If you’re ambitious but no longer willing to burn out for another promotion, you’re in the right place. I’m glad you’re here.
This podcast helps high-achieving mid-career women gain career clarity and confidently design their next chapter, whether that means evolving inside corporate, exploring a portfolio career, or building a hybrid path.
If you’re ready to stop default climbing and start making strategic, aligned decisions about your future, this podcast will give you the insight and tools to move forward with confidence.
Hey 👋 , I’m Janine Esbrand, corporate lawyer turned career strategist and executive coach.
For years, I had my eye on the corporate partner title. I kept my head down, worked the long hours, and chased the next big deal because that’s what success was supposed to look like.
Then I became a mother. And I realised I didn’t want to build a life around my career, I wanted to build a career around my life. So, I stepped off the default corporate path and designed a portfolio career that allows me to work on my terms, create meaningful impact, and show up fully, both professionally and personally.
Now, I help ambitious mid-career women do the same: gain clarity, challenge the default ladder, and design aligned, sustainable careers that reflect who they are now, not who they used to be.
This podcast will give you the strategy, mindset and tools to make it happen.
So grab your notebook, pour your hot drink of choice and lets design what’s next.

298 I Leaving Dream Jobs & Redefining Success with Patricia Ortega
vendredi 7 novembre 2025 • Durée 42:17
🎙️ Episode Overview
In this powerful conversation, Patricia and Janine explore what it really means to grow beyond a prestigious title and step into work that aligns with who you are becoming. Prestige often feels safe—law, tenure, the senior role everyone recognises on LinkedIn, but real growth begins when the title no longer fits the person wearing it.
This episode unpacks why nothing is wasted in your career: every season, every skill, every chapter becomes transferable capital for what’s next.
Together we explore identity beyond job titles, how to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset inside and outside organisations, and why success must be rooted in values rather than status.
If you’ve outgrown a role, feel pulled toward new impact, or are navigating a career chapter that no longer aligns, this conversation will help you reframe your experience, re-anchor your direction, and move with clarity.
1. Why redefining success is essential once you’ve “made it.”
We discuss how reaching the top of a traditional path can reveal misalignment — and why that discomfort is powerful data pointing toward your next chapter.
2. How to separate identity from job title.
You’ll learn how to honour your past work without letting it limit future possibilities, and how to reintroduce yourself by impact rather than labels.
3. The mindset and practices that help you navigate career transitions with confidence.
From transferring your toolkit to adopting an entrepreneurial operating system, this episode shows you how to make evidence-based decisions, iterate without self-judgement, and build a career anchored in values.
1. Audit your definition of success.
Ask yourself: “Does this measure meaning or just status?” Rewrite your success metrics based on values, impact, and desired rhythms of work.
2. Create your “portable skills” inventory.
List the cognitive, strategic, and relational skills you’ve built that are transferable across industries and roles. This becomes your confidence and positioning tool.
3. Separate your ‘what’ from your ‘how.’
Get clear on what you truly want next—impact, income range, type of work—before worrying about the logistics. Treat the “how” as a solvable project once the vision is set.

vendredi 31 octobre 2025 • Durée 10:39
Episode Overview
In today’s episode, I’m diving into a powerful yet often overlooked question that can make or break your preparation for career-defining conversations — whether it's an interview, a performance review, or a high-stakes pitch.
This episode was inspired by a recent conversation with one of my coaching clients who is navigating the Career Change Maker Process. As we discussed an upcoming chat she had with a recruiter, one simple question shifted everything for her and I believe it can do the same for you.
What you'll learn:
- The power and importance of preparing for career advancing conversations in the right way
- How to move from reactive to proactive communication
- Why this one question works across interviews, reviews, and pitches
If you want to show up fully prepared and leave a lasting impression in your next important conversation, this episode is a must-listen.
Action Step:
Before your next career conversation, ask yourself: What do I want them to know about me, my experience, and my expertise by the end of this conversation? Then prepare with that focus in mind.

