298 I Leaving Dream Jobs & Redefining Success with Patricia Ortega
07 Nov 2025
00:42:17
🎙️ Episode Overview
In this powerful conversation, Patricia and Janine explore what it really means to grow beyond a prestigious title and step into work that aligns with who you are becoming. Prestige often feels safe—law, tenure, the senior role everyone recognises on LinkedIn, but real growth begins when the title no longer fits the person wearing it.
This episode unpacks why nothing is wasted in your career: every season, every skill, every chapter becomes transferable capital for what’s next.
Together we explore identity beyond job titles, how to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset inside and outside organisations, and why success must be rooted in values rather than status.
If you’ve outgrown a role, feel pulled toward new impact, or are navigating a career chapter that no longer aligns, this conversation will help you reframe your experience, re-anchor your direction, and move with clarity.
What You’ll Learn in This Episode
1. Why redefining success is essential once you’ve “made it.” We discuss how reaching the top of a traditional path can reveal misalignment — and why that discomfort is powerful data pointing toward your next chapter.
2. How to separate identity from job title. You’ll learn how to honour your past work without letting it limit future possibilities, and how to reintroduce yourself by impact rather than labels.
3. The mindset and practices that help you navigate career transitions with confidence. From transferring your toolkit to adopting an entrepreneurial operating system, this episode shows you how to make evidence-based decisions, iterate without self-judgement, and build a career anchored in values.
Action Steps
1. Audit your definition of success. Ask yourself: “Does this measure meaning or just status?” Rewrite your success metrics based on values, impact, and desired rhythms of work.
2. Create your “portable skills” inventory. List the cognitive, strategic, and relational skills you’ve built that are transferable across industries and roles. This becomes your confidence and positioning tool.
3. Separate your ‘what’ from your ‘how.’ Get clear on what you truly want next—impact, income range, type of work—before worrying about the logistics. Treat the “how” as a solvable project once the vision is set.
298 I When A Dream Job No Longer Aligns With Your Career Direction with Patricia Ortega
31 Oct 2025
00:10:39
Episode Overview
In today’s episode, I’m diving into a powerful yet often overlooked question that can make or break your preparation for career-defining conversations — whether it's an interview, a performance review, or a high-stakes pitch.
This episode was inspired by a recent conversation with one of my coaching clients who is navigating the Career Change Maker Process. As we discussed an upcoming chat she had with a recruiter, one simple question shifted everything for her and I believe it can do the same for you.
What you'll learn:
The power and importance of preparing for career advancing conversations in the right way
How to move from reactive to proactive communication
Why this one question works across interviews, reviews, and pitches
If you want to show up fully prepared and leave a lasting impression in your next important conversation, this episode is a must-listen.
Action Step:
Before your next career conversation, ask yourself: What do I want them to know about me, my experience, and my expertise by the end of this conversation? Then prepare with that focus in mind.

208 I How To Use The Career Skills You Already Have To Move Industry And Increase Your Income
23 Feb 2023
00:13:24
In today’s episode I am talking about how to move industry and earn more, without the traditional industry experience.
A lot of people I talk to at the moment are discussing moving industries, so I am really excited to share my insights and tips on this topic with you.
It may seem intimidating entering a new industry and I know a lot of people have reservations, but there are things you can do to avoid having to start at the bottom or take a pay cut.
Why do so many of us question whether an industry change will be possible for us? We see and hear of success stories from people who switched industry all the time, in fact many of my past guests have done just that.
Firstly we need to pay attention to where we get our information from, a recruiter may be less encouraging of you moving industry because it makes their job a little trickier – that doesn’t make it impossible.
We are also seeing a big industry shift in the way experience is viewed – the priority is now on whether a candidate has the ability to excel in a role, not necessarily experience. This is where you need to focus if wanting to switch industry.
Initially you need to identify your transferable skills, and then take it that one step further and focus on the results. By focusing on the results you achieved through that skill set, and demonstrating how these results are similar to the results the hiring company are looking for, it makes it clear as to how you would add value in that role.
Something I also see clients overlook is the value of their perspective – by coming from a different industry you are bringing a whole new perspective and outlook that can be incredibly useful in problem solving.
So what next? 1. Research – immerse yourself in the industry, identify gaps of knowledge and work to fill them 2. Connect the dots – identify the skills, results and perspective you have, and clearly show that they are invaluable in the role
As always, if you want any support with how to position yourself for a new role, just get in touch.
I will also be jumping on LinkedIn live each Wednesday at 12 noon (UK time) for regular “Career Conversations”, so tune in for future streams!
207 | Why Your Current Schedule Leads To Burnout: The #1 Way I Find Peace By Managing Time With Detola Amure
16 Feb 2023
00:33:50
In today’s episode I am talking to Detola Amure about time management and the tools and strategies we can use to stay on top of our workload.
Detola started her career in Management Consulting, and then moved on to become a Business Analyst, working with many industry giants. Then in 2013, Detola launched her own coaching practise “Super Working Mums”, providing leadership and productivity coaching to overwhelmed working mothers to allow them to find purpose and harness their time to manifest their big career goals. Earlier last year, Detola started The Productivity Company, utilising her experience working with individuals to drive productivity, retention and workforce happiness in a corporate space.
On top of this Detola is a mother, activator, podcast host, author and philanthropist – making her the perfect guest to talk about productivity!
We first discuss how Detola approaches managing all these roles to achieve work life harmony, and recognising that things can’t always be perfectly balanced, at times some areas will be less productive than others. Recognising the season that you are going through allows you to prioritise areas accordingly, which means you can stay more focused and enjoy the time you have.
We then talk about how Detola navigated becoming involved in multiple roles, and the importance of knowing and embracing your purpose, and from there accepting and pursuing opportunities that align with this purpose.
“Start with that one thing, do it well, and then as opportunities begin to come to you, don’t say no.”
Detola also shares her experience of trauma, how it affected her productivity and ability to work and how she overcame that to refocus on her true purpose and take back control of her time.
What you will Learn:
1. We as women go through multiple “seasons” in our life – recognising and embracing them can allow us to prioritise our time effectively and enjoy them more.
2. A great starting point to navigating a multifaceted career is to identify your purpose, and pursue and accept opportunities that align with this.
3. How to step away from the vicious cycle of “hustle mode” and put aside time to take rest and let the ideas come to you.
206 | Not Sure Which Career Path Is Right? This Simple Test Helps You Avoid Making The Wrong Move
09 Feb 2023
00:17:23
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast I talk about how to validate your career change ideas and avoid making the wrong move.
I wanted to cover this as I see a lot of people holding themselves back from making a career transition because they are fearful of making a mistake. Today you'll learn practical strategies that you can implement so you can validate the ideas you're considering.
What you will learn:
How to look at your experiences differently - As Nelson Mandela said: "I never lose. I either win or I learn". We learn our biggest lessons when times are challenging.
How to shift your perspective around making a wrong move - You can always change your mind and you can always course correct. You have to 'do' in order for you to move forward though. Taking action is what gets you to the right place.
How to validate your ideas - Gathering the right data is key. If you can form a clear idea backed with evidence and data that proves that it's a good step to take, you'll feel much more confident about making a transition.
Episode Highlights:
02.30: A fear of making the wrong move often comes because we don't want to waste time and we worry that the decision has to be final.
04.59: Making a decision is never final. You can always move, shift, pivot and course correct. There are always opportunities to change.
06.55: Validating your ideas is an important piece in getting unstuck. Without this, changing career can feel risky because what you're doing right now is what you know and feel comfortable with.
8.43: The top two methods for validating your career change ideas taken from my Career Clarity Accelerator: Golden nugget conversations and test driving your ideas.
16:58: Gathering data and making a data driven decision allows you to be strategic in your career move.
17:53: Lack of clarity is often what holds us back.
205 | The Truth About "Career Stability" & Why Playing It Safe Isn't Helping Your Income
01 Feb 2023
00:20:55
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast I talk about three career mistakes that most women make in their mid 30s. I talk about the common patterns that come up in making career-related decisions and what strategies can be made to overcome those.
The reason why I want to focus on this is to help women make better career change strategies and showcase their achievements and results in a better way.
Episode Highlights:
02.03: The first mistake that I see is that many of us don't have or fail to update our career development strategy.
06.07: You can either take the passive approach or you can take the proactive approach. And those that take the proactive approach are typically those who are going to get ahead and that is going to excel.
07.14: The second mistake that I see is that people are not tracking their metrics. Not aware of your metrics. Not aware of the data that links to the results that you get. So you may be showing up and doing work, but you're not tracking the output.
15.02: When it comes to your career development, you get to do so much more to move things forward in a way that's a lot easier than it was then for many people before so embrace that and recognise that we have lots of tools at our disposal that can support us with our career development.
What you will learn:
When you are in your 20s, it's all about you establishing yourself for many people. Because you are in a stage of figuring things out in your 20s, you are very much looking externally for violence. When you get into your 30s and you start doing the work and you Start learning and you start developing, you start growing and you start increasing your level of awareness about what goes on in the world.
You need to update your career development strategy. If you haven't really thought about what it is, you want to be doing with your career in this next phase and you are still on the same journey that you have been on since your 20s. Then there is an opportunity here for you to really think about where I am going and what do I want to be doing.
If you haven't been tracking what you have been doing over the year and over the time, whether it's quarterly or whether it's a year you haven't been tracking. When you sit down in the meeting and you need to be able to say what it is you have been doing, it's really hard to recall that.
204 I The Career Opportunities You Keep Losing To Imposter Syndrome And How To Finally Stop It With Jaz Marfo
25 Jan 2023
00:38:33
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast we have Jaz M, coach for ambitious careers and communities and we are going to be having discussion about imposter syndrome.
