Raising Informed Citizens with Lindsey Cormack23 Sep 202400:40:59

Send me a Text Message about the show!

In this episode, I interview Lindsey Cormack, associate professor of political science and director of the diplomacy lab at Stevens Institute of Technology, and author of "How to Raise a Citizen."

We discuss the importance of teaching children about politics and civic engagement. Lindsey explains that civics education is often deprioritized in schools, leading to a lack of understanding among adults. She emphasizes the need for parents to take on the responsibility of teaching their children about citizenship and government.

Lindsey outlines five key skills that children should learn:
-how to register to vote,
-the difference between primary and general elections,
-understanding federalism,
-reading the constitution,
-and being comfortable with having hard conversations.

We also touch on the misconceptions around the United States being a democracy versus a constitutional republic.

From understanding the basics of government structure to the importance of voting and critical thinking, this episode is packed with insights and actionable advice. Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply someone looking to become a better citizen, this conversation is a must-listen.  I certainly learned A LOT!

A Conversation on Gun Violence with "Last Day" Podcast Host, Stephanie Wittels Wachs18 Apr 202200:50:58

Send me a Text Message about the show!

The Two Jesses, prior to this conversation with Stephanie Wittels Wachs, would have both told you guns are bad. Full stop. But Stephanie has traveled from Montana to Atlanta in search of answers- and they have left her with more questions, and an anger for the system that has pitted us against each other, in a place with zero social net to take care of those who need support with mental health.

Throughout the interviews Stephanie holds with the families who have been changed fundamentally by a gun ending the life of their loved ones, she wonders about the purpose of a gun- and whether or not the gun, in and of itself, is fundamentally bad.

An important conversation, clarifying, and really smart. Check out Stephanie on https://lemonadamedia.com/show/lastday/ to learn more about her work around the opioid epidemic, gun violence and how we can help support the mental health crisis that is taking place in America.

We Should Talk About WHY there are NO Girls on the Internet with Podcaster Bridget Todd11 Apr 202200:45:28

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Award winning podcaster, Bridget Todd, sits down with The Two Jess(es) to talk about how marginalized people show up online, and how disinformation (purposely spreading incorrect information to further one's agenda) and misinformation (spreading inaccurate information with no intention of causing harm) is really a racial, gender, justice and democratic issue.

Bridget created her critically acclaimed podcast, “There Are No Girls On The Internet” to explore how marginalized people show up online in response to the lack of diversity in conversations around social media platforms and misinformation.  There is no shortage of conversation points as Bridget shares openly about her own experiences with dis- & mis- information as a woman, and particular a woman of color.  Bridget shares about what it means to be a good steward of the internet and how critically important it is to us as a society to slow down, take a beat, and ownership considering what could be true and what could be false, and how we share both with our communities.

Meet Bridget!

Bridget Todd is a frequently cited expert, trainer, and speaker on combating disinformation, conspiracy theories, and extremism online advocating for social media platform accountability. Creating safer digital experiences for women and other marginalized people as well as celebrating and amplifying marginalized people’s contributions to tech and the internet is what caused Bridget to create her critically acclaimed podcast There Are No Girls on the Internet to explore how marginalized people show up online in response to the lack of inclusion in conversations around the internet.

Finding Your Unicorn Space and Why You Should Give Yourself Consistent Permission to be Unavailable with NYT Bestselling Author of "Fair Play": Eve Rodsky28 Mar 202200:48:19

Send me a Text Message about the show!

According to studies conducted throughout the course of the pandemic, mothers were able to complete ONE hour of work during lockdown, as opposed to their male counterparts, who were able to complete THREE hours of uninterrupted work.  New York Time's Bestselling author of Fair Play and now, Find Your Unicorn Space: Reclaim Your Creative Life in a Too Busy World, Eve Rodsky, is working to change society, one partnership at a time by coming up with a new 21st-century solution to an age-old problem: women shouldering 2/3 or more of the unpaid domestic work and childcare for their homes and families.

In this episode, The Two Jess(es) sit down with Eve and talk about how WeSTAT has been the Unicorn Space that has saved them, one they didn't even know they needed. Together with Eve, they talk about the unapologetic carving out of sustained time to pursue creative work- and how it is THE way to keep from languishing in the deluge of the daily grind of motherhood life.

Meet Eve:
Eve Rodsky transformed a “blueberries breakdown” into a catalyst for social change when she applied her Harvard-trained background in organizational management to ask the simple yet profound question: What would happen if we treated our homes as our most important organizations? Her New York Times bestselling book and Reese’s Book Club Pick, Fair Play, a gamified life-management system that helps partners rebalance their domestic workload and reimagine their relationship, has elevated the cultural conversation about the value of unpaid labor and care. In her highly anticipated follow-up, Find Your Unicorn Space: Reclaim Your Creative Life in a Too-Busy World, Rodsky explores the cross-section between the science of creativity, productivity, and resilience. Described as the ‘antidote to physical, mental, and emotional burno

The Anatomy of Anxiety and Understanding Our Body's Fear Response with Dr. Ellen Vora21 Mar 202200:51:22

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Jess and Jess are both very familiar with anxiety. But is it true anxiety or false anxiety? Or is it both, at the same time? Dr. Ellen Vora, holistic psychiatrist and acupuncturist, takes a functional medicine approach to her patients when they come to her with anxiety symptoms. Dr. Vora maintains that oftentimes we feel anxiety symptoms because there is something out of alignment within our bodies. She starts with asking questions about food, sleep, hormone balancing, and the like- and more often than not, anxious states of being can be leveled out by practicing good sleep hygiene, taking gluten out of the diet, getting off birth control or leveling out blood sugar.
A thoughtful conversation about anxiety as a cue to the deeper parts of our body, mind and spirit that need us to prioritize our attention on what matters most.

