We had the pleasure of sitting down with Nora Kirkpatrick the writer and director of this month's COUPLES WEEKEND to talk about her fascinating journey from rockstar and actor to filmmaker. Nora grew up in rural Iowa before graduating from UCLA’s School of Theatre, Film and Television. Upon graduation, Nora joined Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, won a GRAMMY and toured the world, playing Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and SXSW, among others. Nora honed her writing skills while on tour, and upon leaving the group, hit the ground running, selling shows to CBS, Hulu, Paramount and Comedy Central, among others.  She was recently a writer on Amazon's Emmy and Golden Globe nominated hit series, DAISY JONES AND THE SIX, a writer/co-producer on the  Amazon series, THE RUNAROUNDS, from the creators of OUTER BANKS. And prior to that Nora created, wrote and directed a 15- episode interactive television show for EKO and FunnyOrDie called THE COOP, co-starred Tony Hale, Bobby Moynihan, Bridget Everett and Margaret Cho. She created, wrote and directed DOOR NO. 1, a first of its kind live-action VR comedy series, starring Snoop Dogg and Ravi Patel, for Hulu, directed on THE GOLDBERGS and was the first woman ever to direct a campaign for Bud Light. She also recently wrapped production on her second feature, WHODUNNIT a rom-com starring Lana Condor and Jack Whitehall and will be released in late 2026, and is currently a writer/producer on Amazon's upcoming series ESCORTED starring Brett Goldstein.  Learn more about your ad choices. Giselle Bonilla received her MFA in Directing from the American Film Institute Conservatory. Her thesis film, THE BULLFIGHTER, won the Student Director's Guild of America Grand Prize Award, and received Special Mention for Best Comedy at Palm Springs' Shortsfest. Giselle is a Latino Film Institute x Netflix Inclusion Fellow, Telluride FilmLAB Fellow, and an alum of the Sundance Institute as an Ignite x Adobe Fellow. Her feature directorial debut, THE MUSICAL, premiered in U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and is based on a short of the same title she and her crew made while at AFI. The feature was executive produced by her mentors: director, Jonathan Levine, and producer, Gillian Bohrer. GG Hawkins (writer/director) & Madison Lanesey (actor) share how they collaborated on the film, their partnership, and offer advice for microbudget filmmaking. Carlye chats with Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw, an accomplished writer and director and an advocate for women and nonbinary filmmakers. A firm believer in apprenticeship, Ally shares how she aims to create more opportunities for aspiring directors. Ally Pakiw made her TV debut with Netflix’s Feel Good, created by comic Mae Martin. She directed and executive produced the show’s first season, which was critically acclaimed as one of the best series of 2020 and boasts a "100% Fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. Since then, Ally has written on 2 seasons of Dan Levy’s Schitt’s Creek, directed on Hulu’s Shrill, The Great, & helmed the much lauded “Joan Is Awful” and “Common People” episodes of Netflix’s Black Mirror. In 2024, Ally wrote, directed, and served as EP on her first film, Utopia’s I Used To Be Funny, starring Rachel Sennott. She shares her creative process, how she works with directors, intimacy coordinators and how she aims to create interesting characters as well as how season three will continue to explore toxic relationships in new ways. Meaghan then wrote on AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead,” before going on to sell her original pilot “Broken” to ABC which was made with Anna Paquin and Blair Underwood and produced by Bruna Papandrea and Reese Witherspoon. In 2018 Meaghan created and show ran her 1/2 hour dark comedy “Queen America” for Facebook Watch, starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Judith Light. You're in for a treat. In today's episode we chat with Hanna Flint, a London-based film critic, podcaster, author of Strong Female Character: What Movies Teach Us, and a co-founder of Cinema For Gaza and the LFF Critics’ Support Fund. Hanna's book struck a cord with Carlye and Vika and talking with her about cinema was a real treat. Hanna has been covering film and culture for nearly a decade, and interviewing some of the biggest stars in the world, from actors Rebecca Ferguson, John Boyega, Ruth Negga and Emma Corrin to directors M. Night Shyamalan, Paul Thomas Anderson and Spike Lee. In 2020, Hanna was invited into the London Critics' Circle for Film and has served on the juries for the BFI Future Film Festival, London East Asian Film Festival, Cheltenham International Film Festival and the BIFA awards where she is also a member of the BIFA nomination committee.
