The Challenge of Setting Boundaries02 Oct 202400:07:55

One of the most distressing aspects of dealing with an emotionally abusive individual is their persistent disregard for boundaries. Most of us are left feeling powerless. In this podcast, we dive into having boundaries for yourself instead of focusing on changing the abuser's behavior—which often leads to disappointment.

What Recovery FEELS Like with Paul Colaianni14 Aug 202400:49:18

Today, Paul interviews me! Paul Colaianni brings his unique perspective as both a former emotionally abusive person turned healer. He shares that abusers often employ grooming tactics like mirroring their victim’s interests to gain trust before turning the tables to exert control. I recount my personal battle with emotional abuse. I describe how she lost touch with her intuition and began conflating my needs with those imposed by my partner.

Key takeaways from this conversation include:
🔹 Understanding how to differentiate between needs and wants in relationships
🔹 Learning the importance of maintaining individual identity within partnerships
🔹 Recognizing the value in honoring yourself while still caring for others

Parallel Parenting Explained11 Jan 202300:20:35

I define parallel parenting as a method of parenting that allows each parent to use a separate approach to when they have the kids. Their parenting does not intersect, as each parent is independent (versus more of a team approach). It’s mostly used when co-parents want little to no contact with each other. Parents rarely attend the same functions, appointments, or child-related events. If they do, they do not sit together and are not expected to communicate. This is contrary to co-parenting which involves more of a team approach.

When you are in a toxic situation, or a relationship with a narcissist, co-parenting can be a breeding ground for the high-conflict partner to control or manipulate. When you try to co-parent with them, it can leave you feeling exhausted, constantly trying new things to “keep the peace” – but failing. You may feel at a loss because nothing will work as easily as it “should.”

This episode breaks down parallel parenting. I hope it is helpful and sheds light on a very tough topic.

What I Learned from Being in a Relationship with a Narcissist04 Jan 202300:10:57

Most people don’t even realize they are getting into a relationship with a Narcissist. They are skillfully manipulative - which allows them to come off as charming and loving. But Narcissistic relationships are always emotionally abusive - which includes put-downs, accusations, criticism, gaslighting and threats. The end goal is always to keep their Narcissistic supply of constant attention and admiration.

I am a completely different person than I was when I was with my ex - and while I do not wish the pain of a Narcissistic relationship on anyone - this podcast covers a few lessons I learned in healing from Narcissistic Abuse.

Emotional and Narcissistic Abuse Q & A14 Dec 202200:30:21

Questions and answers on Emotional Abuse and Narcissism

1. Is calling names, pointing fingers and degrading me during a fight when things go wrong abuse? Why do they pretend all is well during the calm cycle? How does one get out?

2. I love the Relationship Recovery Course. Did you always want to be a Life Coach?

3. Is it normal that I'm suddenly obsessed with learning more about Narcissism since I see these traits in my husband?

4. He's trying to hoover me back after I went no contact, but I can't help but feel guilty. What do I do?

5. I'm fresh out of an insanely toxic, abusive in every way relationship, and I can't stop cycling through the good memories. How do I make it? I want to call him.

6.  I found out last night that my Narc-ex is now engaged to a new girl while I'm still recovering from all the trauma. He caused me to throw away all the plans we made, he threw away so easily.  Do you have any advice? I was doing better until this pushed me down again.

7. I'm having a hard time accepting that what would happen to me is emotional abuse. Other people have had it worse than me. My situation has caused me a lot of anxiety and depression. Any advice?

8. Can you heal from a trauma bond if you stay with the same person who caused it?

9. Is it normal to care about my narcissistic ex that I hope they get the proper mental health?

10. My narcissistic ex somehow still knows everything I'm doing and is now accusing me of stealing his friends. We're supposed to be at a wedding this weekend, and he lied and said they didn't want me there, so I opted not to go. Is this normal behavior? Will he stop?

11. My narcissistic spouse makes me highly anxious, and I've developed high blood pressure and a fast heart rate, but he says I just have anxiety issues. Is it normal to have physical symptoms of emotional abuse?