Meet Dr. Ellen!
ELLEN VORA, MD, is a holistic psychiatrist, acupuncturist, and yoga teacher. She takes a functional medicine approach to mental health—considering the whole person and addressing imbalance at the root. Dr. Vora received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Columbia University, and she is board-certified in psychiatry and integrative holistic medicine. She lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.

WeSTAT Goes LIVE...with an Audience! A Conversation on Female Friendships with 50 of our Closest Friends!14 Mar 202201:01:52

Send me a Text Message about the show!

This episode has been TWO YEARS  in the making! When Jess and Jess started WeSTAT, their vision was to hold live recordings in their community where their audience and supporters could attend, and be involved in the conversation- and then the pandemic hit.
Finally, after so many pivots and plan changes, TTJ(es) were able to hold their FIRST of what they hope will be MANY live podcast recordings with an actual audience...of REAL PEOPLE- not just over a computer screen!
The topic of conversation for the evening was FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS, and it turns out- JessK doesn't consider JessB her friend (what??) and that the audience members had a whole lot to contribute to the conversation.
Same Jess and Jess- lots of laughter and round and round question asking, but a very different vibe with really thoughtful contributions from the audience, as well as hard questions.

This episode is a conversation starter for any woman who has friends, struggled with friends, wants more friends, wants fewer friends, and that's just the beginning!

Why Women are OBSESSED with True Crime with #1 True Crime Podcast Host, Sam Walker07 Mar 202200:52:34

Send me a Text Message about the show!

The Two Jess(es) get the chance to sit down with UK's #1 True Crime Podcast Host, Sam Walker- and ask her All The Things. Sam hosts the 12-episode series where she interviews KC — a U.S. military veteran turned American Vigilante — as he shares elaborate stories about his time over the last 20 years as a real life vigilante for hire — everything from saving abducted children, rescue missions and more. KC is a hugely complex, intelligent, contradictory man who stands on the blurred line between right and wrong, between revenge and redemption, and Sam lets Jess and Jess in a bit behind the scenes on her over 50 hours of interviews with this man she has never met, and really can't see.

While this episode centers around Sam's podcast, the real theme is pondering the fascination almost EVERY woman has with true crime stories. Is it because it makes us feel safer, watching something terrible happen to someone else? Or is it because it makes us feel smarter?

If you are a woman that is obsessed with true crime, this is an episode you will surely appreciate.

Meet Sam Walker!
Sam Walker is a multi-award winning journalist, broadcaster and podcaster. As a host, Sam appeared across national commercial and BBC Radio in the UK for nearly two decades, working for stations as varied as BBC Radio Manchester, Key 103, where she was the first women to host a daytime show, Real Radio, where she was the first woman to anchor a morning show,  and national news and speech station BBC Radio 5 Live, where she presented for eight years before moving to the USA in 2019. She is currently the host of the award-winning Sam Walker’s Desert Diaries podcast, which also airs weekly on BBC Radio, and the critically acclaimed American Vigilante. Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus, who wrote her PhD thesis on vibrators and women, is bringing all the things when it comes to what she says is the most underused tool in a woman's sexual tool kit.

So what are you waiting for? This episode is filled with awesome information, a lot of laughter, and good, good questions.

Meet Dr. Bat Sheva!

The Absurdity of Pandemic Parenting, Cognitive Dissonance and Screaming in Parking Lots with Author, Melinda Wenner Moyer21 Feb 202200:37:15

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Pandemic Parenting  is now a buzzword, a style of parenting even- a thing those with children at home, especially young ones- are still trying to figure out how to navigate and survive. We are emotionally fatigued- we are so tired, and we are all out of words for how to describe it even. So a collective of women outside of Boston decided to get together and stand in a parking lot and collectively scream. And Melinda Wenner Moyer has written about it in her Atlantic article: Covid Parenting Has Passed the Point of Absurdity which signaled a simultaneous scream of understanding.
As Jess and Jess continue to focus on self-care for the month of February- giving space to this important conversation, whether it includes words or not, feels vitally important to address. What do we do when we just have run out of steam? When we just don't have the words to explain how we are feeling, and we can't seem to find the strength to do the mental gymnastics of who can go where and when and wondering if that sore throat or runny nose means we should isolate or quarantine?
While there's not a whole lot of advice in this one, there is space for the collective understanding and non-judgmental commiseration.

Spa World: Loving Our Naked Bodies on Valentine's Day14 Feb 202200:32:18

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Happy Valentine's Day! Jess and Jess have taken their business partnership to the next level. In an effort to really "walk the talk" of Self-Care February, TTJ(es) decide to visit their local Korean spa in search of research, relaxation, and facing some deep seeded public nudity fears.
Why? Well, because it's fun. Or was it? Jess and Jess give a very detailed account of their visit from the horrible prison uniform, to scrubbing down in a shower room with total strangers- to having to pick rice out of their cleavage.
Do they feel better about their naked bodies after this experience? And is it awkward now that they have seen each other naked?
You'll have to listen to find out!

