In the previous episode, I asked asked James questions regarding the role of slavery in the American Revolution and in this episode, we focus more on the question of genocide and the racism of the American Founding Fathers. The Dialectic of The Enlightenment (Ft. Mike Watson)

Episode 46

vendredi 22 mars 2024Duration 01:13:29

Part 2 (The Backroom), on The Possibility of Overcoming Myth is available exclusively on Patreon for 1Dime Patrons: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime

This week's episode is all about the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory and the classic book "Dialectic of Enlightenment" By Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer. For this installment of 1Dime Radio, I am joined by Mike Watson, a professor, writer, and co-founder of Revol Press.

We discuss the significance of 'Dialectic of the Enlightenment' and break down its key themes, not just focusing on the famous "Culture Industry" essay but also the other crucial parts of myth, The Odyssey, the concept of Enlightenment, Science, Reason, Technology, and the domination of nature.

Our conversation delves into the pervasive influence of Enlightenment thinking on modern society, critiquing its tendency towards rationalization and its paradoxical return to myth. We explore Adorno's concepts of identity thinking, mythical thinking, and "negative dialectics."

This week's instalment of the 1Dime Radio podcast is all about the work and life of Political Theorist Sheldon Wolin, author of books such as "Politics and Vision," and "Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism," his most famous book - heavily popularized by Chris Hedges.

For this episode, I am joined by Terry Maley, a professor of Political Theory at York University who specializes in the work of Sheldon Wolin, Herbert Marcuse, Max Weber, critical theory and in research concerning democracy, neoliberalism, and social movements.

This two-part episode (the second half being exclusive for Patrons only, as usual) serves as a guide to Sheldon Wolin's key ideas and how he arrived at them over his intellectual career as a renegade theorist. This includes Wolin's concepts such as "Fugitive Democracy," "Inverted Totalitarianism," "Managed Democracy," "The Political," the "Technologization of politics," and more.

A very encompassing podcast to compliment the perspectives presented in the latest 1Dime videos concerning US Democracy such as:
