Aquatic Medicine with Vet Student & Aquadocs Podcaster Michelle Greenfield
Aquatic and exotic medicine has been known as a challenging specialty to get into partly due to the limited, competitive nature of the residencies and internships. However, even if they say it’s a 10% chance, why can’t you be part of that 10%? Michelle Greenfield is currently in vet school about a month away from taking the Navle exam. She’s been determined to work with aquatic animals for years and wasn’t even going to let a global pandemic stop her from working towards that goal. It was early in the pandemic that she started a podcast called Aquadocs.
Plus I couldn’t help but sprinkle in some Finding Nemo throughout. All the references from the episode are below.

Sled Dog Veterinarian, Follow Your Dreams with Charlotte Talbert, DVM
Since writing a book report on Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the Iditarod sled dog race, Dr. Charlotte Talbert has dreamed to be a veterinarian for these amazing dogs. North Carolina-raised, Charlotte is a 2020 graduate from Lincoln Memorial College of vet med in Tennessee and is now in a rehabilitation and sports medicine residency in Minnesota.
We talk about her experience working with amazing sled dogs before veterinary school and her research with other athletic dogs such as in the sport skijoring – yep, I had to Google that one. What I found most special about Charlotte is modesty. Like most of us, she has had to fight a lack of self-confidence to fight toward her dreams.

Wisdom of a Family of Veterinarians with Banfield Director, Philippe Boutet, DVM
Dr. Phil Boutet's whole life has been surrounded by veterinary medicine. His parents, wife, etc are all veterinarians. So he has a natural heart for us in the profession. In this conversation, we talk about how to establish boundaries when it’s really hard to leave work and how experiences outside of vet med can help you grow. Canadian born and raised, he flew to southern California to start his long career with Banfield Pet Hospital. From associate veterinarian to medical director and to interim Vice-President and currently a director of formulary & supply quality assurance. Make sure you stay to the end to know one of his most grateful gifts he received from Banfield.

Find ikigai in veterinary medicine: From parachute kid to thriving veterinarian (Dr. Zonram Liao)
Zonram Liao grew up as a parachute kid in California leaving high school with a 2.4 GPA, but something important happened where he knew that he could give back to the community that took care of him. Right after vet school at Ross, Dr. Liao helped build thriving start-up Banfield hospitals and recently opened his own clinic in his hometown called, Sunshine Veterinary Care. During the pandemic, he started over-the-counter health solutions (Wellnergy Pet) to support pet parents who couldn't get in to see the veterinarian.
This is a story of community, a circle of giving and finding ikigai in veterinary medicine. Ikigai is a Japanese term that means "a reason for being" or "a meaning for life". It can refer to something that brings joy, value, or fulfillment.
