Reimagining the Highlands with Will Sadler & Fiona Mackenzie

Episode 93

mardi 4 novembre 2025Duration 01:09:20

Join me for a conversation with podcast producer Will Sadler about his work on the "Highlands Reimagined" series. Will explains his process of making a show about life in the Highlands and how his work was inspired by the young people featured on the show.

We are joined by Fiona Mackenzie, manager of the Strathnaver Museum in Bettyhill, who commissioned the podcast series through their artist residency programme. Fiona shares her insight as a local Highlander, and even answers the age-old question I get asked all the time, when I'm on tour: what do people in the Highlands do for work?

This conversation is inspired by the 3-part "Highlands Reimagined" series, which we featured on Wild for Scotland in September 2025. If you haven't done so yet, it makes sense to scroll back and listen to the series first, before returning to my chat with Will and Fiona.

The Cure - Climbing Goatfell on the Isle of Arran

Episode 6

mardi 13 avril 2021Duration 22:48

What to do when you wake up to a sunny day in Scotland and you're longing for an island getaway? This episode of Wild for Scotland heads on a day trip to the Isle of Arran.

'The Cure' is a story about a day trip from Glasgow to the Isle of Arran. I take you with me to the island on a hike that was only made harder by the one too many drams I had the night before in the pub... We're hiking to the top of Goatfell, the highest mountain on Arran.

After the story, I share some of my top tips to visit the Isle of Arran, whether you are coming for a day or longer, hiking Goatfell or want to see something else the island has to offer.

They don't call it "Scotland in Miniature" for nothing!

Are you ready? Great - let's travel to Scotland!

A Whole New World - Kayaking round the Isle Martin, Summer Isles

Episode 5

mardi 30 mars 2021Duration 26:43

What does the Scottish coast look like from the water? This episode of Wild for Scotland leaves the solid ground of beaches and cliffs behind and explores the north-west coast and the Isle Martin by kayak.

‘A Whole New World’ is a story about changing your perspective in order to learn something new about a place you thought you knew like the back of your hand. Travelling is all about these kinds of learning experiences for me.

Kayaking is one of my favourite ways to explore and change my viewpoint. This trip to the Isle Martin, an outlier among the Summer Isles is no exception.

In this episode, we learn about the history of the Scottish kelp industry, the geology of the Summer Isles and the wildlife you can expect to encounter on the north-west coast – from seabirds to marine wildlife and even otters.

A big thank you to Will Copestake of Kayak Summer Isles for his help researching this episode.

Are you ready? Great – let’s travel to Scotland!

Wake Up - Wild Camping on the Isle of Bute

Episode 4

mardi 16 mars 2021Duration 25:40

Is waking up to the sound of the sea always the peaceful experience you imagine? This episode of Wild for Scotland whisks you away to the Isle of Bute to find out.

‘Wake Up’ is a story about my first-ever solo wild camping experience. I chose the West Island Way for this adventure, a 30-mile long-distance trail that runs across the Isle of Bute. The island isn’t far from Glasgow – just a hop, skip and a jump away – but its coast is the perfect place to pitch your tent in solitude and pretend you’re in some remote corner of the country.

The West Island Way is very beginner-friendly and most people can walk it in 2-3 days. Camping is optional, as the hike is well-connected by bus and there are lots of B&Bs on Bute.

But, I wanted to give it a try – especially because I had never wild camped on my own. Needless to say, it came with its own challenges… You’ll have to listen to find out more!

After the story I share some of my top tips for a trip to the Isle of Bute and a hike on the West Island Way.

"Out of Nowhere" is a story about my first day on the Hebridean Way - 155-mile long-distance trail across the Outer Hebrides. I take you with me on the ferry to Castlebay, my journey to the start of the hike and up into the hills of Barra. And as you can imagine - not everything went entirely to plan...

Lullaby - Exploring the Isle of Tiree by Bike

Episode 2

mardi 9 mars 2021Duration 25:08

What does the Scottish west coast sound like? This episode of Wild for Scotland invites you on a journey to the Isle of Tiree.

“Lullaby” tells the story of a day I spent on the Isle of Tiree exploring its different sounds and landscapes.

The adventure begins at Glasgow airport with a flight on a tiny Twin Otter machine and sees me discover the nooks and crannies of the island by bike. We visit beaches, learn about the history of the island and meet some of the locals.

After the story, I give you top 5 tips to visit the Isle of Tiree yourself.

Island Hopping - Boat trip to Iona, Staffa & the Treshnish Isles

Episode 1

mardi 2 mars 2021Duration 25:34

How many islands can you visit in one day? The first episode of Wild for Scotland sees us embarking on an adventure on the west coast.

“Island Hopping” tells the story of a day trip by boat to visit the Isles of Iona, Staffa and Lunga of the Treshnish Isles – all from our home base on the Isle of Mull. That’s 4 islands in one day!

We wander among the medieval ruins and moorlands of Iona, hop on a shaky boat ride to the Isle of Lunga, hike to the top of a tall cliff to see – you guessed it – puffins, and eventually find our way to the mythical Isle of Staffa with its famous sea cave and black basalt columns.

Then, I give you my top 5 tips to visit the Iona, Staffa and Lunga yourself.

Are you ready? Great – let’s travel to Scotland!
