We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series:
Lanterns (HBO): The prestige TV-meets-comics, gritty, small-town crime show featuring galactic space cops. Covered by me, Kirk, and Jim.
Severance (Apple TV): A mind-bending show where office workers’ minds are severed into two selves, one that exists only at work, and the other only outside. It’s beautiful, brilliant, funny, gripping, mysterious, thrilling, thought-provoking, and meticulously crafted in every way. Hosted by Jason and Karen’s innies.
Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi.
Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen.
IT:Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, with Pennywise stalking the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elm Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed.
Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Randy.

Big thanks if you leave us a rating (and a review, if you like) on Apple Podcasts!
Here’s our episode on the Lanterns finale, a series that ended up carrying more weight with all of us than I think we realized it would. Hope you enjoy our take on it.
And huge thanks to all of you for following along with us! We really appreciate you guys. If there’s a season 2, we’ll be back, and we’ll probably jump on and talk about Man of Tomorrow — the upcoming Superman movie featuring the next appearance of John Stewart — when it comes out next July.

Big congrats to the winners of our Casting Light Oath contest (listen to find out who)! They’ll each win their choice of a Lanterns tribute poster, illustrated by the one and only Kirk Manley. Check out those and a bunch of other of his illustrations at https://www.instagram.com/batmankm/

Widow's Bay S1E2 "Lodging"
Saturday, October 10, 2026 • Duration 01:16:56
In this episode, the mayor spends the night in a charming inn and plays board games with one of the other guests, and it’s all fine. La la la la la la.
Welcome to Widow’s Bay everybody! Karen and I are overjoyed that so many of you expressed interest in us covering this. And what a pleasure to be immersing ourselves in the world of this wonderfully funny, smart, creepy, kooky, multiple Emmy-winning series.
This episode in particular won Emmys for best writing and directing, and it shows. This is one of those pilots that just nails it, hooking you in right away. And Matthew Rhys’ performance in particular is brilliant. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the podcast as Karen and I talk it out!

They just keep getting better and better. Such a hard-hitting, engaging episode this week, with perspective on Hal’s past and his relationship with his father, John reckoning with a more compassionate version of Hal, and their journey to a surreal other world. We can’t wait to see how this wraps up.

Lanterns S1E6 "Bad Optics"
Wednesday, September 23, 2026 • Duration 02:25:21
Yet another change of pace this week, with this complicated, somber, surprisingly funny, intriguing, and moving episode, as we see how John has changed in the 10 years since turning down the Green Lantern ring — and how he deals with the mysterious death of his former mentor/antagonist.

Wow, this slow-burn show picked up the pace in the second half of season three, and we’re totally digging it (pun!). Thrilling to see so many questions answered, and new ones raised, and to find out that the final season isn’t too far away — July 9, 2007! Join Jason, Veronica, and Amelie as we get into all the details of the second half of Silo season 3, maybe our favorite segment of this series so far.
Explosive, destructive episode this week as all the tension that’s been building up in this series finally comes to a head. It really felt like a season finale, didn’t it? Which makes us even more curious to find out what they’ll do with the final three episodes. Lots to talk about for this one though, so join us as we talk it out!

What’s next for Wax Episodic?
As I (Jason) mentioned on the podcast, the plan is to go on hiatus for awhile, and come back for the new HBO show, Lanterns, premiering August 16.
Lanterns is an upcoming new superhero/detective series, but I’m most excited about it because of where it’s airing (because HBO has been producing high-quality shows for years), and also the kick-ass bunch of creators and actors who are involved: Lanterns is headed up by Damon Lindelof (LOST, The Leftovers, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective), and Tom King (Mister Miracle, The Vision), stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), and co-stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle).
Premise: Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers. The series follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, which Jordan believes is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.
P.S. There’s a chance we’ll be back with a surprise or two before Lanterns. Either way keep us in your feed and we’ll talk to you soon!
