What If You See Yourself Differently Than Everyone Else? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Season 2, Episode 0230 oct. 202600:07:25

What if the person you believe yourself to be is not the person everyone else experiences?

You think you are being honest. Someone else experiences you as cruel.

You believe you are helping. They feel controlled.

You see yourself as patient, confident, or independent. But what do other people see when they look at you?

In the second episode of Season 2, we explore the gap between our own self-image and the way others experience us.

Because knowing your intentions is not the same as understanding your impact.

And sometimes, the most difficult person to see clearly is yourself.

• Why our intentions can differ from other people's experiences
• How self-perception creates blind spots
• Why we call our own behavior by different names
• Whether other people's opinions can reveal something we cannot see
• How to distinguish useful feedback from an unfair judgment
• What happens when the person you believe yourself to be contradicts the person others describe

If everyone who knows you described you differently than you describe yourself, would you trust your own understanding — or would you begin to question it?

And what would you be most afraid to discover?

Do You Really Know Yourself? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Season 2, Episode 0129 oct. 202600:05:00

You believe you know yourself. But what if the person you understand the least is yourself?

In the opening episode of Season 2, we explore the gap between who we believe we are and what our actions reveal about us.

Why do we explain away our mistakes? Can we distinguish an honest explanation from an excuse? And what happens when our actions contradict the values we claim to hold?

Perhaps knowing yourself isn't about achieving complete certainty. Perhaps it begins with questioning the story you tell yourself.

IN THIS EPISODE

• How we construct stories about our own character
• Why knowing what you do isn't the same as knowing why
• How self-image influences our interpretation of choices
• The difference between self-knowledge and certainty
• Whether we're willing to question our beliefs about ourselves

QUESTION FOR YOU

If you discovered that your understanding of yourself was wrong, would you change who you are — or what you believe?

If You Couldn't Trust Your Memories, Would You Trust Your Choices? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 3023 oct. 202600:07:02

What if you couldn't fully trust your memories — but still had to decide what to do next?

Throughout our lives, we use memories to understand who we are, whom we trust, and what we believe is possible. Our past experiences help shape our choices. But what happens when the stories we rely on are incomplete, uncertain, or open to another interpretation?

In the Season 1 finale of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we bring together the central questions of memory, identity, consciousness, trust, and choice.

How much of the person you believe yourself to be is shaped by the memories you carry? Can you learn from the past without allowing it to control your future? And can you make meaningful choices without having absolute certainty about why you think and feel the way you do?

IN THIS EPISODE

• How memories shape the stories we tell about ourselves
• Why certainty doesn't always mean we have the complete picture
• The relationship between past experiences and present choices
• How to question old beliefs without dismissing your experiences
• What personal responsibility means when we don't control everything that shapes us
• Whether we can choose differently without resolving every question about the past

You don't need to distrust every memory. You don't need to solve every mystery about yourself.

Perhaps the goal is to become more thoughtful about what you believe, more open to what you may have misunderstood, and more willing to reconsider the stories that shape your life.

QUESTION FOR YOU

If you couldn't fully trust your memories, would you trust your choices?

Share your perspective in the episode poll or comments. There is no single answer — and sometimes the questions we ask ourselves matter as much as the answers we find.

What If You Remember Choosing Something You Never Chose? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2922 oct. 202600:06:31

What if you clearly remember making an important choice… but you never actually made it?

You remember the conversation. You remember your reasons. You remember the moment you decided to walk away, say no, or leave something behind.

But what if the choice you remember was never yours?

In Episode 29 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the unsettling relationship between memory, personal responsibility, and the choices we believe define us.

Imagine discovering evidence that contradicts a decision you have remembered for years. You were certain you made the choice yourself. You may have blamed yourself for it, defended it, or built your identity around it. But the evidence suggests that someone else made the decision — or that events unfolded very differently from the way you remember them.

What happens when a memory that shaped your life turns out to be unreliable?

IN THIS EPISODE

• How a remembered choice can shape your identity, even when the details are wrong
• Why a vivid memory is not the same as proof
• How we can carry guilt for decisions we may never have made
• What happens when evidence challenges the story we tell about ourselves
• Why the consequences of a mistaken memory can still be real
• Whether understanding the past can help us make different choices in the present

You don't need to doubt every memory. And discovering that a memory may be inaccurate doesn't erase everything you experienced afterward.