The Sound of Women's Voices15 Apr 202400:48:10

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Did you know that the  six most common complaints about the sound of a women's voice are:

  • Their voice is too high
  • They sound like children
  • They don't sound authoritative enough
  • They have vocal fry
  • They use too much upspeak
  • Their voice is too low

For a woman who wants to speak up publicly, it can start to feel like we are damned if we do, and damned if we don't.

This week I had the opportunity to talk to Christine Adam, an international voice, accent and communication skills coach, about why women's voices are more critically received when they speak up in public.  It was a fascinating AND frustrating conversation.

I hope you'll listen!

Guest Bio:
Christine Adam is an international voice, accent and communication skills coach. February: A Month Long Celebration of Self Health, Why We Don't Keep Up With Our Gyno Appointments, and Refusing to Get on the Doctor's Office Scale07 Feb 202200:26:00

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Jess and Jess talk self-care and prioritizing themselves- and why we don't do it. Who is up to date on their mole check? Getting their ovaries inspected? And the dreaded breast mash-up of a mammogram? And don't even get us started on the horrifying experience of having to get on a scale, post-covid, in the presence of a stranger judging them?

Why do we make sure our kids and dogs and partners health is prioritized and doctor's appointments made but when it comes to our own skin, cervix, back pain (you can fill in the blank!) we ignore it, back burner it or just learn to live with it until a crisis forces us to stop and reevaluate?

February is American Heart Month- and because heart disease is the #1 killer in women in the US- killing over 500k women a YEAR, we think this is something we should really talk about.

Whether you are a regular consumer or are worried about the stigma associated with cannabis consumption, podcast host Ellen Scanlon and creater of the How to do the Pot informational (and entertaining!) website can most definitely answer all your questions!
After she sustained a pretty drastic bike accident, Ellen was looking for a better way to treat her chronic pain and health conditions than prescription painkillers, and found respite in cannabis- from treating infertility to regular run of the mill anxiety and stress, Ellen has explored it all and has created a guide for women who are interested in similar explorations as their curiosity grows.
Informative as always, and fun, this episode has TTJ(es) asking ALL kinds of questions about CBD, THC, social justice, legalization, methods of consumption, fears around purchasing and more.

Meet Ellen!
As the host of How to Do the Pot, you’ll find Ellen Lee Scanlon behind the mic, interviewing diverse, modern women about their remarkable experiences with cannabis, recommending the essential strains for women, and sharing the latest research on the psychological and physical benefits of the plant. But what makes this former investment professional and health advocate jump out of bed every morning is her overarching mission to empower women to make more informed choices about their health and well-being. Having released over 100 episodes on everything from sleep to sex, as well as a twice monthly newsletter that reaches tens of thousands of loyal readers, it’s clear that Ellen’s work is striking a chord with the many women curious about cannabis.

Procrastination and Productivity withOUT Stress with Psychotherapist and Procrastination Coach Dr. Christine Li24 Jan 202200:40:01

Send me a Text Message about the show!

You don't have to suffer in silence- and you don't actually have to live under the stress of procrastination! There IS A BETTER WAY! Dr. Christine Li, psychotherapist and procrastination coach, breaks it down in a very easy way to understand- our brains don't want the extra stress associated with procrastination- they are so high level and creative and magical- and our fear of failure, lack of clarity and disbelief in what we are capable of, and the fact that we have forgotten that we are limitless- because we get overwhelmed.

Fascinating, informative and just REALLY REALLY good. The Two Jess(es) highly recommend that you don't procrastinate listening to this one :-)

Meet Dr. Li:
I am a N.Y.S.-licensed clinical psychologist working in private practice in New York City and Westchester, New York. I have conducted Procrastination Workshops at Columbia University, New York-Presbyterian Medical School, the New York City Guitar School, the YMCA of White Plains, and in the New York City community.

I have provided in-service trainings on Procrastination at the counseling service centers at Columbia University, New York-Presbyterian Medical School, SUNY College-Purchase, Fordham University, Barnard College, and Scarsdale High School.

In my work, I draw from my many years of experience working with university-aged students at Adelphi University, Pace University-Pleasantville, Columbia University, and New York-Presbyterian Medical School. I started the “Procrastination Coach” website in 2009 to connect to the wider population of Procrastinators at large.

The Unnatural Space of Motherhood, Guilt, and Self Abandonment: A Movie Review17 Jan 202200:45:11

Send me a Text Message about the show!

When The Two Jess(es) watched Maggie Gyllenhaal's, The Lost Daughter, they knew it was absolutely something we should talk about.

Motherhood. The dark and light side- the highest highs and the lowest lows- this movie made them feel EVERYTHING and most of it made them feel like they were coming out of their skin with discomfort.
TTJ(es) have always had a lot to say on the topic, but using Gyllenhaal's directorial debut as the basis for this conversation takes the topic to a whole other level.
Raw, and as authentic as they have ever gotten- Jess and Jess talk about the shame, the secrecy, the fundamental flaws that attach themselves to the honest conversation around becoming a mother, losing ourselves in motherhood, and finding ourselves outside of that sphere- if it is even possible.
To choose ourselves within the confines of what is supposed to be "the most natural thing" we judge as selfish, crass, and certainly the worst of motherkind.
But is it? TTJ(es) have lots of questions, very little answers, and a whole lot of tears to share.

