52: RANT - Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Dementia21 Jul 202300:20:01

The thing with research is that new studies tend to get passed around on social media, sensationalized, and spread like wildfire. In many cases, it's probably not something you need to be overly worried about.

Today, I'm breaking down a new study that came out earlier this year, reported in the New York Times. It was about menopausal hormone therapy and dementia, and it's been kicking up a stir. I'm talking about this today as an example of how to look at these types of studies and determine what's legit in a world where seemingly contradictory research seems to be constantly popping up.

In this episode, I'm highlighting the strengths and limitations of the study and discussing the need for critical analysis when interpreting research studies, the differences between bioidentical hormone replacement and synthetic progestin, how to evaluate the risks and benefits of hormone therapy, why you need to do your research and more. I hope this discussion will empower you to examine the next study you see with a critical eye. Enjoy the episode!

Further research needed to clarify these results

Remembering to take sensationalized reports with a grain of salt

Why it's challenging to compare different types of medications used in hormone replacement therapy

Fibroids are a topic I'm constantly asked about in my office, on Instagram, and whenever I do my Saturday Q&As.

While they're super common, most women don't have symptoms and can leave them without treatment. Unfortunately, fibroids can be difficult to live with for women who do have symptoms.

Today I'm sharing the ins and outs of fibroids. I'm talking about what they are, factors that can contribute to their development, treatment options, how different phases of life can affect fibroids, the best diagnostic techniques, how to find the right doctor for you, and more. Remember, you deserve to feel comfortable and empowered in all aspects of your health, and there are always options for treatment. Enjoy the episode!

Common symptoms of fibroids

Treatment options for fibroids, including medications and medical procedures

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common conditions I encounter in my practice, yet it's surrounded by misinformation. 47: Birth Control Pills: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly15 Jun 202300:29:15

Birth control pills have been around for decades, and most of that time, they were viewed as a net positive. Nowadays, you can't say "birth control pills" without being bombarded with their evils.

The truth is, they're not evil. If you need the pill for birth control, they're empowering and allow you to be in control of your reproductive health.

But physicians prescribe birth control pills for every problem under the sun, and I believe we are to blame for the stigma around the pill. The pill has become the band-aid solution for lazy medicine, whether it's acne, painful cramps, heavy periods, or many more symptoms. Add to that the lack of education these doctors give to their patients, and you find that many women choosing the pill did not do so from an informed place.

Today I'm doing a deep dive into everything you need to know about birth control pills. I'm discussing the different types of pills, how they work, benefits and risks, how to choose the right one for you, and more. The most important thing I want you to take from this episode is that you are your best healthcare advocate. Do your own research and make the choice you feel is best for you. Enjoy the episode!

Highlights

What's in birth control pills?

Three different types of birth control pills

Possible benefits of combination pills

The problem with using birth control pills as a band-aid solution

Potential benefits and risks of progesterone-only pills

How birth control pills work and how to use them

Side effects, risks, and considerations of taking birth control pills

Myths and frequently asked questions about the pill

The good, the bad, the ugly, and the uglier

46: Snake Oil, Semmelweis, and the Sanity of Evolved Medicine08 Jun 202300:32:42

There's room in the world for all the different ideas. Unfortunately, many of my colleagues would disagree.

I've been on Facebook a lot lately, and I've noticed that many doctors who don't share my opinion on alternative medicine jump straight to name-calling. Instead of respectful disagreement or sharing of ideas, culturally, we've gotten to a place where everything is so polarized that it's them and us, and there is no room for a middle ground.

The sad part is that the patients will suffer the most as a result.

Today I'm sharing a little bit of a history lesson and talking about how I deal with the rude and condescending doctors who refuse to have an open conversation about alternative ways of thinking. I'll also discuss different philosophical concepts and how medicine has evolved. Enjoy the episode!

