Venice Biennale: How Will We Live Together [Part 2]
Season 2 · Episode 13
jeudi 1 juillet 2021 • Duration 02:11:54
The postponed 17th Venice Architecture Biennale asked its 112 participants to consider the question, “How will we live together?”. A question originally posed in 2019 by curator and architect, Hashim Sarkis far before our collective 2020 experience. He originally asked participants “to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together” Answers from 46 countries materialized into the exhibition of 2021. After a year spent living apart, the theme is both hauntingly fitting and reifies our disconnection.
The second installment of our special two-part Design and the City episode covers the long-awaited event. An event that signaled something, a community eager to reconnect and a deeper understanding of just how interwoven we are with our spaces spanning the full spectrum of human existence. The exhibition explores that spectrum across five scales: Among Diverse Beings, As New Households, As Emerging Communities, Across Borders, and, As One Planet.
For this episode we have it broken down into three parts. The first features none other than the 17th Biennale curator himself, Hashim Sarkis. Hashim is the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the founder of Hashim Sarkis Studios. Joining him in conversation is NewCities’ Director of Applied Research and reSITE’s own visiting curator, Greg Lindsay, to discuss the meaning and aims of this special Biennale.
Following Sarkis and Lindsay’s conversation, we will explore accessibility and hear from the curators of the British Pavilion entitled The Garden of Privatised Delights and wrap up with the curators of the Austrian Pavilion entitled, We Like Platform Austria. Both sets of curators tackled what can often be a rather serious topic regarding accessibility along with the binary that exists between public and private space, but with a bit of whit and a sense of playfulness, ultimately makes the message on accessibility, accessible in itself.

The exhibition explores that spectrum across five scales: Among Diverse Beings, As New Households, As Emerging Communities, Across Borders, and, As One Planet.
In this episode we’ll hear from the U.S. pavilion curators, Paul Anderson and Paul Preissner; exhibitors Lukas Feireiss and Leopold Banchini; curator from Luxembourg, Sara Noel Costa De Araujo; and finally exhibitors for the Nordic Pavilion, Siv Helene Stangeland, and Reinhard Kropf–all whose work shares a common thread: wood.
These wood-based installations make cases for their egalitarian and democratic nature. They offer a particular simplicity, humility, flexibility, and familiarity coupled with considerate retrospectives, to not only answer the pressing question, “How will we live together?” but “how will we thrive together?”

Julia Gamolina on Breaking the Architect's Mold
Season 2 · Episode 3
mardi 24 novembre 2020 • Duration 59:30
Julia is many things. Woman. Immigrant. Architect. Writer. Cornell Graduate. Director of Strategy at Trahan Architects. Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Madame Architect. The latter is her brainchild and arguably her most well-known work; an online magazine about, by, and for the women that shape the built environment. What is so special about the work she is doing with Madame Architect? Her commitment is to profile women in all stages of their careers, who break the mold of what an architect is, and create space for more diversity in the field.
She breaks that mold, too. She’s applied her knack for writing and expertise in architecture along with her inquisitive nature and ability to connect with people to build a platform that has now interviewed over 150 architects and designers, as well as CEOs, publicists, journalists, business strategists, and more. She is also the Director of Strategy of the up-and-coming Trahan Architects.
A rising tide that raises all ships—Julia’s efforts in building a culture of community and collaboration give these diverse stories, perspectives, and the women they belong to a seat at the table.

Vishaan Chakrabarti on Creating an Architecture of Belonging
Season 2 · Episode 2
mardi 17 novembre 2020 • Duration 57:22
Vishaan Chakrabarti, the founder and creative director of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) as well as the Dean of the William W. Wurster College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley discusses the future of mobility, designing streets as public spaces and creating an architecture of belonging with reSITE founder, Martin Barry. Vishaan has made some thoughtful arguments against banal, processed urban design being detrimental to our ability to thrive as human beings, drawing on imagery from the globe's most iconic cities, contrasting them with the cold anonymity of many modern ones, and applies this to what he see's as an inevitable evolution—the elimination of private cars.

Winy Maas on Dipping the Planet in Green
Season 2 · Episode 1
mardi 10 novembre 2020 • Duration 01:10:42
Winy Maas is constantly looking towards the future and asking the question - what’s next? The co-founder of MVRDV has ideas that are seemingly larger than life, and push the boundaries of our urban potential. His firm is known for projects like Rotterdam's Markthal, Stairs to Kriterion, or the Taipei Twin Towers. reSITE founder Martin Barry spoke with Winy about his recent projects, including the retrofitted abandoned shopping mall close to the Taiwanese city of Tainan that is part of a wider masterplan to rejuvenate the area that includes a circular food market, with a multipurpose roof, used for growing the produce that will be sold below along with the newly opened Tainan Spring. Also discussed are the projects his think-tank, ‘The Why Factory,’ is involved in, the imaginative Green Dip that rethinks what a “green city” can look like, and the Manifesta 13 Biennale that took place this year in Marseille. He is energetic as he is inspiring. Martin was lucky enough to speak with Winy to discuss that question - what’s next.

Ravi Naidoo on Giving Design a Higher Purpose
Season 1 · Episode 8
mardi 24 mars 2020 • Duration 35:35
Exuberant. Optimistic. Romantic. Three words Ravi Naidoo, the advocate who put African design on the map, used to describe himself. Ravi's story is one of reinvention. Just as South Africa was entering a period of newly found democracy, Ravi found an impetus to change his career. Over 20 years later, he is the driving force behind Design Indaba, arguably the most influential design event in the world. The event takes place in Cape Town every year, and it's only the tip of the iceberg. They consider themselves a do-tank, rather than a think-tank, pushing the boundaries of design with the simple question—what is design for?
