Under the Influencer (with Lee From America)

Season 2 · Episode 36

dimanche 10 août 2025Duration 01:56:01

This week, Kate's interviewing Lee Tilghman, also known as @LeeFromAmerica, who was one of the very first major wellness influencers on social media. To her nearly 400k followers, she shared daily updates on everything from skincare and sleep hacks to smoothie bowls, travel tips, and workout routines, and her sponsorships netted an income of over $300k a year. On the grid, her life seemed perfect. But behind her carefully curated posts, Tilghman was in crisis, suffocating from the unrelenting demand of keeping up her online facade. She found herself viewing everything she did as potential content for Instagram, her relationships suffered, and her job's focus on food led her to develop an unhealthy obsession with eating "perfectly." After a stay in a mental health facility to address her disordered eating and psychological decline, Tilghman quit influencing as her primary career and set out to discover who she really was by leaving it all behind. Or did she?

In this episode, Kate and Lee discuss her memoir (out Tuesday Aug 12) "If You Don't Like This, I Will Die," with topics including the pressures of influencer culture, the evolution of wellness trends, and the complexities of social media addiction. They explore Lee's journey through extreme wellness practices, her current POV on her treatment for orthorexia, and her departure from the influencer world. Ultimately, while Lee shares a compelling personal story, the conversation reveals notable inconsistencies between her current perspectives and her memoir's narrative, so Kate also contemplates how curated online personas continue to shape real-life accountability in her outtro and will continue the conversation over at patreon.com/bethereinfive.

Swipe Up For More (feat. Steph McNeal)

Season 1 · Episode 264

dimanche 18 juin 2023Duration 01:53:37

This week, Stephanie McNeal (former culture reporter for BuzzFeed, currently a senior editor at Glamour Magazine, and the recent nemesis of Tom Sandoval's nail beds) returns to the podcast to discuss her new book about the lives of influencers called Swipe Up For More. First, Kate reminisces about their first convo in 2020, does a brief snorkel about Caroline Calloway's upcoming $65 book made from Italian paper (?), and then Kate and Stephanie dive into topics from her book, e.g. what it was like to shadow Shannon Bird IRL, her pilgrimage to the Utah suburbs, how/why she chose which influencers to feature, virality versus consistency in audience building, the difference between bloggers, influencers and content creators, which platforms prioritize the success of their creators, and other insights behind the curtain and into the 'secretive real world of influencers,' per her subtitle. Enjoy!

Duggaring Deeper

Season 1 · Episode 263

dimanche 11 juin 2023Duration 01:51:26

This week, Kate finally digs into the Duggar world after finding the Prime Video documentary Shiny Happy People particularly riveting/alarming, and explores topics adjacent to the crimes, controversy, and cultural relevance of the family, along with the connections of the IBLP to homeschooling and extensive political pipelines designed to infiltrate positions of power with individuals groomed with fundamentalist beliefs. Kate discusses her taste in reality tv, her history with TLC programming, researches a little more about wisdom booklet teachings, briefly spirals about the "He Gets Us" Super Bowl campaign/Hobby Lobby CEO, and shares some of her own POV regarding the glorifying of religious authority and how it mimics abusive dynamics.

TWs: SA, CSAM, religious trauma, among other horrifying topics. Please only listen if you've watched the doc and are familiar with the subject matter.

Under the Tuscaloosa Sun (Bama Rush Doc)

Season 1 · Episode 261

vendredi 26 mai 2023Duration 01:29:15

This week, Kate reviews the Bama Rush doc on (HBO) Max and discusses why she thinks the doc fell short of our expectations as viewers and voyeurs of this Tiktok phenomenon. First, she reviews her initial reaction, the director's role in it, why she realized it would be impossible for cameras to get on the inside, and reviews some of the core themes that were touched on but not explored. She also speculates about the important things, like sticker gate with Holiday. Then, Kate is joined by another Kate (from Reality Life with Kate Casey), and they pick up where the convo left off on her podcast (link below) and discuss more sorority lore, questions the doc left unanswered, and even do a role-playing exercise where one Kate asks the other if certain behaviors would get PNMs the boot from recruitment. She also provides a detailed list of what's on this week's must-watch list. Enjoy!