Highlights

How standards of care change and the four humors in ancient medicine

Ignaz Semmelweis and his discovery of the origin of puerperal fever

The terrible backlash that Semmelweis faced before ultimately being proven right

Planck's principle and the unfortunate truth about the evolution of medicine

Joseph Lister's struggle to get mainstream acceptance for his antiseptic practices

The dismissal of alternative medicine by modern doctors and the over-weighting of evidence-based medicine

Supporting patients' choices and empowering patients to walk a path that's right for them

How the thoughts and accepted norms of the medical community change over the years

Why we need to make room for different ideas and respectful disagreement in medicine

The current state of medicine and why doctors need to fight to get medicine back

45: Hysterectomy 101: What, Why, and How Removing the Uterus02 Jun 202300:34:33

Hysterectomy is one of the most commonly performed and probably overutilized surgeries worldwide. In most circumstances, a hysterectomy is not done in a life-or-death situation but as a final course of action after other options have been exhausted.

Unfortunately, there's still a lot of misinformation and a big gap between how medical professionals approach hysterectomies and the public perception of the procedure. Patients will call it one thing, and the doctor calls it another, leading to confusion.

Today I'm clearing up common misconceptions about hysterectomies because they're not all alike. From different types and techniques to recovery expectations, I'll bring all the common issues to light. As usual, I hope you find this valuable, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Highlights

Types of hysterectomies and how the outcomes are different

How the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and tubes are connected

The three methods of hysterectomy and the benefits and drawbacks of each

My opinion on the benefits of robotic hysterectomies

The importance of the vaginal cuff

Common reasons for hysterectomy, including fibroids, pelvic pain, and bleeding, and when surgery is considered

Getting yourself into the right headspace for surgery

What to expect on surgery day and for the recovery period

Why it's essential to contact your surgeon if you have questions about your hysterectomy recovery

44: Semaglutide: Wonder Drug or Chemical Anorexia26 May 202300:18:33

Weight loss products are a magnet for controversy. From fraudulent claims to critics and copycats, everybody has an opinion. Today I'm talking about the one currently on everybody's mind, GLP-1 drugs like Ozemic and Mounjaro.

There are a lot of people in the healthcare community, especially alternative health, who are demonizing these medications. And why? I think it's because they work and put some people out of business.

While there are risks and potentially serious side effects, there's a lot of misinformation out there on these drugs. In this episode, I'm sharing how they work, the truth about the problems, what you need to know before taking them, and why I believe they are an excellent option for many women struggling to lose weight.

Being on medication to lose weight doesn't mean you're cutting a corner. It means you need some assistance, and that's okay. Try not to get bogged down in the negativity, find yourself a doctor that's an expert with these medications, and feel good about yourself. Enjoy the episode!

42: You Are What You Eat: Culinary and Integrative Medicine with Dr. Melinda Ring11 May 202300:46:39

Culinary medicine exists at the intersection of the art of cooking and the science of medicine.

When we understand the connection between nutrition and health, we are empowered to make better choices that strengthen our bodies and put us on the path to optimal health.

Unfortunately, many of us never learned how to cook healthy meals. Packaged foods and Wonder bread were staples in our diets, and we carried those habits into adulthood. At the same time, there's so much conflicting information about what we should and shouldn't eat, making it challenging to figure out which way to go.

Today I'm joined by Dr. Melinda Ring, Director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Northwestern University, to talk about the power of food as medicine. Melinda is an expert in integrative medicine, lifestyle medicine, and culinary medicine, and she's spent over two decades witnessing the transformative power of food as medicine.

In this conversation, Melinda and I discuss the differences between different fields within preventative medicine, why learning to cook is especially valuable, how to use food as medicine, and why we need to tailor our diets according to our individual health conditions, goals, and genetics.

Whether you want to lose weight or improve your health, I highly recommend following Melinda on Instagram and checking out all her available resources.