12. Can an emotional abuser change?

13. Did you ever date again?

The Rules of a Non-Abusive Relationship Do Not Apply to a Narcissistic Breakup09 Dec 202200:04:59

This is a rant. The rules of the game are not the same. The abuse is real. This page is called Emotional Abuse Coach so if this content is not for you, please go elsewhere, like Not Emotional Abuse Coach, and comment there. You are showing how un-empathetic you are to those who are going through Narcissistic Abuse. This has been happening since I created the page and I do not wish to argue, or even reply, to the comments, but I will not act like they aren't part of the problem because they are. This is how people react to victims of abuse and it PERPETUATES THE PROBLEM OF ABUSE.

Am I Responsible for Feeling Abused?18 Nov 202200:07:13

"When reminding my partner that he needs to take responsibility for his emotions, and that I can't be blamed for his anger, he responded that it should be the same for me and that he shouldn't be held responsible for my feeling abused, and that I should be responsible for those feelings."

This was a question that came in through my Instagram. I answer this question in the episode.

Emotional Abuse on Netflix Love is Blind (Matt and Colleen)10 Nov 202200:16:59

Matt's behavior on Love is Blind is the text book definition emotional abuse. Their interactions triggered me all season long, and after seeing Colleen visibly scared on the reunion, I wanted to record a podcast breaking down the behavior and looking at their interactions through the lens of Emotional Abuse.

Netflix should add a trigger warning to the episodes and provide resources for victims of abuse.

Post Separation Abuse and the Family Court System {Interview with Tina Swithin}09 Nov 202200:45:58

Tina Swithin, the founder of One Moms Battle and Advocate in the Family Court System, discusses her story, post-separation abuse, strategies a safe parent can employ to cope, and some of the current issues in the Family Court System.

Tina survived a “Category Five Divorce Hurricane” while acting as her own attorney in a high-conflict custody battle that turned her family’s life upside down for over a decade. While divorces are never easy, Tina quickly learned that divorcing a narcissist or another high-conflict individual escalates family law cases to levels few can comprehend.

This episode is beneficial to anyone navigating the Family Court System. It will help you feel seen, heard and validated.

Narcissistic Projection Explained04 Nov 202200:07:24

A Narcissist projects their feeling onto you. Projection is sometimes an unconscious way of dealing with the presence of something inside of yourself, yet it gets externalized because it is so uncomfortable to be within yourself. A healthy person will notice they do this (or accept it when they are called out). A Narcissist continues to use it as a tool and project it onto you. This episode unpacks this concept and offers tools to help you see it for what it is.

When you don't know you're being Gaslit, you defend yourself endlessly02 Nov 202200:16:07

Gaslighting affects your memory, your perception, your sanity, and your reality. To gaslight someone is to plant seeds of doubt in their mind, and make them question their own sense of reality, their perception, and their feelings. Since gaslighters lack self-awareness and empathy, they may not even realize that they're being manipulative.

But when you don't know that you're being gaslit, you defend yourself endlessly. And  the problem arises when they realize it (whether or not you told them) and don't change it. When they are hurting you and you see it. We can't control how someone treats us - but if you see the gaslighting and see what it is, you will stop defending yourself.

This episode will help you understand why that is so important and how you can start to see gaslighting for what it is and disengage.

The Three Faces of Your Partner in an Abusive Relationship31 Jul 202400:22:01

Does it feel like you need to heal from multiple versions of one person? It can feel almost impossible to find acceptance and solace as you heal from a person that did not even truly exist. In this episode, I talk about healing from the love bomber, devaluer, and the unrecognizable stranger (which we sometimes see all in one day).

I will cover the intoxicating highs of the 'love bombing' phase and its heartbreaking revelation as a facade, discuss how devaluation erodes self-esteem and learn strategies to reclaim your worth, and recognize the cold indifference during discard.

The Difference Between Therapy and Coaching21 Oct 202200:05:10

This episode explores the difference between a therapist and a life coach.

