've talked about for years.

Someday.

S4E27 - 2019 Summer Games and Movies - “Mario Maker 2, Spider-Man, Shadowbringers, and More”11 Jul 201901:07:19
In This Episode:

We discuss a bunch of the games and movies that are finally releasing this summer!  We cover things like Mario Maker 2, Spider-Man Far From Home, FFXIV Shadowbringers, Magic The Gathering Arena Core Set 2020, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Stranger Things Season 3, and more.  Plus we sneak in some bonus geekery near the end of the show and Beej gets a new furry friend.

  • Things are finally releasing again!  The late spring / early summer slump looks like it’s over.
  • Mario Maker 2
    • BJ - Making levels is a lot more fun than I thought it would be
  • Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
    • Void forgot that he never really liked the PS1 era of Castlevania games. He is having a decent time with it but thinks he had more fun with the 8-bit version, Curse of the Moon.
    • This feels like a modern iteration of the PS1 era of Castlevania games, so if you really enjoyed Symphony of the Night and want a modern version of that, then you really can't go wrong here.
  • Magic: The Gathering Arena - Core Set 2020
    • Core cards and concepts that relaunch for the year
    • They only use evergreen keywords
    • It’s made to be much more approachable for new players
    • Not as strong of a theme, which made more of an impact on Void than hethought. He didn’t realize how much the theme worked for him in the last few sets until he saw this core set that is basically theme-less.
    • Mastery pass is like a season pass for the mastery tree and gives you bonus rewards
    • Void is a bit less excited now that he sees what the Core Set 2020 is.
      • He was most excited for premade decks because he l

Specifically, though, we wanted to talk about the new Crypt of the Necrodancer game, Cadence of Hyrule. Amazingly, this has made Void's top Zelda games ever list, and he places it somewhere around 2 or 3.

Yes, it's that good.

Even Beej loves this one, and he bounced off Necrodancer hard. The ability to move not to the beat makes this almost a turn-based strategy Legend of Zelda title, and that's amazing.

The boss fights are fun, the puzzle areas are superb, and the procedural generation of dungeons (as well as the layout of the overworld) make this a fairly short Zelda, but one that you actually want to keep playing.

It ditches a lot of the more unforgiving aspects of its predecessor's Roguelike heritage and makes it so that if you die, you're not punished as harshly. It's easy to start right back in and hopping to the beat, digging through some dirt, and smashing Moblins with glass flails.

This game is definitely worth the $25 bucks on the Switch eShop.

BJ’s Geekery this week includes winning a scholarship to Podcast Movement in Orlando this year. He can't wait to meet all the fantastic people at the conference and learn a lot more about the podcasting industry. He played D&D IRL with a group of people he didn't know and learned that local Discord servers help a lot, he and Void both checked out Warrior’s of Waterdeep, and got his first job in the FFV Four Job Fiesta (thief).

Void watched the HBO Chernobyl Miniseries and Gourmet makes from America’s Test Kitchen. He learned that re-making Twinkies is harder than you expect, and that their mere existence brings up existential questions about snack cakes that you weren't aware that you had. He also played Outer Wilds which is a physics-based exploration game that gave him a bit of vertigo. He then went to an actual in-person Magic The Gathering sealed event even though it was accidentally for the wrong set! He still had fun, played 9 games, won some, lost some, and realized that Modern Horizons is just not his set.

S4E22 - Spoiler Culture - “Shouting Spoilers Out Of Car Windows”06 Jun 201900:55:09

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks!

In This Episode:

We discuss... spoilers! No, we're not trying to keep the topic from you. We are talking about how spoiler culture exists today and how radically different people can be when it comes to their reaction to spoilers.

In terms of when we were first introduced to the idea of spoilers and keeping things sacred, so to speak, differed for both of us.

For Void, it was when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released. People would drive around at the book releases yelling what happened out of car windows and trying to ruin everyone else's fun.

For Beej, it was the movie The Sixth Sense when people wouldn't even discuss the movie before asking, "wait, have you seen it yet?" because the twist was such a big deal.

And then there's the idea of not watching trailers or partaking in reviews for fear of spoilers ruining the media for you, whether it's a movie or a book or a video game. While for others, those are the sneak peeks and sometimes extra content that makes the wait for the new thing more enjoyable and great.

Plus, we can't not talk about cultural movements like Game of Thrones or Avengers: Endgame because of the ridiculous way that we all reacted to spoilers. Even Disney was putting out a spoiler embargo until the first two weekends were finished to give people a chance to see it if they were really into the franchise. But then there's GoT where people would spoil the events of the episode while the episode was still airing with the idea that if you weren't watching it when it was on, you didn't care enough not to be spoiled.

Just the idea of spoiler culture in general is interesting to us, and we wanted to give it a deeper dive than would have been possible otherwise. It came up during our Avengers: Endgame spoilercast, but amazingly, we didn't have enough time to talk about spoilers while we were talking spoilers. So here we are.