"If you want to feel well, you've got to let your body know that it's safe." - Dr. Izabella Wentz

There are only two hormonal issues that are life and death: thyroid and adrenals. Unfortunately, when it comes to adrenals, what you think you should be doing is probably the opposite of what you should be doing.

Whether you identify with the burned-out Saboteur or the Workaholic who's constantly pushing, you're not alone. 37: The Bull$hit Fear of Estrogen: I'm Ranting Again06 Apr 202300:28:07

Estrogen has many protective effects, from bone and heart health to thyroid function and sexual motivation.

I can't tell you how often I've put a woman on estrogen only to return, saying she felt better for a couple of weeks but decided to stop the medication. Why? Because her friends told her that estrogen causes breast cancer.

This narrative is spreading like wildfire, and it's frankly misogynistic. Why should women have to suffer the life-altering adverse effects of low estrogen when they have an alternative? How can you say across the board that no one should use this treatment when it has improved the lives of so many people?

We've already done a couple of episodes on estrogen, and today I'm diving in again to get the message across that estrogen should not be feared. While it may not be for everyone, every woman suffering the effects of low estrogen deserves to make a well-informed decision about their treatment.

In this episode, I'm sharing how the "estrogen causes breast cancer" myth started, the crucial roles of estrogen in your body, why many menopausal women experience a significant improvement in quality of life with bioidentical hormone therapy, estrogen alternatives you can consider, and more. Enjoy the episode!

Why women shouldn't be afraid of estrogen causing cancer

We shouldn't force women to suffer the negative effects of estrogen deprivation for decades

How estrogen impacts the thyroid

Why you need to combine estrogen and progesterone

The critical importance of vetting your sources before making a decision

36: Blue Algae + Sustainability with Örlö Nutrition30 Mar 202300:47:01

Every year, millions of people take dietary supplements hoping to improve their health. The problem is, most of us have no idea what's in the pills we're taking.

This is particularly true for omega-3 fatty acids, one of the top three supplements I recommend for women of all ages. So many of the omega-3 products on the shelf are low-quality, rancid oils that are a waste of money and can cause more harm than good. On top of that, there are serious issues around the sustainability of the fish oil production process, which is the traditionally recommended source of omega-3.

If you're going to invest in your health, it's crucial to find a high-quality product but also a company that you can get behind, and that's what I found with Örlö Nutrition. Today I'm joined by Örlö's Corinna Bellizzi to discuss the benefits of algae-based omega-3 fatty acids.

In this conversation, Corinna and I talk about the role of omega-3 in hormone production, the benefits and challenges of different sources of omega-3 supplements, why we should pay attention to the bioavailability of the supplements we take, the advantages of polar omegas over standard fish oils, how Örlö's sustainable production process works, why you don't need to worry about fish burps and stomach issues with polar omegas, the problems caused by low-quality omega-3 supplements, and more. If you aren't already taking omega-3, I want you on an omega-3. I'm switching from fish oil to algae from Örlö, and I highly recommend you consider it too.

Highlights

The benefits and challenges of krill-based supplements

Why the omegas in Örlö Nutrition's products are significantly more bioavailable than fish oil

The advantages of polar omegas over standard fish oils

How Örlö's sustainable production process works

The issue with relying on eating fish as your only source of omega-3 fats

How sustainability is integrated into every aspect of Örlö's products

Why you don't need to worry about fish burps and stomach issues with polar omegas

How you can quickly tell if your oils are rancid

The issues caused by rancid fats

The top three supplements I recommend: maca, magnesium, omega-3

How omega-3 fats can help with period symptoms

Questions to ask when choosing a high-quality omega-3 supplement

Why Corinna is no longer personally in support of fish oil

35: Endometriosis- Taming the Monster with Khush Sra23 Mar 202300:51:20

Endometriosis is a debilitating condition affecting millions of women worldwide, yet many go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years.