Perhaps the important question isn't only whether you made the choice you remember.

Perhaps it's also whether you are still allowing that memory to make choices for you.

QUESTION FOR YOU

If you discovered that a major choice you remember making was actually made by someone else, would it change how you see yourself?

How Much of Your Choice Is Actually Yours? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2818 oct. 202600:08:39

Think about the last important decision you made.

You probably had your reasons. You considered the possibilities, weighed the risks, and eventually chose what seemed right.

But how much of that decision was really yours?

In Episode 28 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the hidden influences behind our choices — the memories, fears, habits, and expectations that shape what we want and what we believe is possible.

Two people can face exactly the same opportunity and see completely different futures. One sees freedom. The other sees danger. Both believe they are responding to reality, but their past experiences may be shaping what they see.

Sometimes, a familiar reaction becomes a habit. A habit becomes part of our personality. And eventually, we stop questioning it. We simply say, "That's who I am."

But what if some of the choices we consider uniquely our own are actually patterns we learned long ago?

IN THIS EPISODE

• How past experiences influence present decisions
• Why the same opportunity can feel exciting to one person and dangerous to another
• How inherited expectations shape our desires
• When habits become so familiar that we mistake them for personality
• Why understanding a decision can change how we see ourselves
• Whether recognizing our influences can help us choose differently

You don't need to question every decision you make. And being influenced by your past doesn't mean your choices are meaningless.

Perhaps freedom isn't about making decisions untouched by experience.

Perhaps it begins when we recognize the influence of the past — and decide what role it should play in our future.

QUESTION FOR YOU

When you make a choice, are you expressing who you are — or repeating who you learned to be?

Did Your Memories Make the Choice for You? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2717 oct. 202600:05:24

Think about a decision you made recently.

You chose to trust someone. You turned down an opportunity. You stayed with what felt familiar instead of trying something new.

You probably had your reasons.

But how much of that decision belonged to the present — and how much came from your past?

In Episode 27 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the hidden relationship between memory and choice.

Our memories help us learn from mistakes, recognize danger, and understand the people around us. But they can also shape what feels safe, what seems possible, and what we are willing to risk.

A past betrayal can influence how we see someone new. A previous failure can make an opportunity feel impossible before we even try. Sometimes, a decision feels so natural that we never question where it came from.

We call it instinct. We call it experience. We tell ourselves we know what's right.

But what if a memory is influencing our choice in ways we don't fully recognize?

IN THIS EPISODE
• How past experiences influence present decisions
• Why familiar situations can feel safer than unfamiliar possibilities
• When memory helps us — and when it limits us
• How to distinguish present evidence from expectations shaped by the past
• Whether recognizing our influences can help us choose differently

You don't need to doubt every decision you make. Your memories contain valuable lessons, and experience matters.

But a situation that resembles an old mistake doesn't always have the same ending.

Perhaps freedom doesn't mean escaping the influence of the past. Perhaps it begins when we recognize that influence and decide what to do with it.

Your past is part of your story. But it doesn't have to write every next chapter.

QUESTION FOR YOU
Are you choosing what you genuinely want — or protecting yourself from something that happened before?

Did You Really Choose? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2617 oct. 202600:06:11

Think about a decision you made recently.

You considered your options. You made a choice. And you probably felt that the decision was yours.

But why did you choose that particular option?

Was it careful reasoning? A feeling you couldn't explain? A fear you didn't fully recognize? Or something you learned long before you ever faced that decision?

What if the influences behind your choices are not always visible to you?

In Episode 26 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore free will, personal responsibility, and the hidden influences that shape the decisions we make.

Our past experiences, habits, fears, and beliefs can affect what feels natural, safe, or right. Sometimes, we recognize those influences. Other times, we simply follow a familiar instinct and assume we know exactly why we acted as we did.

But does being influenced mean that we aren't free to choose?

And if our decisions are shaped by experiences we never chose in the first place, where does our freedom begin?

Perhaps freedom doesn't mean being completely independent of every influence. Perhaps it begins when we learn to recognize those influences, question them, and decide which ones deserve to guide us.