208 I How To Use The Career Skills You Already Have To Move Industry And Increase Your Income
Épisode 208
jeudi 23 février 2023 • Durée 13:24
In today’s episode I am talking about how to move industry and earn more, without the traditional industry experience.
A lot of people I talk to at the moment are discussing moving industries, so I am really excited to share my insights and tips on this topic with you.
It may seem intimidating entering a new industry and I know a lot of people have reservations, but there are things you can do to avoid having to start at the bottom or take a pay cut.
Why do so many of us question whether an industry change will be possible for us? We see and hear of success stories from people who switched industry all the time, in fact many of my past guests have done just that.
Firstly we need to pay attention to where we get our information from, a recruiter may be less encouraging of you moving industry because it makes their job a little trickier – that doesn’t make it impossible.
We are also seeing a big industry shift in the way experience is viewed – the priority is now on whether a candidate has the ability to excel in a role, not necessarily experience. This is where you need to focus if wanting to switch industry.
Initially you need to identify your transferable skills, and then take it that one step further and focus on the results. By focusing on the results you achieved through that skill set, and demonstrating how these results are similar to the results the hiring company are looking for, it makes it clear as to how you would add value in that role.
Something I also see clients overlook is the value of their perspective – by coming from a different industry you are bringing a whole new perspective and outlook that can be incredibly useful in problem solving.
So what next?
1. Research – immerse yourself in the industry, identify gaps of knowledge and work to fill them
2. Connect the dots – identify the skills, results and perspective you have, and clearly show that they are invaluable in the role
As always, if you want any support with how to position yourself for a new role, just get in touch.
I will also be jumping on LinkedIn live each Wednesday at 12 noon (UK time) for regular “Career Conversations”, so tune in for future streams!

207 | Why Your Current Schedule Leads To Burnout: The #1 Way I Find Peace By Managing Time With Detola Amure
Épisode 207
jeudi 16 février 2023 • Durée 33:50
In today’s episode I am talking to Detola Amure about time management and the tools and strategies we can use to stay on top of our workload.
Detola started her career in Management Consulting, and then moved on to become a Business Analyst, working with many industry giants. Then in 2013, Detola launched her own coaching practise “Super Working Mums”, providing leadership and productivity coaching to overwhelmed working mothers to allow them to find purpose and harness their time to manifest their big career goals. Earlier last year, Detola started The Productivity Company, utilising her experience working with individuals to drive productivity, retention and workforce happiness in a corporate space.
On top of this Detola is a mother, activator, podcast host, author and philanthropist – making her the perfect guest to talk about productivity!
We first discuss how Detola approaches managing all these roles to achieve work life harmony, and recognising that things can’t always be perfectly balanced, at times some areas will be less productive than others. Recognising the season that you are going through allows you to prioritise areas accordingly, which means you can stay more focused and enjoy the time you have.
We then talk about how Detola navigated becoming involved in multiple roles, and the importance of knowing and embracing your purpose, and from there accepting and pursuing opportunities that align with this purpose.
“Start with that one thing, do it well, and then as opportunities begin to come to you, don’t say no.”
Detola also shares her experience of trauma, how it affected her productivity and ability to work and how she overcame that to refocus on her true purpose and take back control of her time.
What you will Learn:
1. We as women go through multiple “seasons” in our life – recognising and embracing them can allow us to prioritise our time effectively and enjoy them more.
2. A great starting point to navigating a multifaceted career is to identify your purpose, and pursue and accept opportunities that align with this.
3. How to step away from the vicious cycle of “hustle mode” and put aside time to take rest and let the ideas come to you.

