Ep 014- Upgrading Protools, Using Source Connect

Episode 14

mercredi 27 mars 2019Duration 34:50

Oh myyyy! What an episode.

THIS is what it's like in the hallway of our studio. So go stand next to your coffeepot like we do when we're doing these huge eye-rolling geek-outs, and join us for another episode of The Voice Recording Bootcamp Podcast.

First up, poltergeist plumbing at Scott's house.
Solution! Good information from experts in the field. And the right tools.
Hint hint... https://www.vrbootcamp.com/

Deb updates her ProTools. Comedy ensues when her Mac Operating system and audio box all have to be replaced too.
The journey from her long loved Digidesign 003 to a bright shiny Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 https://focusrite.com/usb-audio-interface/scarlett/scarlett-18i8

We have a new editor! Which is so awesome because we figure we can give you info all day long, but what slows us down is editing our own voices.
Erin McGee to the rescue. Erin is a recent grad of the Art Institute in San Diego, where Deb once taught.

And on that note... DRAMAAAA!!!! Art Institute students this month went to class only to find the doors locked. Forever. Mid-semester.
Deb tells all...

And we're working across the pond! Six one hour specials for National Geographic with Nat Geo Explorer Albert Lin.
https://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/00000144-0a29-d3cb-a96c-7b2d5e670000

Albert was in the studio with us, while the post houses in London directed the sessions and recorded the audio remotely using Source Connect Pro.

And a question from former Voice Recording Bootcamp student prompts a discussion on rates, usage and pricing of your voice over work.
Here are some of the sources you might want to keep up with:
https://www.world-voices.org
https://globalvoiceacademy.com
Dave Courvoisier voice over blog https://courvo.com/blog

And a new combination online / live in the studio class coming up. Starting in May 2019.

Good times.

Love, Deb and Scott

Ep 013- Passion Projects, Loudness Wars

Episode 13

vendredi 9 novembre 2018Duration 41:16

Holy Gain Stage, Batman! It's been a busy month at Studio C Creative Sound! (The official Batcave of the Voice Recording Bootcamp in San Diego CA)

We've been doing lots of podcasts in both audio and video formats, managing voice over classes with some of our favorite voice over instructors in Southern California, and working on our passion projects.

We take another look at what it takes to record your voice over work, and offer some creative ideas for using your mad skills and gear to make an income.

Our former student Cheryl had a project dropped in her lap and wasn't quite sure how to handle the lack of budget. What to do? Well, if it's a fun project (and you're pretty sure you're not just getting worked by the client), see it as an opportunity to make friends and contacts that will further your career.

We chat/rant about the history of the Loudness Wars, and how we got here. And show you all about RMS and LUFS, which you definitely want to understand if you're getting in to any type of streaming or podcasting work. It's a little nerdy, but we've kept it painless.

And a cool little FREE plug-in to make sure you're sending the right levels to your client, like Amazon ACX or podcast hosting service.

Plus, a little Easter Egg for you if you listen to the end.

Enjoy!

Ep 001- Getting Started in Voice Over- The Lost Episode!

Episode 1

lundi 1 février 2016Duration 25:49

Welcome to the LOST EPISODE!
When we switched over to our new host, Libsyn, we somehow lost this one, which was so sad, because it was our first episode, and it had SO MUCH good content for voice over artists about getting into the voice over world.

But Scott found it in an archive. So here you have it.

This episode is about getting started: how difficult it can be, experiences we're scared of encountering, and how to push through the fear and finally get started. We believe that to learn something, you need to know more than just technical info. Voice over is technical, and also an art.

Learning from others' experiences can be a tremendous help to your career. In this series we're going to give you technical help, tips about the business, and motivation to get out there and do your art. And we'll share lots of our own experiences. Scott's been in the business as a producer/engineer since 1980. Deb's been on both sides of the glass, as voice over artist, and in music engineering, since 2006. We can save you a lot of time with all the life lessons we've encountered in the creative professions!

So Let's get started!

BTW, the podcast mentioned in the beginning is called "After The Session", by Christian Cummings.

Ep 012- A Session With Neil Degrasse Tyson

Episode 12

jeudi 4 octobre 2018Duration 40:01

The day before this episode, Deb had just finished a voice session with Neil Degrasse Tyson, for season 3 of the Nova television show. We debrief about the session, discussing both the performance/art and the technical aspects of doing a remotely directed session using Source-Connect.

We take our microphones down the hall to Signature Sound Studios, where our engineer buddy Christian Cummings weighs in on his view of the session as honorary second engineer (okay, he just really wanted to be there in the room to soak up the smart stuff).

Still on our caffeine jag, we talk about Scott's radio show and podcasting adventures, the importance of momentum, and how our pro friends are REALLY getting voice over jobs.

And all this from our wonderful front office, from which we can actually see daylight.

Recorded with two Shure SM58 mics on a Zoom H5 recorder, instead of the Neumann U87s that we usually use in the (windowless) studio.
Let us know what you think!

Cheers,

Deb and Scott

Ep 011- Voice Production in Radio Shows

Episode 11

samedi 26 mai 2018Duration 28:37

In this episode, we had just wrapped up production for a friend and former student as he prepares to launch his new radio show "The Many Moods of Vince Daniels". It's always fun to see what other people are doing with their voice performance and production knowledge.

Originally intended as a short segment in our regular podcast format, this turned into such a fun conversation that we just tweaked it up a bit and are giving you the full uncut chat with a long-time radio fan and air personality.

We talk about production elements that radio programs use to keep the energy and interest up. We talk biz, gear, performance, and passion.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Cheers,

Deb and Scott

Ep 010- Podcasting, scams, keeping cool, and happy campers

Episode 10

mardi 6 mars 2018Duration 34:21

In this episode we share more experiences with phone patch sessions using Skype with a New York City publisher client listening in to an entire audiobook session.

We talk about some scams that we and our students have encountered.

New toys! Deb got a Presonus Audiobox i2 so she can do Skype sessions from her iPad. Scott got a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for the audiobook project. Sweet little boxes.

And we visit our friend Carmen Beaubeaux, who is roaming the country in an Airstream trailer with her husband Jim. Carmen is recording her "Living in Beauty" podcast from her trailer's recording studio.

Ep 009- Working Remotely with Clients

Episode 9

vendredi 25 août 2017Duration 27:21

In this episode we share recent experiences with phone patch sessions, as well as Dave Smith's 3-way remote session using ISDN and SourceConnect.

Some tips for making the file sharing process easy for your clients! And how to make yourself a solid part of your client's team.
