In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Shazia Malik, a leading consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist based in London with expertise in reproductive medicine and surgery. Dr. Malik's impressive credentials include graduating with honours, pursuing advanced training in Cambridge, and gaining accreditation in reproductive medicine and surgery at the Distinguished University College Hospital in London. Our conversation delves into essential topics that often remain unaddressed, shedding light on gaps in our understanding of women's health. Over the past year, my exploration of fertility has been fuelled by personal experiences and challenges, prompting me to uncover the often overlooked aspects of women's health. I've been continuously amazed by the gaps in our collective knowledge and realized that I'm not alone in lacking awareness of fundamental biological facts. Sadly, women's health remains underfunded and neglected, leaving many individuals uninformed about crucial biological processes and potential disruptions. While today's episode may diverge from our typical content, the significance of this topic compelled me to share these insights with you, and I hope you find value in our conversation. In today's episode, I am joined by Nikki Armitage-Foy, a renowned performance coach and the visionary founder of Electric Women. Nicky has been the guiding force behind numerous powerful women gracing stages and boardrooms globally. When Nikki was in her twenties, her well-oiled masculine approach to life was leaving her feeling depleted and feeling as if I she never doing it ‘right’. And as a release she over-ate, over-drank, over-shopped, spent way too much time in her head and felt disconnected from her body. In 2010, she did a visualisation where she ‘met’ her Electric Woman. She had a vision of a woman who emitted peace and power, she ran a successful business and had a full, happy and conscious life that she designed, true to her values. Nikki now supports women to 'meet' their own Electric Woman, to help them design their lives and access their true power. Today we delve into the behind-the-scenes role that Nikki plays—the secret ingredient in the success stories of many influential women. | 101: How anxiety affects your sex life with Kate Moyle | 13 Feb 2022 | 00:40:15
And just like that we're back and ready to take over your Sundays! I've been so excited to launch Season 10 - we've got some incredible guests lined up and it's going to be bigger and better than ever! And what a better way to start than with one of the UK’s leading psychosexual and relationship therapists, Kate Moyle. Sexual wellness is a topic that is slowly becoming more spoken about and with this new liberation spreading over the globe, I thought that there is no one better than Kate to talk to about this topic. A recent study found that nearly half of 25-34 year old woman complained of a lack of sexual enjoyment and another found that people in Britain were having less sex than they once did. These numbers do sound bleak but behind any problem there are always solutions and steps forward! The wonderful Kate works with anyone that is struggling with difficulties in their sex lives, particularly with people whose sexuality is impacted by the stresses of modern life. Kate helps thousands of people recognise their personal understanding of sexuality and sexual health and takes the view that all issues including sexual wellness have roots in psychology, emotion and a person’s history and culture. Ultimately Kate’s work is about helping people get to a place of sexual health, happiness and wellbeing. I don't hold back in this episode so it's definitely worth a listen! | REPLAY: The path to mental freedom with Peter Crone | 30 Jan 2022 | 00:48:16
This is another one of my all time favourite interviews where I speak to writer and thought leader in human potential, Peter Crone, aka ‘The Mind Architect’. I’ve been following Peter’s work for the last few years and it has had a profound impact on me along with millions of people around the world. He has worked with world-famous actors, athletes and very successful businessmen, yet what he teaches resonates with every individual. There are very few people in life who are able to sum up seemingly complex ideas about what it means to be human and make all the anxieties we face sound simple. Peter Crone is one of them. In this episode, Peter explains his famous quote: ‘true happiness is the absence of the search for happiness’ and why being at peace with the worst case scenario means there is nothing left to fear. He goes on to explain how we can only be free when we are in complete harmony with our current circumstances. It's when we stop trying to figure everything out, that we will find freedom. The product Peter shares is freedom and though you might wonder how an earth someone can sell freedom, this interview will show you how. His philosophy is life-changing and this is such a powerful conversation which I hope will help every single one of you. | ENERGY UPDATE DECEMBER 2021: Astrological forecast and what to expect in 2022 | 29 Dec 2021 | 00:21:46