Let us know what your thoughts on spoilers are!

For Geekery Beej got Persona Q2, which might be the swan song of the Nintendo 3DS. It might be the last major 3DS release, but it has all the style of P5 on the PS4. He also (finally) started listening to The Adventure Zone and had a ton of questions for Void about the show. He also watched Always be My Maybe and John Wick (both of which are awesome) and got back into FFXIV Stormblood.

Speaking of Stormblood, Void wrapped up all the Stormblood patch content to prep for FFXIV Shadowbringers, and he talks about how well the politics and different storylines are brought together to lead into the new expansion. And in more Final Fantasy news, Void has started up another FF series playthrough, and he bounced off of 1-4 for various reasons. Not that they aren't good, but he thinks FFV is the place he will have the most enjoyment as he begins going back through the series chronologically.

S4E21 - Returning to Final Fantasy XIV (and other MMOs) - "I don’t know why she didn’t dump me"30 May 201900:52:13

In This Episode:

We discuss returning to MMOs, especially through the lens of Final Fantasy XIV in prep for the upcoming expansion Shadowbringers (it launches July 2).

What in particular makes us start back into games like this that we know tend to be major time sucks? For Beej, it's mainly friends. Having a social group to be a part of means a lot to him. And so does being able to find hella cool gear that makes his Red Mage look amazeballs.

For Void, it's content, content, and more content. He dives in and becomes a game designer's worst nightmare. He consumes and devours the content as quickly as possible, then moves on to the next meal. Err, we mean game. He comes back to MMOs like FFXIV when many patches of content are released, and he can power through it all without having to wait on most releases. He basically plays MMOs at the beginnings and ends of expansions -- that's when there's the most content available.

He has a game dev friend who says he's a Content Locust, and that's the most perfect description of how he plays games that we've ever heard. It's dead-on, 100% accurate.

We discuss what it is about FFXIV that keeps us coming back, as well as things that keep us going back to other MMOs like World of Warcraft. Or in Beej's case...not going back to WoW Classic. It's a cycle for both of us, and we decided to dig into what makes it that way. Let us know what the MMO cycle looks like for you!

For geekery this week started a new Dragon Quest podcast called DragonQuest.FM that you can listen to right now. Can you guess what it's about? He beat Dragon Quest IX, watched Dead to Me and Kim’s Convenience on Netflix and got over one heck of a stomach bug.

Void has some lawn mower stories, he puts his dad on blast (heh heh heh), and goes through the prep for the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta that's coming up. If you haven't done it before or heard us talk about it, he gives a great rundown in this episode. And most importantly, he found like 6 anime series that he really and truly enjoys! The main one being Restaurant to Another World.

In This Episode:

Beej traveled to Florida and stayed with Austin for a week. He geeked out a lot while he was there, and we catch up on all the stuff he did while he had a friend to nerd out with.

Dragon Quest Builders is a really fun game, but the bosses are kind of insane. And by insane, we mean super annoying and make the rest of an otherwise fun game a chore that may not be worth playing. Hopefully Dragon Quest Builders 2 will fix that.

The Final Fantasy TCG is super neat. It's probably not a mainstay like MTG has become in our lives, but the art is so pretty, it's definitely worth picking up the deck for your favorite games in the series. It's like a handheld art book, if nothing else. Did we mention that the FF TCG is pretty? Because if not, it's super pretty.

He got to play with a Japanese Nintendo 3DS, and a special edition one at that. The Liquid Metal Slime 2DS is actually metal and shiny, but it's all in Japanese. Austin's came with a copy of Dragon Quest XI for the 3DS, and they used the Google Translate App to translate it to English in real-time. It was funny with some of the things they said, but it was a wonderful adventure. Beej wants to go through the whole game now because it's easily the prettiest 3DS game he's ever seen.

He also got the first sunburn he's had in 15 years after spending the week in the pool every day and in the Keys. He didn't wear sunscreen at all, and he became mildly uncomfortable. The poor thing.

Weekly Geekery

For geekery this week, BJ has been playing more Dragon Quest IX, and he discusses the vocation system (jobs) in-depth and finally figured out why people say it has the best job system of any RPG out there.

He also got a Bittboy and is loving it so far. Having a retro handheld is really nice, especially for fan translations of games that weren't released in English.

Void tried out the new AC Odyssey DLC, but wasn't that impressed. Despite adoring the Atlantis storyline in the main game, the DLC was trudging and he couldn't force himself to play through more of the same. It just felt boring and not worth his time. He will probably watch all of the cutscenes on YouTube. What do you feel about the DLC?

He took his kids to see the Detective Pikachu movie and thinks it was pretty good. It made him totally want a traditional trainer story because the battles that were in Detective Pikachu were so awesome that he wants more. So many more.

