Should we legalise ALL drugs? The ‘war on drugs’, substance misuse and how to address them

Season 2 · Episode 5

samedi 26 novembre 2022Duration 01:41:38

Approximately 650,000 people die from direct or indirect drug overdose across the world. Interestingly, there are 2.6 million deaths attributed to alcohol misuse and 8.7 million deaths attributed to smoking globally. The health complications caused by legal substances such as alcohol raises questions around the justification for criminalising recreational drug use or possession. In this episode, we highlight the reasons for and against the legalisation of all recreational drugs, including cocaine, heroin and more. Are governments winning the ‘war on drugs’?

NB: Please note we do not condone the use of illegal substance use. This is a productive discussion to encourage public engagement and address substance misuse as a global health threat.

Are recreational drugs worse than alcohol? Is legalisation the best way to address drug use and addiction? Share your thoughts with us at worldhealthinvestigation@gmail.com

Should we legalise abortion? Is being PRO-LIFE ANTIFEMINIST?

Season 2 · Episode 1

samedi 29 octobre 2022Duration 01:14:58

According to the WHO, 4.7–13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion each year and 6 out of 10 of all unintended pregnancies end in an induced abortion. However safe abortion services are still inaccessible in many countries due to several reasons. In this episode, we highlight the implications of legalising abortion services and discuss the role of pro-life feminism in modern day society. We make references to the overturn of the Roe v. Wade policy that conferred the right to have an abortion in the US. Is being pro-life anti-feminist?  Share your thoughts with us at worldhealthinvestigation@gmail.com

We will not settle for leftover vaccines – COVAX, vaccine access and equity

Season 1 · Episode 12

samedi 4 juin 2022Duration 45:03

To date, it is estimated that in high- and upper-middle-income countries, 81% of the population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. However, in low-income countries, only about 17% of the population has received at least one vaccine dose. Why do we see this gap in vaccination rates? What is being done to address it? In our final episode of the season,  we discuss vaccine access and equity and look into the successes and failures of COVAX – an initiative led by Gavi and other global organisations to provide equitable access to COVID-19 diagnostics, treatments and vaccines to everyone worldwide.

This week's case study: COVAX - https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/covax-explained

You have budget for anti-terrorism, but could not prepare for a WHOLE PANDEMIC?

Season 1 · Episode 11

samedi 28 mai 2022Duration 01:02:18

Coronaviruses had been a major concern as infectious agents with  pandemic-causing potential, years before the COVID-19 pandemic. Advancements in DNA sequencing mechanisms can help us detect pathogens early and study them appropriately. So why were we still not prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic? In this episode we discuss the challenges of pandemic preparedness and evaluate the response to COVID-19 by key players such as national governments and the World Health Organisation. We also reflect on lessons learned and what could be done differently.