Why Midlife Bites with NYT Bestselling Author and Blogger of People I Want to Punch in the Throat, Jen Mann03 Jan 202200:48:25

Send me a Text Message about the show!

In an attempt to deal with the resulting range of emotions and physical changes in midlife, Jen Mann posted a completely honest now-viral post, “Anyone Else Falling Apart Or Is It Just Me?” The response was instantaneous and overwhelming. Women from all over the country flooded the comments section, glad to see they weren’t the only ones experiencing this feeling of isolation and dissatisfaction.  Jen decided to create an online community call “Midlife Bites” and quickly had tens of thousands of followers all exchanging thoughts, ideas, and possible solutions around the theme of midlife and what it has to offer, not just how tough it could be. After establishing a safe online space to exchange ideas, Jen used the thousands of responses she got, along with many of her own experiences to inform the topics in MIDLIFE BITES.
Jess and Jess have a WHOLE LOTTA things to say about the general disruption and malaise they are experiencing in their own middle lives, and Jen Mann brings wit, vulnerability and a healthy dose of humor to the conversation around how EVERYTHING changes when you reach the middle of your life- and WHY THE HELL aren't we talking about it?
For women of every age, but especially those between the ages of 40-60, Midlife Bites is a must have manual on how to come through this time in life stronger, connected and ready to take on what's next.

Free and Fair Elections with Tate Fall, Director of Elections for Cobb County Georgia08 Apr 202400:47:20

Send me a Text Message about the show!

I am a proud voting American.  From local, national, primary, or general, I never miss my opportunity to participate in my civic duty and cherished right to vote.  I love the process of going to my polling precinct and casting my ballot.  I slap that sticker on my chest and walk around all day with pride, knowing that instead of choosing to do nothing, I chose to vote.  And I believe, that my vote is counted.  It may not win, but it is always counted.

But I am aware that I may be in the minority who believes that my vote is counted.
In January 2024, Data for Progress found that 43% of likely voters are either not confident at all or only a little confident in the security of elections.  That percentage rises to 50% if you only look at registered Independents and rises to 69% if you only look at registered Republicans.

That is a lot of Americans who do not trust the security of our elections!

I wanted to learn more about the election process.  To see if there is a reason to not trust the system, or to see if this growing mistrust is fueled by misinformation.

My guest this week is Tate Fall, Director of Elections for Cobb County Georgia.  She guides me through the history and process of administering elections, shares how much elections have changed through the years, and dispels some of the most common myths about voter fraud.  This is a conversation you are not going to want to miss.

Tate Fall currently serves as the Director of Elections for Cobb County. She has previously served as the Deputy Director of Elections for Arlington County, VA, a Communications Specialist for the United States Election Assistance Commission (EAC), and as a Voting Rights Advocate for Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program. Tate has her B.S. in Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, a Master of Public Administration and a Graduate Certificate in Election Administration all from Auburn University.

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Dr. Robyn Hanley-Dafoe joins The Two Jess(es) for an authentic and vulnerable conversation about survival, and how equipped we as human beings are, to do hard things. Robyne did one of the hardest things she will ever have to do, and kicked her way out of a sinking car in the middle of a frozen lake during a blizzard outside of Ontario, Canada when she was 16 years old.
It was in those final moments that Dr. Robyne decided life was worth fighting for, and it changed the trajectory of her life, laying the groundwork for her research around resiliency and why people really can do hard things. Her Five Pillars of Every Day Resiliency help us frame the way we can show up in the world as authentic to ourselves and each other with intention to make the best decision we can in the moment, even if it is hard.

Meet Dr. Robyne:
Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe is a multi-award-winning psychology and education instructor who specializes in resiliency, navigating stress and change, leadership, and personal wellness in the workplace. I Keep Trying To Catch His Eye: Grief as Love with Author and Vice President/Editorial at On3.com, Ivan Maisel22 Nov 202100:50:01

Send me a Text Message about the show!

A deeply emotional memoir by a longtime ESPN writer about the suicide of his son Max and how their complicated relationship led him to see grief as love.

In February 2015, Ivan Maisel received a call that would alter his life forever: his son Max’s car was found abandoned in a parking lot next to Lake Ontario. Two months and countless harrowing hours later, Max’s body was found in the lake. There’d been no note or obvious indication that Max wanted to harm himself; he’d signed up for a year-long subscription to a dating service; he’d spent the day he disappeared doing photography work for school. And this uncertainty became part of his father’s grief.

Taking its title from Max’s love of photography—and his tendency to only love the camera when he was behind it, looking away whenever his picture was taken—I KEEP TRYING TO CATCH HIS EYE tells the deeply human and empathetic story of a father’s relationship with his son, of its complications, and of Max and Ivan’s struggle—as is the case for so many parents and their children—to connect. And of how our tendency to overlook men’s mental health can have devastating consequences, and how ultimately letting those who grieve do so openly and freely can lead to greater healing.

The Two Jess(es) have the unique opportunity to talk with Ivan about grief, and  how, at its most stripped down state, it is really born out of love.