The reason why I want to focus on this is to make people aware that Impostor syndrome is not inherently bad. The shame that comes with it is that's bad and that's the actual debilitating part underneath it.
Episode Highlights:
· 1.31: Jaz has been coaching for five years and she is passionate about working with high achievers to lift the limits of our careers to avoid burnout, overwhelmed and underwhelmed and its thing that we try to avoid in our careers.
· 4.36: A report that was done last year by KPMG said that 75% of female executives had experienced imposter syndrome in their career, and that number is higher for women of colour.
· 9.43: If you get the feedback from leadership relationship, then you can improve and if you can improve, it's going to be good for everybody and you are entitled to take feedback because you are in the role.
· 25.27: When syndrome is in the personal life, there are no hobbies, there are no relationships, there are no passions.
· 31.18: Having little sentence endings that are ultimately invitations to action from the people that let them know that I am not sharing for the sake of sharing, and I am part of the active discussion can be grateful.
· 34.20: For a lot of us, certain phrases or certain experiences can really, really tighten our experience of imposter syndrome and when we start to decode that, then that's the beginning of coming along but leaving the shame behind.
What you will learn:
Imposter syndrome is the experience of not believing you are as competent as others perceive you to be, which essentially means that you are worrying about what you think other people think. It is multi-sensory experience.
One of the things that we tend to overlook when we talk about imposter syndrome is understanding how much our environment plays into it because many of us, especially an executive level, we are operating in an environment that wasn't necessarily made for us.
One of the biggest flags that you could be experiencing imposter syndrome is secret over time. It's something that we do at some stage. It does serve us in some moments and in other ways it does.
Growth mindset is essentially a belief that you can improve by efforts and fix mindset is no matter what my efforts are, it is what it is.
203 | Secrets To Building A Personal Brand As A Corporate Professional To Unlock New Career Opportunities
19 Jan 2023
00:23:44
In today's episode of the 'Career Change Maker' podcast, I talk about personal branding. What it looks like to be building a personal brand and then why it can be impactful?
The reason why I want to focus on this is to show you that building of the brand is essentially your way of showing up and sharing with the world what you want to share. Because you show up, because you share, then opportunities can come your way.
Episode Highlights:
· 02.05: I start by explaining personal brand, what does that mean?
· 03.02: I talk a little bit about the defined phase and why it's so important to slow down when you are thinking about the fact that you need to show up more and the fact that you need to build a personal brand, you need to really define what it is.
· 04.12: I am going to talk to you through my journey so I can illustrate how I have gone about building out my personal brands.
· 06.42: I wanted to help other people with their career transitions to figure out what they want to do, to support them with making the transition and so that is what I wanted to be known for.
· 9.15: If you want to be more intentional about your brand, you don't have to have it all figured out straight away. It's about you doing stuff, testing it, seeing what works for you, what you like and then overtime you can refine what it is you are actually doing and what you are putting out there.
· 11.17: I want to share my perspective about careers to actually building a profitable coaching business and becoming a corporate trainer and being invited to speak on stages.
· 14.50: If you decide to build a personal brand about something that you're passionate about. You get to make an impact without waiting for it to come through your employer
· 18.13: In 2019 I did a TEDx talk, and I shared about the key ingredient for your breakthrough. How do you go about getting your career breakthrough?
What you will learn:
There are a lot of different platforms that people talk about when it comes to building a personal brand, but it's important to take stock and not get overwhelmed.
One of the biggest pieces around building your personal brand is sharing your perspective.
Networking is just building relationships. So, once you know what you want to be known for and you start talking about that in whatever format that is for you then you are in a position to start finding other like-minded people who are interested in the same thing.
When building your own personal brand, you get to show up and you get to do what you want to do in terms of building your brand consistently and then there are people out there that will be impacted and touched by your brand, and you don't even realize it.
202 | The Basics and How To Navigate the Current Corporate Job Market, Even With Economic Uncertainty
12 Jan 2023
00:13:34
Happy New Year!!
We are at the beginning of another year. I know we always say things like time is flying by or can't believe its the new year already...but boy is it TRUE.
Today, I want to talk about anticipated workplace trends in 2023.
When you are contemplating making moves in your career, it is important to not do it in vacuum and instead consider the landscape and context in which you are operating.
Here are three to trends to consider as you plan for your career development this year:
Quiet hiring - Despite the news of large scale layoffs, the market is likely to get more competitive when it comes to engaging top talent. So HR leaders will turn to 'quiet hiring' to support with business needs. They will look to support existing employees with reskilling, or upskilling to meet demands of the business rather than only relying on a new hires to get the job done.
Non-traditional candidates - Organisations are diversifying their talent pools. They will get more and more comfortable with assessing candidates on their ability to fulfill the role rather than their credentials or proven prior experrience. Great news if you are looking to pivot or leap into something else.
More focus on Wellbeing - There is more recognition that just because we feel like we have more hour to work (having removed commuting time) it doesn't mean working all of the time is productive. We are designed to rest on a daily weekly seasonal and annual cycles. Our bodies are not supposed to be operating non-stop like machines. As more employers recognise this and encourage employees to embrace rest periods, the better for everyone.

201 | Struggling with year-end stress? 3 Tips to Reclaim Your Clarity as you plan for new Career Opportunities
15 Dec 2022
00:18:27
It's the end of the year and a time when many people start thinking about and planning for the new year.
Planning and new year's resolutions are great... but are often not enough to actually lead to change. Too often people try and make huge dramatic shifts without setting themselves up for success.
What You Will Learn:
Audit
Goal or Intention Setting
Setting Yourself Up For Success
Audit - We move through life so quickly, I literally feel like the year has gone by in a flash. When you are focused on doing and achieving, it is so easy to lose track of all that has happened.
Now is the perfect time to be doing an audit around your life and your career. What went well this year? What didn't go well this year and why? When you have identified those, you can move onto step number 2.
Don't skip this step, when I did my audit, I realised that we had lots of wins on the scoreboard that I hadn't remembered. Clients served, contracts won, a live event, podcast growth etc.
Goal or Intention Setting - What do you want to achieve or create in the next year? You can set those high-level goals but be mindful to make them realistic. Taking a holistic approach is a good idea, so that it is not all about work but other wellness goals too. Health, fitness, sleep... because if you are not taking care of those things, it's harder to achieve in the other areas.
Setting Yourself Up For Success - Clarify the commitment, resources and support required to make the goals you set in number 2 a reality. If one of your goals is to work out a few times a week, what are you going to put in place to make that happen? Will you hire a personal trainer or get a gym buddy?
If your goal is to get promoted by the end of Q1, will you be hiring a coach or finding a mentor to support you on your growth trajectory? The reason many people set new year's resolutions that fail before the end of February is that they don't focus enough on the day-to-day tasks that need to be done for the bigger goal to actually be met.
If you want help with this process - book a Career UpLevel Intensive. We will work together to map out your career advancement plan for 2023. You tell me what you want to achieve and I will help you come up with a bespoke strategy that is aligned to you and your preferences.
Beyond the yearly plan start thinking about your quarterly goals. What do you want to achieve in Q1 of the year?
200 I What Running A Podcast For 200 Episodes Taught Me About Career Opportunities Most Women Miss
07 Dec 2022
00:17:48
In today's episode, I'm talking about the 5 career advancing lessons that I've learned from running this podcast and producing 200 episodes.
Here are 5 lessons learned that are relevant to you as it relates to your career development:
Momentum comes from taking consistent action
What you communicate is not always the same as what is received by your audience
You never know who is watching
Your perspective matters
There are so many other people who are in your shoes
Momentum comes from taking consistent action - When I first started the podcast, I would get maybe 10 or 20 downloads a week, and then maybe 50 or 100 downloads a week... and now we are going into having thousands of downloads in a week, and I didn't think that was possible when we were only getting a few downloads. The momentum came with just keeping going and just showing up time and time again. When it comes to your career, I want you to remember that, sometimes you can be taking action and may not be seeing the results, recognition, growth or development. But keep showing up.
What you communicate is not always the same as what is received - This is the 3rd iteration of the podcast. When we first started, I was too focused on what I wanted to call the show rather than a name that people would be able to find. It wasn't until we rebranded to the podcast to the "Career Change Maker Podcast", based on feedback that I was getting from clients, that people started to find the show easily. When you are positioning yourself for opportunities make sure you communicate in a way that helps the hiring manager see you as an ideal candidate, rather than focus on what you want to focus on.
You never know who is watching - I'm sitting here behind a microphone and I can see how many people are listening but I don't know WHO is listening. What is beautiful for me and what I absolutely love is when I receive messages from people on LinkedIn
You might not recognise that the work you're doing IS being recognised, so continue to show up because you never know who's listening, who's watching and where opportunities might come in the future.
Your perspective matters - Even if there are lots of people applying for the job that you want to go for, recognise that there's only one YOU and your perspective and your approach to things absolutely matters. Recognise you have a unique perspective, and a unique blend of experience, to bring to the table. Own that.
There are so many other people who are in your shoes - We have people from different parts of the world, from different industries, from different backgrounds and yet similar challenges come up time and time again for them. You are not the only one.
199 I Your Hard Work Means Nothing If You Cannot Measure It: The Power Of Metrics In Your Career
01 Dec 2022
00:16:54
In today's episode I am talking about why metrics matter in your career.
I have noticed amongst people who seem to excel in terms of their development and advancement vs those that just do okay is that those that excel pay attention to metrics.
Metrics are something that's really simple but not necessary something that you pay attention to when life gets busy and work gets hectic.
When you pay attention to your progress it's easier for you to recognise your growth. Think about what you should be measuring.
The other side of metrics is where you will find results. Result matter to you, results matter to your organisation. So often when I work with people around optimising their CV or positioning themselves for new opportunities internally and externally, the results piece is missing. Understanding the results in terms of what you individually did, translates into the larger results for the organisation.
