Navigating life's toughest moments and still finding the strength to move forward and show up —how do we do it?

On this heartfelt episode of the Yes You Can podcast, I open up about the profound challenges I've faced over the past seven months, including my horse Finn's traumatic surgery and the sudden loss of dear friends, family, and finally putting my dog Pinky to rest this week.

These events have taken a significant toll on my mental health, and I share the struggle of discussing grief while still in the throes of healing.

Through these personal stories, I aim to provide a lifeline for anyone grappling with similar hardships, reminding you that finding meaning and strength is possible even during the darkest times.

Creative Inspiration vs. Copycats: How to Give Credit as a Coach or Creator and What to Do if Your Work Has Been Plagiarized

lundi 21 août 2023Duration 48:34

Creative Copycats, Plagiarism, and Drawing the Line Between Inspiration and Imitation as a Coach and Creator

Have you ever felt the sting of seeing your original work, choreography, social media post or ideas taken or copied... without being given credit?

Flat out: it sucks, and it can feel like you've been robbed of something.

And in the realm of social media and online communities where content reels reign, trends are fast, and you don't even know who the original creator IS- it's not *always* intentional.

In this episode, I share my experiences with being copied as a creator, how I responded, and how you can both avoid it and address it if you ever find yourself in the same position.

A note: this episode isn't talking about plagiarism in the post-secondary education sphere, or, to provide any legal advice regarding  copyright infringements.

Resources mentioned:
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert - the phenomenon of two people having the same unique idea.
Terms & Conditions and Copyright Agreements - I use Contracts Market for all of my legal agreements.

Key takeaways:

  • The difference between inspiration and plagiarism
  • How to give credit when you're inspired by someone else
  • How to approach someone when you'd like to collaborate, duplicate, or work with someone's original concept
  • How to address someone when you feel that they've copied or duplicated your work
  • Examples of what this can look like in social media, indoor cycling, and work

When to Quit: Burnout, Breaks, and Toxic Studios

jeudi 3 août 2023Duration 26:58

If you're dragging yourself to the studio (or your workplace) and have a deep feeling that you might be "done" with teaching... This episode is for you.

In this quick, straight-to-the-point chat I dive into the sensitive topic of recognizing when it's time to make a change in your life, whether you're an indoor cycling instructor or anyone facing burnout and challenges.

I even get personal about the time I should have left a workplace sooner than I did, and how it's affected me since.

Whether you're an indoor cycling instructor OR someone who has a niggling feeling that it might be time to quit, this episode is for you.

STUDIO SALES ACCELERATOR: AUGUST 20 WORKSHOP REGISTRATION

RESOURCES MENTIONED:

  • The Big Leap by Gaye Hendricks
  • Crucial Conversations book

🎙️ Episode Highlights:

  1. Recognizing Burnout: Are you just disinterested or truly done? Pay attention to how long you've been feeling this way and whether it's a consistent feeling of being over it.
  2. Physical and Mental Symptoms: Identify the physical and mental symptoms you experience, like migraines or chronic stress, as they can be indicators that it's time for a break.
  3. The Zone of Genius: We talk about how to recognize the difference between operating in your "zone of excellence" (where you excel but might not be fully passionate) and your "zone of genius" (where you feel aligned, energized, and creative).
  4. Toxic Work Environment: Toxicity can take a toll on your confidence and well-being for years to come- and one of the few situations where I recommend getting the F out as soon as humanly possible.
  5. Taking a Break: Sometimes, all you need is a break to recharge and get creatively inspired. Take time away from the usual routine to rediscover your passion.
  6. Reducing Your Schedule: A reduced schedule can be liberating and help you focus on your strengths and other side hustles that bring you joy.
  7. Positive Closure: Leave on a high note if you feel it's time to move on. Don't be afraid to take a hiatus; remember, you can always return.

Quitting or taking a break is not a sign of failure but a courageous step toward personal growth and self-care. Tune in to gain insights and discover the best path for you! 🎧🚴‍♀️

Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry

jeudi 20 juillet 2023Duration 35:14

My take on Community > Competition in the Fitness Industry?

Sometimes, it's bullshit.

Stay with me: I don't think it should be.

In fact, I think Community Over Competition is the thing that makes group fitness magic. It's what quiets the ego, centers our clients/riders, and lifts everyone up.

It moves our entire industry forward and therefore helps more people have the lifechanging impact we know is possible through group fitness.

But sometimes, people use it as a slogan for a shirt without actually embodying what it MEANS to say, Community>Competition.

Or, we ourselves can slide into competing with our own team, being passive-aggressive when riders/clients share they're going to another studio, or fail to celebrate the achievements of others.

EPISODE OVERVIEW:

In this episode, I give an update on my life for the last 8 weeks (PS, it's been rocky... and I might cry for just a second in the intro), share where I'm going, and a metaphor for coming out of the darkness.

Around 11 minutes in, I share my TOP takeaways for embodying Community over Competition even when your ego tries to push you into comparing and competing with others.

Top takeaways:

  • Celebrate your team (instructors). Their success doesn't mean you won't have it too.
  • Encourage your riders/clients to expand their modalities and workouts
  • Plan a group workout to go to another studio with your riders, instructors, etc.
  • Allow yourself to be inspired by the success of others
  • As a studio: don't market your community by encouraging others to leave the ones they're currently a part of (a la SoulCycle/Peloton)