206 | Not Sure Which Career Path Is Right? This Simple Test Helps You Avoid Making The Wrong Move
Épisode 206
jeudi 9 février 2023 • Durée 17:23
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast I talk about how to validate your career change ideas and avoid making the wrong move.
I wanted to cover this as I see a lot of people holding themselves back from making a career transition because they are fearful of making a mistake. Today you'll learn practical strategies that you can implement so you can validate the ideas you're considering.
What you will learn:
- How to look at your experiences differently - As Nelson Mandela said: "I never lose. I either win or I learn". We learn our biggest lessons when times are challenging.
- How to shift your perspective around making a wrong move - You can always change your mind and you can always course correct. You have to 'do' in order for you to move forward though. Taking action is what gets you to the right place.
- How to validate your ideas - Gathering the right data is key. If you can form a clear idea backed with evidence and data that proves that it's a good step to take, you'll feel much more confident about making a transition.
Episode Highlights:
02.30: A fear of making the wrong move often comes because we don't want to waste time and we worry that the decision has to be final.
04.59: Making a decision is never final. You can always move, shift, pivot and course correct. There are always opportunities to change.
06.55: Validating your ideas is an important piece in getting unstuck. Without this, changing career can feel risky because what you're doing right now is what you know and feel comfortable with.
8.43: The top two methods for validating your career change ideas taken from my Career Clarity Accelerator: Golden nugget conversations and test driving your ideas.
16:58: Gathering data and making a data driven decision allows you to be strategic in your career move.
17:53: Lack of clarity is often what holds us back.

205 | The Truth About "Career Stability" & Why Playing It Safe Isn't Helping Your Income
mercredi 1 février 2023 • Durée 20:55
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast I talk about three career mistakes that most women make in their mid 30s. I talk about the common patterns that come up in making career-related decisions and what strategies can be made to overcome those.
The reason why I want to focus on this is to help women make better career change strategies and showcase their achievements and results in a better way.
Episode Highlights:
02.03: The first mistake that I see is that many of us don't have or fail to update our career development strategy.
06.07: You can either take the passive approach or you can take the proactive approach. And those that take the proactive approach are typically those who are going to get ahead and that is going to excel.
07.14: The second mistake that I see is that people are not tracking their metrics. Not aware of your metrics. Not aware of the data that links to the results that you get. So you may be showing up and doing work, but you're not tracking the output.
15.02: When it comes to your career development, you get to do so much more to move things forward in a way that's a lot easier than it was then for many people before so embrace that and recognise that we have lots of tools at our disposal that can support us with our career development.
What you will learn:
- When you are in your 20s, it's all about you establishing yourself for many people. Because you are in a stage of figuring things out in your 20s, you are very much looking externally for violence. When you get into your 30s and you start doing the work and you Start learning and you start developing, you start growing and you start increasing your level of awareness about what goes on in the world.
- You need to update your career development strategy. If you haven't really thought about what it is, you want to be doing with your career in this next phase and you are still on the same journey that you have been on since your 20s. Then there is an opportunity here for you to really think about where I am going and what do I want to be doing.
- If you haven't been tracking what you have been doing over the year and over the time, whether it's quarterly or whether it's a year you haven't been tracking. When you sit down in the meeting and you need to be able to say what it is you have been doing, it's really hard to recall that.

204 I The Career Opportunities You Keep Losing To Imposter Syndrome And How To Finally Stop It With Jaz Marfo
mercredi 25 janvier 2023 • Durée 38:33
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast we have Jaz M, coach for ambitious careers and communities and we are going to be having discussion about imposter syndrome.
The reason why I want to focus on this is to make people aware that Impostor syndrome is not inherently bad. The shame that comes with it is that's bad and that's the actual debilitating part underneath it.
Episode Highlights:
· 1.31: Jaz has been coaching for five years and she is passionate about working with high achievers to lift the limits of our careers to avoid burnout, overwhelmed and underwhelmed and its thing that we try to avoid in our careers.
· 4.36: A report that was done last year by KPMG said that 75% of female executives had experienced imposter syndrome in their career, and that number is higher for women of colour.
· 9.43: If you get the feedback from leadership relationship, then you can improve and if you can improve, it's going to be good for everybody and you are entitled to take feedback because you are in the role.
· 25.27: When syndrome is in the personal life, there are no hobbies, there are no relationships, there are no passions.
· 31.18: Having little sentence endings that are ultimately invitations to action from the people that let them know that I am not sharing for the sake of sharing, and I am part of the active discussion can be grateful.
· 34.20: For a lot of us, certain phrases or certain experiences can really, really tighten our experience of imposter syndrome and when we start to decode that, then that's the beginning of coming along but leaving the shame behind.
What you will learn:
- Imposter syndrome is the experience of not believing you are as competent as others perceive you to be, which essentially means that you are worrying about what you think other people think. It is multi-sensory experience.
- One of the things that we tend to overlook when we talk about imposter syndrome is understanding how much our environment plays into it because many of us, especially an executive level, we are operating in an environment that wasn't necessarily made for us.
- One of the biggest flags that you could be experiencing imposter syndrome is secret over time. It's something that we do at some stage. It does serve us in some moments and in other ways it does.
- Growth mindset is essentially a belief that you can improve by efforts and fix mindset is no matter what my efforts are, it is what it is.

