VPAs11 Nov 202500:51:30

This week, The Idiots discuss VPAs, or...ya know what, I am not going to tell you what a VPA is because it takes away the mystery. This is what they call in the show biz "a teaser". Are you interested? I hope so! Anyway, Dr. Kent compares VPAs to something similar in human medicine, and they discuss potential goods and bads of VPAs. Just listen. I'm really sleepy and have nothing in the creative tank. I mean, I named the episode "VPAs". Just lower your standards this once, please. Thanks!

An Afternoon With Our New Pal Jae04 Nov 202500:59:49

Hey everyone! Meet Jae. They are an awesome listener/fan who reached out, has some things to say about being in the vet world as a rookie, sometimes scared, sometimes not knowing what to expect, but feeling their way through and getting better every day. Listen up, because they also talk about what it takes to be a great client and what to avoid to not be a boneheaded one! Plus, talks of bottle feeding kittens. So, pull up a seat at the proverbial table, grab a beer (except Jae, Jae will be drinking a soda or juice or something because they're a youngin'), and learn to not just respect your elders, but your younger generation, because they have something worth listening to.

Huge thank you, also, to Jae for this episode. We recorded it 3 times. The first two times, the files were lost (see previous episode in Spooky Season about why Cory has to use his wife's computer for the time being), this time, it recorded, but for some reason, our program ONLY worked with cell phones. Fate was not kind to us this time around. I will say, I am incredibly impressed with the sound quality I got from her AirPod Pros, and if Apple wants to sponsor us in the form of, say, a couple new MacBooks, some new AirPod Pros (especially for Kent), and a suitcase full of money (not milk), we would kindly accept!

Doggo Snozzos27 May 202500:41:57

Welcome back to another riveting episode where the boys inevitably get distracted and go on tangents. However, along the way, the Idiots talk noses. You know, snoots, boopers, snozzes, sniffers, cold wet presses...the list goes on. Learn about some of the super amazing functions of the nose, why they're better with theirs than you'll ever be with yours, and imagine being able to see the world by scent. Also, there were supposed to be some links for references, but you'll have to google that yourself because Cory lost the list and doesn't feel like hearing Kent complain. Again. So, the research is from blubity bloo. Trust me, that will make sense in the context of the episode. Also, if you listen closely, you can hear the cameo of multiple birds on the window bird feeder adding their two cents to the conversation. No one asked, though. Very pushy, insistant, really.

Mind Altering Powers of Toxoplasmosis20 May 202500:33:09

Cue the freaky deaky theremin music, because this week the Idiots talk toxoplasmosis, an infection that lives in cat poo (and unwashed veggies and undercooked meat) that affects brains. All mammals can be affected, but rats and mice are affected the most. However, humans can also be greatly affected. Listen this week to learn more about this disease, and to find out you may actually already have it....

Wolves to Dogs to Potatoes Part 3, Frenchie Revolution13 May 202500:30:26

In an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction.

In what many are calling the greatest trilogy of all time, better than the Lort of Da Rings, Star Warz, Goodfadder, and Alans, the Idiots bring their journey to an end. In this, they discuss French Bulldogs, who were thiiiiiiissssss close to being extinct, and how some lady I'm too lazy to go back and listen or look up saved them. She's a hero, though. They talk again about selective breeding, and how even foxes have been bred to be closer to dogs, and slowly develop floppy ears in place of their pointy ears.

Also, seriously, go look up rose eared Frenchies. Seriously, go. You're welcome.

Wolves to Dogs to Potatoes Part 206 May 202500:42:14

In an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction.

Welcome to part 2. This week the Idiots talk about breeds going extinct, but also dabble in how some could be saved or became other breeds. They discuss what makes a breed a breed, and some other stuff. Idk. I was too busy looking things up for them.

Wolves to Dogs to Potatoes Part 129 Apr 202500:41:06

In an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction.

