52: RANT - Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Dementia
Épisode 52
vendredi 21 juillet 2023 • Durée 20:01
The thing with research is that new studies tend to get passed around on social media, sensationalized, and spread like wildfire. In many cases, it's probably not something you need to be overly worried about.
Today, I'm breaking down a new study that came out earlier this year, reported in the New York Times. It was about menopausal hormone therapy and dementia, and it's been kicking up a stir. I'm talking about this today as an example of how to look at these types of studies and determine what's legit in a world where seemingly contradictory research seems to be constantly popping up.
In this episode, I'm highlighting the strengths and limitations of the study and discussing the need for critical analysis when interpreting research studies, the differences between bioidentical hormone replacement and synthetic progestin, how to evaluate the risks and benefits of hormone therapy, why you need to do your research and more. I hope this discussion will empower you to examine the next study you see with a critical eye. Enjoy the episode!

The study parameters, including the types of hormones used, duration of use, and age of participants

Further research needed to clarify these results
Remembering to take sensationalized reports with a grain of salt
Why it's challenging to compare different types of medications used in hormone replacement therapy

Today I'm sharing the ins and outs of fibroids. I'm talking about what they are, factors that can contribute to their development, treatment options, how different phases of life can affect fibroids, the best diagnostic techniques, how to find the right doctor for you, and more. Remember, you deserve to feel comfortable and empowered in all aspects of your health, and there are always options for treatment. Enjoy the episode!

47: Birth Control Pills: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Épisode 47
jeudi 15 juin 2023 • Durée 29:15
Birth control pills have been around for decades, and most of that time, they were viewed as a net positive. Nowadays, you can't say "birth control pills" without being bombarded with their evils.
The truth is, they're not evil. If you need the pill for birth control, they're empowering and allow you to be in control of your reproductive health.
But physicians prescribe birth control pills for every problem under the sun, and I believe we are to blame for the stigma around the pill. The pill has become the band-aid solution for lazy medicine, whether it's acne, painful cramps, heavy periods, or many more symptoms. Add to that the lack of education these doctors give to their patients, and you find that many women choosing the pill did not do so from an informed place.
Today I'm doing a deep dive into everything you need to know about birth control pills. I'm discussing the different types of pills, how they work, benefits and risks, how to choose the right one for you, and more. The most important thing I want you to take from this episode is that you are your best healthcare advocate. Do your own research and make the choice you feel is best for you. Enjoy the episode!
Highlights
What's in birth control pills?
Three different types of birth control pills
Possible benefits of combination pills
The problem with using birth control pills as a band-aid solution
Potential benefits and risks of progesterone-only pills
How birth control pills work and how to use them
Side effects, risks, and considerations of taking birth control pills
Myths and frequently asked questions about the pill
The good, the bad, the ugly, and the uglier
Why it's crucial to address underlying issues
Being your best healthcare advocate