Early diagnosis leads to better outcomes and improved quality of life. As part of our Endometriosis Awareness Month series, I'm joined by holistic health coach Khush Sra today. In addition to being an Endometriosis Nutritionist, Khush has personally suffered with endometriosis and was diagnosed around 20 years ago. She knows the ins and outs of endo, not just from a practitioner's perspective and as a woman and a patient.

In my practice, I've found the best approach to treating endo is multifaceted and covers multiple angles. Many surgeons who are excellent at removing endometriosis tissue don't have a plan for preventing recurrence beyond prescribing the pill. This is where nutritionists like Khush can come in and provide additional tools and expertise.

In this conversation, Khush and I discuss her journey from years of deteriorating health with severe endometriosis to being completely symptom free, her approach to working with endometriosis patients, the importance of understanding the individual when creating a treatment plan, and more. This interview was one of my favorites so far, and I believe this is one of the most important topics we've discussed. I know you'll get a lot of value from what Khush shares.

Highlights

Khush's endometriosis diagnosis and deteriorating health despite multiple surgeries and medications

The recognition that the traditional medical path wasn't helping

Pushing through fear and guilt without enough resources

Characteristics of the four stages of endometriosis

The isolation that comes with invisible illnesses

34: Endometriosis - The Misinformation Darling of Women's Health16 Mar 202300:40:43

Endometriosis is a long-term disease, but it's not a terminal illness.

While endo symptoms usually present at a young age, it takes approximately seven to ten years for most women to get diagnosed. It's not uncommon to hear of women being bounced around the medical system and silenced with birth control pills to mask their symptoms, with no one taking a closer look. Plus, a doctor needs to confirm the presence of endometrial implants through surgery before you can get a definitive diagnosis.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and in honor of that, I'm sharing an end-to-end rundown of endometriosis from symptoms to diagnosis and treatment. In this episode, I talk about theories around why endo develops, why it's become a highly-charged topic, the stages of endometriosis, common symptoms, treatment options for endometriosis, how to find the right practitioner for you, and more.

If you've struggled with this, you have to become your best advocate. Let's not waste more of your life. Let's figure this out and get you the support you need to improve your quality of life. Enjoy the episode!

33: Thyroid Nation with McCall McPherson, PA09 Mar 202300:34:22

The thyroid gland is a contentious topic in the medical community.

In my practice, I've seen many women with debilitating symptoms dismissed by doctors only interested in checking TSH levels and sending them on their way.

Clinicians react from a place of defensiveness, not wanting anyone to question their authority. With the latest research pushing for TSH ranges to be expanded, it seems like the medical field truly under-appreciates the severity of symptoms of hypothyroidism and the massive impact it can have on the quality of life.

Today I'm joined by my friend and colleague, McCall McPherson, PA, to discuss the issues many women with thyroid problems experience. She's the creator of Thyroid Nation and an authority on all things thyroid. After suffering from the mismanagement of her hypothyroidism, McCall lives, breathes, and thrives in understanding the nuances of proper thyroid care.

In this conversation, we talk about why most medical providers aren't doing enough for thyroid patients, misconceptions about weight loss, everything you need to know about thyroid testing, dietary and supplement recommendations, and more.

Despite what you may have been told, none of this is in your head. With the proper guidance, these issues are controllable and fixable. Enjoy the episode!

About McCall McPherson

McCall McPherson is the founder of Modern Thyroid Clinic, a thyroid-centered functional medicine practice in Austin, Texas, and the now owner and Chief-Thyroid-Hope-Giver of Thyroid Nation.

She is a physician assistant, and her philosophy is simple: There is no reason to still have thyroid symptoms. She spends her time helping to make it so by giving her patients their lives back while teaching and advocating for the other millions suffering who aren't her patients.

29: Bad Breasts: Breast Implant Illness And Gaslighting with Candice Barley09 Feb 202300:36:49

It's not all in your head.

As you probably know, I'm a firm advocate for the removal of foreign bodies and foreign materials, particularly within my practice with the Essure coils. Many women go through a long journey to have the problem acknowledged and often spend years dismissed by doctors. A big part of this podcast is about patient advocacy and empowering you to stand up and speak your mind regarding your health.

