Morag Wehrle on Not Selling Yourself Short, Writing, Post-Partum Depression, and Blending History with Memoir

Season 3 · Episode 9

mercredi 22 mai 2024Duration 01:29:09

For their last interview of the season, Alex and Karen are joined by writer Morag Wehrle to talk all about the non-fiction memoir she is currently working on that centres around postpartum depression - connecting her own experience with that of a woman from the late 19th century who was institutionalized for the same condition. They discuss how the project came to be and the serendipitous nature of it; from the circumstances that led to Morag working on the book to her incredibly varied backlog of careers and passions that came together to aid in her research. Morag gives so much insight into her creativity and together they cover so many aspects of the creative practice, like creative biases and continuing to learn and explore in adulthood.

For their last interview of the season, Alex and Karen talk to musician and composer Thad Bailey-Mai, and the topics are plentiful! They get into his unique style of composing orchestral pieces;  his other creative outlets; his chronic injury; and the burnout that’s led to his current self-appointed recovery period, discussing why it’s a crucial part of his (and everyone’s!) creative process and the very cool projects that await him on the other side.

Kaya Kurz on Garment Making, Chronic Illness, and Being Radicalized By Tumblr

Season 2 · Episode 7

mercredi 25 octobre 2023Duration 01:33:45

Alex and Karen talk to musician, sewist, arts worker, and all around cool person Kaya Kurz about her life as a multi-faceted artist. Kaya shares her self-described “flukey” journey from music school to her current job working for an arts non-profit, and how her idea to take up sewing as a covid hobby turned into a passion project that has become one of her main forms of artistic expression as well as a tool for both advocacy and community on her Instagram page that chronicles her work. They talk about Kaya’s chronic illness and how that has impacted her creativity, especially in the realm of garment making, and explore many different topics that are connected to the fashion industry, such as fast fashion; anti-fat bias; and the ability or inability to properly express oneself through style.