Part 1 is the discussion of wolves, specifically a breed of wolf that no longer is on this planet, most likely because it assimilated quietly into modern dogs. They talk of how dogs spread throughout the world, the cause of them joining human ranks, why a symbiotic relationship was so important it came to what we have today, and discuss other things, like ring evolution (editors note, Cory talks about birds on Darwin Island and erroneously refers to them as wrens, but they were actually finches) and selective breeding for working needs.

Dawwwwww, Look At the Baby Vet with Dr. Maddy22 Apr 202501:10:08

The Idiots have talked about what it's like when you're an established vet, what it's like going through vet school, and what it's like in internships, residencies, and clinicals, but that murky inbetween has not been breached. That's where Dr. Maddy Golichowski (or as Kent says "Gahlowzzskckksheeee") comes in. Dr. Maddy is well into her second year as a practicing vet, which allows her the hindsight of a first year without the distance in time obscuring her view. We talk pros, cons, and difficulties with being green in the field. Listen up, this rookie is going to do great things, and The Idiots were happy to be along for the ride.

Idiots Talk Dog Brain On Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys15 Apr 202501:06:41

We did a crossover thing! The lovely Dr. Amy Pike and Dr Amy Learn were gracious enough to share a show with us. Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots collides with Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys, and the result is wonderful. Lots of laughs, lots of information, much of it to do with simplifying dog behavior, understanding how to interpret their mannerisms and actions, and why some things get confused due to outdated thoughts. Be safe with your pets, and your pets will be safe with you. Also, check out their show. Our episode has been on for a couple weeks, and now is available on our sites. Learn and Pike are both wonderful, intelligent, and entertaining doctors and are probably better than us in every way, except we grow better beards and are way bigger in Iceland.

Oncology With Dr. Fulkerson08 Apr 202501:13:31

If there is something that we can all agree on wholeheartedly, it's "f*#$ cancer", right? This week, The Idiots bring on The Oncology Idiot, Dr. Christopher Fulkerson, who is at the forefront of cancer research for animals. Join us as we break down why there isn't a simple cure for cancer, the ways we are advancing in medicine, how the research process goes, and why animal research is great for humans, as breakthroughs with the former can jump to the latter.

Also, Dr. Kent ALMOST laughs at Cory's joke, so that's exciting.

White Coat Syndrome01 Apr 202501:09:42

This week, The Idiots discuss White Coat Syndrome, which is a phenomenon where nerves override the body in anticipation of seeing a doctor. Can be the building, the area, the lobby, the doctor-something just gets ahold of the animals. This can happen to humans, as well. We are lobbying for a new law where pizza and tacos are given free at the doctor, to make it more enjoyable and to relate good with the clinic. We do the same with animals! Anyway, listen in to hear about WCS, how you can help your pets get through it, and the pitfalls of failing to be prepared for a visit with an anxious dog. Just remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure Or Some Crap Kent Says25 Mar 202501:05:37

Howdy! Do you want to pay a small amount now or a huge amount later? Unless you are a moron, I think I know the answer. That's what this episode is all about. The boys talk preventative medicine, including checks ups, vaccines, and other routine maintainence for your pet. Don't worry, they get distracted, figure out how to work Angela Bassett into the conversation, and get sidetracked talking about sharks.

BTW, Cory's 5 favorite sharks all time are the thresher, great white, megalodon, goblin, and stethacanthus.

Thar Be Vampars In Them There Diseases28 Oct 202500:51:27

Spooky Season is finally ending, and the Idiots end it with a fizzle. Piggybacking off of last week's Vampire and Tuberculosis episode, the discussion dives into more vampire legends, including the tie into wolves and bats, disease creating a weakness to sunlight, water and rabies, and how these and other misunderstandings with disease and how it spread directly impacted the lore of the classic vampires we know today. There literally was even a Great Vampire Pandemic. Fun times.