Meet Ivan:
Ivan Maisel is Vice President/Editorial and Senior Writer at on3.com. He has covered college football for nearly four decades, from 2002-2021 as a senior writer for ESPN, where he wrote for ESPN.com, appearing on television, ESPN Radio and on podcasts. He also served as Editor-at-Large for ESPN College Football 150. Prior to joining ESPN.com, Maisel covered national college football for Sports Illustrated, Newsday, and The Dallas Morning News. He has been honored eight times for Best Story by the Football Writers Association of America, and twice by The Associated Press Sports Editors, which in 2019 named him one of the 10 best sports columnists. Maisel earned a bachelor's degree in American Studies from Stanford University.

The Healing Power of Story and Reimagining Recovery with Of Substance Founder, Alex Kaplan15 Nov 202100:40:44

Send me a Text Message about the show!

What if...we turned immersive entertainment into our greatest tool for healing and growth? This is the question that drives Alex Kaplan every day, and what led him to form the non-profit Of Substance. By using story telling in the form of mini movies to deliver an immersive experience that heals through depicting addiction- the struggle and triumph- around it

Alex shares with The Two Jess(es) his journey of addiction, and how he has used his passion for movie making and his commitment to vulnerability to propel him forward and turn his mess into his message. His belief is that we have ALL felt that we are not good enough, we all deal with the experiences of embarrassment, shame and unworthiness and the answer is connection and belonging.

Meet Alex!
Alex Kaplan, a Philadelphia native and LA transplant, was trained as an actor in the University of Miami’s conservatory and transitioned to a career behind the camera as a producer and director for the past decade.

Today, Alex is the Co-founder & Executive Director of Of Substance, an innovative non-profit revolutionizing addiction and mental health treatment, education, and support, using premium entertaining short films as a tool for deeper healing, growth, and transformation.

After surviving his own battles with addiction, Alex recognized the power of story as a tool in his recovery and found an exciting way to use his filmmaking experience to help others on their paths of overcoming struggles of shame & isolation.
The biggest thing he learned on his journey is that his issue was far less about using substances than it was about WHY he used substances; It was about shame, isolation, a fear of not belonging, and a fear of not being good enough.

Alex and his co-founder Brian Gallagher built Of Substance to help us all recognize that we’re not alone in these feelings and to positively transform people's relationships with themselves, others, and their beliefs in what's possible.

Most importantly, Alex is now a proud husband, supportive member of his family, and a friend on whom others can lean, having risen from his struggles with addiction and refusing to give up.

Of Substance.

Of Substance is a nonprofit revolutionizing addiction, mental health, and suicide prevention, education, treatment, and support thought movies!

We make premium entertaining short films, mini-movies you really like watching, that tackle all of our struggles in a way that helps us overcome the shame, blame, and stigma we all experience, reminding us that we're not crazy, we're not alone, and we're already doing great!

We're turning movies into an approachable and captivating tool for transformation, that expedites and enhances the journey through healing and growth.

Believe Her. A Discussion on Criminalized Survivors, True Crime Podcasts and Nikki Addimando with Investigative Journalist, Justine van der Leun.01 Nov 202100:37:09

Send me a Text Message about the show!

In follow up of their first conversation with representatives from the Nicole Addimando Community Defense Committee, The Two Jess(es) talk with Justine van der Leun, investigative journalist and host of the true crime podcast, Believe Her, produced by Lemonada Media.

Through this six part series, Justine explores true crime as it comes to us, upside down — she presents a story about survival, punishment, and a push for change through rare access to police audio, official documents, and rare conversations with criminalized survivor, Nikki Adamando, from prison. Justine is on a mission to unravel this complex, layered case of criminalized survival, and ask: How can we stop cycles of trauma and violence? What does true justice look like?

Jess and Jess, as close followers of Nikki's case, ask a few of their own difficult questions and the three women have a very open and honest discussion about the systemic work that still needs to be done so that victims of abuse may truly live free.

Meet Justine:
Justine van der Leun is an award-winning journalist and an Emerson fellow at the New America Foundation. She is currently writing Unreasonable Women: Survival, Punishment, and Mass Incarceration in America, which will blend narrative stories with original nationwide data to explore the links between trauma, systemic failures, and the criminalization of women’s acts of survival from physical and sexual abuse. The book will be published by Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins. Follow her @justinevdl.

About Lemonada Media:

Give Up or Get Up. A Conversation on Surviving Grief and Perfectionism with author and 100% Human Founder, Karen Allen25 Oct 202100:59:03

Send me a Text Message about the show!

When Karen Allen was 29 years old, she was a wife, a mother of a two year old, and had the whole wide world ahead of her. And then, it all fell apart- and in the space of a breath, her life was completely derailed, and a new one began, when an armed shooter walked into her husband's Crossfit studio, and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
A widow before she turned 30, it was when her 2 year old wandered into her bedroom and wanted to know if she was going to get out of bed- that she realized she had two choices. She could either give up, or get up. And then she realized, she always had more than one choice in life. And the best choice is always going to be to embrace the messy middle of being 100% human.

A conversation on perfectionism and recovery- on authenticity and excellence- the fullness of the human experience- Karen breaks down how to have a more meaningful connection with their own humanity with the Two Jess(es).