Today I'm joined by actress Candice Barley, who has become a patient advocate after her harrowing experience with breast implant illness. Within a few months of getting breast implants at age 24, Candice started experiencing extreme chronic fatigue, which her doctor dismissed as a side effect of having two young children. From then on, Candice experienced one issue after the next, with increasingly debilitating symptoms, until she connected her implants and her illness. Almost immediately after her explant surgery, everything began to improve.

In this episode, Candice shares her journey with breast implant illness and explant surgery, the symptoms many women experience but never connect to their implants, the dismissive response most women receive from their doctors, what to do if you think you might be experiencing breast implant illness, and more.

Breast implant illness is a relatively new topic, and many people in the medical community still shrug it off. If you have breast implants, you'll get a lot of insights from this episode and the resources on Candice's website. Enjoy the episode!

Candice's repeated saline ruptures and implant exchanges

Escalating health and hormonal issues after each procedure

26: Hard To Kill with OBGYN Dr Jaime Seeman19 Jan 202300:48:46

"Those that don't have time for wellness will eventually have to make time for illness." - Dr. Jaime Seeman

You should be the number one advocate for your health. Like I tell my patients, I can give you the tools, and I can give you ideas, but ultimately you've got to do it yourself. We all have an innate drive to propagate our DNA. Do you want that to be a legacy of heart disease, or do you want it to be a legacy of longevity and healthiness?

Today I'm joined by OBGYN and author of Hard to Kill, Dr. Jaime Seeman. While pregnant with her third daughter, Dr. Jaime tragically lost one of her best friends, and the experience made her consider her mortality for the first time. Wanting to be an example for her patients and daughters, she started walking the walk and went from pre-diabetic and sedentary to strong and healthy.

Health is all-encompassing, and being Hard to Kill is about more than being physically fit. In the book, Dr. Jaime covers the five pillars of becoming Hard to Kill and the steps you can take to get there.

This was one of my favorite interviews, and Dr. Jaime shared a ton of actionable recommendations. In this conversation, we talk about her journey from nutritionist to OBGYN, why she decided to train in integrative medicine, why the five pillars matter, how you can start integrating them into your life, and more. Dr. Jaime is an all-around badass and a wealth of information, and I know you'll enjoy this episode.

24: Hemp Your Hormones with Hemplily05 Jan 202300:38:56

"Consider natural alternatives; your body wants to heal." - Terri Long

For years Terri Long suffered from chronic pain and fatigue that left her struggling to function in everyday life. She bounced from doctor to doctor before finally being given a fibromyalgia diagnosis. But even with the medication she received, she still felt horrible.

Eventually, fed up with being stuck and believing her body could heal itself given the right circumstances and environment, Terri decided to take matters into her own hands. Her research started her natural healing journey and led to her discovery of the benefits of cannabis and hemp products. In 2017, Terri founded Hemplily with the mission of helping people get to rid of their pain and balance their minds and bodies.

Today Terri is joining us to dispel a lot of the misinformation about hemp and CBD products. Since CBD hit the mainstream, tons of new products hit the market, and many bad players have come out with low-quality products sold under misleading labels. Unfortunately, that left many people with a negative impression of CBD.

In this conversation, Terri and I talk about how hemp extracts have been integral on her healing journey, what you need to look for in a high-quality product, the pros and cons of different formats, how you can get started, and more. In my practice, I've prescribed it for issues like menstrual cramps, migraines, fibromyalgia, insomnia, and anxiety. I encourage you to be open to exploring natural alternatives and how the right hemp extracts could be helpful for you.

23: Shut Your Pie-Hole: Intermittent Fasting and Weight Loss with Cynthia Thurlow29 Dec 202200:41:35

"We would not have evolved as a species if we could not have gone through periods of food feasting and famine." - Cynthia Thurlow

From ancient Rome to the Industrial Revolution, people have been fasting for various reasons, including religious rites and social customs. But while it's not a new practice, modern-day intermittent fasting exists in a new environment where food is abundant, but nutrient density is much lower than in the past.