Still, one difficult question remains.

When you make a decision and feel certain that it was your own, does that feeling prove that it was?

In this episode, we explore:

• The hidden influences behind everyday decisions
• How past experiences and habits shape what feels right
• The difference between influence and control
• Whether understanding our motives can change how we see ourselves
• What it means for a choice to truly belong to us

You don't need to doubt every decision you make. But occasionally, it may be worth asking why one possibility felt inevitable while another seemed impossible.

Because perhaps the most difficult question isn't whether you had a choice.

It's whether you understand the person who made it.

What do you think? Are your choices truly your own, or are they shaped by influences you may never fully recognize?

What If Everyone Remembers the Same Event Differently? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2516 oct. 202600:08:08

Imagine that you and two other people witness the same event.

A few days later, you talk about it. One person remembers a sentence you don't remember hearing. Another insists that someone was angry. And you remember a detail that both of them say never happened.

Nobody seems to be lying. Everyone believes their memory is accurate.

What if everyone remembers the same event differently?

In Episode 25 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore what happens when people remember the same experience in different ways — and why conflicting memories don't necessarily mean that someone is lying.

Human memory isn't a perfect recording. Our attention, emotions, expectations, and interpretations influence what we remember and how we understand it.

Two people can experience the same conversation and come away with different impressions. Over time, those differences can change how they understand their relationships, their choices, and their shared past.

But what happens when everyone is convinced that their version is correct?

Does confidence make a memory more reliable? Should we trust the majority? And how do we distinguish between what we remember, what we believe, and what we can actually establish?

Sometimes, evidence can help us understand what happened. Sometimes, important details remain uncertain.

The challenge is to question our assumptions without automatically dismissing our own memories — and to listen to someone else's account without immediately accepting it as the truth.

If everyone remembers the same event differently, what would you trust?

When Does Trust Become Self-Deception? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2416 oct. 202600:05:06

Imagine continuing to trust someone even when something doesn't feel right.

You've noticed the broken promises. You've heard the explanations. Perhaps you've even begun to question what this person tells you.

But every time doubt appears, you find a reason to push it aside.

Maybe they were under pressure. Maybe you misunderstood. Maybe things will be different next time.

And slowly, the question changes.

Instead of asking whether you can trust this person, you begin asking yourself why you find it so difficult to stop.

When does trust become self-deception?

In Episode 24 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the moment when trust begins to protect our beliefs rather than reflect what we see.

Trust is not necessarily a mistake just because someone disappoints us. People make mistakes. They change. Sometimes, giving someone another chance is the right thing to do.

But what happens when the same pattern keeps repeating?

When every broken promise comes with another explanation, and every new doubt becomes something you feel compelled to dismiss, it may become difficult to distinguish loyalty from denial.

Perhaps the hardest part isn't discovering that someone has disappointed you.

Perhaps it's admitting that the evidence has been there for a while, and that you've been finding reasons not to accept it.

Because changing your mind about someone can mean questioning more than their honesty. It can mean questioning your own judgment, the choices you've made, and the story you've told yourself about the relationship.

How do you recognize the difference between giving someone another chance and refusing to see a pattern?

And when you continue trusting someone despite your doubts, what are you really trying to protect?

Can You Trust Someone Who Has Lied to You? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2315 oct. 202600:06:02

Imagine discovering that someone you trust has lied to you.

Not a stranger. Not someone you barely know. Someone whose words you've believed, whose explanations you've accepted, and perhaps whose honesty you've defended.

At first, the lie may seem small. Then you discover something else. And suddenly, you begin looking back at conversations that once seemed perfectly ordinary.

What else might not be true?

Can you trust someone who has lied to you?

In Episode 23 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore what happens when dishonesty changes the way we see another person.

Not every lie has the same meaning. Someone may lie out of fear or shame. Someone else may deliberately hide the truth to influence what you believe. Both have lied, but what happens afterward can reveal something important.

An apology may be sincere. Regret may be real. But words alone cannot always restore the trust that has been broken.

And the experience of being deceived can change more than one relationship. It can make ordinary silences feel suspicious and honest explanations harder to believe.