Meet Karen:
Karen is proud to be a...
✔ Super-mom and totally figuring it out as I go
✔ Keynote speaker who still gets bubbly butterflies (learn my trick to turn those anxious nerves into uplifting excitement)
✔ Healthy eater who also loves pizza and greasy burgers
✔ Super organized person who can never find her Airpods
✔ Amateur musician who sings off-key sometimes while cooking, cleaning and driving
who helps people all over the world get out of a rut and wholeheartedly pursue their biggest goals; because she knows first hand that when you choose to be better, you make the people and the world around you better, too. Karen turned her epiphany into a clear, actionable mindset that provides a “get out of perfection free” card for all of the beautiful, imperfect humans out there . 100% Human™ is about developing the mindset and tools to stop feeling tossed around by life and start focusing on the joy and abundance that is actually under your control.

The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence with NYT Bestselling Author, Jessica Lahey18 Oct 202100:54:06

Send me a Text Message about the show!

In this supportive, life-saving resource, the New York Times bestselling author of The Gift of Failure helps parents and educators understand the roots of substance abuse and identify who is most at risk for addiction, and offers practical steps for prevention.

Jessica Lahey was born into a family with a long history of alcoholism and drug abuse. Despite her desire to thwart her genetic legacy, she became an alcoholic and didn’t find her way out until her early forties. Jessica has worked as a teacher in substance abuse programs for teens, and was determined to inoculate her two adolescent sons against their most dangerous inheritance. All children, regardless of their genetics, are at some risk for substance abuse. According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, teen drug addiction is the nation’s largest preventable and costly health problem. Despite the existence of proven preventive strategies, nine out of ten adults with substance use disorder report they began drinking and taking drugs before age eighteen.

The Two Jess(es) welcome this incredible third Jess, once again, for another rattling WeSTAT conversation on the topic of alcohol, your kids, substance abuse disorder, and how our relationship to ALL of it, desperately needs to be examined- for the sake of our children's brain development.

Meet Jessica!
Jessica Lahey writes about education, parenting, and child welfare for The Washington Post, the New York Times, and The Atlantic and is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed. She is a member of the Amazon Studios Thought Leader Board and wrote the curriculum for Amazon Kids’ The Stinky and Dirty Show. She lives in Vermont with her husband and two sons.

We Should Talk About Tik Tok with Pamela Wurst Vetrini01 Apr 202400:54:12

Send me a Text Message about the show!

We should talk about Tik Tok.
As a Gen X-er, I cling to my Facebook and I feel fancy that I consistently use Instagram.  But if I'm being honest, I know that this makes me basically an elderly user of social media apps.  YouTube and Tik Tok are the social media apps where Gen Z and Gen Alpha are spending the majority of their time.  So, what's an "Insta-Grandma" to do to try and stay au courant on the trends?
Enter my guest, Pamela Wurst Vetrini.
Pamela is a content creator, content curator, and social media consultant. Vetrini gained a following of over 150,000 followers by translating tik tok trends for an elder millennial audience. After working in marketing and PR in publishing in NYC, she decided to focus on learning how to use social media during her time as a stay at home mom. Vetrini's greatest viral success came in the summer of 2023 when she curated a reality tv "season" of private chefs in the Hamptons from existing tik tok content.

We Should Talk About Botox. A WeSTAT Skincare Consultation with Medical Esthetician, Jennifer Daniels.16 Aug 202100:54:46

Send me a Text Message about the show!

The Two Jess(es) start off Season 3 with a bang, and get really vulnerable about.....their faces. JessB gets really honest about what she sees going on under her eyes, and while way back in Season 1, she waxed poetic about aging and her right to eye bags, she has decided, she's done.
In their quest for hearing all sides of the skincare story, and in an effort to appease their curiosity and get some answers to the burning question for almost every woman over 40: WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY F%&*ING FACE! And what can I do about it?

JessK brings in THE EXPERT to answer ALL the questions, and these answers are brought to us by non other than her sister, Jennifer Daniels. Jennifer is a medical esthetician, and owner of The Med Spa (https://themedsparaleigh.com/) which is one of the top med spas in the greater Raliegh area. Jennifer generously offers her advice, and professional wisdom, as she patiently answers all of Jess and Jess' questions about prevention and correction, neurotoxins, fillers, creams, just to name a few.

JessK shares her thoughts and experience around her own use with injectables, and the thought process behind it. The constant conundrum of aging gracefully with authenticity, or with the assistance of modern science, the largest organ of our body and how we care for it is always cause for interesting, and sometimes heated, conversations!

Meet Jennifer!

“Beautiful skin is attainable for everyone and finding the right balance of products and treatments for clients is what I do best.  A skincare routine just has to work for you.  I am a product enthusiast, and I’m always researching how ingredients react with other components to achieve the optimal skincare regimen.”

After her daughter started kindergarten, Jennifer decided she needed a change from her decade-plus career in sales and marketing. She wanted to follow her lifelong passion for skincare and layer on to her B.S. in Business Administration from Miami University. She went back to school, graduated top of her class in Esthetics at Miller Motte College and went on to acquire Laser Certification at the Laser Institute in Albany, NY.  Jennifer has been affiliated with Raleigh Plastic Surgery Center since 2008 and began The MedSpa in early 2013.

