In this real-time demonstration of a therapy session, we see Poul Perris help a couple connect to the pain underneath their decade’s long relationship struggles.

Poul Perris, MD is the director of the Swedish Institute for CBT & Schema Therapy located in Stockholm,Sweden. The institute is a private training center with University status that offers psychotherapy training programs at various professional levels, combined with a clinical outpatient setting. 

Poul served as the President of the Swedish CBT association from 2010-2016 and has contributed to making SchemaTherapy an integral part of national mental health services in Sweden. Poul has been teaching and supervising cognitivebehavioral therapists and schema therapists internationally for over a decade.He is a certified schema therapy trainer for both individual and couples and his Institute has been offering ISST approved training for certification since 2005. Poul specializes in the treatment of personality disorders, and in couples therapy for complex relational problems. Poul has co-authored a handbook on Schema Therapy in Swedish, as well as several bookchapters on working with couples and core emotional needs. Poul is committed to bring ingSchema Therapy to theattention of the general public and, to this end, has been involved in several productions for Swedish National Television that promote the schema therapists understanding of the centrality of core emotional needs, what happens when theyare not met, and the schema mode model. In 2012 he treated 6 authentic couples with ST-C. All sessions were filmed and later edited into 6 episodes that were aired on Swedish National TV.

Wendy Behary has been treating clients, training professionals and supervising psychotherapists for more than 20 years. She is also on the faculty of the Cognitive Therapy Center and Schema Therapy Institute of New York, where she has trained and worked with Dr. Jeffrey Young since 1989. Wendy is a founding fellow (and supervisor) of The Academy of Cognitive Therapy (Dr. Aaron T. Beck). She was also the President of the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST) from 2010-2014.

Wendy Behary has co-authored several chapters and articles on Schema Therapy and Cognitive Therapy. She is the author of “Disarming the Narcissist…Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed” (New Harbinger Publications). Now translatedin 15 languages. Wendy has a specialty in treating narcissists and the people who live with and deal with them. As an author and an expert on the subject of narcissism, she is a contributing chapter author of several chapters on Schema Therapy for narcissism (Wiley and APA Press). She lectures both nationally and internationally to professional and general audiences on the subject of Schema Therapy, and the subject of narcissism, relationships, and dealing with difficult people.

Jeff Conway is a founding member of The International Society for Schema Therapy and the past President of the International Society of Schema Therapy. He is a Certified Advanced Level Trainer-Supervisor in Schema Therapy (since 2008). Jeff has a private practice in Mid-Town Manhattan where he works with Individuals, Couples, and Groups. Jeff has trained in Emotion Focused Therapy, and is a founder of The NY Center for Emotion-Focused Therapy.  He is also a Certified Group Therapist and his most recent work involves an in-depth exploration of co-dependency and the Enmeshment Schema.

Using chairs in Schema Couples Therapy with Dr Eckhart Roediger

One of the strangest and most powerful elements in SchemaCouples Therapy is chairwork. Putting parts of self in chairs and standing above those chairs provides an opportunity for empathy, seeing the self differently and allowing for change. But how does it work? Eckhart walks through the neuroscience as well as demonstrating how to work with a couple using chairs.

 

Dr Eckhart Roediger is a specialist in Neurology, Psychiatry andPsychotherapy and Psychotherapeutic Medicine. Since 2007 he has been working in private practice in Frankfurt and as a lecturer and supervisor for behavior therapy and schema therapy. He also holds teaching positions in Cologne and the Kath. Stiftungsfachhochschule in Munich. Since June 2008 he isthe first fully licensed Schema Therapist in Germany and member of the founding board of ISST, founded and director of the Institute for Schema Therapy-Frankfurt (IST-F). Eckhart has served as a member of the ISST Board since 2008, past-President and now honorary member.

Professor Dave Edwards talks to us about how to establish shared goals with a couple and create a good therapy alliance at the outset of sessions. He also gives a practical demonstration of how to help couples align together on the kind of connection they want from Schema Couples Therapy.

David Edwards is a Professor Emeritus at Rhodes University, South Africa where he was involved in the professional training of clinical and counselling psychologists from 1980 to 2009. He was fortunate to be connected to the beginnings of schema therapy when he attended seminars with Jeffrey Young while training in cognitive therapy at the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. His enthusiasm was refreshed when, at a conference in Barcelona in 2007, he met Arnoud Arntz, one of the leaders in the Dutch group and attended a workshop presented by him the following year. He joined the newly formed International Society for Schema Therapy (ISST) and is certified as a schema therapist and trainer in individual ST and in ST for couples. He was President of the International Society for Schema Therapy for two terms from 2016-2020. Now retired and working part time for the University, he conducts and publishes research on aspects of psychotherapy and supervises research students.