How do you protect yourself without allowing one person's lie to determine how you see everyone else?

Perhaps rebuilding trust begins not with believing someone again, but with paying attention to what they do next.

Can trust be rebuilt through actions, or does a lie change a relationship forever?

Can You Trust What You Feel? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2215 oct. 202600:05:04

Have you ever felt that something was wrong… even when everything seemed perfectly fine?

Someone smiles at you. They tell you everything is okay. Nothing seems unusual. But something about the moment feels different.

You can't explain it. You just have a feeling.

And then, days later, you discover that something really was being hidden from you.

Suddenly, you remember that feeling and think: I knew it.

But did you really know? Or does knowing how the story ends change the way you remember the beginning?

Can you trust what you feel?

In Episode 22 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we continue exploring trust by examining something deeply personal: our own emotions and instincts.

Imagine receiving a short message from someone you care about. One person reads it and feels reassured. Another reads exactly the same words and feels rejected.

The message hasn't changed. But its meaning has.

Perhaps an earlier betrayal has made someone more cautious. Perhaps the fear of losing a person makes an ordinary silence feel like a warning. A feeling becomes an explanation, and that explanation begins to look like evidence.

But feeling rejected doesn't necessarily mean someone has rejected you. Feeling guilty doesn't always mean you've done something wrong. And feeling certain doesn't mean you're right.

Our emotions can alert us to things we haven't consciously understood. They can also be influenced by memory, fear, and expectation.

The challenge isn't to ignore what you feel. It's to listen without immediately accepting every conclusion your feelings suggest.

A feeling can tell you where to look. It can't always tell you what you'll find.

What am I feeling — and what makes me believe it means what I think it means?

Perhaps that small pause can help you understand a situation before deciding what to believe.

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?

Written and created by Jonah Whitmore.

Can You Trust What You See? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2114 oct. 202600:05:41

Think about the last time you were absolutely sure you saw something.

You noticed a look, a gesture, or a movement. You made sense of it almost instantly. You didn't stop to question what it meant.

But what if seeing something and understanding it correctly aren't the same thing?

Can you trust what you see?

In Episode 21 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we begin a new chapter exploring trust by examining something we rely on every day: our own perception.

Imagine two people witnessing exactly the same scene. One sees anger. The other sees fear. One believes someone is hiding something. The other thinks they're simply distracted.

Neither person has to be lying. Both may genuinely believe what they saw.

So how can the same moment lead to two completely different conclusions?

Our brains constantly interpret the world around us. They recognize patterns, use context, and fill in missing details. Most of the time, this helps us navigate everyday life. But sometimes, our interpretations lead us somewhere the evidence doesn't support.

A brief glance becomes a sign of rejection. A shadow becomes something threatening. An incomplete observation becomes a story we're convinced is true.

And those stories can influence how we feel, how we treat other people, and what we choose to believe.

This isn't about distrusting everything you see. It's about recognizing the difference between what you actually observe and what you assume it means.

Because sometimes, the most convincing part of a mistaken belief is how certain it feels.

What did I actually observe — and what have I added to the story?

That small question might change the way you understand the world around you.

Are You Your Memories — or Something More? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 2013 oct. 202600:04:43

Think about the person you were ten years ago.

What did you believe back then? What were you afraid of? Who did you think you'd become?

Now think about the person you are today.

Some things have changed. And yet, you still call yourself by the same name. You feel that there's a connection between those two versions of you.

But what holds that connection together?

Are you your memories — or something more?

In Episode 20 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the relationship between memory, consciousness, and personal identity.

Our memories help us understand our past. They connect experiences, relationships, mistakes, and decisions into a story about who we are. But memories can be incomplete. People can remember the same event differently. And sometimes, the person we believe we used to be isn't quite the person we are today.

So what makes us the same person across time?

Is it our personal history? Our personality? The choices we make? Or the way we continue to experience the world, even as our understanding of ourselves changes?

Imagine someone knew every important event in your life. Every relationship, every mistake, every moment that changed you.

Would that mean they truly knew you?

Or would they still need to see what you do next?

Perhaps our past helps explain who we've been. But our lives are still unfolding. We can question what we believe, change the way we treat others, and make choices our younger selves never expected.