What you will learn:
Tracking your progress: If you're not tracking what it is you're doing, it is really difficult to say whether or not you're doing it well. Keeping track of your progress also allows you see whether you have stayed on the right track or whether you have deviated.
Receiving feedback: Asking for feedback when you feel that you are ready, so you get a clear understanding of your process and what is expected from you. Don't necessary have to wait for the annual review, ask for more regular check-in points.
Mental and physical health: Making sure your mental health and physical health is protected, so that you can keep driving your goals forward. Be sure to get enough sleep, exercise and eat well.

198 | Why Some Corporate Women Rise Faster (And What They Do Differently in Their Careers)
24 Nov 2022
00:16:53
In today's episode I will be talking about why you should frequently audit your own performance in the context of the work place.
There are so many occasions when I speak to clients that I'm working with who are ready to step up in their careers, who are ready to articulate the value they bring to an organisation.
When we start looking for the evidence and looking for the examples of the work they've completed, the impact they have already made, they struggle to bring everything together.
Often times we want and rely on a structure that's put in place within an organisation. i.e. the annual review.
That is not often enough - we can't just rely on the organisation or the job search process to make us do the work that we should be doing throughout our journeys... the work that we should be doing on a consistent basis.
If you're being intentional about the goals you are setting around your career development, then you're able to be intentional about tracking the results that you're getting. If you are not taking time to decided what it is you're trying to achieve, it's difficult to track it and if you're not tracking it, it's difficult to talk about it... and if you're not talking about it, it's difficult to get recognised for it.
What you will learn:
How to audit every 90 days: By doing an audit every quarter, you are taking time to plan ahead and decide what is it that you want to achieve in the next quarter. The 3 things you need to focus on when doing your audit are: what are your personal goals? What are the company's goals? How do your goals align with the company's goals? When you understand what you want to do and your goals align with the company, it's so much easier for you to draw out the value that you bring.
Identifying your strengths: Lean into what you're good at and how you do things best. You're likely to get to where you want to get to quicker doing this, rather than trying to do something in a pre-prescribed way that doesn't align.
Importance of auditing: When you are in your day-to-day role, it's easy to lose track of the goals you have set. Setting your goals and doing an audit for the next quarter is helping you keep on track.
197 I Your Bad Corporate Job Experience Is Still Running Your Career And Here Is How To Move Past It
17 Nov 2022
00:19:43
In today's episode, I will be talking about moving past negative work experiences. This is something that has come up a few times in coaching sessions lately, so I have a feeling it will resonate with quite a few of you.
I was working with one particular client who was ready to step up to a more senior position. We were exploring what it is that she wanted to do, where she wanted to go and how she would need to position herself.
Once we knew the answers to these, I noticed there was a bit of resistance from her in taking the steps to make it happen.
My client's resistance was coming from her negative experiences with her previous employer. We had to really peel back all the layers and identify the positive lessons learned through the negative experience.
Once she identified the lessons, we were then able to make changes that aligned better to what she wanted, so she wouldn't have to come across the same negative experience again in a different environment.
What you will learn:
Addressing negative experiences- If you don't address the way a negative experience has impacted you, you are likely to bring that into a new role where you have the opportunity to do things differently.
Recognising the lessons- Instead of taking the negative experience with you, look at it as a lesson. You now have a new opportunity to do things differently in a new environment.

196 | Why Waiting Won’t Help You Find Your Passion After 17 Career Changes | Elena Agaragimova
09 Nov 2022
00:32:23
In today's episode I have a very interesting interview with my guest, Elena, about her inspiring career change transition.
Elena started her career in higher education, which she found to be slow-paced, so she then shifted to corporate learning, working with the younger generation.
In 2019, Elena explains while she was based in Dubai she co-founded a company call Bessern with a business partner. Bessern focuses on performance well-being in organisations. She was also involved in various other projects, such as building up talent pipelines for small companies.
Elena shares that in the beginning of her career transition, she didn't really have a strategy, "Having an idea about what you want to do is a starting point, it doesn't have to be all mapped out, but consider what you like, what you don't like and what things give you energy."
Elena talks about being mindful of not making an 'emotional' decision. We often want to make a change when we're in a state of emotional burnout but this isn't the best place to be making a decision from. Be self-aware and honest with yourself, ask yourself "what am I running away from and what I am running towards?"
Elena has always had a side hustle and over the years corporate learning and development has been one of them. "I have always been experimenting, I always had a 9-5, but I was creating opportunities for myself, by doing random projects and paid or unpaid work".
Towards the end of 2019 she started to get a lot of clients of her own, which meant she would have to take time off work and use her vacation time to do sessions. She started thinking maybe this was the time to do this full time, as she was feeling overwhelmed with her work.
What you will learn:
Identifying roles you are interested in: If you have an idea you are interested in, be open to it. Experiment with it, find platforms and networks that can support your journey.
The importance of networking: Source opportunities, either paid or voluntary, to build confidence in areas which you think your confidence or experience is lacking.
Creating opportunities for yourself: Experiment with your idea, try different ways to achieve your goal. Fully putting yourself out there increases your chance of opportunities.

195 I Most Women Stop Right Before Their Career Breakthrough. Here Is How To Keep Going
02 Nov 2022
00:14:31
In today's episode I am talking about when you feel resistance to change, keep going.
When you are contemplating a career move or your in the process of figuring it out, it is likely that you are going to experience resistance. Reistance can come in different forms, internal and external. Im going to talk about both forms but more focus on the internal resistance.
My client I'm talking about has been making incredible progress inside the program, she identified what she doesn't want to do, she clarified some options she wants to pursuit.
What my client is feeling right now is normal. If you are in your comfort zone, if you have been in your role to a lot of years, you are comfortable in your role, your comfortable doing your job how you have been doing it for so many years, it's what you know.
Now when you decide to step outside of your comfort zone, your subconscious mind is like "what are we doing. why are we doing this?" This is where the resistance comes in but you need to be able to keep going, it doesn't mean you should give up, if you feel the resistance it means you are stepping out of your comfort zone, you are opening up for different experiences.
Resistance is a good thing it shows your taking action and doing the uncomfortable things that are required in order for you to move from A-B.
Its very important to ask yourself "why am embarking on this journey, what is my motivation" when you start to doubt yourself, you can always go back to your "why" and get re-fuelled to continue on your journey.
What you will learn:
The power of resistance - When you have decided that you want to make a career move and you embark on your journey, it is normal for you to feel some resistance. You are coming out of your comfort zone, so the experience will inevitably feel a little challenging. But never give up - it is definitely possible for YOU.
Using external factors - We have all heard that saying: "you have to be in it to win it" and this definitely applies when you want to make that career change. You will have to be consistent and prepared to put yourself fully out there. Just sending one or two CVs to companies once every week or applying for the odd job here and there is not going to give you the result you are looking for.
Identify the "why" of your journey - Take some time to reflect and ask yourself: "why do I want to make a career move and what is the motivation?" Getting clarity around what that is, is going to help with your transition when the resistance starts setting in.

194 I Why Career Clarity Should Come Before Career Coaching Support
26 Oct 2022
00:17:42
In today's episode I am talking about how to know what type of career coaching support would be best for you.
I speak to a lot of people who are feeling stuck in their role or career. They want to make a move but aren't sure how to make it happen. Sometimes they're looking into hiring someone to update their CV or LinkedIn profile or sometimes they're looking at job boards. These aren't the places to start!
It's important you follow the correct process. If you don't, somewhere along your journey, you will find yourself feeling confused. First, you need to get the clarity around what you want to achieve, then you get the support with the transition.
A lot of people start with getting one-to-one support from a coach, which is likely to last 3, 6, or 8 months. You will work with your coach and they can help you to focus on what you want to focus on, using strategies and helping you to overcome the mindset blocks.
Others may start with group coaching, and this is what I have seen to be the most valuable. When you are surrounded by people who have the same mindset, who are on a similar journey to you, you feel supported in a different way.
The coaching is supporting you and guiding you through, but you also get to see other people going through the process and this is what is so powerful - it shifts your belief around what is possible and re-enforces your belief around what is possible when you see it happening for others too.
What you will learn:
The power of community - When you're in a community, in times of doubting yourself you can borrow someone's belief. You can see first-hand their journey, share the same experience and support each other.
How to attract the role you want - Using the tools you already have, how you can strategically network, tap into the hidden job market and use your personal branding so you can position yourself to attract the type of opportunities you want
The benefits of group coaching - This is particularly important when you have been in your role for several years. The chances are your friends and colleagues are in the same industry and so when you say you want to make a career move, their reaction is not what you're looking for. Being a part of group coaching means you can interact with people who understand where you are coming from, possibly in the same situation you're in. The support is priceless.

193 I Why High Achievers Struggle to Leave Careers They No Longer Enjoy
19 Oct 2022
00:17:50
In today's episode I am talking about the 3 reasons you are convincing yourself you need to stay in a role you no longer enjoy.
I get a lot of people asking me questions like: 'How did you make the transition from a Lawyer to a career coach?', and 'What made you take the big leap?'
I have asked myself why it took me so long to make the move and what was my thought process. After reflecting, I came up with 3 reasons why I was delaying the career move that I knew I wanted to make, and in this podcast episode, I share them with you.
What you will learn:
How doubting whether it's possible to make a career move can hold you back - I know you have invested so much time into your career and getting to where you are today, so it makes sense that you have doubts whether you can make the transition, and still have the salary that you require. You may feel that you might have to take a pay cut or make a complete change in industry and you're concerned that you lack the skills. But when you gather data that helps you to get a better vision of the possibilities that are out there for you, you will feel confident and inspired to take the action required.
