Hey everyone! Meet Jae. They are an awesome listener/fan who reached out, has some things to say about being in the vet world as a rookie, sometimes scared, sometimes not knowing what to expect, but feeling their way through and getting better every day. Part 1 is the discussion of wolves, specifically a breed of wolf that no longer is on this planet, most likely because it assimilated quietly into modern dogs. They talk of how dogs spread throughout the world, the cause of them joining human ranks, why a symbiotic relationship was so important it came to what we have today, and discuss other things, like ring evolution (editors note, Cory talks about birds on Darwin Island and erroneously refers to them as wrens, but they were actually finches) and selective breeding for working needs. 

The Idiots have talked about what it's like when you're an established vet, what it's like going through vet school, and what it's like in internships, residencies, and clinicals, but that murky inbetween has not been breached. That's where Dr. Maddy Golichowski (or as Kent says "Gahlowzzskckksheeee") comes in. Dr. Maddy is well into her second year as a practicing vet, which allows her the hindsight of a first year without the distance in time obscuring her view. We talk pros, cons, and difficulties with being green in the field. Listen up, this rookie is going to do great things, and The Idiots were happy to be along for the ride. 

We did a crossover thing! The lovely Dr. Amy Pike and Dr Amy Learn were gracious enough to share a show with us. Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots collides with Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys, and the result is wonderful. Lots of laughs, lots of information, much of it to do with simplifying dog behavior, understanding how to interpret their mannerisms and actions, and why some things get confused due to outdated thoughts. This week, The Idiots bring on The Oncology Idiot, Dr. Christopher Fulkerson, who is at the forefront of cancer research for animals. Join us as we break down why there isn't a simple cure for cancer, the ways we are advancing in medicine, how the research process goes, and why animal research is great for humans, as breakthroughs with the former can jump to the latter. 

Also, Dr. Kent ALMOST laughs at Cory's joke, so that's exciting. 

This week, The Idiots discuss White Coat Syndrome, which is a phenomenon where nerves override the body in anticipation of seeing a doctor. Can be the building, the area, the lobby, the doctor-something just gets ahold of the animals. This can happen to humans, as well. We are lobbying for a new law where pizza and tacos are given free at the doctor, to make it more enjoyable and to relate good with the clinic. We do the same with animals! Anyway, listen in to hear about WCS, how you can help your pets get through it, and the pitfalls of failing to be prepared for a visit with an anxious dog. Just remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. 

Howdy! Do you want to pay a small amount now or a huge amount later? Unless you are a moron, I think I know the answer. That's what this episode is all about. The boys talk preventative medicine, including checks ups, vaccines, and other routine maintainence for your pet. Don't worry, they get distracted, figure out how to work Angela Bassett into the conversation, and get sidetracked talking about sharks.

Spooky Season is finally ending, and the Idiots end it with a fizzle. Piggybacking off of last week's Vampire and Tuberculosis episode, the discussion dives into more vampire legends, including the tie into wolves and bats, disease creating a weakness to sunlight, water and rabies, and how these and other misunderstandings with disease and how it spread directly impacted the lore of the classic vampires we know today. There literally was even a Great Vampire Pandemic. Fun times. 

In a season of return guests, another makes a come back. Amber Johnson, Idiot Brain Witch extraordinaire, touches on mental health again, and steps you can do to help keep mental health in check. Be it self care, calming techniques, or just being kind to yourself in general, you matter, and vets have incredibly stressful jobs. Yours might be, too, if your career isn't in the veterinary medicine world. Maybe you're unemployed or a stay at home parent. He is currently working on the third of the "Dragon Vet" Series, with the second, "The Dragon Vet's Apprentice" released in October of 2023. He does not stop at fantasy, though. As Season 3 is just a few days away, the Idiots present to you, completely uncut, unedited, unanythinged, many the minis (see what I did there?). This is an absolute rambling, barely coherent, but a peek behind the scenes of how the minis were thrown together. There are moments of random BSing, periods of no talking for pee breaks (both for dogs and Idiots), and other stuff this Idiot does not remember talking about. Enjoy! 

This mini discusses animals that are poisonous or venemous, and some that are both. Also, they argue over when something goes from being venemous to poisonous, or vice verse. Cory usually works his magic to annoy Kent, but he's in fine form in this one. 

We've touched on this before, but it's a good topic for all to be reminded on. The relationship with a client and vet is very important. Be open, be kind, be honest. Don't be a jerk. Don't try to guilt trip. They're doing the best they can for your pets, and you being a monster is going to only make the animal suffer. These vets are humans. Also, as they are humans, do remember there are established boundaries that must be kept. They may love your pet, your pleasant disposition, your behavior, and your business, but they may not necessarily want to be best friends with you. Nothing personal, just, it's their life and sometimes needs to be kept private. 