Self Care For Mental Health Strength with Amber Johnson, LLMSW18 Mar 202501:17:38

In a season of return guests, another makes a come back. Amber Johnson, Idiot Brain Witch extraordinaire, touches on mental health again, and steps you can do to help keep mental health in check. Be it self care, calming techniques, or just being kind to yourself in general, you matter, and vets have incredibly stressful jobs. Yours might be, too, if your career isn't in the veterinary medicine world. Maybe you're unemployed or a stay at home parent. Mental health, self care, and calming techniques aren't limited to stressful jobs. It's an episode that can speak to anyone. Give a listen and be kind to your mind.

If you have more questions for Amber, reach out to either of the Idiots and they can put you in contact. If we get enough questions about mental health in general, we may compile them into another episode with Amber.

Vet Tech Schoolin'11 Mar 202501:00:16

Have you ever wanted to be the workhorse of a veterinary hospital? Do all the work for the veterinarians but get none of the credit and a fraction of the pay? Do you want to get scratched and bit by patients routinely? If this sounds amazing to you, then listen to this episode of the path it takes to become a veterinary technician. Jokes aside, they are the lifeblood of any hospital, and a vital piece to the wellbeing of all pets. Our new favorite guest, the Vet Tech Idiot Beth, discusses the way to get there.

Apologies, this episode had some technical difficulties resulting in a second episode in a row with no video and some of Beth's audio was lost, but only in small random spots. The meat and potatoes of the episode is there. Anyway, we're going to blame Kent.

Beth is a vet tech. Literature nerd. Music appreciator. Terrible dancer. Her credentials are Beth Laffoon, MS, RVT. She gave "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" a 3.5/5.

"One of the best parts about being a vet tech in academia is getting to serve as a mentor to current, former, and prospective students. Any listeners out there who are thinking about becoming veterinary technicians- feel free to reach out with questions! I'm happy to give insight on the vet tech life or provide info about our residential and online vet tech programs that are accessible from all over the world. (Looking at you, Iceland!)" -B

Women of the Vet World04 Mar 202501:14:14

The Idiots recognize that it is tough to be a woman in the world, and it can be even more for one in the veterinary world, so they brought back two of their favorite women doctors, Dr. Erin and Dr. Laura, for a chat about what it's like to be the fairer sex. The gang discuss sexism, both obvious and subversive, harrassment, and discuss the surprising reality that while the vet world is majority female, some of the worst attitudes towards women comes from other women.

Idiot Pet Myths25 Feb 202501:23:36

If a dog's nose is dry, is it sick? Do cats really steal baby's breath? Listen in for these and other myths your favorite Idiots discuss. The boys talk about why these myths exist, where they came from, and if there is any validity to them.

That's it. That's the show description.

Also, if you really like this episode, reach out to the Idiots either at their individual socials or at vetmedforidiotsbyidiots@gmail.com and ask about some of your own myths that you have heard about pets over the years.

An Afternoon With Dr. Dean Scott18 Feb 202501:09:13

Welcome back! Season 3 is finally here! We should all be excited!

The boys welcome their first quasi-celebrity, Dr. Dean Scott, vet extraordinaire. It addition to being a vet (in both senses, spending 5 years in the US Army Veterinary Corps), he is a multi-genre published author. He is currently working on the third of the "Dragon Vet" Series, with the second, "The Dragon Vet's Apprentice" released in October of 2023. He does not stop at fantasy, though. He has covered just about every genre and style there is. Come sit in on this wonderful afternoon with the equally wonderful Dean.

There is another Dean Scott who is an author, but ours is a veterinarian, too. And awesome. And on this show. Was the other Dean Scott on here? Nope. Dr. Dean Scott is way better.

Unhinged Rambling of Unstable Idiots16 Feb 202501:47:30

As Season 3 is just a few days away, the Idiots present to you, completely uncut, unedited, unanythinged, many the minis (see what I did there?). This is an absolute rambling, barely coherent, but a peek behind the scenes of how the minis were thrown together. There are moments of random BSing, periods of no talking for pee breaks (both for dogs and Idiots), and other stuff this Idiot does not remember talking about. Enjoy!