Hello and welcome to a very special bonus episode with a teacher, guider and my astrologist for over 10 years, Ruth Nahmias. She is one of the brightest stars that I know and gives the most sound advice. If you’re not into astrology, please don’t immediately assume that this episode is not worth listening to. I personally use astrology as a self-reflecting tool because it either resonates or it doesn’t and I think that the stars can often provide wisdom. Hopefully this episode will give you things to think about, point you in the right direction and just raise your awareness of what we can expect to unfold in 2022. As I’m sure you might agree this past year has been a hard one. We have had to navigate a lot of changes, there’s been a lot of fear and there has been constant uncertainty. So I think we’re all looking forward to a more positive 2022! Well done everyone for getting through this past year and I look forward to connecting with more of you in 2022! :) Hosted on Acast. It truly makes my day when I receive messages or reviews about the podcast! To mark the 100th episode, we thought we would combine some of our most listened to episodes over the past couple of years and share some of the fantastic answers to the first few questions which I ask every guest at the start of the podcast. Hearing all of their answers together just proves how unbelievably wonderful all my guests have been, they all have so much wisdom to share and I'm so happy that I've been able to share these conversations with you. Embracing our full emotional spectrum is not easy but thankfully Helen is here to share her wisdom about getting happier by being sad. The Artists Way has helped millions of people and I continue to turn to it whenever I’m in need of some inspiration. | Will more “success” truly make you happier? Emma Gannon discusses | 08 Dec 2023 | 00:43:37
Today I am thrilled to be speaking to Emma Gannon, a close friend and prolific writer, best known for her bestselling books and hosting the Ctrl Alt Delete podcast. Currently, Emma lends her thought-provoking insights to the Hyphen newsletter, where she delicately explores the nuanced aspects of life. In her latest masterpiece, "The Success Myth," Emma takes us on a journey to unravel the myths surrounding success and its purported link to happiness. It's a common assumption that a bit more success equates to greater happiness, but Emma challenges this simplistic formula. Throughout the episode, she guides us towards a new path—one that promises not just success, but profound fulfillment. It's a path that diverges from conventional ideas of success, offering a refreshing perspective. Emma doesn't claim to have all the answers; she's not a guru. Instead, she invites us to join her in an exploration, a thoughtful journey that challenges preconceived notions and encourages us to redefine our understanding of success. Her wisdom is not prescriptive but offers a lens through which we can navigate our own paths to fulfillment. Join us in this engaging conversation as Emma Gannon shares her unique insights, providing a fresh perspective on success and happiness. It's a discussion that will leave you pondering and, perhaps, viewing success through a different lens. | 96: The afterlife and why we will see loved ones again with Mariel Forde Clarke | 28 Nov 2021 | 00:34:23
On today’s podcast we will be speaking about life after death with the most wonderful author, healer, counsellor and spiritual midwife, Mariel Forde Clarke. Mariel has dedicated much of her life to helping people rethink the end of life and supporting their transition from the physical to the non-physical. Mariel’s interest in the afterlife stemmed from her own near death experience when she was pronounced ‘dead’ on the operating table and that was when her perspective on life totally changed. In her book, Whereafter: Where do our loved ones go after they die?, Mariel weaves the science and the spiritual to create a beautiful, heavily researched book that soothes the soul by sharing a possibility of what happens after we depart from reality as we know it. Mariel was a self confessed sceptic before her own experience but now she is here to guide us and help thousands of people realise that when physical life ends, the love that was shared was eternal, and that love never dies. | 95: Love is not a shortcut to happiness with Monica Berg | 21 Nov 2021 | 00:44:16
On today’s podcast I speak to the global, spiritual teacher Monica Berg who is the author of some of my favourite books including Fear is not an option and the book we are going to be speaking about today, Rethink Love. Throughout Monica’s work she shows individuals how to create a life in which they are living and loving as the most powerful and fulfilled person they’ve always wanted to be. Her books combine her many years of Kabbalistic study with her own personal life experiences. She battled and overcame a debilitating eating disorder at a young age and as a mother of four children, one of whom has special needs, she has become an outspoken advocate for him and others struggling to find their voice. Monica and her husband co-host The Spiritually Hungry podcast which is truly brilliant. She also serves as Chief Communications Officer of The Kabbalah Centre International. Monica’s book on love is a highlighter at the ready book. Love is something which is confusing me lately as I’m only just beginning to understand the full extent of what that word really means. It’s far from what Disney told me many years ago. It’s a true honour to have such a profound spiritual thought leader on the show today. | 87: Redefining the meaning of love with Natasha Lunn | 26 Sep 2021 | 00:43:21