In this, Kent discusses some embarrassing moments in hospital rooms and then dives into antibiotics (and other drugs) for pets. You don't know better than your vet, please don't tell them they need to give you antibiotics without consult. Thanks!

Keeping the Spooky Season eps rolling, Idiots Cory and Doctor Kent discuss Tuberculosis and the foundation of the modern vampire that has come from it. That's basically it. They talk about how not sexy tuberculosis is, both in what it does to the body (not just the lungs) and the bacterium. Stay vaccinated, stay safe, and don't handle dead bodies that died of an unknown disease without PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

New Year, New Mini. Well, a day late. Doing our second wave of minis, and working more fan requests (still such a weird thing to hear), we regale you on the story of when we met. It's really not that fascinating. Just know that Frank Turner is amazing and that Angela Bassett herself made this happen.

Mini...kinda. We screwed up. We discussed our favorite hockey players. We're Idiots, but we're also sports nerds, especially when it comes to hockey. It's long, but sorta entertaining in the way we are usually sorta entertaining. But it's still a mini in the sense it's shorter than MOST of our normal episodes.

Happy Holidays!!!! With the holiday season coming up, we know it is important to have a reminder of what is safe and unsafe for your favorite pooch to eat. Encompassing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all other feasts from now til the end of the year, it is very common for vet visits to spike after these days due to dogs being exposed to too many different foods. 

In a first, the Idiots are in person together. As they have always attempted to make this show feel like you are sitting around a dining room table having a drink and talking with them, they lean entirely into it. This is an entirely uncut episode, every awkward pause, every grumble from the dogs, background noise, even a couple interruptions from friend of the show and wife of Cory, Amber, the Brainwitch Idiot, to bring delicious macarons. This is as close as hanging with the Idiots as you can get. Plus, you get to avoid smelling Mutie's noxious gas drops. 

We are doing mini's between seasons! We will have a series of them coming out. And speaking of coming out, this episode covers emergencies, and specifically, what to do when the poo flows and doesn't plop!

We've reached the end of season 2, Idiot Army! The Idiots close out the season in a role reversal, with Dr Kent hosting and Cory co-hosting. Cory pitches nontraditional, nonmainstream, and nonscientific medicine to Kent, who shoots them all down. Discussions include antivaxxing, amber beads, and other whack crackadoo stuff. It's a good time. They also do a small mail call, talk about the future, and discuss what NHL players Cory would beat up in a fight. 

All aside, thank you for two seasons of listening. If you keep spreading the word and listening, we'll keep doing this. 

The Idiots discuss dog mods, specifically dewclaws, ear cropping, and tail chopping. If you are a AKC aficionado or a 1700s hunter, you may really want to pay attention. Basically, this is it in the episode. If there was one to skip, it's this one. Normal episodes are terrible, but this one is bad even for the Idiot's standards. Cory the Common Idiot does start with a joke, which is fun. It peaks 13 seconds in. 

Howdy young Idiots! If last week's episode didn't sell you on the easy and gravy career path of a veterinarian with exciting tales of clinicals, this one will really grab you when we talk about resident work with the Resident Doctor Idiots, Dr Rigo and Dr Louie. They discuss the world of internships and residencies, the difference between private practice vs acadamia from a resident standpoint, how to make a bionic frog (we can rebuild him, we can make his stronger, faster, ribbitier), and other fascinating things. Plus, Dr. Kent makes fun of other people than Cory.

The Idiots discuss paying for veterinary medicine in this week's episode, and why the costs can get to what is perceived as high. Remember, if you don't pay your bill, you're not just scum, they know where you live. Doctors often have a huge degree (no pun intended) of debt they come out of vet school with to keep your pet alive and being the best version of themselves. If you are facing hardships, google is your best friend. There are often clinics and resources in the community that can help with low income families with veterinary care. Some food banks actually have pet medicine and food, as well. People care about your dogs and cats and other animals. Please, if you cannot afford the proper care for your pet, wait rather than letting them suffer with mediocre care, and add to your family when you can properly afford them, but should hardships strike, know there are resources that can help, both for you and your pets. Call 211, your local United Way resource, and they may be able to help. And again, google is an amazing resource. The Common Idiot uses it often to find resources for his clients in his regular job.

Episode 20- Mental Health in the Vet World. The Idiots are joined by Idiot Brainwitch Amber, LLMSW (and a whole lot of other letters) who discusses the importance of boundaries, mental health, and staying safe in your own head. The episode goes a little off the walls, as you would imagine with three neurodivergent people. If you are in the veterinary world, this is a must listen. If you are not, this also is a good listen as burnout and secondhand trauma exists in many careers. We also discuss the importance of boundaries and that veterinarians do not owe you anything, even if you sorta kinda knew them in high school over a decade ago. Don't be cheap, don't be an ass.