Mini 19 Poisonous, Venomous, and Semantics04 Feb 202500:05:25

This mini discusses animals that are poisonous or venemous, and some that are both. Also, they argue over when something goes from being venemous to poisonous, or vice verse. Cory usually works his magic to annoy Kent, but he's in fine form in this one.

Mini 18 Client/Dogtor Relationships31 Jan 202500:19:04

We've touched on this before, but it's a good topic for all to be reminded on. The relationship with a client and vet is very important. Be open, be kind, be honest. Don't be a jerk. Don't try to guilt trip. They're doing the best they can for your pets, and you being a monster is going to only make the animal suffer. These vets are humans. Also, as they are humans, do remember there are established boundaries that must be kept. They may love your pet, your pleasant disposition, your behavior, and your business, but they may not necessarily want to be best friends with you. Nothing personal, just, it's their life and sometimes needs to be kept private.

Mini 17 Embarrassing Moments and Antibiotic Stewardship28 Jan 202500:09:26

In this, Kent discusses some embarrassing moments in hospital rooms and then dives into antibiotics (and other drugs) for pets. You don't know better than your vet, please don't tell them they need to give you antibiotics without consult. Thanks!

H5N1 Of Those Days, Bird Flu27 Jan 202501:09:43

Surprise episode drop!!! Special Preseason to Season 3 Ep!

The Idiots are back with your favorite large animal Idiot Vet, Dr. Erin Masur, and they're talking bird flu. There is so much misinformation, fear, and general confusion right now, and Dr. Erin is setting things straight. Cold hard facts and reality of what is going on, how it will impact prices of eggs, milk, and anything that contains either, and why burying this information is, at best irresponsible, and at worst, critically dangerous. This is an episode you will not want to miss.

Tuberculosis Sucks21 Oct 202500:51:46

Keeping the Spooky Season eps rolling, Idiots Cory and Doctor Kent discuss Tuberculosis and the foundation of the modern vampire that has come from it. That's basically it. They talk about how not sexy tuberculosis is, both in what it does to the body (not just the lungs) and the bacterium. Stay vaccinated, stay safe, and don't handle dead bodies that died of an unknown disease without PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

Also, Ellis makes another guest appearance.

Mini 16 Separation Anxiety24 Jan 202500:04:33

This mini touches on separation anxiety, and some of the things you can do to help it. Oh, and a touching (and terrifying) story about Tazer.

Mini 15 Puppy Vaccination Schedule21 Jan 202500:08:54

Finally, back to talking about animals, right? The Idiots discuss the puppy vaccination schedule, from birth to being an adult dog.

Mini 14 Classic Cocktails17 Jan 202500:03:51

Barkeep Kent gives two classic drink recipes for taking the edge off a stressful day.

Mini 13 The Great Idiot Animal War14 Jan 202500:08:14

Similar to the previous mini, the Idiots discuss what 2 they would pick to defend themselves against all the others.

15 wolves

3 Kodiaks

5 Silverback gorillas

15 wolves

10k rats

1 hunter with a rifle

4 Lions

10 crocodiles

Also, must add in case there are morons out there, this is all hypothetical, as was the previous episode, and we are not condoning hurting animals or making the animals hurt each other. Please, don't do that. If you consider hurting animals for fun, please seek help.

Mini 12 Idiots Vs Animals10 Jan 202500:08:21

Very simple premise to this episode- what is the largest animal that you think you could take in a fight? Let's be real, humans, we're kind of useless meat sacks compared to most animals out there.

Mini 11 The Boring Dogtor Life07 Jan 202500:05:13

Another ep about personal things, this one very quick about what Kent does to relax. Nothing much, and more about the podcasts he enjoys.

Mini 10 The Idiot Songwriter03 Jan 202500:08:52

Alright, an episode that really matters. This one talks about Cory's music. It's pretty fun, and far away from animals medicine. Don't worry, we're going back to that soon enough.