203 | Secrets To Building A Personal Brand As A Corporate Professional To Unlock New Career Opportunities
jeudi 19 janvier 2023 • Durée 23:44
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast, I talk about personal branding. What it looks like to be building a personal brand and then why it can be impactful?
The reason why I want to focus on this is to show you that building of the brand is essentially your way of showing up and sharing with the world what you want to share. Because you show up, because you share, then opportunities can come your way.
Episode Highlights:
· 02.05: I start by explaining personal brand, what does that mean?
· 03.02: I talk a little bit about the defined phase and why it's so important to slow down when you are thinking about the fact that you need to show up more and the fact that you need to build a personal brand, you need to really define what it is.
· 04.12: I am going to talk to you through my journey so I can illustrate how I have gone about building out my personal brands.
· 06.42: I wanted to help other people with their career transitions to figure out what they want to do, to support them with making the transition and so that is what I wanted to be known for.
· 9.15: If you want to be more intentional about your brand, you don't have to have it all figured out straight away. It's about you doing stuff, testing it, seeing what works for you, what you like and then overtime you can refine what it is you are actually doing and what you are putting out there.
· 11.17: I want to share my perspective about careers to actually building a profitable coaching business and becoming a corporate trainer and being invited to speak on stages.
· 14.50: If you decide to build a personal brand about something that you're passionate about. You get to make an impact without waiting for it to come through your employer
· 18.13: In 2019 I did a TEDx talk, and I shared about the key ingredient for your breakthrough. How do you go about getting your career breakthrough?
What you will learn:
- There are a lot of different platforms that people talk about when it comes to building a personal brand, but it's important to take stock and not get overwhelmed.
- One of the biggest pieces around building your personal brand is sharing your perspective.
- Networking is just building relationships. So, once you know what you want to be known for and you start talking about that in whatever format that is for you then you are in a position to start finding other like-minded people who are interested in the same thing.
- When building your own personal brand, you get to show up and you get to do what you want to do in terms of building your brand consistently and then there are people out there that will be impacted and touched by your brand, and you don't even realize it.

202 | The Basics and How To Navigate the Current Corporate Job Market, Even With Economic Uncertainty
jeudi 12 janvier 2023 • Durée 13:34
Happy New Year!!
We are at the beginning of another year. I know we always say things like time is flying by or can't believe its the new year already...but boy is it TRUE.
Today, I want to talk about anticipated workplace trends in 2023.
When you are contemplating making moves in your career, it is important to not do it in vacuum and instead consider the landscape and context in which you are operating.
Here are three to trends to consider as you plan for your career development this year:
- Quiet hiring - Despite the news of large scale layoffs, the market is likely to get more competitive when it comes to engaging top talent. So HR leaders will turn to 'quiet hiring' to support with business needs. They will look to support existing employees with reskilling, or upskilling to meet demands of the business rather than only relying on a new hires to get the job done.
- Non-traditional candidates - Organisations are diversifying their talent pools. They will get more and more comfortable with assessing candidates on their ability to fulfill the role rather than their credentials or proven prior experrience. Great news if you are looking to pivot or leap into something else.
- More focus on Wellbeing - There is more recognition that just because we feel like we have more hour to work (having removed commuting time) it doesn't mean working all of the time is productive. We are designed to rest on a daily weekly seasonal and annual cycles. Our bodies are not supposed to be operating non-stop like machines. As more employers recognise this and encourage employees to embrace rest periods, the better for everyone.