Jennifer is wholeheartedly committed to the improvement of clients’ skin and addressing their skin’s appearance  and concerns. Her favorite part of her job is conversing with patients to get insight into their wants, needs and expectations about aging, sorting through the myriad of products on the market and their skincare goals.  “Integrated skincare performed with integrity” it’s a mantra Jennifer embodies and what has landed The Medspa as one of the top rated medical spas in the Triangle.

Favorite beauty service: Eyelash tinting! The best way to make your eyes pop (of course after you use Latisse or Revitalash to grow long lush lashes!)

Favorite skincare product: Hydrating B5 gel by Skinceuticals hands down! Comprised of Hyaluronic acid, EVERYONE can use it. Everyone needs it! Hydr

Intro to SEASON 3: Vulnerability...We Should Talk <More> About That.09 Aug 202100:18:58

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Uncertainty, risk, emotional exposure. This (according to the GREAT Brene Brown) is the definition of vulnerability.

Sounds like a great way to kick off Season 3, right? In true WeSTAT fashion, the Two Jess(es) have decided to pick a theme to carry them through, along with their guests, this season of conversation and topic exploration. The heavy and the light sides of vulnerability will be the aim of this season's content production, and they invite you to join them as they ask the hard questions, sit in the light that it brings, together, as they continue on in their never ending quest to explore themselves.

Are You Ready To Head Back Into THE CIRCUS? A Conversation on Work-Life Balance with Author, Jenn Folsom02 Aug 202100:48:27

Send me a Text Message about the show!

As we approach (what we HOPE!) is a more normal start to the school year, returning to the office IN PERSON, and juggling this *post/mid* COVID life, we are bringing ringmaster of the modern woman's world, Jenn Folsom BACK!
Offering many pieces of practical advice on managing the circus of what we call life, Jenn shares her perspective as a working mom of three teenage boys. She gets really honest about the illusiveness of a work life balance, and shows us how we can decide what goes into the rings of our own circus.
Thinking strategically about not being 'mommytracked' at work, getting back into the work force after taking time off, (are you one of the millions of women who have been forced out of the workplace in the last year?), and having the fortitude to ask for what you are worth, Jenn offers invaluable nuggets of wisdom for women as they juggle all.the.things.
Referencing the current crisis, as many of us are all trying to work from home and home school our kids, she says the silver lining is that the whole world is now an audience to the struggle of the working parent. Jenn gets really honest about lowering the expectations for ourselves right now, but also using this time to think and plan strategically for when the world resumes some sort of normality.

Show Notes:
Jennifer Folsom is a dynamic, high-energy leader with a proven record of growing all sizes of professional services firms while growing a family.   She is the Vice President of Growth, for ICF Next, where she she serves as a relationship-driven growth leader across a diverse portfolio of digital, communications, and social marketing projects serving the Civilian and Defense sectors.

A human capital expert, she leverages a people-centered approach to drive revenue in organizations from start-up to Big 4. An-oft quoted expert in corporate culture, Jennifer promotes the notion that the multiple in firm valuation starts with the people. Her colleagues cite one of her greatest strengths as the “ability to cut through the noise to solve an issue.”

She's also the mom of 3 sons, 17-year-old twins and a 12-year old-firecracker. Wife. Daughter. Sister. Friend. Yogi. Old lady soccer team player. Amateur farm-to-table chef. Vegetable gardener. Paddleboarder. Bourbon lover. Runner. Reader. Writer. Jennifer loves her work but knows that living your whole b est life is the ultimate key to success.

Who Needs to Drink A Little Less These Days? A Conversation Around the Drink Less Lifestyle with Dr. Sherry Price26 Jul 202100:51:00

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Do you over-drink? Do you feel ashamed about your drinking habit? Are you concerned that your habit is turning into a problem, especially when 5 o clock rolls around and you reach for that bottle of Pinot without even really thinking about it anymore?

Jess and Jess have decided its time to have a conversation about their alcohol habits, and so they have invited Dr. Sherry Price on to talk about her Drink Less Lifestyle Program, a program designed for high functioning women who are tired of feeling out of control and not in charge when it comes to their drinking habits. Dr. Sherry's program, based on neuroscience, and rooted in her own personal experience with over-drinking has allowed her the opportunity to work with hundreds of women who have grown weary of the shame and negative effects that come with having too much.

In this episode TTJ(es) get really uncomfortable, slightly emotional and characteristically introspective as they talk with Dr. Sherry about meeting themselves in an alcohol-free space, and relearning how to operate in social capacities as just themselves. Once again, they are called upon to show up and practice what Jess K calls, 'empowered choice' and it turns out, it doesn't seem to be all that hard after all.

Meet Dr. Sherry!

Sherry B. Price, PharmD, MBA, APh, BCPS is a certified life coach, podcaster, pharmacist, and creator of the Drink Less Lifestyle program. She's helped hundreds of women stop the overdrinking habit and create a new relationship with alcohol where they are confident and in control. Her website is www.sherryprice.com where she offers a variety of free resources including her podcast called Drink Less Lifestyle

We Should Talk About The Gift of Failure for Our Kids....Again, with NYT Bestselling Author, Jessica Lahey.19 Jul 202101:05:59

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Failure. It's a scary word in general, but when it comes to our kids and letting them 'fail' we are a generation of parents that will go to great lengths to keep that from happening. Maybe it's the way Gen Xers were parented (or not parented) or our need to achieve or just our general fear of upsetting the proverbial apple cart- one thing is clear: our kids are not getting the best end of the stick when it comes to trying, failing, and getting back up again.