Mini 9 Common Idiot Meets Dogtor Idiot02 Jan 202500:11:59

New Year, New Mini. Well, a day late. Doing our second wave of minis, and working more fan requests (still such a weird thing to hear), we regale you on the story of when we met. It's really not that fascinating. Just know that Frank Turner is amazing and that Angela Bassett herself made this happen.

Mini 8 NHL Icons and Other Hockey Ramblings12 Dec 202400:40:32

Mini...kinda. We screwed up. We discussed our favorite hockey players. We're Idiots, but we're also sports nerds, especially when it comes to hockey. It's long, but sorta entertaining in the way we are usually sorta entertaining. But it's still a mini in the sense it's shorter than MOST of our normal episodes.

Mini 7 Gross Old Situation09 Dec 202400:09:37

Mini again, this time, the grossest things Kent has seen in the workforce. Rachel, come get your Idiot!

Cryptid Med For Idiots Part 2: The Cryptiding14 Oct 202501:01:48

Spooky season is halfway over, and the Idiots aren't going to let it go without a bite...of spooky! The boys discuss a few new cryptids, and talk about why they will not touch a skinwalker-out of respect.

Mini 6 Movie Night!06 Dec 202400:18:21

We have had people ask to get to know The Idiots better. We are using minis to try to let people know a little more about us. This one is about our favorite movies.

It goes without saying that our favorite movies we say are right after the last Angela Bassett movie. However many movies she has done, our number 1s start after that last movie of hers.

Mini 5 Say No To Fighting04 Dec 202400:07:54

Emergency talk still...what to do when your pet gets into a scrap.

Mini 4 Hot Dog Summer29 Nov 202400:03:57

Hot dog! But not the Frankfurter version. Emergency help for an overheated dog!

Mini 3 HBC25 Nov 202400:05:29

Mini talking about blunt force trauma, specifically hit by cars.

Mini 2 Poison is not Just Bret Michael's Band22 Nov 202400:10:14

Second Mini episode, what to do when your pet gets ahold of poison!

Holiday Season Foods for Doggo21 Nov 202401:12:25

Happy Holidays!!!! With the holiday season coming up, we know it is important to have a reminder of what is safe and unsafe for your favorite pooch to eat. Encompassing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all other feasts from now til the end of the year, it is very common for vet visits to spike after these days due to dogs being exposed to too many different foods.

In a first, the Idiots are in person together. As they have always attempted to make this show feel like you are sitting around a dining room table having a drink and talking with them, they lean entirely into it. This is an entirely uncut episode, every awkward pause, every grumble from the dogs, background noise, even a couple interruptions from friend of the show and wife of Cory, Amber, the Brainwitch Idiot, to bring delicious macarons. This is as close as hanging with the Idiots as you can get. Plus, you get to avoid smelling Mutie's noxious gas drops.

Mini 1 Liquid Brown17 Nov 202400:06:06

We are doing mini's between seasons! We will have a series of them coming out. And speaking of coming out, this episode covers emergencies, and specifically, what to do when the poo flows and doesn't plop!

It's All Bull...10 Sep 202401:45:53

We've reached the end of season 2, Idiot Army! The Idiots close out the season in a role reversal, with Dr Kent hosting and Cory co-hosting. Cory pitches nontraditional, nonmainstream, and nonscientific medicine to Kent, who shoots them all down. Discussions include antivaxxing, amber beads, and other whack crackadoo stuff. It's a good time. They also do a small mail call, talk about the future, and discuss what NHL players Cory would beat up in a fight.

All aside, thank you for two seasons of listening. If you keep spreading the word and listening, we'll keep doing this.

Mods03 Sep 202400:59:58

The Idiots discuss dog mods, specifically dewclaws, ear cropping, and tail chopping. If you are a AKC aficionado or a 1700s hunter, you may really want to pay attention. Basically, this is it in the episode. If there was one to skip, it's this one. Normal episodes are terrible, but this one is bad even for the Idiot's standards. Cory the Common Idiot does start with a joke, which is fun. It peaks 13 seconds in.