There are no easy answers. Just one question worth sitting with:

If your memories explain who you've been, what reveals who you are?

Could a Mind Exist Without a Past? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1913 oct. 202600:04:45

Imagine waking up tomorrow and realizing you can't remember your life.

You know you're here. You can think, feel, and experience the world around you. But your childhood is gone. You don't remember the people you've loved, the choices you've made, or the experiences that shaped you.

Would you still be you?

In Episode 19 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore a strange possibility: a mind that can experience the present but has lost access to its personal past.

Imagine meeting someone who says they've loved you for twenty years. They remember your life together. You remember nothing.

Could you love them again? Would your identity survive the loss of your memories? And if you began building a new life, would that make you a different person?

Memory helps us connect our experiences across time. But is remembering your past the same thing as being conscious? And is the person you are today defined entirely by the story you can remember?

Perhaps our past gives us a sense of continuity. Perhaps identity is also shaped by how we respond to the present, the choices we make, and the experiences still waiting for us.

There are no easy answers here. Just a thought experiment that raises a deeply personal question:

If your past disappeared, what would remain of you?

WHAT MAKES YOU THE SAME PERSON EVERY DAY? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1711 oct. 202600:09:41

What makes you the same person every day?

Adrian keeps making promises to be more patient, more present, and more understanding. He means every one of them. So why does he keep acting like a different person when the day gets difficult?

When his daughter points out the different versions of him she sees, Adrian starts wondering what really connects the person he is in the morning with the person he becomes by evening.

In Episode 17 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, Jonah Whitmore explores the changing self, consciousness, and the question of what makes us the same person across time.

We don't always feel the same. We don't always think clearly. And sometimes we look back at our own words and wonder why we said them.

Does that mean we've changed into someone else? Or is being a person more complicated than we like to admit?

COULD YOU BE CONSCIOUS WITHOUT YOUR MEMORIES? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1610 oct. 202600:04:43

Could you be conscious without your memories?

Imagine waking up with no memory of your childhood, your relationships, or the person you used to be.

You can still see. You can still hear. You can still experience the present moment.

But if your past disappeared, would you still be you?

In Episode 16 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the relationship between memory, personal identity, and consciousness.

We often think of memory as the foundation of who we are. It connects our experiences, explains our choices, and gives us a story about ourselves. But is the story of your life the same thing as the experience of being alive?

You don't need to remember your entire past to experience the present. A moment can happen before you've had time to turn it into a memory.

And losing access to personal memories is not automatically the same as losing all conscious experience.

So what does memory actually give us? Does it create our sense of self, preserve an identity that already exists, or help us make sense of something more complicated?

One final question: If your past disappeared, would you still feel like you were here?

IF YOUR PAST CHANGED, WOULD YOU BECOME SOMEONE ELSE? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1509 oct. 202600:05:22

What if your past had been different?

Would you still be the same person?

A single conversation. A decision you almost made. Someone you met by chance. An experience you barely remember.

Small moments can change the direction of a life. But what happens when you imagine a past in which those moments never happened?

Would you have the same personality? The same fears? The same beliefs about other people? Would you still love the same things, make the same choices, or recognize yourself in the person you became?

In Episode 15 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore how the past shapes identity — and whether a different history could create a different version of you.

Perhaps the person you are today was shaped by experiences that could easily have gone another way. Perhaps even the smallest change could have led you toward a life you would barely recognize.

But there's a deeper question.

If your experiences had been different, would the real you still exist beneath them? Or is the person you call yourself inseparable from everything that happened?

Our past matters. It shapes how we see the world, how we respond to other people, and what we believe is possible. But it doesn't necessarily determine every part of who we become. We are also shaped by how we respond to what happens to us.

And that leaves us with an unsettling possibility: the person you might have been could be closer to you than you think.

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? is a psychological fiction podcast by Jonah Whitmore exploring memory, identity, consciousness, trust, and choice.

Because sometimes the hardest question isn't whether your past could have been different.

It's whether you would still recognize yourself if it had been.

WHAT IF YOUR PERSONALITY WAS BUILT ON FALSE MEMORIES? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1409 oct. 202600:04:54

What if the memories that explain your personality aren't true?

