| Reimagining the Highlands with Will Sadler & Fiona Mackenzie | 04 Nov 2025 | 01:09:20 | |
Join me for a conversation with podcast producer Will Sadler about his work on the "Highlands Reimagined" series. Will explains his process of making a show about life in the Highlands and how his work was inspired by the young people featured on the show. We are joined by Fiona Mackenzie, manager of the Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill, who commissioned the podcast series through their artist residency programme. Fiona shares her insight as a local Highlander, and even answers the age-old question I get asked all the time, when I'm on tour: what do people in the Highlands do for work? This conversation is inspired by the 3-part "Highlands Reimagined" series, which we featured on Wild for Scotland in September 2025. If you haven't done so yet, it makes sense to scroll back and listen to the series first, before returning to my chat with Will and Fiona. | A Whole New World - Kayaking round the Isle Martin, Summer Isles | 30 Mar 2021 | 00:26:43
What does the Scottish coast look like from the water? This episode of Wild for Scotland leaves the solid ground of beaches and cliffs behind and explores the north-west coast and the Isle Martin by kayak. ‘A Whole New World’ is a story about changing your perspective in order to learn something new about a place you thought you knew like the back of your hand. Travelling is all about these kinds of learning experiences for me. Kayaking is one of my favourite ways to explore and change my viewpoint. This trip to the Isle Martin, an outlier among the Summer Isles is no exception. In this episode, we learn about the history of the Scottish kelp industry, the geology of the Summer Isles and the wildlife you can expect to encounter on the north-west coast – from seabirds to marine wildlife and even otters. A big thank you to Will Copestake of Kayak Summer Isles for his help researching this episode. Are you ready? Great – let’s travel to Scotland! | Wake Up - Wild Camping on the Isle of Bute | 16 Mar 2021 | 00:25:40
Is waking up to the sound of the sea always the peaceful experience you imagine? This episode of Wild for Scotland whisks you away to the Isle of Bute to find out. ‘Wake Up’ is a story about my first-ever solo wild camping experience. I chose the West Island Way for this adventure, a 30-mile long-distance trail that runs across the Isle of Bute. The island isn’t far from Glasgow – just a hop, skip and a jump away – but its coast is the perfect place to pitch your tent in solitude and pretend you’re in some remote corner of the country. The West Island Way is very beginner-friendly and most people can walk it in 2-3 days. Camping is optional, as the hike is well-connected by bus and there are lots of B&Bs on Bute. But, I wanted to give it a try – especially because I had never wild camped on my own. Needless to say, it came with its own challenges… You’ll have to listen to find out more! After the story I share some of my top tips for a trip to the Isle of Bute and a hike on the West Island Way. Are you ready? Great – let’s travel to Scotland! Support this show on Patreon. | Island Hopping - Boat trip to Iona, Staffa & the Treshnish Isles | 02 Mar 2021 | 00:25:34
How many islands can you visit in one day? The first episode of Wild for Scotland sees us embarking on an adventure on the west coast. “Island Hopping” tells the story of a day trip by boat to visit the Isles of Iona, Staffa and Lunga of the Treshnish Isles – all from our home base on the Isle of Mull. That’s 4 islands in one day! We wander among the medieval ruins and moorlands of Iona, hop on a shaky boat ride to the Isle of Lunga, hike to the top of a tall cliff to see – you guessed it – puffins, and eventually find our way to the mythical Isle of Staffa with its famous sea cave and black basalt columns. Then, I give you my top 5 tips to visit the Iona, Staffa and Lunga yourself. Are you ready? Great – let’s travel to Scotland! Read my blog post about this tour. | Paradise - Birdwatching on Handa Island | 18 Feb 2025 | 00:12:43
'Paradise' is a story about a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland, along a famous road trip route: the North Coast 500. Join me for a boat trip to the bird island Handa, a paradise for nesting seabirds and nature lovers alike. I wrote this story a few years ago - several months before I started this podcast. It was during the pandemic, and I longed for those days when I could simply jump in the car, hop on a ferry and visit a small uninhabited island off the shore. I finally recorded and shared the story last month, as a bonus episode for the Wild for Scotland Social Club 🐬 (that’s my Patreon community). As such, this story is a taste of what you can expect when you join the Social Club as a regular listener of the show. | Slow Travel Special: Guided Nature Meditation | 05 Nov 2024 | 00:15:08
Last week, I spoke with Francesca Lo Verso, an outdoor therapist and host of the “We Are Here, Too” podcast. One of the questions I asked her was about exercises we can do to tune into our surroundings, feel more present in the moment and connect with nature around us. From this, we came up with the idea to create a special episode with a couple of guided nature meditations for you. So, today, we aren’t travelling anywhere in particular. Instead, I invite you to hit pause, metaphorically speaking of course, and take a moment to connect with nature through two guided exercises. Help us spread the word about Wild for Scotland!