Residence Evil With Scrubs27 Aug 202400:54:31

Howdy young Idiots! If last week's episode didn't sell you on the easy and gravy career path of a veterinarian with exciting tales of clinicals, this one will really grab you when we talk about resident work with the Resident Doctor Idiots, Dr Rigo and Dr Louie. They discuss the world of internships and residencies, the difference between private practice vs acadamia from a resident standpoint, how to make a bionic frog (we can rebuild him, we can make his stronger, faster, ribbitier), and other fascinating things. Plus, Dr. Kent makes fun of other people than Cory.

Cryptid Med For Idiots By Idiots07 Oct 202501:02:30

Spooky Season continues, and this week, the Idiots discuss cryptid veterinary medicine on a couple of Michigan's cryptids, an NHL team's namesake, and the most famous goat sucker in the world (there's a "your mother" joke in there somewhere). Listen along, and try not to be too terrified!

We mention that there is a video version of this episode here, and there will be in the future. We just have to figure out the best way to go about this. Any AV nerds out there that would be willing to putting together eps for us? A million thanks in advance!

Vet School and Clinicals After Dark with Dr. Kent and Dr. Erin23 Aug 202400:52:59

BONUS EPISODE! SURPRISE! In a VMFIBI first, the Dr. Idiot ventures on his own with Dr. Erin, better known as the Large Animal Idiot, or by the end of this bonus episode, Food and Bird Idiot. They continue the conversation from the Vet School Expectations, with a few beers, margaritas, and arts and crafts. Join them for a fun conversation, hear about more horror stories, but, see the light at the end of the table. Yes, it's tough, but it's also worth it. And remember, young veterinary professionals, advocate for yourself. Your hard earned degree gives you more power than you'll realize at times.

Vet School Education with Dr. Erin Masur and Dr. Laura Fernandez20 Aug 202401:14:15

The Idiot Army has asked, and the Idiots have sorta answered. Vet school life, what to expect. The good, the bad, and the clinical. This motley group of Dr Idiots join The Original Idiots in giving picture of vet school and clinical year as realistic as possible. It's hard, it's stressful, it's exhausting, and it's worth it.

Pay Dat Bill, Yo!13 Aug 202401:08:02

The Idiots discuss paying for veterinary medicine in this week's episode, and why the costs can get to what is perceived as high. Remember, if you don't pay your bill, you're not just scum, they know where you live. Doctors often have a huge degree (no pun intended) of debt they come out of vet school with to keep your pet alive and being the best version of themselves. If you are facing hardships, google is your best friend. There are often clinics and resources in the community that can help with low income families with veterinary care. Some food banks actually have pet medicine and food, as well. People care about your dogs and cats and other animals. Please, if you cannot afford the proper care for your pet, wait rather than letting them suffer with mediocre care, and add to your family when you can properly afford them, but should hardships strike, know there are resources that can help, both for you and your pets. Call 211, your local United Way resource, and they may be able to help. And again, google is an amazing resource. The Common Idiot uses it often to find resources for his clients in his regular job.

Mental Health In the Workplace (Veterinary and Otherwise) with Amber Johnson, MSW.06 Aug 202401:24:04

Episode 20- Mental Health in the Vet World. The Idiots are joined by Idiot Brainwitch Amber, LLMSW (and a whole lot of other letters) who discusses the importance of boundaries, mental health, and staying safe in your own head. The episode goes a little off the walls, as you would imagine with three neurodivergent people. If you are in the veterinary world, this is a must listen. If you are not, this also is a good listen as burnout and secondhand trauma exists in many careers. We also discuss the importance of boundaries and that veterinarians do not owe you anything, even if you sorta kinda knew them in high school over a decade ago. Don't be cheap, don't be an ass.

If you are feeling any mental struggles, please review below. The world is better off with you in it than without. Please, find the help you can get. We love all of our Idiot Army and do not want to see one lose to the silent killer. You matter. You belong. Reach out to anyone, and if you don't have someone, please, call one of the numbers below.
