Spotify for Podcasters
I’m Bob Peck and this is Karmic Relief. My background is in documentary film and comparative religion. I wrote a book called “Original Sin Is A Lie: How Spirituality Defies Dogma and Reveals Our True Self” which serves as an intro to mystic philosophy, Bible scholarship, Hindu metaphysics, and more. Karmic Relief is a lighthearted interview show where I talk to spiritual teachers, creatives, scholars, and activists, and humans who embody the overlapping beauty of all of the above dimensions. According to the mystics, the truth cannot be spoken, but we’ll do our best to talk about it anyway.

Weaving Through The Ten Thousand Things | Dylan Townsend

Saison 2 · Épisode 12

vendredi 22 novembre 2024Durée 01:30:35

Dylan Townsend is calling it out. The world of spiritual satire seems to be growing everyday. My feeds are fed by jokes about the world of spirituality and new age, and look, I'm all for a good laugh. But if you're gonna come for spiritualgram you better have come out of the jungle baby. You better be able to connect Padmasambhava's teachings to Carl Jung's psychoanalysis. You better read the stars like a fortune cookie. And Dylan Townsend is just that. He left his home in Ireland for India to learn Yoga at 19 years old. He went to Venezuela to get to know plant medicine at 20. He's been ALL over this planet to learn and study under different spiritual traditions. And it is all culminating in his work in writing and film production on multiple new series headed for streamers soon. We cover a lot of ground! The interview starts with me contextualizing my book for a hot second... thank you, enjoy!

In this episode, we cover:

- The human-ness of the Bible

- Milarepa and multi-incarnation paintings of Thangka Buddhist paintings

- The Irish and US revolutions

- The brilliance of the film "Embrace of the Serpent"

- Being from Texas old school and the unique beauty of Austin, Texas

- Topanga Canyon as the Life Coach Capital of America

- Dylan's spiritual satire shows "Eden 2.0" and "Intentional"

- Fiction as the purest highest art form

- Back to Milarepa on the futility of this world, yet not being apathy

- Laozi on The Way vs. striving

- Everything in life is this moment

- Social media as antithetical to Buddhist self-defining

- "Prayer-formance" as the modern Pharisees vs. embodying wisdom deeply

- Social as content strategy vs. 'dear diary'

- The beauty of the availability of yoga and psychedelics nowadays

- The pejorative tone of "New Age"

- Dylan and Bob starting a new religion

- Astrology, the Eclipse, and transcending our astrological impacts

- And more

Perfect Peace Unfolding In Every Moment | Sameh Neseim

Saison 2 · Épisode 11

mercredi 23 octobre 2024Durée 01:38:49

Sameh Neseim is a certified mystic. He is certified, but that's not what I mean. His every step is a pilgrimage. His every breath is a meditation. I am continually blown away and inspired by my friend Sameh, an Egyptian-American who I met at Meta (then Facebook) back in 2019.

Sameh is a Spiritual and Mindfulness teacher, Self-Mastery Coach and Unity Prayer Chaplain. We met through being two global co-leads of Mindfulness@ Meta, our humble club of meditators within one of the largest conglomerates in the world. We were (and still are) the mystics in the machine. Sameh has since left FB and moved on to helping individuals and leaders out here in the wild.

In this episode, we cover:

- Corporate burnout leading to deliberate choice to change

- The connection between creativity and intuition

- Practical application of "my holiness envelops everything I see"... seeing the One in all including our workplace

- Intention of collaboration and sitting in the holiness of the present moment... detaching from proving anything, from the past and future

- Corporate as a beautiful environment to practice spirituality by dropping the need to be seen as right or important

- "You Are Enough"

- Going to our meditation practice with the intention to either be still and receive peace, or to receive specific inspiration for a project -- being specific! A morning meditation to get grounded for the day, an afternoon meditation on a creative project, and a nighttime meditation for rejuvenation and peace

- A Course in Miracles as a profound practical document for spiritual awakening, that the ego does not want you to read!

- When you want nothing of this world, you acknowledge your commitment to your own happiness

- Rumi helps us with pain and understanding the full experience of love and suffering

Abundance in the Illusion | Laurén Janelle Green

Saison 2 · Épisode 2

jeudi 30 mai 2024Durée 01:32:21

Let's get de-programmed! Let's re-learn to trust ourselves. Abundance, and nonduality. The Creative Process, and Astrology, Yogananda, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Disappearance of the Universe.

