Discussion Topics
•Disclaimer: Why I don’t believe in resumes, but understand that they are still an essential part of the hiring process for 95% of organizations. I believe personal brand via various social media platforms are more significant in today’s job market (especially in DeFi, Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, NFTs
•Recruiters aren’t reading your full resume line by line, so its time to start focusing on the areas that they are reading and making them standout.
•I don’t see the need to have a resume longer than 2 pages. It seems like overkill and recruiters and hiring managers are probably not reading it
•If you don’t have crypto experience it is best to put a highlight of qualifications at the top of your resume, along with training / education and then place the non-crypto related work experience next
•Take as many crypto compliance courses as you can to showcase on you resume (mentioned: Chainalysis, Ciphertrace, Confirm, Solidus labs, Elliptic/ ManchesterCF, Anchain.ai
•Put a proper naming convention on your resume. (i.e. Stephen Sargeant_Resume) and something that is relevant to your name
•If your resume is format heavy it is best to make sure its submitted as a .pdf versus in word format, that way the formatting is not lost when downloaded or opened
•Highlight achievements that may differ than the average candidate. Have you contributed to working groups or with international organizations (mentioned: Interpol, Project Participate, Europol, UNODC)
•Don’t take my word for it, spend the time and money and invest in a career coach and / or professional resume writer, as it could change how much compensation you get (mentioned: Clementine Crooks, Lama Younes, Nelu Sund)
•Find time to spend time gaining experience working on projects within the industry to add some life to you resume and to support your industry and community (mentioned: Malcolm Wright / ATII)
•Use the same name on your resume, application submissions and on your LinkedIn. Also make sure that your LinkedIn and resume have the same work experience, etc.

Ep. 20 (Season 2): Nobody Is Going To Take A Chance ON You Without A Connection
Season 2
lundi 24 janvier 2022 • Duration 10:58
Welcome to the episode 20 of the 2nd season of “WE WERE ON A BREAK” - Ross Voice. The series where the host, Stephen Brent Sargeant (Compliance Consultant to Bitfinex) talks to industry professionals during the CoronaVirus (COVID-19) quarantine and gains industry insights and expertise. Although the LinkedIn algorithm won’t have you believe this, there are very few recruiters or hiring manager that will take a chance on a professional who doesn’t meet the minimum requirements for the job, without there being some connection via a third party or an existing professional relationship.
Youtube - https://lnkd.in/dNY6ACmC
In this episode the host, Stephen Brent Sargeant discusses how to make better connections to be given those career opportunities even though you don’t have the exact skills that the job requires. Armed with this information, you can spend more of your time building meaningful connections instead of just sending your resume to the black hole of AWS systems and recruiters who are managing multiple openings at a time.

Discussion Topics:
•The amazing stories on LinkedIn of a recruiter or hiring manager taking a chance on random professionals is not the norm and are usually strategically placed by the author to game the algorithm to get more exposure
•Having a connection makes a huge difference and its always great if a connection can vouch for your skills, work ethic or easy to manage personality (mentioned: Carol Stewart and Rodney MacInnes)
•Recruiters are not going to send a tonne of unqualified professionals to the client for them to consider. This negates exactly what the recruiter is there for, which is to find talented individuals that best suit the position
•Companies don’t have the time, resources or money to just keep taking chances on people and its expensive to train professionals that they are taking the chance on
•Go out and meet more professionals and make sure you stand out either in-person or via video or audio format (i.e. blogs, podcasts, video explainers)
•Would you take a chance on you ?? Have you added any value to your professional network or built meaningful connections or have you just been asking everyone you know if they have a job for you
•Look for opportunities, not jobs. Opportunities multiply so much that the jobs will come to you if you are adding value (ie. volunteering at events or with newsletters etc.)
•Nobody is just going to blindly refer you to the job if they don’t have an existing relationship with you or know someone who does.

Ep 16 (Season 2): Is The Crypto Company You Are Applying To Legit??
Season 2
vendredi 7 janvier 2022 • Duration 16:52
Welcome to the episode 16 of the 2nd season of “WE WERE ON A BREAK” - Ross Voice. The series where the host, Stephen Brent Sargeant (Compliance Consultant to Bitfinex) talks to industry professionals during the CoronaVirus (COVID-19) quarantine and gains industry insights and expertise. After my post about the crypto compliance job market yesterday, I got the following great questions:
What kind of due diligence candidates should do before joining companies?
Do you think just focusing on the funding a company received is a main factor in that decision?
With crypto companies being so new in the market and coming up with multiple products, how does a candidate make a call on this?
In this session, Stephen shares his insights on how to spot red flag with crypto employers and describes some of the best practices for researching crypto companies legitimacy and creditability. Joining a new startup is scary as it is, listen to this episode to avoid common pitfalls .
Mentioned in this episode: Breadcrumbs, Amber Scott, Circle Impact, Peter Warrack

