Wawira Njiru is the CEO of Food 4 Education. Food 4 Education is a not-for-profit organisation aiming to make school feeding programs mainstream across Africa by designing a blueprint, operating it, and supporting replication to ensure that no child has to learn on an empty stomach.

In this episode, Wawira discusses how Food 4 Education’s mission to end childhood hunger by providing nutritious school meals began in a makeshift kitchen feeding one classroom, and has grown into a widespread organisation feeding more than half a million children in Kenya, with plans to expand to other countries. Wawira reflects on the evolution of their initiative, strategies, and centralised kitchen model, as well as the importance of sourcing locally available food, community involvement, and the challenges in scaling up.

Meeting the young agri-preneurs changing Africa

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to sit down with three young agri-preneurs who are enacting real change in Africa on World Youth Day during the 2025 CGIAR Science Week.

Priscilla Wakarera is the CEO of Rhea. Rhea is a soil health management company that provides farmers with precise nutritional data and tailored recommendations. Allan C’oredo is the Founder and CEO of FarmIT. FarmIT offers precision farm advisory services and market linkages to smallholder vegetable farmers in Kenya. Josephine Adeti is the Co-founder and CTO of Radava Mercantile. Radava Mercantile provides smallholder farmers with market linkages, warehouses, and farmer-tailored credit facilities to help prevent post-harvest losses.

In this episode, Josephine, Allan, and Priscilla share their passion for supporting smallholder farmers through enhanced tech integration and insights and how their unique projects contribute to reductions in post-harvest loss, increased soil health, and greater connection between smallholder farmers across the continent.

How the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation unites 25 million smallholder farmers

EAFF is a regional farmers’ organisation that represents over 25 million smallholder farmers from 24 member organisations in 10 Eastern African countries to achieve one overall goal: a prosperous and cohesive community of East African farmers.

We need to act NOW to change agriculture for the future

Bram emphasises the importance of agriculture in tackling poverty and food insecurity, outlines how complex issues such as climate change, resource management, and nutrition impact agricultural practices, and reflects on how we will look back on the decisions we make now with the benefit of knowledge and hindsight.