22: The Power Of Progesterone and The Unbalanced Heroine22 Dec 202200:35:47

Progesterone is the great calmer. It's the hormone responsible for pregnancy and is probably my second favorite (right after testosterone). With its central role in the menstrual cycle, I've seen progesterone help many women in my practice.

In my book, The Hormone Balance Bible, the archetype for progesterone deficiency is the Unbalanced Heroine. It's a common archetype associated with insomnia, irritability, and feeling out of control. Unfortunately, in the media, they are often portrayed as the stereotypical "hormonal" woman and are typically cast as the mean girl or the laughing stock.

For today's episode, I'm sharing what progesterone deficiency typically looks like, how progesterone levels fluctuate over the four stages of the menstrual cycle, what you need to know about testing and hormone replacement, and how Unbalanced Heroines can get back in balance using my S.H.I.N.E.S. protocol. Enjoy the episode!

21: Feminade and Affordable Hormone Testing: Roya Pakzad, CEO16 Dec 202200:38:56

"Honor your body. If something doesn't feel right, it's because it's not right." - Roya Pakzad

Being in control of your health is empowering, but often, that's easier said than done. High deductibles, restrictions on insurance coverage, and the cost of working with functional medicine practitioners are just some of the barriers that prevent women from accessing the full range of testing and modalities that could provide them with the help they need.

Today I'm joined by Roya Pakzad, CEO and founder of Feminade, to talk about women's health and hormones and how the medical system has minimized women. After dealing with hormonal imbalances and nightmare experiences in the traditional medical system, Roya was determined to create a platform that gives women answers. From that mission, Feminade was born.

In this conversation, Roya and I talk about why most women would benefit from annual hormone testing, the problems with access to appropriate testing and understanding the results, why Feminade has been life-changing for so many people, what you can do to support the women-led uprising in Iran, and more.

About Roya Pakzad
Roya Pakzad is a fierce doer with the mind of an engineer and the heart of an advocate. Her interest in helping all women take charge of their hormones is personal. Her journey led to many naturopathic and functional medicine doctors who listened to her story and helped her get to the root cause of her symptoms. Along the way, she discovered protocols that balance hormones instead of masking them. Because she wasn't satisfied with simply healing herself, she founded Feminade to make holistic healthcare that targets hormonal imbalances accessible and affordable for everyone with a uterus.

20: Stressed The F#CK Out: Cortisol And Your Health08 Dec 202200:43:01

Cortisol gets a lot of bad publicity, but if you didn't have it, you would die.

Produced by the adrenal glands, cortisol is your body's primary stress hormone released as part of the body's response to a threatening situation. But when cortisol levels are on the low or high end of the normal range, many women experience symptoms that significantly impact their quality of life.

In my book, The Hormone Balance Bible, I explore this in detail through the lens of two archetypes that revolve around cortisol: the Workaholic and the Saboteur. Today I'm sharing the characteristics of these archetypes, common symptoms, and recommendations for how each archetype can use my S.H.I.N.E.S. protocol to find balance. Enjoy the episode!

18: The Pitfalls of Hormone Pellets: The Bad, The Worst, and The Ugly23 Nov 202200:38:25

I can't bring myself emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically to use hormone pellets with my patients.

Hormone pellets are tiny pellets containing hormones and medications inserted under your skin and replaced every three to six months.

In my clinic, many unhappy patients come to me with complications from pellets. Outside of my clinical experience, I also tried pellets myself a few years ago, which was the worst experience of my life.

Looking at the science, there are much better methods of getting bioidentical hormones, such as topical creams and sublingual troches, and they don't come with the downsides of hormone pellets.