And of course, he's still hooked on Magic: The Gathering Arena. He is dabbling in deck construction now, which surprised Beej, and he's even been doing some IRL drafting with physical cards. He even said that he would be willing to go to a card shop and do it in person. Who is this man and what has he done with our Void?

But Wait...There's More!

The guys also tangent onto a couple of other topics, too. They discuss the slow video game year for 2019, but even though it's slow, there are still some killer releases.

They talk about the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake and just what in the world is going on, and they finish the episode up with a few minutes discussing the Game of Thrones series finale. It is literally the last thing in the episode, so if you haven't seen the episode, don't worry -- you won't miss anything else if you stop before we get in

S4E18 - SteamWorld Quest - "Cards are an aesthetic"09 May 201900:53:09
In This Episode:

We cover a quick main topic of SteamWorld Quest and then jump into an extra long Weekly Geekery since we skipped it for our Avengers Endgame spoilercast last week.

In short, the SteamWorld games are pretty fantastic. They take a steampunk look and put the robots and cogs and gears into different settings.

SteamWorld Dig is a western, SteamWorld Heist is in space, and now SteamWorld Quest is medieval fantasy. They all work so incredibly well that you almost forget you're playing with silly robots.

SWQuest itself is a card-based RPG based on deckbuilding, but it does not play like that. The cards themselves are basically just facades for abilities you learn and choose from, and the re-draws are essentially just cooldowns you get every turn.

The game's story is nothing special, but the graphics are beautiful, and the gameplay is far, far, far better than we had expected. If you're looking for a fun, cheap RPG on the Nintendo Switch (and who isn't?), you could do a lot worse than SteamWorld Quest.

And we promise: if you aren't a fan of card-battle games, you can still like this one. Beej does, and he hates card-battles in RPGs.

Weekly Geekery

Beej brings some more JRPG love including Dragon Quest talk and Final Fantasy disparaging. He also finished Skyward, started the Wheel of Time, is researching local races, and is still playing MTGA.

Void finish the Katamari Damacy Boss Fight book, starting looking into meditation apps, is still hooked on MTGA, and actually played Magic: The Gathering in person with physical cards! Even his kids love it!

S4E15 - Magic The Gathering & #MTGArena - “Sad Tacos”18 Apr 201901:05:04

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks!

In This Episode:

We discuss Magic: The Gathering and the new(ish) Magic: The Gathering Arena PC game. We wanted to do this primarily so that we could tackle the subject from the perspective of someone who is pretty new to the game (Void), as well as someone who has a lot of experience with MTG that dates back to the late 90s (Beej).

Void has always been Magic-adjacent, having a brother who played and knowing the very basics of how the game worked. For a number of reasons, he never could quite get into the game. One of the main ones being that it is a physical CCG, and he's not too much of a collector of physical items.

And really, that's MTG's whole shtick. You buy booster packs of random cards, hoping for something awesome. If not, you sell it or trade it so you can get something awesome. But either way, you have physical pieces of cardboard in your possession.

With the release of Magic: The Gathering Arena (think Hearthstone but made by Wizards of the Coast...and, you know, being Magic), Void has really latched onto it. So much so that he might even be buying a card-base for MTGA that costs in the hundreds of dollars so he can get more into it.

That's big.

Beej, on the other hand, has been playing MTG since he was 14 years old. He fell off after a while, mainly 2006-2008ish, but has always done his best to keep up with what was going on and how the game was changing in major ways.

He never was a competitive player, but instead liked to play for fun. Or more accurately, his own fun. He is a Blue player through and through, loving control decks and counterspells. He has only ever won a single tournament on his own, but it was with a Draw/Go deck which is probably the most annoying deck on the planet. Look it up.

That said, he really likes Arena, and he will probably stick with it for a while. It's really the game he wanted out of Hearthstone because as much as he loves HS (or loved, depending on how you look at it), the game never had the nuance of MTG. Now with an online MTG that's worth playing, he's stoked.

You can listen to the whole episode to see what other kinds of awesomeness they talk about.

Weekly Geekery

Beej is all-in on Scalzi's The Interdependency Book 2, and it may be one of his favorite book series ever. It's that good. He's said it before, and he says it again: "It's like Dune, only better and less Dune-y." There's more Trails in the Sky, too, and he can't recommend it enough.

Void mostly geeked out over Magic: The Gathering Arena this week. Most of his gaming time was put into that. He did, however, have time to do a little bit more Elder Scrolls Blades (which he might be done with). He also became a total nerd for the Jedi: Fallen Order trailer and rewatched some Game of Thrones in prep for the kick off of Season 8.

Oh, and they both geeked out pretty hard on the new Star Wars Episode IX trailer.

S4E14 - Video Game Remasters - “Remasters of the Universe”11 Apr 201901:06:54

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks!

In This Episode:

We discuss remasters in all shapes and sizes including the good and the bad.