Think about how you describe yourself.

“I've never been good at trusting people.”

“I always expect things to go wrong.”

“I know why I'm like this.”

We often connect our personality to moments from our past. Someone disappointed us. Someone left. Someone helped us when we needed it most.

We remember what happened, and we build an explanation around it.

But what if the memory behind that explanation is wrong?

Imagine a man who has spent his entire life believing he cannot trust anyone because someone abandoned him as a child.

Then he discovers that the person he remembers waiting for actually came back.

The memory was incomplete. The story he built around it may have been wrong.

Does that change who he is?

Not necessarily. Our personalities are shaped by many things: habits, relationships, biology, experiences, and the choices we make.

But memories can give our behavior a meaning. And sometimes, the explanation we believe about ourselves becomes a part of our identity.

What happens when that explanation falls apart?

Maybe you discover that the past wasn't exactly what you thought it was.

Maybe you begin to question the reasons behind your fears, your habits, and the decisions you keep making.

And maybe you realize that understanding where you came from doesn't mean your past has to determine where you go next.

Because there's a difference between remembering something and knowing what it means.

If the memories that explain your personality turned out to be false, would you still trust the person you believe yourself to be?

Or would you finally give yourself permission to become someone else?

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?

or the person you might still become?

IF YOU LOST YOUR MEMORIES, WOULD YOU STILL BE YOU? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1309 oct. 202600:06:16

If you lost your memories, would you still be you?

Imagine waking up in a hospital.

You know your name. But you don't recognize the woman beside your bed.

She tells you she's your wife.

She remembers the day you met, the promises you made, and the life you built together.

You remember nothing.

To her, you're still the same person. To yourself, you're a stranger.

Now imagine discovering a notebook you wrote before the accident.

Inside, you find a confession.

I can't keep living like this.

She thinks I'm happy. I'm not.

You don't remember writing those words. You don't remember feeling that way.

But everyone tells you that person was you.

What are you supposed to do with a past you can't remember?

Your wife wants the man she loved to come back.

But what if you don't want to become that man again?

What if you're calmer now? More patient. Different in ways you actually like?

Does losing your memories give you the right to start over?

Or are you still responsible for the promises you made and the people you hurt?

Forgetting what you did doesn't mean it never happened.

And remembering who you used to be doesn't necessarily mean you should become that person again.

We often explain ourselves through our past.

“That's just who I am.”

“I've always been this way.”

But what if the memories that tell you who you are suddenly disappear?

Would you still be responsible for your old choices?

Would you still owe people the same promises?

Maybe identity isn't something we simply carry through life. Maybe we keep rebuilding it through our actions, relationships, and choices.

But other people remember the person you used to be.

They remember the promises. The pain. The future they believed you would share.

You may feel like a new person.

They may still be waiting for the old one to return.

So here's the question:

If you lost every memory of who you used to be, would you still owe the world the same person?

Or would you have the right to decide who you become next?

DOES YOUR MEMORY MAKE YOU WHO YOU ARE? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1208 oct. 202600:04:06

If your memories disappeared tomorrow, would you still be you?

Think about the person you were ten years ago.

You probably remember some of it.

Where you lived.

Who you were close to.

What you wanted.

Maybe there are things you did back then that you would never do now.

And yet, when someone asks about that person, you say:

“That was me.”

But what creates that connection?

Your body?

Your personality?

Your memories?

Or the story in your mind that says:

I was there.

That happened to me.

That was my life.

Now imagine something strange.

You keep all your memories.

Every photograph.

Every conversation you can remember.

Every important moment.

But your personality changes.

Your fears are different.

Your tastes are different.

The things you care about are different.

You still remember your entire life.

But you no longer recognize the person you used to be.

Would you still be you?

Or would you be someone completely different who simply happens to remember your life?

And now go the other way.

Imagine you lose your memories.

But something inside you remains.

You still laugh at the same kind of jokes.

You still get nervous in the same situations.

You still make the same strange little choices.

Someone tells you:

“You used to love this song.”

You don't remember it.

But when it starts playing…

you smile.

If your memories disappear, but something inside you remains…

was memory ever the whole of you?