How to deal with confusion around the career transition you want to make - When you have been in your industry for years, you know how the organisation works. you know what you need to do to progress within that organisation. But when you're making a career move, it's something new, out of your comfort zone, so of course the confusion is going to creep in! Should you make a shift, leap or pivot? I'm going to help you decide what opportunities there are to explore.
Why guilt can stop you in your tracks - Guilt appears when you have committed a lot of time and effort working hard and making progress in an organisation. You might be unhappy, and you have decided you want a career change, but feel guilty because of all the time and effort you have invested into your role. I'm going to help you release this feeling of guilt so that you feel freedom to move into a new role that aligns with you and your goals.
192 I The Salary Growth Strategy Most Professionals Miss During Career Change With Scott Barlow
12 Oct 2022
00:46:17
In today’s episode, I am talking how to change career and get a six-figure salary increase in the process with my guest Scott Barlow.
We discuss Scott's very impactful career journey. After taking a role that seemed perfect to everyone else but was far from perfect from him, Scott spent 10 years researching what it takes to build fulfilling careers. Scott shares those insights through his podcast, coaching programs and more recently through his "Happen To Your Career" book.
What You Will Learn:
1. Create the ideal career profile - When you identify what you want and what you don't want in your career, you can then align those desires with what you value. An aligned career will lead to an increased level of output.
2. Changing career and increase your salary - It is possible to make a career change and keep the same salary. How you enter the career change is very important. Disregard any organisations that are not offering you what you want. Once you found an organisation you want to work for, get to a situation where the organisation loves you or can't imagine not having you on the team. Then, you are in a good place to start your negotiation.
3. Effectively negotiate - Gather information, build relationships and partner with them so that you can come up with a solution that is a win/win for both sides.
191 I Your Career Change Will Not Last If You Skip These Identity Shifts First
06 Oct 2022
00:26:07
In today’s episode I am diving into the identity shifts that must happen if you want to make a career change.
I've had so many conversations with clients who say they want to make a career change but they don't have the relevant credentials, discredit the experience that they already have and talk themselves out of opportunities before they do any divining to really assess if they could be a good candidate.
One of my clients kept herself with a box, she couldn't see herself doing anything different, despite the fact that she had the credentials, the experience and met all the criteria. She didn't take on that leadership identity initially. Once she did the work and started to look at things differently and separated who she is from what she does, new opportunities started coming her way.
What you will learn:
1. The importance of identity shifts - when you can separate who you are from what you do it is easier to be open to new possibilities
2. Leverage your varied expertise - The experience that you have gained elsewhere can be relevant and welcomed in the new are that you want to move into. What you already have can give you an edge and help you to stand out.
3. The power of selling your value - Once you recognise the objective of the organisation and the purpose of the role you're less likely to consider whether you are "good enough?" and more likely to focus on whether you have a track record of figuring things out. Organisations are more concerned with the value that you bring, than you probably realise.

190 I The Career Change Journey Is Messy And That Is Completely Normal With Anjuli Obaro
29 Sep 2022
00:46:09
In today’s episode I interview Anjuli Obaro about her career change journey to landing an ideal role and securing a pay rise at the same time.
What you’ll learn:
The importance of getting clear on your values
Staying committed to the goal even When life happens
How to reposition your experience to attract different opportunities
Getting clear of your values- Anjuli took the time to get clear on her values early in the career change process which made it easier for her to identify opportunities that were ideal for her.
Staying committed to your goals - Anjuli made her commitment to change her career and leaving her 10 year teaching career in 2020. Despite her plans to transition promptly life happened! She was forced to press pause on her plans but was committed to make her change regardless of how long it would take. Two years on and she was able to make a transition that allows her to live the flexible life style that she desires as a mother of two. She made honoured her commitment and kept taking action (even if small at times) to ensure she achieved her goal. Sometimes you need to slow down, but know that if you stay focused you will achieve your goals.
Reposition your experience to attract different opportunities- Initially Anjuli had no idea how her teacher experience would translate in other settings or industries. She took the time to learn about different opportunities through research and networking. When she identified two roles that she was interested in different industries, she had to position her experience differently for both roles. Through making targeted applications which focused on the needs of the role and goals for the organisations she landed two compelling roles and had the opportunity to choose. If you are on a career journey, be inspired and know that your ideal role is out there waiting for you!
189 I Stop Waiting For Permission And Start Building A Career That Leaves A Legacy
14 Sep 2022
00:18:12
In this episode I am reflecting on the Queen and the impact she has made and the legacy she has left behind. I think this is very relevant in terms of our individual journeys - there's so many lessons that we can learn from her life and how she proactively worked to leave an incredible legacy.
What are you committed to? The Queen was committed to her role and duties for 70 years. She was ill but up until 2 days before she passed, she was still committed to her duties. It made me ask the question: what I am committed to? I'm going ask you the same: What are you committed to when it comes to your career?
Through the work that I do with women from around the world, in different industries, and from the feedback I get from Podcast listeners, I see these women wanting to get somewhere or wanting to make some kind of move, but they are not necessarily taking action. And the reasons are " I don't have enough time", "I don't know what I want to do" or " I don't know how to position myself".
My question is: is that the real reason? Because often there's a surface reason but when you pull back the layers, there's another reason that's ultimately holding you back.
People often say, "I don't have time to dedicate to my career development", or "I don't have time to figure out what is it I want to do next". But then they spend lots of time on social media. When we consider the average person spends 90, 000 hours at work in their lifetime, I think figuring out what you should be doing and where you should be and how you can be best doing the role should be a priority.
If time is an issue, my question is: can you do an audit on your time to really see where you are spending your time and are you spending your time in the right way?
Let's make sure the time we have is time well spent. Fast forward and say, "when I'm in my old age what do I want to be able to look back and say what I have achieved". It can help to focus on what you should be doing NOW so that you build a career that you can look back and be proud of.
What you will learn:
How to manage your time effectively to achieve your goals
How to be proactive in working towards your career goals
How to gather data to help support your decision making and gain awareness of where you need to be investing your time.
How to manage your time effectively to achieve your goals - learn to prioritising your time now will make it easier to achieve your goals in the future. The days turn into weeks, the weeks turn into months and the months turns into years.
How to be proactive - Start creating opportunities for the roles or careers you want. Liaise with people who already have the experience which you might lack. Be strategic by surrounding yourself with people who could help you get to where you want to be.
Gathering data - Doing an audit based on where you are and where you want to be is a great way to gather data that can really benefit you by creating awareness on what is is you should be focusing on and where you should be investing your time and efforts.

03 Aug 2022
00:30:01
In today’s episode, I am talking about the power of leveraging your strengths with guest expert Trudy Bateman, the Director of Strengths Profile.
Strengths profile is the tool that can help you understand how you can leverage your strengths to have optimal performance in the workplace.
What you will learn:
Preparing For Success- Success is about what we truly are motivated to enjoy, so we measure your energy, your strengths, and how you use it. If you're not using it, then we can help you or you can help yourself to start to use this a bit more. So performance is energy, energy is the magic, energy is life and it is the life force. This is where you will make a difference in your career.
Embracing Your Strengths - If everyone in the team knows what their strengths are then it's so much easier to make sure that you've got the right people doing the right roles and bringing the right energy and motivation to the work.
Understanding Your Uniqueness- It's the uniqueness that you need to be thinking about when you're transitioning at any point in your career.
Episode Highlights
· 01:45 - If you know, understand and can leverage your strengths in the work that you do, your level of fulfilment is going to go up as is the level of impact that you're able to make.
· 16:50 - Your uniqueness in terms of careers is fundamentally critical as to how you sell yourself, how you talk about yourself, and also how you decide on the right kind of career.
· 23:10 - If we can push and stretch ourselves in the areas of our strengths by trying those new careers, and pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone in the areas of our strengths, then we’re going to have much more confidence and success.

187 I The Mindset Shift To Move Forward In Your Career Now
27 Jul 2022
00:13:16
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am diving into why it is important to stop waiting for the right time to make a career move, and instead create it.
Episode Highlights
· 03:50 – In case you're not yet at the place of your choice then it means you're tolerating your current position while knowing that you don't want to be tolerating it.
· 06:00 – All of us have some basic needs, so when you don't have those things fulfilled then it is really hard for you to consider anything else.
· 08:00 – One of my clients took the opportunity and time to join my program and work through what she wanted in her career. She landed a new role within four weeks of being made redundant and the role was fully aligned with her values. Had she not started the process, likely that she would have just jumped into a very similar role once she took voluntary redundancy.
· 10:25 - There's a lot of introspection, research, and positioning that needs to happen for you to attract the right type of role. So in my program, I take people through the data method, which helps them to define exactly what they want to do.
· 12:15 - Take control of the things that you have control over, and if you know that you're not happy in your career, then let’s do something about it. It makes me so happy when I hear that my clients have got promoted, I feel so glad that I made this transition.
What you will learn:
I often hear from people who are not happy in their current role, who know that they feel undervalued in their role and that they are just going to wait until they feel more confident. However the waiting period is often ongoing and not productive.
If you're in a position where you know that you're not happy, why wait until there is a circumstance where you have to figure out the next move, and you're not going to have the headspace to think through what you want to do. So instead of saying, “I'm going to wait until later”, ask yourself, “What am I waiting for?” It makes more sense for you to pay attention to this now rather than putting it off till later.
If you have a valid reason for wanting to make a move, then it is important to pay attention to that right now. The reality is if you want to move into something new then it's not just about you jumping to another same role with another company, it's about you figuring out what you want to do in the long term and that takes time. There's a whole process that has to have for you to have clarity around what you want to do.
186 I Stop Surviving Remote Work And Start Thriving In It. What Career Women Need To Know with Sarah Fern
20 Jul 2022
00:36:43
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking with Sarah Fern about thriving in a remote working environment and how you can make it work in a remote working environment. I think there’s no better person than Sarah for me to speak to and have a discussion around making remote working successful.
