268 // Does your home feel a bit boring and generic? 5 EASY ways to add personality to your home this weekend
vendredi 30 août 2024 • Duration 23:45
Hey friend!
Does your home feel a bit boring and generic? Are you tired of living in the all white, gray, and beige that was trending for so long on Instagram? Are you ready to add a little personality and character to your home, but you don't exactly know where to start?
In today's episode I'm sharing 5 ways to add a bit of personality and character to your home, that won't have you taking out a second mortgage, knocking out walls or changing every paint color on your walls!
1. Add pattern: swapping out solid colored items (curtains, pillows, area rugs, throw blankets) for something with pattern can instantly add personality where the solid was lacking. Scared of pattern mixing? Try combining one geometric pattern and one fluid pattern (like a floral). Keep a common color between the two and you're set!
2. Add color: this may seem like an easy fix, but it's even easier when you think of adding color in small ways (pillows, artwork, curtains, books, etc). Painting small pieces of furniture (or big ones) can instantly change the look of your room without the commitment of painting your walls.
3. Add whimsical art: swap out big box store art (canvas, triptychs, farmhouse word art) for pieces that are a bit out of the box. When those pieces are directly connected to a passion, a hobby, a family story - you are instantly creating a meaningful touch with your decorating. Examples include: a gallery wall of vintage tennis rackets, a collection of busts, glass jars with baseballs inside. My favorite places to source art that has more personality than art found at box stores are: vintage and antique markets, flea markets, thrift stores, garage sales, Etsy.
4. Use common objects as decor: if you apply the rule 'anything that is out and visible is art' to your decorating, you can begin to see how normal everyday items can be elevated. Take for example a simple bathroom garbage can. Use an urn, a ceramic plant pot - anything other than a plastic garbage bin and you instantly elevate the space.
5. Incorporate vintage & antique items: mixing old & new is one of the most beautiful ways you can decorate a home. It instantly looks like it is oozing with personality, character and charm. Why? Those vintage pieces have lived another life and often come a little worn. How do you mix and match well? Try choosing a ratio to stick to - 1/3 vintage pieces to 2/3 new. This sets the parameters for how much of a good thing you decorate your home with.
BONUS: have fun! Experiment! Play! There are no rules that say you have to decorate your home once and live with it for 50 years. If it feels tired and boring to you now...shake it up a bit by using one or more of these 5 tips.

267 // Feeling stuck decorating your open concept home? 3 tips to keep it cohesive
vendredi 23 août 2024 • Duration 28:26
Hey friend!
Does the idea of a home with an open concept sound nice until it comes time to decorating?
Open concepts sound nice, but how do you create a home that looks curated, nuanced and cohesive when it's all essentially one big room? And how do you do that without just getting matching everything?
In this podcast I'm sharing three ways you can unify your space intentionally without being matchy-matchy.
1. Focus on the foundation: The foundation of your home is the floor and walls. Walls include window treatments. Keeping base colors the same (i.e. in area rugs and curtains), choosing a color palette and using it throughout the open concept and using the same curtain rods, shades, etc. all help create cohesiveness.
2. Repeat MACRO and MICRO design elements: Large design elements like wood tones, metals, colors, textures are easy to repeat. When you master that, take it a step further by focusing on the micro design elements - the more subtle = the more nuanced. The more nuanced = the more elevated.
3. Look for the outliers: Try finding the things that no longer belong and remediate them by removing them or intentionally adding additional items to make the outlier fit in.

258 // "Where did you find THAT?" and other questions you will be answering about the home decor you found at the thrift store
jeudi 13 juin 2024 • Duration 38:42
In today's episode we are wrapping up our series on how to effectively and efficiently shop SUCCESSFULLY at thrift stores. Why do some people always seem to find the good stuff? Because they have a system...go back and listen to Episode 257 so you can learn 7 tips for shopping successfully.
Today I'm sharing 16 things I ALWAYS look for. They are part of my aesthetic and when I know what design elements I gravitate to, that I like decorating my home with, I can pin point them easier (using my 7 tips from last week) and be more successful at curating home decor items on the cheap.
Curating your home decor items at thrift stores is a wonderful way to find items that are more personal and less generic than you'd find at a big box store. KNOWING WHAT TO LOOK FOR is a process, but one worth learning so you can create a carefully curated home.

159 // Want to spend ZERO dollars, but have a whole new look in your home? Learn to shop your home with confidence!
jeudi 6 avril 2023 • Duration 20:51
Has your couch been sitting in the exact same position for years?
Getting a new couch may not be the solution to your 'my room feels stuck' woes (though in some cases it most definitely is). Using what you already have, but in new ways, is the cheapest, most budget friendly way to re-decorate your home. Think about it...you've already vetted everything that is in your home. It's already passed the 'I like it, I want to have it test.' But just because you placed it on a specific shelf or in a tucked away corner doesn't mean it needs to live there until it dies.
In this episode I teach you four ways you can confidently shop your home, using what you've already purchased and love. Start small or go big. Move pillows or move the couch. The choice is up to you. But whatever choice you make, know this: you have permission to play. There are no rules that say your lamp needs to continue living as a living room lamp if you'd like to try it out elsewhere. Move things around. Have fun. Play. And ask yourself, "what's the worst that can happen?" You have to move it back because you hate it. OK. Now you know.