We wanted to talk about this because Void is working through the remaster of Assassin's Creed 3, and it gave him a lot of thoughts about how the new games have a lot more going for them than he really expected. Going back shows the improvements the series has made.

That said, we discuss whether all remasters are good, bad, or even necessary. The Final Fantasy series has been remastered up and down, left and right, and some are great, and others are not so good.

We also talk about how the remasters of the FF games is because SquareEnix lost the source code to a number of their games over the years. That's why some of the remasters are such a mixed bag, and why some of the graphics are kind of hit and miss. Plus, it's why we have no Final Fantasy VIII remaster or port -- they simply don't have the code.

You can read more about that here: https://www.vg247.com/2018/09/14/isnt-ps4-xbox-switch-port-final-fantasy-8-preservation-may-answer/

Dragon Quest is also a hot topic of remasters, where some of them have content that others don't, but they rarely throw everything people want into one remaster. This series has a ton of them, even being remade for different platforms when a previous one didn't perform that great.

We touch on the Mario 64 remake on DS and just all the stuff that goes along with those kinds of video game remasters. You know, like Metroid 2 and Ocarina of Time and so on.

Best and Worst Remasters?

We also discuss the best and worst remasters out there for us. But if you want to know which games we played as remasters and realized just aren't games for us anymore, you're going to need to listen to the episode.

Weekly Geekery

Beej has been playing Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. It was an impulse buy, despite what he said last week. Wild Arms went on a hiatus because Beej despises random battles, he learned, but he's going back once he cools down. And one of his favorite TV shows, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, had its series finale. And it gave him feels.

Void went to a museum and wants you to go if this really cool Egypt exhibit comes near you. He tried Golf Peaks, and listened to 50 Things that Made the Modern Economy podcast. He can't recommend that one enough because it's a quick and fun podcast that taught him why the Transformers movies came out before GI Joe. You wanna know now, too, right? Well, listen! He also started getting into Elder Scrolls Blades, and he thinks it's pretty. Plus, he's dipping a toe back into Magic: The Gathering Arena; however, he thinks the software itself needs some polishing (no friends' list? Come on, people!)

We discuss impulse buys both good and bad along with how they’ve changed for us over time.

We tend to buy impulsively in different ways. For Beej, it's AAA games, and he tends to regret them. Void, on the other hand, gets a lot of enjoyment out of being in that initial wave of sales and being able to talk, so even when he impulse buys something, he can get his money's worth out of it even if he stops playing it soon.

We both feel as though our houses are impulse buys, which is kind of crazy when you think about it...because they're houses.

We just have a really good discussion about all sorts of awesome stuff and the workings of our brainyparts. And you know that you want to dig in there with us.

S4E12 - Superhero Burnout - “Let creators do their thing”28 Mar 201900:59:16

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks!

In This Episode:

We discuss superhero burnout and how we’re feeling about the upcoming MCU (and non-MCU) movies that are on the horizon.

BJ is in the middle of an MCU rewatch, and is currently not too burned out. At least on movies. TV shows are a different story, and so are the DC movies, to be fair. It's really just Marvel movies that he's currently excited about, and that's because we are getting the culmination of the past 11 years in a few weeks.

Void, on the other hand, wonders if he will see many more of them in the theater versus waiting for home release, but as we dig further, it turns out that his kids are finally hitting the age where they want to go and see them because they are just beginning to see the movies.

We discuss the idea that every Marvel movie at this point is someone's first Marvel movie, and that changes the way we have to look at it. While we have 11 years of backlog and burnout buildup, newcomers are excited that they have that decade of content to immerse themselves in.

We also talk how this may be a Disney thing, too, because we are afraid Star Wars is going to get us on the burnout factor, too. It's kind of already getting there for Beej in terms of the extra content that's not movies.

Weekly Geekery

BJ has been playing old games like Wild Arms and Chrono Cross, making his own game in RPG Maker that's going to be a sequel/followup to his Steampunk novel, and he gave Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon a try.

Void has been catching up on movies (and a lot of them at that!), failing at Baba is You and trying to explain its premise and doing a pretty good job given how absurd and weirdly fun it is, and playing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It's very hard, and he's put in a lot of hours, and he has to stop. But he keeps going back to it and wanting to learn how to be better. That's a pretty ringing endorsement from him.

S4E10 - LitRPG and GameLit Books - “When you get punched by a skeleton you feel it”14 Mar 201901:10:52

In This Episode:

We talk about the LitRPG genre of books in a listener-sponsored episode from Patreon!  Thanks for the idea and the support of the podcast Ken Murray!

If you've never heard of the genre, that's okay! We dig into what makes up the LitRPG genre, and how it's kind of a subgenre of the GameLit category that's popped up over the past few years.

In general, it is a little hard for us to define the genre in specific terms. The best we can really lay out (aside from the books that we talk about in this episode) are Sword Art Online, .hack, and maybe Ready Player One.