The reason I am having a conversation with Sarah about remote working is that she's the Head of people at Velocity Global where they help people to work from anywhere. So, I want to dive in and have a very candid conversation about how it all works.
Episode Highlights
· 09:15 – Our policy says if you get your job done, that's your duty. You sign up to do your job and where you do that from and when you do that, that's in your control.
· 11:15 - When we say ‘Be Bold’ (One of our Company Values), it's especially important in this remote world because you don't always have someone next to you that you can check in with your co-worker or your team may not be around when you have a specific question and that forces you to make informed decisions.
· 33:28 - Empower yourself, don't hold back. There are a lot of spaces in the world where you're needed and your fire is needed and we need to unleash ourselves quite frankly.
What you will learn:.
The importance of culture - In our remote world, if we don't foster that healthy culture, if we don't foster and celebrate those behaviours and values, we wouldn't be where we are today so people-first approach that human approach to celebrating people for who they are. We have all religions and people of the world represented and we have to work like that. So, anyone who falls out of line has a very short career with us.
Navigating working remotely - Working anywhere is probably not for everyone. If this is your first job, this is quite a task because you have to become an amazing network person. It can be a lonely journey and so, we try and have a lot of interactions, we have a buddy system, the new starters, we have team members in our team who look after our new starters. We need to be really good at sharing information and we have recently introduced a Virtual HQ. It is a platform where we share, communicate, and share recordings, pictures, or any updates.
Aligning Your Values - Find a workplace that shares your values, but that doesn't always exist. So, if it doesn't exist, if you can't find it, find it within yourself, don't create it. Unleash that passion and go find your tribe who are already doing it or doing it differently. Learn from them too, because we have so many opportunities, and we haven't even started properly.

185 I The Career Opportunities You Will Miss If You Do Not Grow Into Your New Role The Right Way
13 Jul 2022
00:20:45
In today's episode of the career change maker podcast. I am taking about growing into your new role after a career change.
In April this year I celebrated being in business full-time for a whole entire year. If you've been listening to this podcast for a while you know that I quit my career of ten years to go full-time inside of my coaching business. It has been amazing, incredible roller coaster, emotional, journey so far.
I've been taking time to reflect on the past year and the lessons learned and I thought it would be good to share because this is the part of the career change journey that not many people speak about.
I'll be sharing the three lessons that I have learned since my big career change:
You won't always know what to do but you can figure it out
Growth isn't always linear
Getting into community is vital to your wellbeing and success
I am excited about this new season and all that is to come, so watch this space.
I would love to connect with you and get to know where you are in your career journey.
I am thinking about hosting a virtual podcast meet up. Would you be interested in attending. Send me an email to janine@careerchangemakers.com with the subject title "Podcast Meet Up". If I receive enough email responses, I will arrange the meet up.

184 I Stop Waiting For The Perfect Moment And Start Progressing Towards The Career Change You Keep Putting Off
21 Jun 2022
00:13:28
In today’s episode, I am talking about why you won’t let yourself progress towards a career change.
The reason I want to talk about this topic here is that sometimes people want to make a career change but they find themselves spinning their wheels and not making any progress.
What you will learn:
When it comes to making a career move, it may feel difficult to move towards what you're saying and what you want. But if you are not taking any action towards making a difference, then it may be that you're not thinking about the right things. It's easy to say that I need to make a career change and I'm going to go jump on job boards and see what's out there. But the reality is doing that isn't going to help you to move forward because when you look out onto the board, you may not see any opportunities that take all the boxes for you.
You have to try a different approach if you feel you're going back and forth and not getting the right outcomes. I want to encourage you to start thinking about things differently and say, that if you were to explore alternative options then think beyond your current profile. Then we actually start exploring what that would actually look like.
The job market is challenging and competitive right now. But there are people out there who are landing roles in ideal positions for them. My clients are doing it, but there are people who are willing to push past their fear of shifting to a new role/ industry. You might be seeing hundreds of hundreds of people applying for particular roles and when you see that there's so much competition out there, you start feeling that it's not possible for you to make a move right now. But there are other ways to do things, there are people that are leveraging their network, and the hidden job market so that they can learn, which is a little difficult.
Uncomfortableness is for a season and it allows you and prepares you for what is to come and the role that you'll be able to land at either an elevated position or you might be negotiating a higher salary or you might just feel like you have a much better lifestyle because the role is more aligned to you as a person. All of that is available, but you have to go through a period of discomfort in order for you to do that.
Making the decision and recognising that when you make a decision that doesn't mean I have to figure it out right now. It's just that you're making a decision, and you're committing to the process of figuring it out. It gets your wheels turning and your brain working in different ways.
183 I How to Stop Letting Assumptions Block Your Career Growth
08 Jun 2022
00:11:04
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about these assumptions that are holding you back from career change success.
The reason I want to talk about this topic here is that this is something that happens to a lot of people in terms of their thought processes. If you're someone who's been thinking about a career change, you've been stuck, and are not quite sure what steps to take then this episode is going to be useful for you when it comes to a career change.
Episode Highlights
· 01:40 - When you've been in your role for a long time in a particular industry it can feel really overwhelming and difficult to pin down what the alternatives should look like.
· 04:25 - I want you to challenge yourself around the assumptions that you're making about what is possible for you because if you are constantly making assumptions about your success then you're not giving yourself enough time to see the different options that you're considering.
· 06:00 - Before we talk about the strategy, I really pay attention to what assumptions are made about, what is possible for me next in my career, are these assumptions based on fact, or are these assumptions just coming up based on my thoughts.
· 08:25 - I created the ‘Career Change Maker’ program because I recognize that too many amazingly talented women are missing important direction and strategy for their career development and advancement.
What you will learn:
As you are considering what it is that you want to do, it could even be for you to go for a promotion, it doesn't necessarily have to be you moving away to do something different, but considering the different things you're contemplating really pay attention to the thoughts that are coming up for you. This is because if you are discounting that opportunity as you don't feel like you are good enough, it might be more about assumptions that you're making than it is about real facts.
It's really important for us to pay attention to our thoughts. Oftentimes people say that they need to know what to do like updating their LinkedIn or Resume, etc. All of that is good and relevant but if you don't pay attention to the thoughts that you have in your mind, and the assumptions that you are making around what is possible, the strategy would be irrelevant.
Identifying what you want to do involves two things ‘What’ and ‘How’. Once we determine what you want to do, then we can look at the strategy but don't allow not knowing what the strategy looks like to stop you from determining that this is the path you want to take. Then you can move to the how and while you're in the what phase allow yourself to fully explore. Don't hold yourself back because you assume it's not going to be possible.
182 I How Misalignment Is Blocking Your Career Growth and Income Potential
02 Jun 2022
00:09:55
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how lack of alignment is costing you thousands every single year. I see that people go around saying that they want to change but they're not making any moves.
People have the desire to make a career move but there's resistance so either people know what they need to do, but they're not taking the action, or they don't know what they need to do, but they're not getting the support.
Episode Highlights
· 02:30 - What I see as a pattern time and time again, is that people say they want to make a move in their careers but then when it comes to actually taking action there is resistance there.
· 04:15 - When there is a lack of alignment in your career, and when you are feeling frustrated, those feelings have to be channelled somewhere. This is when the people who are close to you, are the ones who experience those emotions.
· 05:50 – Many times when I finished working with my clients inside of my program, and we wrap up and they're able to really transform their work-life, they come to me and say “Thank you for your support, and my husband also says thanks.”
· 07:30 - I want us to be thinking that when we are deciding and making a decision not to take any action and not to do things differently. Know that it not only affects you but it affects those around you. It doesn't just affect you because of the emotions that you're feeling they have to go somewhere.
· 09:50 - It's important to think about where is it that you want to be because people say that they want to make a move, but they're not taking any action. When you're not taking any action then you're not going to get to where it is you could get to.
What you will learn:
What often happens is the people that you love, the people who are close to you, those are the people that experience the real emotions. So the outside world, the work world, they get the polished version, and then the people who are close to you get the real version. So what that looks like is getting irritated with your children. It looks like not having much patience with family members who will have a conversation with you.
The other aspect of being in a place where there's no alignment between who you are and how you want to show up in the work that you do is that it's not going to be possible for you to truly get to the place where your earning potential is fulfilled when you're not in the right role. All of the irritation and frustration that you're experiencing, all of that takes your energy and capacity.
It is important to recognize the opportunity costs for the decisions that you're making or the decisions you're not making when it comes to your career progression and your career advancement. If you've been saying the same thing time and time again for the last few months or years, but yet you're still in the same position then the question is what is holding you back from moving forward, and then when you identify what that is, how can you be approaching it.
181 I How This Lawyer Created Better Career Opportunities Without Starting Over
23 May 2022
00:14:31
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how this lawyer pivoted into an unconventional legal role that is perfect for her. I wanted to share with you a little story to give you an example of a lawyer who was able to pivot into an unconventional role and how she made that possible.
The reason I am talking about this example is that this particular lawyer went through one of my programs and oftentimes we hear that things are possible but then if we don't see an example of it, it's hard to truly believe it. So, when you see an example from someone who's in a similar space to you then it is easy to believe.
Episode Highlights
· 03:20 - I want to share with you the three things that my client had to pay attention to that allowed her to identify and then move into different types of roles.
· 05:55 - There are a number of learned behaviours that we develop in our careers and those learned behaviours serve us well because they allow us to operate in the environment that we've been put in, and they allow us to perform.
· 07:40 - The second thing that she did was to address the beliefs around what good would look like. So in order to do that she had to identify what would be good without putting the filters on.
· 09:20 – My client got to the place where she was aware of who she was, and was aware of the type of role that would be good for her.
· 10:50 – Since she knew that this was an ideal opportunity for her, so rather than taking the approach that she used to take to opportunities, it was more yes, and so she went for it.