Today I'm sharing the top ten reasons why I'm a pellet anarchist, misleading ways that pellets are marketed, the things women need to know before using pellets, and what to do if you've had pellets and want to make a change.

Highlights

How hormone pellets work

Pitfall #1: They're expensive

  • On average, pellets are around three times more expensive than other delivery options for bioidentical hormones
  • Pellets average around $100-125/month versus around $45/month for sublingual troches, tablets, or topicals from a compounding pharmacy

Pitfall #2: Hormone levels are too high

  • The sawtooth pattern that occurs with pellets: initially dramatically increased hormone levels followed by a steep decline

Pitfall #3: It's a surgical procedure

  • Adverse side effects from the procedure
  • Although it's a minor procedure, it's one you'll have to have repeated every couple of months

Pitfall #4: Once they're in, they don't come out

  • If you have side effects or complications, you're stuck with the pellets for 3-6 months

Pitfall #5: You're subjected to minor surgery every 3-6 months

  • Two irreversible side effects of pellet testosterone therapy if the levels go too high

Pitfall #6: Irregular absorption rates

  • Pellets are sold as being the ultimate in stable absorption rates, but research shows that's not true

Pitfall #7: It's a cash cow for providers

  • The financial upside incentivizes providers to push pellets as the top hormone replacement option

Pitfall #8: Who's inserting them?

  • Lots of times, the providers putting in pellets are hormone dabblers, not experts

Pitfall #9: It's a club

  • Hormone pellet companies charge providers a monthly fee to use the company name, logo, and product

Pitfall #10: You're a number

  • Hormone treatment plans should be personalized
  • Why I don't like protocol-driven hormones

What you can do if you've had pellets and you want to make a change

Bioidentical hormones versus synthetic hormones

17: Penises, Prostates, and PHAT Syndrome: Confessions of a Men's Health Provider with Dr. Jerry Bailey17 Nov 202200:37:37

You can't biohack your way out of your symptoms; you have to address the root cause.

Where many testosterone clinics are quick to identify low testosterone and start testosterone therapy, it's often a sign of many deeper issues. This is where poly-hormonal adrenal testosterone (PHAT) syndrome comes in.

PHAT syndrome presents with a host of symptoms, including lower testosterone levels, insulin resistance, increased body fat, and sexual dysfunction, and it's something today's guest has identified more and more in his patients in the 35 to 60-year-old range.

Today's guest, Dr. Jerry Bailey, joins me to talk about something I hardly ever get the chance to discuss: men's health. In our conversation, we talk about globally declining testosterone levels, what PHAT syndrome really is and how it presents, what you can do if you or your partner have symptoms of PHAT syndrome, prostate health and causes of elevated PSA, and more. I learned a lot from this conversation, and I know you will too!

14: A Tale Of Two Thyroids: Testing and Treatment of Hypo and Hyperthyroidism27 Oct 202200:41:38

Thyroid hormone is one of the two hormones that are critical to our survival.

Unfortunately, thyroid disease is very common, and women are around five to eight times more likely to be diagnosed with a thyroid condition than a man.

In my practice, I see many women who have either been diagnosed with thyroid disease or who have subclinical thyroid disease, where they have all the symptoms but have often been dismissed by doctors because their labs are within the normal range.

Today I'm exploring the role of the thyroid in our bodies, different types of thyroid disease, why I don't think we should be satisfied with being on the low end of normal lab ranges, common symptoms of thyroid disease, my approach to thyroid testing, how you can advocate for yourself with your doctor, and more. 12: Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer? No - Well, Maybe13 Oct 202200:39:35

How are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives?

Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI).

The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn't put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study's limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative.

Today I'm sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can't benefit from estrogen therapy.

The bottom line is hormone replacement therapy is a personal choice. We have to look at the risks versus benefits, not expecting it to be a panacea for everything that ails you, but as something that could significantly improve your quality of life when done with caution.

Let's try not to be afraid of estrogen - it's not a bad thing.
