“Yoni” didn’t question for one second that he had to serve in the Israeli military when he was 17 years old. And even once he was there, and suffering immensely, he couldn’t imagine the option of finding a way out. Today, he makes political graffiti art that aims to make 17 year old Israelis ask the question that he didn’t dare ask himself at the time: “Why did I enlist?”. This graffiti has become somewhat of an icon in the physical landscape of Israel, but no one really knows who’s behind it. This is his debut interview.

What does “Liberal Zionist” mean? And what is it about this concept that made Rotem question, and eventually dismisses it completely? After training in the elite units of the Israeli military, he began researching the Nakba and everything we weren’t taught about it in history class. Then, through intense solo Arabic studying, he was able to really listen to Palestinians and their stories. Today, he is an activist who stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and believes that the only way to achieve peace, is first to achieve justice.

Rita, now in her 30s, immigrated from Ukraine With her family as an infant. While struggling to assimilate as a teenager living in the city of Beer Sheva, she was introduced to some different ideas about the world than the ones she was used to hearing. This led her to decide not to serve in the military even though the law required it. At 17, without knowing anyone else who had done this at the time, she was scared but determined. We met in an activism chapter in our college, and have been good friends ever since.

Today she works with youth at risk and does her best to model for them how to stick to their own truth no matter what.

Before we start, it’s important to note that we recorded this episode almost a year ago, before the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, so take that into account while listening.

Odeliya grew up in the Jewish neighborhood of Armon Ha’Natziv, which is according to international law an illegal settlement. Her father, a firm believer in Zionism, taught her how to use the art of debate - which is why she’s now such a good advocate for the rights of the Naqab (Negev) Bedouins, and the Palestinian struggle at large.

Odeliya is one of my biggest inspirations; she is currently getting her bachelor's degree in media studies, worked up until recently in the Negev (Naqab) forum for civil equality, and teaches groups of teenagers about the political context we live in and how to understand systemic violence. I know every demonstration she joins will be filled with joy no matter what since she has her own special way of doing everything in life with a smile. She is a free spirit working relentlessly so that everyone else can be free as well. And with that, I hope you enjoy this episode.

Raised by a father who was heavily involved in the Israeli forces, Sharon was very motivated to serve in the military. But during his service in the West Bank, he realized something was very wrong. Today he doesn’t want to ever hold a gun again, but the process he went through took years. Listen to his story of becoming disillusioned.

Sharon is an activist and a long-time friend of mine. And though he shares his name with a former leader of the Israeli government who has caused the Palestinian people a lot of pain, I ask that you try and give him a chance. He’s a talented artist and photographer who uses his medium to create change in his society’s perceptions.