What you will learn:
This client of mine had been in her career, she started off in private practice, she worked hard to get to where she was, and she had done some testing. So she had taken some different roles, and kind of created a portfolio career for herself but was still feeling like something was missing. She was thinking about moving into different industries, wanted to do something that was more meaningful, and was using her skill set completely. So when she came into the program, she was a bit skeptical as to whether or not it was going to be possible for her to figure out what else she might do.
So we learn how to show up, we learn how to speak, we learn what to say, we learn how to navigate our way through certain environments, but are those things that you've learned align with who you actually are as a person, and how you would typically show up if those things were not required for you. So it's important to understand your true self, not just the self that shows up at work, and does what you're supposed to be doing because you're paid to do it, but the self that you are outside of work.
The third phase is to expand your understanding and knowledge about what is available. Oftentimes, we have our blinkers on and don't always take the time to look outside of that to consider the current landscape that we're in and how the industry is changing and how new opportunities are being developed all of the time because of innovation and change.
180 I The Career Change Stories That Will Make You Rethink What’s Possible
19 May 2022
00:15:01
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about how other lawyers are getting career clarity and making life-changing transitions.
The reason I want to talk about the big career transitions that the lawyers are getting is that you can go from one role to another or one industry to another, you can absolutely do it. You can lean into your transferable skills it is totally possible.
Episode Highlights
· 03:50 - Rather than having to rely on just the traditional methods of going on job boards or speaking to recruiters, we're helping you to take a more proactive approach to make the type of move that you want to make.
· 05:40 - The coaching is there to help you to overcome the mindset hurdles that are going to come up. It will help you to understand what you're learning, and to feel rooted in the decision that you made to go on this career change journey.
· 10:00 – One of my clients, Jen, who is a lawyer, was on maternity leave, she wanted to leave law completely and thought to make a career move. During the program, she realized that she didn't want to leave law completely, but needed to change her environment, and change the type of clients that she was working with.
· 12:00 - Liz came into the program, and she was at a place where she had her legal career for over 10 years. Then she decided that she wanted to do things slightly differently. Once she went through the program, she was able to identify what her strengths were.
What you will learn:
I have developed this career transition process, through my coaching experience, and through guiding lots of clients via a process. The program is broken up into four phases. It is designed to be very much a hands-on program one where you have to come in, you have to do the work to get the results. They start off with the define phase, alignment phase, and finally attract the right opportunities phase. So, we have the program broken down as the community, the coaching, and the curriculum.
In my program, they have a community of like-minded people who are at the same phase as you, who are also not sure that this is what they want to do, or who are unsure about what else they will do. So you're able to connect with other people going through the same process and it can really support you. By the end of the program, people often end up as friends and as colleagues and are able to refer each other for opportunities.
I shared a few snippets and feedback from some of my clients who went through the program as it's always good to hear the insights from people who have been through it and to share a little bit more. So if you want to see more, then let me know, reach out to me and I will direct you to some more case study interviews with people from different backgrounds so you can see whether or not it sounds like it's a good fit for you.
179 I The Career Clarity You Need to See What’s Already Possible for You
13 May 2022
00:16:09
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am talking about why your dream career is a lot closer than you think. I talk about finding an ideal role which means ensuring that it is fully aligned to who you are as a person and that you're able to bring to the table the strengths and values you have.
I also want to talk about the fact that when you execute an ideal role or a dream role, you're going to feel like you're in flow with it, and to feel like everything's good in the way that you're doing on a day-to-day basis.
Episode Highlights
· 01:55 - I hear from a lot of people, particularly the lawyers that I've worked with, who have professional services backgrounds, that they want to make a change. They know that where they are right now is not where they want to be.
· 03:50 - When it comes to making the pivot, I've realized that there's so much time and energy that you spend at work on a day-to-day basis.
· 07:45 – We can’t just rely on our experience; you have to recognize that sometimes exposure needs to happen before you can experience something else.
· 09:10 - When I first started out in my business, I invested in programs, and got in rooms with people who had achieved the thing that I wanted to achieve.
· 11:05 - When you drill down and think about your skillset, and you think about the commerciality of your mind-set, and how it is that you can approach transactions, conversations and negotiations.
What you will learn:
One of the things that are consistent in terms of what clients say to me after they've gone through my program is that they have now expanded their belief around what is possible, I was literally talking to a client in this January cohort of the program. I was asking what are some of your biggest takeaways and the client shared that one of her biggest takeaways was just recognizing what is possible for her and all of the possibilities that are out there inside her industry or adjacent to her current industry.
If you don’t get exposed to something, then you wouldn't be able to believe in it and won’t be able to move on to the next big thing. We don't necessarily have to focus on the big leagues, but even for you to make the shifts, or for you to make the pivots you need to know what's out there available for you. So you need to be able to expose yourself differently from how you're exposing yourself right now.
The thing that we need to be thinking about is not that I want to make a big career change but I can't take a pay cut so I'm going to have to stay where I am. Instead what we need to be thinking about is maintaining this level of salary. What are the potential adjacent opportunities that I could pursue which will allow me to continue to leverage the skills that I have and still come on with the type of salary that I have desired?

178 I How to Transition into a New Career Using What You Already Know
11 May 2022
00:14:19
In today’s episode of the Career Change Maker podcast, I talk about how your experience can be leveraged to make a career change without retraining.
The reason I am talking about this is that I was having a conversation with somebody who is in a place where she's thinking about making a move. She has been working in the same space for the last 10 years. So, she was enquiring whether the kind of moves she wants to make is going to be possible because she's been in the same position for the last 10 years.
Episode Highlights
· 02:40 - People think that this experience is only relevant to where I am right now, and if I was going to do something else, I need to build up a whole another bag of experience.
· 06:52 - The same way that you can bring value by bringing in your perspective and your lawyer brain in a commercial discussion, or in a negotiation, the same way that you can take what you have and use that in a different setting.
· 07:20 - Just because you're coming from a slightly different practice area doesn’t mean that there isn't any value that you can bring to an organisation.
· 09:25 - When we're thinking about leveraging our experience and we're thinking about making moves, please don't assume that you're going to have to start again.
· 11:25 - If you're trying to make a pivot, you can be very proactive to position yourself as someone that is interested in that area that is developing that skillset and knowledge in that area.
What you will learn:
If you think about some of the most brilliant business minds in the world, people who are charging the way forward in terms of innovation. Often, they spend time outside of the industry and out of the space that they operate in on a day-to-day basis. The reason why they do that is that stepping outside of your industry allows you to see things differently. It allows you to have a different perspective, and as a result, it inspires you.
When people are talking about the experience that you've gained, it's not just about the experience doing the job, in terms of the technical piece, it’s all of the experience that comes with you operating in this type of environment for this length of time and all of those skills that you have developed and you have displayed are transferable to other environments. But in order for you to transfer them, and view them to articulate how it's valuable, you need to appreciate it as a skill set. You really need to appreciate the experience that you've gained as valuable so that you can talk about it as valuable.
You can leverage the experience that you have to move into the type of role that you want to be doing. If you're unsure about how you can do that and what the step looks like how you would be able to leverage LinkedIn and how you would be able to position yourself then I would love to have a conversation with you.
177 I The Career Breakthrough That Comes When You Shift Your Perspective
10 May 2022
00:18:11
In today’s episode of the‘Career Change Maker podcast, I talk on the topic “The Impactful Career That You Desire Is On the Other Side of This Four Letter Word”. Lawyers are integral to our society, and then we see the fact that so many lawyers are feeling unfulfilled in the work that they're doing.
The reason I have chosen this topic is that I find it incredible that there are so many lawyers who are not feeling happy and fulfilled in the work that they are doing.
Episode Highlights
· 03:10 – Every commercial transaction, be it about the distribution of assets, or any other aspect of life, there is a lawyer involved or multiple lawyers involved.
· 07:00 – Besides seeing salary and company brand, there’re other factors that need to be considered in order for you to make the type of move, that's going to make sense.
· 08:55 - When you're feeling frustrated, and you're feeling this is something's not right, all you can see is that it's like you're looking ahead to tomorrow and nothing else. The focus is too much on where you are right now and what you can see right in front of you.
· 11:10 - In order for you to make sure that you're moving into a role that you feel good about, there needs to be more focus on the view.
· 15:00 - When I was thinking about making a difference like knowing that the work that I'm definitely making a difference, it needed to be more tangible and handled for me.
What you will learn:
When you think about the goals that people have, and the things that people are trying to achieve on a day-to-day basis, typically, somewhere along the line, there is going to be a lawyer involved. If you think about the impact that lawyers have in terms of how the world goes around is huge. However, so many lawyers are feeling unfulfilled in the work that they're doing. The value that lawyers bring to the marketplace is great, but why is it that we're not feeling it?
The fact is that the impactful career that you really want to experience is on the other side of a four-letter word, which is DATA. In order for you to really determine what change or move you need to make, a full assessment would be required of what is actually going on right now and that assessment might require you to zoom out and look at different pieces of data.
When you understand what strengths you bring to the table, when you truly understand your personality type, how you like to show up, and what your preferences are, then your considerations can be different when you're looking at the next opportunity. So strengths profile allows you to take an assessment, and then it highlights what your strengths are, and it lets you know what your weaknesses are.
176 I The Career Mistake That Keeps You Invisible in Your Corporate Role
09 May 2022
00:16:49
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about 3 ways to get recognition for the amazing job you are already doing and the importance of ensuring that you are positioning yourself to get the recognition that you desire and you deserve.
I am quite passionate about this topic because there's so much value that people are bringing, but they're not recognizing it as a value, and that's why I want to talk about this.
Episode Highlights
02:40 – There's a big difference between saying that I supported client retention and saying that I helped to make sure that the firm didn't lose 350k. Quantifying things makes such a difference but when you're in it, it's so easy to gloss over.