After we stopped recording, Beej thought about potentially For the Win by Cory Doctorow, but still...that's a little different. And so is REAMDE by Neal Stephenson. They're at the very least LitRPG-adjacent.

General Thoughts on LitRPG

We both generally like the genre, and the books Ken got to us were chosen specifically for our tastes. Void got Dungeon Born by Dakota Krout, and Beej read Ascend Online by Luke Chmilenko.

Both books are different from the other, with Void's being more geared toward tabletop RPGs, while Beej's is video game-based.

In Dungeon Born, the conceit is the story being told from a dungeon's perspective (I know!), and how it grows and tries to balance itself with risk-vs-reward for the adventurers who come in.

Ascend Online, though, is about a fully immersive VR MMO where folks stay in a sensory deprivation dormitory and essentially live in a game world that's the ideal sandbox for online gaming.

We go through what works for us with these books in the LitRPG genre, and we also talk about what doesn't. The positives far outweigh the negatives, though, and Beej is totally on board for reading the rest of the series, and Void has already dug in and listened to all but the last half-book in his series on audio.

We really have to thank Ken for turning us onto both the series and the books themselves. Listener support is always great, and this time, it broadened our horizons, too. So double score!

Weekly Geekery

Beej has been making his own RPG in RPG Maker MV (which can be played at https://bit.ly/beejrpg), and he saw Captain Marvel twice over opening weekend. It was better the second time, though he did really like it on the first one. No matter what those review bombers say, Carol Danvers is freaking awesome.

Void has some thoughts on Anthem, too. He's mentioned before that his feelings are mixed, but he's still having a hard time finding the fun. They don't let him fly enough, and the game is too on-rails for the way it was advertised. The BioWare component seems completely at war with the core gameplay, and he is having a hard time making himself finish the story. He wants to care, but really doesn't.

Thanks, Geeks!

That's it for this week, geeks. Make sure to tell your friends about us! We'll be back next week with some more juicy, geeky goodness. (That sounds gross, but whatever. You get it.)

Beej is solo this week, and he has a lot to say. He discusses the RGB gaming desk he has been using for weeks and how cool it is, how much he's loved Littlewood thanks to Elinzia's suggestion, and how awesome the audiobook to Life is a Marathon is. Even without Void to keep things organized and on track, Beej thinks he did a pretty good job of it. Well, except for audio quality. He apologizes profusely for any quibbles you come across. He tried.

And that Void's back, baby!

Weekly Geekery

We do, however, talk about some cool stuff in geekery this week. We discuss seeing Renee Elise Goldsberry in concert, the Golden Retriever hero unit in Wargroove, and how Cosmic Star Heroine is Beej's first Platinum trophy on PSN.

Void Apes Out in style, briefly discusses Anthem, and tells Beej about the cool stuff that Apex Legends is doing...and why he'd still probably hate the game. Void isn't sure if he likes it as much as Fortnite, but it does good stuff.

Void is back!  BJ is… not!?

In this episode, Void has finally returned to the land of the living after a much-maligned absence by the Geek to Geek Community.

Unfortunately, Beej's wife had a bad reaction to an allergy test, and he had to do his husbandly duties and pick her up and make sure she didn't die (spoiler: she didn't). She did, however, impress the nurses by being the only patient they've ever had who snored when she passed out. So points for that.

The silver lining here is that you wonderful human beings out there get to listen to Void's soothing vocal tones podcast their way into your ear canals. We know you've missed him (we have, too!), so we wanted to make sure that since he had a podcasting station for the first time in a long time, he sat down in front of a mic and said hello.

So hit play, geeks, and say hello.

S4E7 - Nintendo Direct - "It looks like if The Legend of Zelda invaded the Island of Misfit Toys"21 Feb 201900:29:17

In This Episode:

Beej is solo this week. Not for a lack of trying. Void's life got twist turned upside down, and the schedule for us to get back on schedule was pushed back. Then Beej's internet decided that it didn't want to stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time, making recording an episode with a guest impossible. Stupid thunderstorms making the power blink.

Regardless, we've got an episode in your feed covering the talk of the geeks: last week's Nintendo Direct.

Oodles of Cool Stuff from Nintendo

The Nintendo Direct on February 13th was chock-full of content that shows 2019 as being potentially the best year yet for Nintendo's portable console.

Between Yoshi's Crafted World (whose demo is amazeballs), Fire Emblem Three Houses (which looks to change up the formula the series has stuck with to this point), and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (it's so pretty!)...the Switch has a lot going for it.

Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker is getting some DLC, which is neat. Because it's a Wii U game that was ported to the Switch. The interesting part is that the Wii U version isn't getting the DLC. So folks with that version miss out. It's an odd move for Nintendo, considering with games like Breath of the Wild, the DLC was the same for both platforms.

Mario Maker 2 is coming out. Beej wants a Yoshi's Island palette. That's it and that's all.