In her book, 'The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go so their Children can Succeed." author Jessica Lehay brings so many personal experiences from her classroom, and parenting fails through the pages of this book in order to help parents see how detrimental bailing their children out can really be. The Two Jess(es) bring all their parenting questions to this third Jess and are met with a wealth of experience, wisdom and professional advice.

The book is a must read, and this episode is a must listen, for those parents who may be struggling to empower their children with the gift of independence, competence and confidence in the face of disappointment.

WeSTAT Pop Culture18 Mar 202400:57:20

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Join Jessica and her pop culture guest of the week, Joey Klei, as they discuss the pop culture topics that are front of mind for them.

  • Where is Princess Catherine? ***Big correction!! Jessica says MULTIPLE times that the timeline starts 12/23/23, but it really was 12/28/23.  In her excitement, she got the date wrong, a lot.  This is why she is not running for President.
  • Joey reviews the Apple Vision Pro glasses
  • We should talk about the Oscars

Do YOU want to be a part of the next pop culture segment?  Send me a message at info@westatpod.com and let me know what you think we should talk about!  You might just be my next pop culture aficionado called upon!

Let's Revisit Vagina Town with Pelvic Health Physical Therapist, Dr. Gopi Pillai12 Jul 202100:58:51

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Summer Sabbatical for WeSTAT continues! This time, we revisit one of our favorite episodes about (ahem) one of our favorite places, VAGINA TOWN with Dr. Gopi Pillai- a pelvic health physical therapist who is incredibly knowledgeable about all things having to do with your vagina, and entertaining.as.hell. :-)

Dr. Gopi takes this episode to a whole new level with an in-depth visit to 'Vagina Town.' She explains then ins and outs (pun intended!) of the often overlooked importance of pelvic health, details the signs and symptoms that could be a result of problems with the pelvis, and well, just has a lot of fun talking about it all. In her words: 'her job is to help people enjoy sex again!' And she LOVES it!

TTJ(es) have a lot of fun with this incredibly informative conversation. Even if the word Vagina, (and dicks) makes you uncomfortable,  stick with it- and take a ride to Vagina Town with Dr. Gopi- there is help out there for us all!

Meet Dr. Gopi!

Gopi was born and raised in New York and graduated from Stony Brook University with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2003 at which time her interest in Women's Health began. She eventually moved to Brooklyn, where she started the first Women's Health PT program at a major hospital. Gopi went on to open a private practice in Brooklyn, specializing in male and female pelvic health for 8 years until her family life brought her to Northern Virginia.

She started Blueprint Physical Therapy in January of 2019 and has loved getting to know her new surroundings while providing in home visits around DC, Maryland and Virginia. She is dedicated to continuing education and is a teacher, teaching assistant and lecturer for providers of many disciplines and for the community. She's also a wife and mom of a 4 and 5 year old and just added a pandemic puppy to her family.

Summer Sabbatical: The Good Enough Mother in Review05 Jul 202100:38:39

Send me a Text Message about the show!

All through the month of July, The Two Jess(es) will be re-airing some of their favorite conversations from the very beginning of WeSTAT. This particular conversation on motherhood, the high highs, and the low lows- and everything in between, from season one, is definitely one to revisit.

Considering this original conversation took place prior to the world changing due to COVID, TTJ(es) are happy to report that they have really leaned in to the practice of "Good Enough Mothering" out of necessity, and realize that nothing really happens before it's supposed to- including the lessons learned from our most precious and relentless little life interrupters.

Calling All Entrepreneurs! Mission Entrepreneurship with Boss Lady Bio Creator and Overall Champion of Women, Jen Griswold28 Jun 202100:44:27

Send me a Text Message about the show!

Jen Griswold is a woman with a mission, and always has been. From the very beginning of her military career, Jen has been committed to sharing the hard won lessons she has learned with those around her- especially military spouses. With the arrival of children, Jen found herself in the role of "support services" while her husband was deployed, and as she looked around at other military spouses around her, she  realized there was a bottomless pool of untapped potential that needed to be set free.

So, she started a business. And then another one. And then another one. Today, Jen is an author Mission Entrepreneur: Applying Lessons from Military Life to Create Success in Business Startups and  an entrepreneur, and retired military officer with a heart for serving
her community through teaching entrepreneurship and providing marketing resources to
women who want to launch their own businesses.

Today, Jen leads the training, development, and production of a distributed team of over 9,000 entrepreneurs that produces over $20M in skincare sales annually.
Jen Griswold has been featured on the Today Show, in Arlington Magazine, NextGenMilspouse, and on a variety of podcasts about entrepreneurship and performance.
Jen also founded a website and branding development company dedicated to helping women in business grow their impact through marketing. Her company Mission Entrepreneur is launching a social software product in 2021 that will make design and technology accessible to anyone with a social media account.

This is such an inspirational conversation with Jen, Jess and Jess, for any woman who is flirting with the idea of entrepreneurship because of their heart for service, and desire to be successful in any capacity in which they put their hands to.