Maybe we don't discover who we are through memory.

Maybe we create who we are by remembering.

Think about the stories you tell about your own life.

“I was always like this.”

“I've never trusted people.”

“That experience changed me.”

“This is why I am the way I am.”

Those stories can feel like facts.

But they are also interpretations.

And every time we remember something, we may be telling the story again.

A little differently.

Maybe memory becomes part of identity…

and then identity changes the way we remember it.

Which comes first?

The person?

Or the story about the person?

I don't know if there is a clean answer.

And maybe that's the uncomfortable part.

So here's the question:

If every memory you have helps explain who you are…

does that mean your memories make you who you are?

Or are you the person who decides what those memories mean?

WHO ARE YOU WITHOUT YOUR MEMORIES? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1107 oct. 202600:04:19

Who are you without your memories?

Imagine waking up tomorrow and discovering that everything from your past is gone.

Your childhood.

Your relationships.

Your greatest moments.

Your regrets.

Everything that made you feel like yourself.

Other people can tell you who you were.

They can show you photographs.

They can give you evidence.

They can describe your entire life.

But there is one thing missing.

You don't remember living it.

In Episode 11 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, Jonah Whitmore explores one of the deepest questions about identity:

If your memories disappear, does the person you were disappear with them?

What makes you the same person over time?

Your body?

Your personality?

Your memories?

Or something else?

Because maybe identity is not just about what happened to us.

Maybe it is about the story we carry inside our own minds.

And if that story disappears…

who is left?

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? is a psychological thriller podcast by Jonah Whitmore about memory, identity, consciousness, choice, and trust.

It's whether you would still recognize yourself without the past that created you.

HOW MUCH OF YOUR MEMORY IS ACTUALLY YOURS? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 1006 oct. 202600:04:37

How much of your memory is actually yours?

Imagine remembering something for twenty years.

You know where you were.
You remember the people.
You remember what happened.

Then someone shows you evidence that says it never happened that way.

What do you trust?

Your memory?

Or the evidence?

In Episode 10 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, Jonah Whitmore explores one of the strangest questions about memory and identity:

What if a memory can change without you knowing?

A detail disappears.
Another becomes clearer.
Someone else's version becomes part of your own.

And eventually, you may have a memory that feels completely yours…

without knowing where all of it came from.

But there is an even harder question.

If one of your important memories turned out to be wrong, would it change who you are?

What if your future self could warn you?

Imagine waking up tomorrow and finding a message from yourself ten years in the future.

One sentence:

“Don’t make the same mistake I made.”

Would you believe it?

And if you did… would you listen?

In Episode 9 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, Jonah Whitmore explores a psychological thought experiment about the future, identity, choice, and trust.

If your future self knew exactly what was going to happen to you, would you want to know?

What if changing one decision erased the future that sent the warning?

And what if some mistakes have to happen before we can become the person we eventually are?

What If Your Identity Is Built on a Memory That Never Happened? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 805 oct. 202600:03:42

What if one of the memories that made you who you are never actually happened?

Think about a memory you know by heart.

A conversation.

A moment from childhood.

Something someone said to you.

A moment that changed the way you see yourself.

Now imagine discovering that your memory is wrong.

Not one detail.

The whole thing.

The conversation never happened.

The person wasn't there.

Maybe the event itself never happened at all.

But you still remember it.

And maybe that memory helped shape your life.

It influenced who you trusted.

Who you avoided.

The choices you made.

The person you became.

So what happens when you discover that the memory you built part of your identity around... wasn't real?

Here's the strange part:

A memory can be false and still change your life.

The event wasn't real.

But your fear was.

Your decision was.

The relationship that followed was real.

Everything that happened afterward was real.

So maybe a false memory doesn't have to be true to become part of who you are.

Now imagine you could erase it.

You could replace the false memory with the truth.

But what if changing the memory changed you too?

Would you choose the truth?

Or would you keep the memory because, true or not, it helped make you who you became?

And if a false memory can become part of your identity...

what would you trust?

Your memory?

The evidence?

Or the person you've become?

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? is a series of short psychological thought experiments about memory, identity, consciousness, choice, and trust.

Each episode explores a simple question that can become surprisingly difficult once you start thinking about it.