And that's not to mention that Nintendo didn't even mention the upcoming Pokemon Generation 8 game that's due at the end of this year.

Oh, and we get Joker from Persona 5 in Super Smash Bros Ultimate for sure. That indicates we may be getting P5 Crimson on Switch sometime since he's not been on a Nintendo platform before -- except that he has. Persona 5 is the primary cast of the new 3DS title Persona Q2, and it's been out in Japan since December and is coming Stateside in June (or July?). So there's a small chance they're using that as an in, but who knows? Regardless, Joker in Smash is gonna be awesome.

Third-Party Shenanigans

SquareEnix brought their game: Final Fantasy VII is on its way, Final Fantasy IX dropped in HD on the eshop the day of the Direct, and Dragon Quest XI S got a spectacular presentation.

SE showed that the much-anticipated 2d version of the game (previously only available on the Japanese 3DS version) is coming to Switch. This mode is reminiscent of the SNES DQ games, and Beej can't wait. He loves old-school RPGs. But you already know that.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is also on the docket, and even though it's a builder game, and Beej doesn't really do those, this one looks really neat and the co-op mode means that he might just like it because he can play with Dragon Quest Austin.

And...AND...there's a new Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon game. Beej has no idea if it's a remake or a new one, but it looks cool and cute. So he's on board.

Basically SE showed up. The problem is that the Square side of SquareEnix has been disappointing lately, so we'll see how things go from here. But the Enix stuff looks fantastic. So at least there's that.

Nindie Delights

Nintendo highlighted a lot of other games, too, that aren't just their spectacular first-party titles.

We saw Deltarune, the follow-up to Undertale. We got a glimpse of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and the badassery that is Captain Marvel and her binary form.

Rune Factory 4 got a special edition, Rune Factory 5 got announced, and the buzz of excitement around both has Beej intrigued enough to give the games a shot. He has no idea if he'll like them, but everyone else does. So he can't wait.

S4E6 - Why Pop Culture? with Katie from Tea Time! - “Don’t be mean, just be happy about it”14 Feb 201901:08:29

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks!

In This Episode:

Katie from the Tea Time podcast joins Beej because Void is still being attacked by life. One day, the man will roll high enough to break free. Maybe next week.

Regardless, Katie and Beej have a rousing good time, and they discuss why and how their love of all things pop culture led them to where they are today.

Katie started with Harry Potter and fell deep into fandom from there. She eventually ended up podcasting and blogging for Temple of Geek, even attending cons under their press pass credentials. It was pretty sweet.

But life happened, and something amazing came from it...

Tea Time with Katie and Chelsea!

Her current podcast, Tea Time with Katie and Chelsea, was born from still loving pop culture, having things to say about it, and having the perfect partner in Chelsea to do so.

Chelsea recently told her, however, that Katie should do a minisode on Supernatural's 300th episode alone. Because she doesn't know anything about it. So much for the perfect partner, right, Katie? Hah! We kid, Chelsea. We love you, too. <3

Media Criticisms and Cult TV

Both Beej and Katie did academic work at the graduate level on pop culture, even presenting at conferences. Katie wrote about masculinity and femininity in the CW's Arrow, proving once again that there is a lot more to the show than rippling muscles and melodrama.

Beej kicked off his pop culture conferencing with a paper about how Willy Wonka is actually a villain.

With academic ties and a deep understanding of how media and culture play together, it was inevitable that Katie and Beej and Void and Chelsea all crossed paths. They run in the same circles because they are the same circles. (Does that make sense? No? Well, just go with it, anyway.)

Their training on looking at pop culture means they can see why things are important and because of that, they have to tell other folks. Which is why we get podcasts episodes like this one. And how we get full podcasts like Tea Time.

Be sure to follow Katie on Twitter at @ladykatherinep and listen to the podcast on your favorite podcatcher app or at teatimewithkc.com.

S4E5 - Kingdom Hearts 3 - “I like him less now because he’s not an owl!”07 Feb 201901:12:27

Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks!

In This Episode:

Void is still missing! Austin joins Beej again to talk about a series that means a lot to both of them: Kingdom Hearts. KH3 has finally released. After thirteen years of waiting, and nearly 18 since the series' debut, we have our grubby little hands on the final installment of the mainline Kingdom Hearts games.

The real question, though, isn't necessarily whether it's good or not. That's almost beyond the point. The real question we have to ask ourselves as fans of the series is...

Was KH3 Worth the Wait?

Even that, however, is a hard question to answer because it hasn't been 13 years since the release of any Kingdom Hearts game. Only the numbered, mainline ones. We've had a slew of releases like Birth by Sleep (which might as well have been renamed Kingdom Hearts Zero), Dream Drop Distance, re:Coded, Chain of Memories, and so on.

We haven't necessarily missed them, but there hasn't been a primary console release since KH2. The others were all handhelds, except for remasters/re-releases.