Discussion Topics:
It’s all in the approach
•Random linkedin message without using your name / or telling you anything about the job
•Was it through a recruiter – is that recruiter reputable in the space
•Did the message seem spammy and they are slow to reply if you respond
Research The company
•Look for redflags
oAre they offering products without a compliance program
oDo they have existing Compliance program / policies procedures
oCheck their Terms of Service do they mention anything about AML or is it a very vague and general statement
oHigh turnover
oNegative media
oAre they in regulatory turmoil
oDid the company start after the bull run (conferences in 2017)
oSpeak to current and former employees and master connectors in the industry
Does this company fit what you want
•Remember the dream job requirements challenge amber gave me – does this position meet your requirements
oIf you growth and exposure you may go to a smaller company with a smaller team reporting directly to CCO/CAMLO
oIf you are looking to effect societal change than maybe companies like Circle with Circle Impact might be more appealing to you
oIf you want to travel – working for international organization or remote opportunities where travel may be more regular etc
Show Me The Money!! Maybe!
•Be weary of companies that are offering you way above average salary – there is usually some internal / external issues
•A company having capital is important / however you may be able to get in and get equity before the next raise and have some long term upside
•If you are a one man/woman show make sure you are well compensated as your duties will be big and its your reputation on the line
Don’t listen to me or anyone else
•Go with your gut / you always get a feeling when something doesn’t seem right
•Ask a lot of questions in the interviews around the things that matter to you (i.e culture etc.)
•Don’t be desperate or take shortcuts just for the sake of getting a job

Discussion Topics:
The state of the crypto compliance job market
•The great resignation – Does it really exist ???
•People just have more options
•Even if you hated your job before / wfh / and the extra leniency and less pressure makes that somewhat shitty job look real good
•People are going to be leaving jobs they really like, just because there are so many more opportunities and new niches like nfts, dao and defi to explore
What professionals with blockchain investigations experience or advanced practical experience need to know
•You got options – you are in short supply – push your chest out and walk around like the peacock you are
•Be weary of the high paying shit shows --- yes you know which ones I’m talking about. Operating in major markets without a solid compliance program
oOr the ones too busy to write a job description
•You have options – find a place that you will actually enjoy working and where you feel there is room to grow or be connected with mentors / like minded professionals
•Work with recruiters – yes i know very bias of me to say
•Look at emerging blockchain companies that haven’t built out their compliance department but have raised a tonne of money (start connecting before positions are posted)
•Stop lacking confidence – just because what you are doing doesn’t feel that hard or complex, your skillset is still in high demand
•Dog years – 1 year crypto is like 7 in traditional compliance – use that to your advantage
•Look into opportunities to provide consulting / advisory work on adhoc or equity exchange
•Remember you got the chips – you are interviewing these companies
What professionals without blockchain investigations experience or advanced practical experience need to know
•This reminds me of 4 years ago when i started – enthusiasm is really the only barrier
•Network with your blockchain buddies – many know of jobs that aren’t posted or have a good idea of who has approached them for jobs and might be able to help
•Grab some quick certifications / or attack youtube aggressively
•Apply even if you don’t have certs / strong traditional skills are still in high demand
•Check out my post on how to be job ready for less than $250 – and take a vacation week off and bang out everything that week
•Confidence is key – stop worrying that you have no experience – you should be able to learn how to conduct an investigation on the blockchain via various courses – just explain what you would do in that position
•Although its not impossible – not everyone is going to transition at same pay / seniority as current traditional job
•My thought process is start early in some place where you like the team and think you can get most exposure to different compliance functions and other departments / that experience will pay dividends in pay later on
•Get paid in crypto and live beneath you means / stack equity
What companies need to know
•It’s a candidates market and your thoughts around compensation and work experience really don’t mean anything if you can’t find anyone to fill your roles
oUse house and bidding wars example
•Spend more time and resources investing in your current employees – they are your best recruiters
oMany professionals may entice their traditional peers to want to take the leap – if you employee feels like they are part of a good company
•This includes developing ways to give your current employees more exposure
oLeading or attending events /meetings
oWorking groups with international law enforcement etc
oTraining / speaking / thought leadership opportunities
oCompensation
•Pay a premium for great fits and professionals with positive mindsets
oYou just don’t need someone filing SARS
oYou need them to identify typologies / create reports / make connections with industry peers etc
•Don’t sleep – many companies did not take a break during the holidays from hiring – that luxury doesn’t exist
•Stop with the grueling 4-5 touchpoint interviews
