In this episode of the Brain and Life podcast, co-host Dr. Katy Peters interviews Beth Pinsker, an award-winning journalist and certified financial planner, about her brand new book 'My Mother's Money: A Guide to Financial Caregiving.' They discuss the challenges of handling end-of-life financial decisions, the importance of having key documents like power of attorney, and the emotional and practical aspects of financial caregiving. Dr. Peters is then joined by Dr. Winston Chiong, the Mary Oakley Foundation Professor of Neuroethics in the UCSF Department of Neurology at the Weill Institute for Neuroscience. Dr. Chiong explains what happens in terms of the decision-making capacity of the brain for people with memory concerns, how financial decision making capability is assessed, and how we can support both people with these conditions and caregivers.

In this episode, Dr. Daniel Correa sits down with Abbey Romeo and her mother Christine, both of whom appeared on the Netflix show Love on the Spectrum U.S. Abbey shares her experience of growing up with autism and how she has learned to overcome challenges that have accompanied her diagnosis. Christine shares her perspective of being Abbey's mother and supporting her daughter as she navigates life with autism. Next, Dr. Correa speaks with Dr. Wilfreda Lindsey, a neurologist at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and an assistant professor in Neurology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Lindsey explains the meaning of autism spectrum disorders, available therapies, and how families can support their loved ones living with autism through childhood and the transition to adulthood.

Dr. Bove discusses the association between MS and other autoimmune conditions and offers suggestions on how to navigate explaining the condition to children.

Tiffany shares how she has navigated her epilepsy diagnosis and how she dedicates her time to increasing awareness about the condition across social media platforms. Next Dr. Correa sits down with Dr. David Spencer, a neurologist and professor of neurology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR, and director of the OHSU Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and OHSU Epilepsy Fellowship program. Dr. Spencer explains the tests that need to be done for someone who has their first seizure, the different types of seizures, and provides important safety tips if you are with someone experiencing a seizure.

El Dr. Daniel José Correa conversa con el Dr. Hugo Javier Aparicio, médico e investigador experto en accidentes cerebrovasculares de la Escuela de Medicina de Boston University en Boston Massachussets, sobre la prevención de los ataques cerebrovasculares y sobre sus síntomas y la importancia de evaluarlos con rapidez. El Dr. Aparicio explica el nuevo acrónimo "RÁPIDO" y su utilidad para recordar y comprender los síntomas clave del derrame cerebral. 

Utilice las siglas "R.Á.P.I.D.O." para identificar un ataque o derrame cerebral: 

R = Rostro caído: ¿Presenta entumecimiento o parálisis en alguno de los lados del rostro? Pida a la persona que sonría. ¿Su sonrisa es simétrica o parece caída?  

Á = Alteración del equilibrio: ¿La persona tiene alguna dificultad para caminar o pierde el equilibrio? 


P = Pérdida de fuerza en un brazo o pierna: ¿Siente debilidad o adormecimiento en alguno de sus brazos? Pida a la persona que suba los brazos. ¿Tiene dificultad para subirlos o mantenerlos arriba? 

I = Impedimento visual repentino: ¿La persona tiene algún problema repentino para ver en alguno de sus ojos o en ambos? 

D = Dificultad para hablar: ¿Arrastra las palabras? 

O = Obtén ayuda: un derrame cerebral es una emergencia y cada minuto cuenta. Llama al 911 inmediatamente y anota la hora en que los síntomas aparecieron por primera vez.