In general, we think that yes it was worth it. But the better answer is kinda because it can't be talked about without a few caveats.

What You Should Know Before Playing Kingdom Hearts 3

Before diving in, let us give you a few points that we've noticed people talk about so that you're not surprised.

1. Cutscenes

First, the cutscenes are long. Like...Xenoblade Chronicles 2 long. So make sure that you're ready for that.

Second...the cutscenes don't make as much sense as you think they should. If you've played all the games, you'll be frustrated because you know this stuff. And if you've just played KH1 and KH2, then you're going to be frustrated because even the clarification of what happened in the other games is nonsense.

That said, it's easy to bounce off Kingdom Hearts 3 early. Please don't. If you try it and aren't sold, get to the end of the Toy Story world (the first of the real worlds) before deciding to bounce. The game opens up a lot at that point. (Kind of like Persona 5 opening up after the first Palace.)

2. Combat is Chaos...At First

When you start out, the combat feels like fast actiony, Kingdom Hearts combat. It's frenetic and wild. It's also (mostly) controlled chaos.

That's because they have included nearly every combat mechanic from all the other Kingdom Hearts games into this one. All at once. (No cards from Chain of Memories, though, thankfully.)

You get Attractions, Shotlock, Flowmotion, Summons, Grand Magic, Weapon Transformations, Team Attacks, and...probably something we're forgetting, too.

At first, it's easy to get overwhelmed. But as you play, you both grow used to it and see the logic behind it all. Plus, you learn which pieces and mechanics work best for you, so you can ignore the ones that don't.

Just be aware, it's not all button mashing with a few reaction commands. We promise.

3. The Boys Are Back

You get to keep Goofy and Donald in your party at all times now. No more swapping in and out. The Disney characters just add on and follow you around and fight. It's awesome.

4. The Pirates World is Garbage

The Pirates of the Caribbean world is garbage. It’s a garbage world with a garbage story with garbage gameplay mechanics and garbage characters.

It is, however, very pretty. Very, very pretty. The graphics are incredibly well-done. Other than that...garbage.

You have been warned. So power through it, get to the end, and then you can go back and explore later. We promise that it's a lot more enjoyable as an open world rather than a narrative experience.

5. The Minigames and Sidequests are Awesome

In This Episode:

Void is busy with life stuff, so Beej brings in Austin -- who you've probably heard about before. He is going to be blogging on the Geek to Geek site about playing through all of the Dragon Quest games this year, so we thought it would be a great time to bring him on the show to talk about the series.

After discovering a love for DQ with the Dragon Quest Heroes games, DQXI grabbed both Austin and Beej and reeled them in hard. Without any previous mainline game experience, Austin decided to get the PS4 platinum trophy.

By then he was hooked and was jonesing for as much DQ as he could get.

Dragon Quest XI - What's So Good About It

We discuss at great length at why Dragon Quest XI stands out from so many other JRPGs, and why the game itself just works. Right now, it's a very traditional DQ game, but is honestly one of the most accessible RPGs out right now.

There is true turn-based combat, a fantastic character named Sylvando you're going to love, and a lot of the jRPG classic gameplay but looks completely new and beautiful.

Some folks complain about the music. But...it wasn't a problem for either of us. It was DQ music.

Other Dragon Quest Games

Austin is currently playing Dragon Quest VII, which is different from the other games he's played. Right now, the game is very slow (16ish hours in), the characters are kinda obnoxious, but you can tell that it had a lot working against it back in the day when it was released on PS1. The 3DS version is definitely an improvement.

DQ 1-3 on iOS are fantastic. And relatively quick to get through. They're known as the Erdrick Trilogy, and when you look at them versus Final Fantasy 1-3, you can actually tell how much more advanced the DQ games are than FF. It's around FFIV that the FF games really take off on their own and make their own way.

Beej on Dragon Quest

DQVIII was my first one. Saw @13th_story on Twitter post a picture, a single picture, from the 3DS version, and I went out and bought it. It just looked fun, and it was pretty, and I knew I had to play it.

It took me a while to get into it, and I almost quit. I am very glad I didn't. Took me a while to get into it. Almost quit. Glad I didn’t. The game is super traditional but in the best way.

DQ8 is absolutely a predecessor to DQXI, which is why XI is the better place to start now. It's the most improved of all the DQ games, has the most polish, and it doesn't ruin anything when you go back to the older ones.

Beej imported DQIX from Japan to practice the language. The DS version is the only version that exists. It didn't do so great in America. We both hope that XI's success will make them re-release a lot of these like IX with remasters.

What are your favorite Dragon Quest games?

Void and Beej catch up on catching them all with this Pokemon check-in. Eh? Get it? Ehhhh?

Beej's 8-year-old nephew discovered Pokemon for the first time, and when he found out that Beej knew something about it, things were on.

