6 Easy to Remember Tips for When Motherhood Sucks with Roxanne Francis

Episode 45

dimanche 5 mai 2024Duration 31:40

Send us a text

Motherhood—the word alone conjures up images of warmth and nurturing, but those of us in the thick of it know there's a whole other side to that coin.

Join me and my guest, Roxanne Francis, as we pull back the curtain on the realities of parenting, far from the sanitized, smiley-faced version we're often sold.

Our heart-to-heart explores everything from the overwhelming moments of caring for a newborn to the isolation that can lurk in early parenthood, all while celebrating the bittersweetness of raising kids.

Just because we’re therapists, it doesn't mean that we have it all together as mothers.

Sometimes things can fall apart, and it's okay to take a moment to yourself and cry. You don't have to be perfect, and it's okay to not have all the answers. Sometimes just showing up is enough.

"I'm grateful for the support that helped me get through those tough times. That's why I believe it's important to cultivate meaningful relationships because we can't navigate this life alone." Roxanne Francis

So, how do you make motherhood suck less, without adding more things to your already full plate? Tune in for a conversation that promises to be a beacon of light for any parent in search of solace, solidarity, and a dash of sanity.

Cranky Mom Syndrome: When you’re trying to be in the know about all the things and unknowns are hard.

Using expressive arts therapy, we can rekindle our sense of curiosity, wonder, and play, and learn to navigate the stressors of parenting.

Art-making is a unique form of truth-telling that can help moms deal with all the unknowns in parenting.

When you're caught up in Cranky Mom Syndrome, it's important to notice the crankiness that comes with the unknowns.

  • Acknowledge the unknown and that you might be cranky about it.
  • Say to yourself, "Yup, there is going to be something you didn't expect, you might be cranky for a few days and that's ok."
  • Accept that unknowns are part of life and survive the unexpected thing (most likely).

If you're feeling stuck, try expressive art therapy. It's a powerful way to tap into your inner creativity and discover hidden parts of yourself. Through art, you can learn to express emotions, thoughts, and feelings that are difficult to put into words.

So, tune in to this podcast episode and learn how to use creativity and play to navigate the unknowns of motherhood.

9 Ways Expressive Art Therapy is Magic and Makes Mom-Life More Bearable

Episode 42

dimanche 14 avril 2024Duration 30:07

Send us a text

In today’s episode, Catherine Mellinger and Kayla Huszar share insights on curiosity, connection and creativity and the magic that expressive art gives you as a mother.

"Even when I feel like I've messed up due to my own dysregulation, or when I'm bombarded with 'perfect' scripts in books or Instagram, I know that as a mother, I can always turn to my art journal to find reassurance. It's where I always find a glimmer of hope." - Kayla Huszar

As trained Expressive Art Therapy Therapists, we have discovered the most significant advice for parents: be curious and lean into the glimmer.

We chat about why expressive art is so important for moms (who are often overlooked by society) and how women can cultivate a sense of curiosity to recognize their true worth.

By the way, Catherine is really curious about your shoes, the adorable onesie your baby is wearing, and what kind of support you're looking for from therapy.

Here are 9 ways expressive art therapy is magic for mom-life, tune in to hear more about it!

  1. Expressive art therapy is a rad way for moms to express themselves without having to overthink it.
  2. Sometimes, you just need to let your art do the talking.
  3. It's a cool way to find a solution without someone else telling you what to do.
  4. It helps you build trust in yourself- even when you're feeling stuck or doubtful.
  5. Best of all, you can be as bitchy or sad as you want without anyone telling you to cheer up.
  6. Art therapy can also help you find hope in dark times.
  7. It's like a mental reset button that can help you get unstuck from negative thoughts.
  8. By making art, you can start to see things in a new light- even the stuff that makes you squirm.
  9. And, you get to be seen and heard by your therapist and by yourself, which can help you realize that you're actually a pretty awesome human.

We mentioned Olivia's Book Impossible Parenting.

Send us a text

When the joy of welcoming a new life is overshadowed by the silent battles of postpartum depression, the stories that emerge can be as heart-wrenching as they are crucial to share.

We previously left you on a cliffhanger. Now, here is part two of Patricia Tomasi's story. She shared her harrowing experience with postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and the chilling touch of psychosis, shedding light on the struggles that many new mothers face in silence.

Her candid recount speaks to the soul:

  • Highlighting the often dismissive responses from healthcare professionals
  • The arduous journey towards finding the right treatment
  • It emphasizes why immediate and accurate care is not just necessary but life-saving.

We honour initiatives like Flora's Walk, which celebrates these stories while raising funds to enhance perinatal mental health programs and services.

Tune in for an inspiring conversation that is both a call to action and a profound reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and shared perinatal experiences.

The Slip: Patricia's Battle with Postpartum Psychosis (Part 1)

Episode 40

dimanche 24 mars 2024Duration 22:26

Send us a text

Patricia Tomasi's voice resonates with a vulnerability that could only come from someone who has stared down the darkest corridors of postpartum mental health.

Her harrowing encounter with postpartum psychosis isn't just a personal battle—it's become a call for change in the way we support new mothers living with mental health. The April 2024 edition of @torontolife magazine features her personal story & how Flora’s Walk is uniting advocates across Canada, raising much needed awareness for perinatal mental health.

As she shares her story, from misdiagnosed perinatal mental health to the power of advocacy, it's a continuous fight to fill the critical gaps in the Canadian healthcare system, particularly when it comes to perinatal mental health.

Through the gripping narratives and heartfelt conversations in our episode, we underscore the urgency of recognizing and acting on the warning signs and the importance of prevention for expecting and new mothers.

"Symptoms of postpartum psychosis can include disorganized thinking, confusion, paranoia, delusions and hallucinations. While there’s still no clear idea of what causes it, researchers have found a link between the change in hormones during pregnancy and childbirth to be a factor, as well as weaning from breastfeeding and the resumption of monthly periods. Women with birth trauma and a history of mental illness (especially bipolar disorder) are also at a higher risk. Although rare at a rate of 1 to 2 people in 1,000, postpartum psychosis is considered a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment." - maternal_mental_health_matters

By sharing these stories, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding perinatal mental health and offer solidarity and hope to those who may be navigating these turbulent waters themselves.

Expressive Art Therapy for Motherhood: One Mom's Story

Episode 38

dimanche 25 février 2024Duration 12:52

Send us a text

Do you feel like you are drowning in motherhood and unsure how to get to shore?  Are you tired of feeling stuck? Want to know a simple way to boost your mood? Are you buckling under the constant pressure of gentle parenting, meal planning, or other significant life events?

Lately, I've been asked for my perspective on why I do expressive art therapy for moms as a social worker and therapist. In this episode, I share one mom's transformation with expressive art therapy and how she started the journey toward the shore.

PSA: While a single session inspired this story, it has been changed and adapted to be non-identifiable and moulded to represent the stories I hear from mothers in my therapy sessions.

I'm honoured to share my admiration for the rebels who dare to traverse the less-trodden path of self-discovery through art.

Ah Ha Moments:

  • How you rebel against the silence that often keeps mothers from understanding their true selves.
  • Understand the significance of the unconventional method of expressive art therapy for mothers.
  • Witness the metamorphosis when someone bravely steps into the atypical spaces where art meets the heart.
  • The impact of being seen and supported on one's journey to healing.