Laurén Janelle Green is a force of nature. She is an ex social media manager, astrologer, intuitive, writer, speaker, entrepreneur, spiritual coach, and universalist philosopher. We met through showing up on each other's For You Pages on TikTok back in '22, and I have learned so much from her. Her upbringing made my work relevant for her spiritual path, and her work is constantly relevant to answering my questions in the continual unfolding.

Laurén does an incredible job uncovering our internal beauty, our unique gifts, to let us thrive. She coaches a select few humans to "build a brand from a divine feminine perspective, grow a soul-led online community, and or just heal." What a fantastic triplet of outcomes! Enjoy our conversation across the philosophical buffet line.

Mythbusting Spirituality, New Age, Materialism And Mythbusting Aubrey Marcus | Aubrey Marcus

Saison 2 · Épisode 1

jeudi 23 mai 2024Durée 01:11:40

Aubrey Marcus is a fellow Austinite, spiritual teacher, entrepreneur, podcaster, psychonaut, philosopher, poet, and Instagram archer. He is the founder of Onnit, a globally disruptive brand based on a holistic health philosophy he calls Total Human Optimization. Onnit remains an industry leader with products optimizing millions of lives, including many top professional athletes around the world. Aubrey currently hosts the Aubrey Marcus Podcast, a motivational destination for conversations with the brightest minds in athletics, business, mindset, and spirituality with over 100 million listens. He is the author of the NYT Bestselling book "Own The Day, Own Your Life" and has been featured on the cover of Men’s Health and other publications. He has also produced several documentaries including Awake In The Darkness, Dragon of the Jungle, Ayahuasca, and Huachuma. He is currently the visionary behind the donation based coaching platform Fit For Service which recently hosted the transformational music festival, Arkadia.

Almost a year ago, I was a guest on the Aubrey Marcus Podcast. I am still not completely sure how, but it was a series of synchronistic events that led to a "before and after" for my writing career. I had been on a podcast or two before that, but after the AMP release, I've been on dozens. Aubrey generously shines his megaton spotlight on the occasional up-and-comer like yours truly and I am grateful.

We have a lot in common. We both believe in the power of psychedelic plant medicine. We both appreciate wisdom from a wide variety of spiritual traditions, the interfaith mystics in particular. And we both believe that "original sin" is a big 'ol lie. I wanted to give Aubrey the opportunity to mythbust common misconceptions around spirituality and New Age, as well as a few criticisms I see about him--by people who don't him or know his work intimately. We had a great time and I hope you enjoy.

When the Intention to Help Creates a Global Nonprofit | Aaron Jackson

Épisode 26

mercredi 12 mai 2021Durée 01:48:11

Aaron Jackson is the founder of PlantingPeace.org, a nonprofit he started fifteen years ago when he was 24 years old. His projects focus on a range of humanitarian and environmental initiatives, including a multi-national deworming campaign (they have successfully dewormed over 22 million starving children around the world); a network of orphanages and safe havens in developing countries (two orphanages in Haiti and two in India); LGBTQ rights advocacy, the Equality House and Transgender House; and rainforest conservation efforts in the Amazon.

The team listens to Aaron’s riveting stories detailing the extremely DIY-nature of his nonprofit’s humble beginnings. He started with one rental property in Haiti to house a few orphans, which led to smuggling deworming medication in backpacks, and eventually international recognition as a CNN Hero.

Date Yourself | lzbth.ai

Épisode 25

mercredi 24 mars 2021Durée 01:04:17

Elizabeth Nelson aka @lzbth.ai is a psych major turned graphic designer from Austin, Texas. When she’s not designing, she enjoys learning about maritime disasters, digging through thrift shops, and talking herself out of buying more houseplants. She’s currently freelancing in New York City, beating off the quarantine insanity by going on lots of long walks.

“Existential crisis meets textbook diagram”, is Elizabeth’s bio, summarizing a lot about where she is right now after the pandemic completely upended her entire life plan. She transmuted this ‘floating consciousness’ into her design work, reaching new success in a new territory. We talk about using the creative process to help unravel our insecurities & vulnerabilities, and how crucial self-love is throughout it all.