In order to talk with his nephew, Beej got into Pokemon again, too. By re-learning to play the TCG (pokemon.com/tcgo), completing the Pokedex in Let's Go Pikachu, and deciding to get a Living Pokedex in Alpha Sapphire and Ultra Moon.

Since the time of the recording Beej also bought Black, too.

So yes...his addictive personality has indeed made him try to...sigh...catch 'em all.

S3E50 - Smash Bros - “The Smashiest Smash”20 Dec 201800:41:34

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In this episode:

  • Void and Beej have very different opinions of Smash Bros and it all comes out in this episode. Do we Smash each other? Or our expectations?
  • Super Smash Bros Ultimate on Nintendo Switch is the smashiest Smash that ever smashed a smash.
    • It’s a really good version of the game and it’s already my favorite
    • Mostly it’s great because everything (and everyone) is here from older versions
    • Plus the single player is the most built out that it’s ever been with both Classic and World of Light modes.
    • Small tweaks
      • Brought back mid-air dodges
      • You can see the bounds of the level when you’re off the screen
      • Defense is less effective which speeds up the game
      • The game is faster in general than the last two have been (Wii U/3DS & Brawl)
      • If you  missed getting to experience all the DLC for the Wii U version, it’s all in Ultimate on day 1.
      • Mostly it’s an extremely refined and iterated version of the last Smash for the Wii U
  • Our histories with Smash Bros are entirely too long and detailed to talk about in the notes. So you should absolutely go and listen to the episode to hear what's up.
  • And the question that really got the best discussion is: Why does BJ hate Smash Bros but like fighting games AND Why does Void dislike fighting games but like Smash Bros?
    • Again, listen to the episode because this one...well, it's a pretty good time. And it immediately made Beej go into his living room and play Smash on the Wii U. Intrigued at how? Find out by listening to the episode, friendo!

Weekly Geekery

  • No geekery this week. This is one of those subjects that needed an episode dedicated to the main topic. But we are going to have a super-mega, awesomesauce geekery at the beginning of the year. S4E1 is gonna be epic!

S3E49 - Year-End Geekery - “The most delightful sandwich I’ve eaten in years”13 Dec 201800:56:42

Year-End Geekery

In this episode:

  • Void and Beej catch up on things that need to be said before the end of the year. The end of the year is hectic for everyone, and we have a lot of stuff that needs to be talked about before Season 4 of the podcast rolls out.
  • Beej's stuff:
    • BJ ate a really good sandwich… like… really good. Holy moly.
    • The Dragon Prince
      • Frame-rate thing is interesting.
      • Rayla’s Scottish accent seemed so fake, but the actress is Scottish
      • Reminds me of Ni No Kuni 2 because it’s a pseudo-lighthearted fantasy
      • Season 2 was greenlit. Yay!
    • Overwatch
      • New Symmetra. Again, holy moly. So much goodness.
    • Legends of Aria - https://www.legendsofaria.com
      • Formerly Shards Online
      • Early Access right now
      • Pretty much is old-school UO.
      • 30 bucks for the initial buy-in.
      • Steam in January.
      • Fully supports player mods and servers
    • Ralph Breaks the Internet
      • Not quite as good as the first one. But still really fun.
      • The Disney princesses were by far the highlight
    • Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2
      • Just a good show, ya know?
  • Void's stuff:
    • Persona 5 art book! So stylish!
    • Off to be the Wizard
      • Is this LitRPG? I don’t know where that line is drawn exactly.
      • The premise of the book is that someone finds a file that controls all the variables in the world and uses it to essentially become a wizard (with the use of computer skills). It’s essentially a geek power fantasy.
    • The Coming Storm (Audible Original) about Weather Data
      • Government data that’s been collected but never really been uploaded to the cloud
      • Communication and psychology problems of weather warnings and alerts
    • Starlink Battle for Atlas
      • It’s like Starfox, No Man’s Sky, and an Ubisoft open world game had a baby
      • Hand-crafted solar system
      • Fun exploring
      • Combat is surprisingly fun because you get to mix and match weapons on the fly
      • There’s an actual story
      • This is also a pretty good Starfox game (Beej agrees. It's a great Starfox game.)
    • Minecraft story mode on Netflix
      • Choose your own adventure on Netflix. Pretty neat.
    • RDR2 Online
      • Seems like a much better fit for the world they’ve created
      • There’s also still so much riding around between interesting things. Longing for more fast travel options
      • Co-op story missions are fun
      • Some of the competitive playlists are fun
      • I bet this would be great with a regular group of friends if you can schedule that into your life
    • Hitman 2
    • More of the same in a really good way!
    • Plus, if you own season 1 you get all those maps for free in the season 2 engine with the new items and elements
    • New maps! Some are awesome I love the intricate systems. It’s a mix of puzzles, logic, learning, mastery of a level, and execution. It’s everything I loved about Hitman Season 1 but even more.
    • This is probably one of my favorite games of all time (replacing Hitman Season 1) since it has all of season 1 i