Memory or Evidence: Which One Do You Trust? | WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 704 oct. 202600:04:49

We trust our memories because they feel like evidence.

A conversation you remember.
A moment you can replay.
A detail you are certain happened exactly the way you see it.

But what if your memory is wrong?

What would you trust more — the memory inside your own mind, or the evidence that proves something different?

Because memory is not a perfect recording of the past. Every time we remember something, our brain reconstructs it. It fills gaps. It changes details. It creates a version of events that feels real.

And sometimes that version can be completely different from what actually happened.

So what happens when your memories and the evidence disagree?

Do you trust what you experienced?

Do you trust what can be proven?

Or do you trust the explanation that feels most believable?

Because the hardest truths to accept are often not the ones we don't know...

They are the ones that challenge what we already believe.

And if you can't completely trust your own memories...

what can you truly trust?

Why Does Your Brain Create False Memories? — Season 1: WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 603 oct. 202600:02:28

Why Does Your Brain Create False Memories?

We trust our memories because they feel real.

A childhood room. A conversation. A face. A moment you can see so clearly that you never think to question it.

But memory isn't a recording. Every time we remember something, our brain reconstructs it. And sometimes, that reconstruction can become something that feels like a memory of an event that never happened.

So what happens when a memory is wrong?

Maybe the mistake doesn't matter.

But what if that memory changed the way you see yourself? What if it changed who you trusted, what you feared, or what you believed happened to you?

Because memories don't just tell us about the past. They help create the story of who we are.

And if your brain can create a memory that never happened...

what else do you trust simply because it feels true?

Our brains constantly interpret information, fill in gaps, and connect details. Most of the time, this helps us navigate the world. But sometimes, an assumption becomes a memory. An interpretation becomes a fact. And something we believe with complete confidence may not be entirely true.

What happens when you question your own perception?

How do you distinguish a memory from an interpretation? And when your mind tells you one thing but the evidence suggests another, which do you trust?

This isn't just a question about memory. It's a question about identity, evidence, and the stories we tell ourselves.

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? is a psychological podcast about memory, identity, consciousness, choice, and the uncertain boundary between experience and reality.

What If Your Most Important Memory Never Happened? — Season 1: WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 401 oct. 202600:03:05

What if the memory that shaped your entire life never happened?

Not a childhood detail.
Not a forgotten conversation.

Your most important memory.

The one that explains who you are, what you fear, who you love, and why you made certain choices.

We tend to think of memory as a recording. Something happens. Your brain stores it. Years later, you simply play it back.

But memory doesn't work that way.

Every time you remember something, your brain reconstructs it.

A memory can feel vivid, emotional, and completely real — while still containing details that changed, details that were added, or even details that never happened.

Now imagine something more disturbing.

What if one particular memory became the foundation of your identity?

Maybe you remember the day someone betrayed you.

Maybe you remember the moment you lost someone.

Maybe you remember something your parents told you when you were a child.

Maybe you remember the exact moment you decided what kind of person you would become.

You have carried that memory for years.

You have told the story.

You have explained it to other people.

It feels like evidence.

But what if the event happened differently?

Or what if the event never happened at all?

If your most important memory turned out to be false, would you still be the same person?

Would your fears still make sense?

Would your relationships feel the same?

Would you make the same choices?

And perhaps the most disturbing question of all:

If a false memory helped create the person you became, does it still matter that it was false?

This is WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?

And if your most important memory disappeared tomorrow…

would you still know who you are?

WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST? — Episode 3: Can You Trust a Memory That Feels Completely Real?30 sept. 202600:02:44

You remember it.

The room.
The conversation.
The feeling.

You know it happened.

But what if someone showed you evidence that it never did?

Would you trust your memory because it feels completely real?
Or would you trust the evidence in front of you?

In Episode 3 of WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?, we explore the unsettling possibility that a memory can feel completely real — and still be wrong.

What happens when a memory has influenced your relationships, your decisions, and even your sense of who you are?

And what if changing just one memory could create a slightly different version of you?

There may be no way to know.

So when memory and evidence disagree...

What would you trust?

Your memory?
Or the evidence?

This is WHAT WOULD YOU TRUST?