06:10 – There are three things that I want to talk about in order to make sure that you are getting the recognition that you need.
08:40 - One of the ways that we can remember our achievements when it is required is by keeping a record of achievements. It doesn't necessarily have to be all of the big things, it can just be about what contribution you have made.
10:50 - Being proactive does two things, it ensures that you are having the conversations that you need to have, and it also makes sure that you're visible because you're there doing the work, and getting the job done.
13:00 - Often people are not that comfortable talking about themselves. We need to get confident and comfortable when we are talking about ourselves if we really want to make an impact through the work that we're doing.
What you will learn:
What you must recognize is the value that you bring to a role and the thing that you get paid for the value that you're bringing. So it's not just showing up doing the job like that's a given. If you're hired to do a role, you're going to show up, you're going to do the role and you're going to execute. But when you are able to articulate what value you have brought to the role, when you can speak about that, and you can confidently articulate that, that is what allows you to make sure that you're getting the promotion that you want.
I want you to think about that how much are you going to get the job done, and then move on to the next thing? How much are you taking time to actually reflect on what you've been able to do, and the impact that has had on the people around you? The first thing for you is to keep a record of your achievements because it's hard to recall things when you want to record them. Keep it recorded either electronically or physically, because if you can record it, then you're able to talk about it.
Another thing that you want to be doing is creating opportunities to have conversations with the partner, director, or manager that you work with. This is because sometimes we can be waiting for them to tap you on the shoulder and say, do you want to have a performance review or an update? But you might need to create an opportunity because it's likely that their calendar is busy.
175 I The Hidden Career Problem Lawyers Ignore Until It’s Too Late
06 May 2022
00:12:01
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about the common career mistake lawyers make that keeps them feeling stuck. I am having this conversation, particularly because this is promotion season, and I thought it would be good to talk about this as I'm seeing it happen quite often.
Episode Highlights
· 02:00 – I want to support as many professional women as I can, particularly lawyers in this May Cohort of this career coaching program.
· 04:00 - On paper, if you're working hard, you're getting a promotion, and you're climbing the ladder then you are successful. But in reality, just getting the promotion isn't the only determining factor when it comes to success.
· 07:00 - As lawyers and professionals, sometimes we are so busy doing the work that we don't prioritise the time to take stock. Therefore, we feel the frustration and the misalignment, but we’re not paying attention to it.
· 08:45 - I think a lot of the time we're building up careers from an outside-in perspective, versus an inside-out perspective.
· 11:10 – I want to share with you the common mistake that the lawyers make is not paying enough attention to the misalignment that could be happening inside of their careers where there's misalignment between the expectations and the reality of what's going on.
What you will learn:
1. I often see a mismatch between the expectation of how we're going to feel, and then the reality of what happens when we get there because we use our logical brain. Your marker of success at the beginning, might not be your marker of success now. But one of the biggest mistakes lawyers make is not taking the time to take stock around this type of stuff, not recognising the misalignment that is happening, and not recognising that the misalignment is there.
2.The source of your frustration when you're saying expectations are not meeting the reality, that can be different for different people. So it's about you being able to say if I'm feeling frustrated then why is that? What about it is misaligned, and when do we need to go from here, because sometimes that misalignment can be a quick fix. Sometimes that misalignment means you need to consider doing things in a completely different way
174 I Why Your Career Feels Different After Covid as a Corporate Professional and 3 Easy Ways to Move Forward
05 May 2022
00:22:56
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about how my career changed for the better post-COVID-19 Lockdown.
I am going to be sharing this because in a lot of areas I've experienced that it is relevant to people that I have been speaking to who are considering making a career move right now. There is a lot of movement that's happening in the marketplace. We're hearing about the resignation, and the great big shuffle.
Episode Highlights
· 06:35 - The reality is that your legal career is very sticky, which means that there are a lot of reasons why you will feel like you need to stay where you are.
· 11:20 - Instead of focusing on whether it is even possible for me to make a move, that focus can go to how can I make a move from where I am now in a way that allows me to leverage all of my experience and expertise that I have.
· 13:30 - Are you the same version of you that you were when you first started out in your career or when you first started this role? If not, maybe we need to pay attention to who are you right now so that you can move into a role that is well-aligned with who you are as a person.
What you will learn:
I had time to think and reflect during the lockdown, and I asked myself the hard questions. What do I want to be doing with my career next? Yes, I have got to this point, and yes, I made the decision to get here but where do I want to go next? I came to a point where I had to decide whether I'm going to go all-in with my legal career or am I going to focus on the business because I didn't have the capacity to continue to do both.
If you're a lawyer yourself and if you have been having some of those same conversations with yourself then I totally get it because the reality is the time that has been invested, the energy that has been invested, the desire to continue to have intellectual stimulation is understandable. When you brainstorm alternative career paths, it's probably likely that there isn't much that's coming up for you where you can say, yes, I can see how that's going to work. And so, what ends up happening is you're trying to look at alternatives, but the alternatives seem viable, and so because the alternative is still viable you backtrack and you're saying, well, I probably just need to stay where it is that I am right now.
When I had time during the pandemic to pause and think and allow myself to explore what alternatives could look like. I guided myself through the data method and this method is about looking at defining exactly what it is you want to do with your career next, it is about aligning who you are as a person and what your expectations are to the vision that you now have. It's about creating a transition plan. How are you going to move out of the role that you're in right now toward what it is that you want to do?
173 | Sick of Feeling Guilty for Wanting More in Your Career? Try This Mindset Instead
27 Apr 2022
00:17:44
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about the topic of guilt and feeling bad about wanting to make a move.
The reason I want to talk about this topic is that it comes up time and time again when I'm working with clients who are contemplating making a career move.
Episode Highlights
· 01:22 - When you consider having worked in a role or being in a particular industry for a very long time, it can feel challenging to envision or even think about doing things in a different way.
· 03:17 - If you're in a role that you don't want to be in, but you're comfortable in that role, it means that you're missing out on the opportunity of carving out an experience in a role that is well-aligned.
· 05:55 - Just because I have decided on a particular path doesn't mean I have to stay there.
· 07:15 - My mission is to level the playing field for women in the workplace and help you to realize that it is possible for you to navigate your way through and align yourself to a role that is a good fit for you.
· 09:15 - Am I being unapologetic about what it is that I want and what it is that I'm working towards or am I coming from a place of I'm only going to allow myself to do the things that I think everyone else says I can do.
· 13:00 - You need to be in a position where you feel like your interest is aligned with what it is that the company is doing or you feel like your values are aligned with what it is that the company is standing for.
What you will learn:
If you're feeling that your career right now is not hitting the mark, that's not a bad thing. In fact, that's an indication that it is time for you to take action. It’s time for you to consider that if this isn't where I'm supposed to be, what is it that I'm supposed to be doing? And a lot of times when we think about it, we feel guilty or what might people think or what might my boss think or what might my colleagues think we sometimes make up stories in our mind. So, we're assuming that people will think and feel a certain way but do we have evidence to support that? Often not. We are accepting our assumptions as fact, and that whole process of accepting your assumptions as facts can be causing you to stay in a place where you don't want to be.
There are things that I need to do, there is an impact that I want to make that staying in that particular role will not allow me to fulfill. So, I had to separate myself from that feeling of guilt. If I remove that feeling of guilt and feeling bad that I want more, what would I want to do?
I want to encourage you to step into what is the next thing for you, where is it that you want to be going in your career and how is it that you want to navigate your way through versus feeling like there's something wrong with you actually wanting to do things in a different way. There's nothing wrong with it. If you're feeling it, it's okay to feel.
172 I How to Bridge the Gap Between Your Experience and Your Next Career Move
19 Apr 2022
00:16:18
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about why you need to stop saying that you don't have the experience required to go for what you want and what you should be doing instead.
The reason I have chosen this topic is that oftentimes when people are looking at making a career move, they feel like, they don't have enough experience in that, and how they would move into that. So, I want to talk to you about how to shift your thinking a little bit around this and how you can be focusing on other things than ‘I don't have enough experience’.
Episode Highlights
· 03:30 - When you're looking at a job specification and there is a list of things that the company has stated that they need in a candidate. I want you to realize that whoever has put that job spec has decided that these are the things that they require.
· 05:51 - If you're able to articulate that value, and can demonstrate how that is relevant for the type of role that you want to go into then it becomes less about if you have the specific bullet points and more about does the value that you have makes sense for what you want to move into?
· 07:52 - There's so much that you have been able to achieve and forget about because it's your experience and it is super easy for you to overlook the value that you bring.
· 09:53 - Just because you don't have this particular experience with a certain principle or method, that doesn't mean that you have to go back to school and study for two years, get a Master's, or get an MBA.
· 11:04 - We want to be looking at how would I build the bridge from where I am now to where it is I want to go?
What you will learn:
When you're looking at an organization are you looking at why are these different elements important! When you take the time to go a little bit deeper, what you might recognize is that I don't have that specific thing that they stated on the job spec. However, knowing what they're trying to achieve, or what their objectives are, there may be some brilliant experience that you may have that is relevant to this organization.
The first thing is, let's identify what value you have. Figure out how you can articulate that value to someone else, and then the second thing is identifying what those gaps are and figuring out what would be my plan to bridge those gaps. What would I need to do for me to get confident in those areas that I feel like I'm lacking so that I can perform the best in this type of role? So think about it objectively and strategically rather than feeling like I need to go back and get another degree.
I want to encourage people as they are thinking about what the next steps can be for them and they are thinking about what it is that they want to do. Don't discount yourself too easily just think about what you want to do and then make a plan of action as to how you can get there.