A life coach helps you look at the present and the future. We help you identify patterns in your past behavior so you can work towards a healthy future. We work on specific goals and actions to keep you motivated in your journey and unpack things when you get stuck. Most times, the work is tailored to you, and will help you work through limited beliefs and unhealthy patterns.

What Emotional Abuse Looks and Feels Like19 Oct 202200:08:44

Emotional Abuse is not easily understood by those who haven't been through it. Some common signs include: you may feel insecure and have a low self-esteem. You might be depressed or anxious (or both). You may feel you need to justify everything you say.  You may withdraw from people even when you're around them. You might no longer go out and socialize.

In this episode, I discuss signs of verbal, psychological and emotional abuse, and how it feels to be in it.

You can also share this episode with a friend who may not understand what you're going through.

End of Season Updates26 Aug 202200:02:56

30 episodes and 1000+ downloads later and Season 1 is complete! I didn't intend to have a "season" but I am feeling a need (and want) to refocus the podcast, work on my episodes, and plan out what I will talk about next season.

This has been a really great learning process for me. I totally ripped off the bandaid and just started doing it. I leaned on the information I've learned, what I've gone through, and trusted that if I keep showing up, everything will align.

Season 2 will begin in October! Until then, I will be sharing some clips from the most popular episodes on my Instagram ❤️

Why Other Peoples Opinions Do Not Matter13 Jul 202200:03:16

Other people will claim to know what is best and give you advice based on their history and perspective, but most people, who have not been through emotional abuse, will not understand emotional abuse.

I hope this episode is a permission slip for you to let the opinions of others fade -- so you can focus on your own reality.

Interview with a Love Witch17 Jun 202200:44:16

Interview with Sensual Coach Gwen Walsh. Gwen is a Tarot Reader, Intuitive and Sensual Coach. Working with Gwen throughout my Emotionally Abusive and Toxic relationship helped me experience my life as a viewer and step out of my own way - offering a new perspective on my situation when "thinking" through it didn't.

I've worked with Gwen through all areas of life, including my romantic relationship, business, my daughter and my former marriage.

This episode explores how working with Tarot can help inform relationships, how we work with relationships, and how Gwen approaches specific issues in relationships. We also get geeky and talk about specific Tarot cards and how we interpret them.

I highly recommend booking a reading with her if you feel stuck and need to shake things up. You can learn more about Gwen's work and the specific offerings she mentions here: https://www.gwenwalsh.com/work-with-me

How to Use Canned Responses as a Boundary15 Jun 202200:06:45

Canned Responses for Toxic Relationships.

Using Canned Responses is often the first step in creating boundaries. Boundaries allow you to draw a line between you and another person - and you and yourself. However, setting boundaries in an abusive relationship is almost impossible. You'll find yourself in endless text, calls and emails with no way out having the same conversation again and again, explaining the same things repeatedly and getting absolutely nowhere -- often.

Using Canned Responses can help you start to set boundaries and get out of toxic conversation patterns.

7 Ways to Starve a Narcissist06 Jun 202200:11:09

Starve them of your interest. If you keep giving them your attention and engaging with them, their toxic presence will stay in your life. If you stay emotionally neutral, uninterested, and unengaged, the narcissist will turn to someone else to get their needs met.

Trauma Bonding is Betrayal Trauma17 Jul 202400:16:19

A trauma bond is not because you have shared trauma.  On this episode, I delve into the often misunderstood concept of trauma bonds. Trauma bonds are not formed by shared traumatic experiences but rather through betrayal trauma within the cycle of abuse. This podcast aims to clarify what constitutes a trauma bond and offers insights on how you can begin the healing process.

What is the Difference Between a Narcissist and an Abuser?04 May 202200:18:44

Many people who are in an abusive relationship will refer to their Abuser as a Narcissist - which is problematic because it put all abusers in the narcissism category when it's much more complex than that.

In todays episode, we talk about the difference between an abuser and narcissistic traits, the 9 traits of a Narcissist as defined by the DSM, and the effects of calling all abusers Narcissists.