171 I Sick of Overthinking Your Career Change? Try This Approach Instead
28 Mar 2022
00:16:02
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk on the topic ‘How to Be More Confident in Your Career Change Choices’. I want to dive into how you can confidently take career change decisions in a way that's going to keep you moving forward rather than staying stuck.
The reason why I am discussing this topic is that often I see people waiting until they have any idea about what it is that they want to do before they take any action.
Episode Highlights
· 04:10 - The importance of recognizing the correction process does not begin with identifying what you want to do next because before you even get to that point, you need to know why this is what you want to go for.
· 06:25 - It's not about what should I do because should is the issue, should is probably the thing that got you to where you are now feeling like I'm just showing up every day doing a job that I don't want to do.
· 08:10 - If you're someone who's saying I've been trying to figure this out for ages, I've been going around in circles, just asking myself, what else should I do? What we start with is, what do I need for me to feel happy and fulfilled in the role.
· 10:37 - If you don't feel confident enough then you need to ask yourself, how am I coming up with the answers or the potential options.
· 12:20 - What you need to be able to do is to position yourself in a way that attracts the type of opportunities that you want going forward. But if you're not confident in yourself, then it's difficult to position yourself correctly in the marketplace.
What you will learn:
· Most of the thoughts that you think on a day-to-day basis are repeated. The statistic is that 90% of anything today is repeated for both yesterday, and so the things that you are consistently thinking about and the way that you're consistently approaching things is the pace at which you're trying to decide on doing something different.
· It is difficult to say this is the type of role which is right for me, because when you get to a certain point or phase in your career after you've gone through the first phase of settling into your professional role and climbing the ranks a little bit, then you want that role. Also, if you're not taking the time to check in with yourself, then it's likely it's going to be hard for you to identify what the right type of role is.
· In my Group Coaching Program, when I work with my clients, I talk a lot about making data-driven decisions. They don’t make decisions on a whim, instead, they take an approach where they ensure that they’re doing all that they can and collect enough data so that they can make an informed decision about the steps that they’re going to take to move them forward.

170 I The Truth About Career Advice And Who You Should Listen To
25 Mar 2022
00:15:27
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk on the topic of - Stop Seeking Career Change Advice from the Wrong People. I talk about why you need to recognize that in some areas in your career having external insight can really help.
The reason why I dive into this matter is that the advice that you gain from different people can shape your perspective, and that perspective can then inform the types of bias that is created in your mind around what is possible for you.
Episode Highlights
· 01:25 – Internal bias is an area that many women struggle with but sometimes overlook.
· 04:30 – There are two things I want you to consider when you're thinking about who it is you're seeking advice from when it comes to your career development.
· 06:50 - If you find yourself seeking out advice from the people and that advice helps you stay where you are, then perhaps you could consider this as productive.
· 08:12 - The person that you are asking advice from doesn't have all context, then is it fair to ask them for that advice, and expect that you're going to get an answer that you can rely on?
· 10:00 – As some of my family members and friends don't understand what I do as a career strategist, when it comes to me making career decisions about my business growth, I'm not going to go to them for advice.
· 11:55 – Seeking external guidance helps you in what you want to do in your career, and that can't always happen on a surface level, which sometimes takes time.
What you will learn:
· It is so important to make sure that you're surrounding yourself with people who are helping you to grow and to stretch but it also highlights the impact that other people's perspectives can have. This is why I want to talk about seeking advice from the right places when it comes to your career.
· The first thing is when you're thinking about whom to ask for advice then ask yourself why you asked that person. The second thing you want to be thinking about is who am I seeking advice from, what does that person have to bring to the conversation, or what insight do they have?
· Seeking advice from someone who has the information and is qualified enough to give you an answer is going to help you to move forward in your career. This is because not only are they going to be able to give you the answer, but they're going to be able to ask you questions that can be so powerful. Those questions will allow you to step outside of the trade that you've been on, and allow you to shift your perspective and think about things from another angle.
169 I She Changed Industry Got Career Promoted and Increased Her Income. Here’s How
19 Mar 2022
00:22:40
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I want to talk about how to change the industry, get promoted, and secure a salary increase, simultaneously. I'm going to be discussing one of my clients who were able to make the move off and share with you three things that she focused on, and helped her to be able to move forward into a role that she was excited about.
The reason I am talking about this topic is that there are professionals who are considering making some kind of move in their career but they assume that making a move is going to require them to start at the bottom.
Episode Highlights
· 02:26 - My client had been at the same company for 11 years, and she was at the stage where she was no longer feeling aligned with the values of the organization. She knew that she wants to make a change.
· 06:13 - The first thing that my client did was to address the assumptions around what would be possible for her moving forward. When she did that, she was able to open up her mind to the possibilities and permit herself to explore.
· 12:10 – She was able to see the overlap between the industry that she was in before choosing the oil and gas space and see what the opportunities were in the industry that she was targeting.
· 14:47 - She stepped into a senior leadership position all because of the way that she positioned her existing experience not because she has experience within the industry or within that particular industry, doing that particular role.
· 16:16 – For my client what helps her was, being able to understand the problem and then linking her expertise and her previous experience to how she would approach those problems going forward.
What you will learn:
When you're thinking about the assumption that I am a professional with 10 plus years’ experience, so I'm going to have to start at the bottom, I want you to think about, how could that 10 plus years of experience serve me differently? How that could be applied in a different setting?
Look into your experience, not from a high level like, I spent these many years in this role, but what have you been doing? What excellent feedback have you got from clients? What approach do you take? So all of those things, understanding those to high levels allow you to then articulate the value of those things to a potential employer, even if it's in a different industry.
If you're moving into a different industry, but you understand what the challenges are, you're able to move beyond just looking at a job spec and saying, oh, do I tick those boxes, but be speaking to how you can be the solution to the problem that they are facing and how all of that relevant experience that you have identified helps you to be the best candidate for the role.
168 I What Is Really Missing from Your Career Change Process
11 Mar 2022
00:21:31
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I talk about the one thing you need to make a successful career change. If you are someone who is feeling frustrated in your current role then the likelihood is that you're taking this approach of starting to look at job boards, and searching for opportunities.
I think that the people who are willing to innovate, who are willing to adapt, and who are willing to look at different ways of doing things, are the ones who are going to succeed and rise both inside organizations and industries in general.
Episode Highlights
· 04:30 - There's a time and a place for everything, and when you don't do things in order, you end up sabotaging your results.
· 06:15 - When I talk about commitment, it comes down to you making a decision, like, is this something that I want to do or if I am ready to make a career change?
· 09:05 - The reality is, when you're in the midst of something, or making a transition it isn't necessarily easy, but if you have that commitment, then you can go back to that.
· 11:00 - If you are sitting in your organization, and you are saying this isn't aligned with my values then I want you to know that you are showing up spending a lot of time. You are contributing there, when you could be making a contribution somewhere else, and be moving towards making the type of impact that you want to make.
· 19:10 – I want to encourage you that the one thing that you need is the commitment to the process or commitment to figuring out what this role needs to look like.
What you will learn:
There's a misalignment between how you're showing up and how you are putting yourself out there in the market, and the type of person who's looking for someone to hire within their organization. So if you are thinking about making a move, and you're not sure what that looks like, slow down, and pause, don't start updating anything just yet.
Commitment to the process is the biggest thing, commitment to saying that I'm going to make a career change so that it's not dependent on what the outcome looks like. If the commitment is not there, then the likelihood of you staying in the course and you do what is required to make this transition is going to be slim.
The people that sit in positions of authority are making a huge impact on the way that we do things and the way that we do life. So, if you are in your situation, think about what impact you could potentially be making if you were to take yourself out of that environment where you don't feel like it's the right place for you to be.
When it is possible for you to design the type of lifestyle that you want, it is also possible for you to enjoy the work that you do and make an impact through it.
167 I How to Make a Career Change When the Timing Feels Uncertain with Nakisha Hicks
04 Mar 2022
00:47:15
In today’s episode of the ‘Career Change Maker’ podcast, I am interviewing an amazing guest who works with women to guide them in their careers by assisting in equipping and strengthening them to discover their potential. I am talking to Nakisha about what it has felt like to make a career change amid a pandemic, some of the things that she had to think about when she was deciding when and how she would make her transition.
Episode Highlights
· 05:12 – Nakisha wasn't doing what she wanted to do anymore. She had met the goals that she had set for herself, but she wasn't doing that purpose visibility work that she wanted to get.
· 09:06 – It’s important to recognize when you're making a shift but you may require to be a new version of yourself.
· 15:24 - As you increase your level of self-awareness, you're able to do things that you need to do whether this is in a business or within a role that you're in, in a way that works for you.
· 27:03 - If you're trying to figure out what you're good at, think about your family and your friends. What do they often ask you for help with? Says Nakisha.
· 31:17 – Nakisha mentions, if you sit down and you do the pre-work and self-reflection, then it makes the job search so much easier.
· 41:35 – Nakisha has a signature program geared specifically towards HR professionals. If you are interested in that then definitely follow her.
· 44:46 - You can get creative with the stuff. There's no one way to do a thing, but whatever the goal is, you can get it done.
What you will learn:
It's being thoughtful about the decisions that help us to transition better. It's thinking about things from a tactical perspective, but also thinking about the mindset shifts that you're going to have to do. It is doing the research and understanding, what are you working with, and how does that translate into the next world that you’re trying to go into?
We often don't use all of our talents in our workspaces, because we're boxed into an agenda that whatever the organization has for us for that position that they hired us for. So, if we're lucky, sometimes we'll be able to kind of branch out and do those things that are according to our expertise, but it's when you step out and you become a business owner, you get to fully operate in those gifts that you had.
When you're thinking about transitioning, it is about, who you know, it is not about what you know. It is about being able to stretch yourself come out of your comfort zone. So, if you want to move around, you definitely can. But you have to put the things in place and you have to grow and cultivate your networks.