In today’s podcast I am joined by Natasha Lunn, the features director at RED magazine and the creator of a popular and acclaimed email newsletter, Conversations on Love. Her first book, Conversations on Love, was published in July and went straight into the Sunday Times top ten bestseller list. Natasha Lunn’s work is some of the most important work being done and it is all centred around teaching us about LOVE. I opened her book and on the first page in black and white, Natasha explains that none of us talk about love and yet still expect to be an expert at it. I don’t think I realised how complicated my relationship with love had become over years of bruising and I’m sure many of you might relate. After years of feeling that love was always out of reach, journalist Natasha Lunn set out to understand how relationships work and evolve over a lifetime. She turned to authors and experts to learn about their experiences as well as drawing on her own asking: ‘How do we find love?’, ‘How do we survive when we lose it?’. It is an honour to have Natasha, the author of the Sunday Times bestselling book, Conversations on Love on today’s podcast. | The future of fertility and how it affects us all with Professor R. John Aitken | 01 Dec 2023 | 01:14:29
Today I am joined by Professor John Aitken, who is a global leader in reproductive biology with over four decades of dedicated work. John has made groundbreaking discoveries that have revolutionised our understanding of male infertility and paved the way for innovative treatments. He's the author of The Infertility Trap that looks at the long term consequences of declining fertility globally. I read his book earlier this year and was shocked as I turned the pages. Never did I dream that birth rates dropping would be a serious problem, as I just assumed we were overpopulated as it was. John's research opened my eyes to a very real challenge we face, which is how are declining fertility and lifestyle choices will affect us all long term. And why? A very important conversation around this has to happen sooner rather than later if we want to change the direction. This interview with John was possibly one of the most eye opening chats I've ever had because it speaks to the future in a very personal way, but also macro way. I think it reminds us that we truly are a species that deeply relies on each other. We are so interconnected and the subject of fertility and reproduction does feel very spiritual in many ways and also links in with the psychological links in with our behavior. It's just a very human topic. So I hope you are enjoying this content that feels slightly different from the normal programming on the Unwind podcast. But I wanted to open up to share some of my own personal curiosity at the moment, and I hope you're following the journey and enjoying it too. | 85: Learn how to disagree with Genelle Aldred | 12 Sep 2021 | 00:35:28
I am joined today by a long term friend of mine, Genelle Aldred. Genelle is a former ITV and BBC journalist and the founder of communications consultancy GA\C. She is now a published author and has written a book we all need to read. It’s called Communicate for Change: Creating justice in a world of bias and it explores the missing nuisance to our conversation in the public arena at this moment in time. It’s a thought provoking book that unpacks the tribalism we see in our culture and presents a new way forward, a far more harmonious way, a way that appreciates all individuals and is a guide book to how we get there. If we want to make a positive difference, we have to know how to recognise our own biases and blind spots - only then can we understand how to be part of the solution and start having meaningful conversations. Genelle offers suggestions to help us be better listeners, readers, watchers and talkers. She breaks down the barriers to effective conversation so that we can disagree in a more nuanced and thoughtful way and stop singular narratives driving our conversation. This was such a fascinating conversation and I'm thrilled she's shone a light on a topic that is so relevant. I can't wait for you all to hear it! | 84: Braincare: How to feed your brain and thrive with Dan Murray-Serter | 05 Sep 2021 | 00:32:20
My guest this week is Dan Murray-Serter. Dan is a serial entrepreneur, the co-founder of a brain care company called Heights and the host of the UK’s number one business podcast, Secret Leaders. Dan’s journey actually began from his own struggles with mental health: trying to solve his chronic anxiety and six-month-long insomnia. He tried everything from self-medicating with alcohol, without alcohol, saw a therapist, a doctor but to no avail. But when a friend asked whether he had considered his brain’s nutrition as a cause, he decided to see a dietitian. He found out that he didn’t have key nutrients needed for his brain and she recommended high quality supplements. His sleep dramatically improved. Dan’s life is now focused on how he can improve brain care and he has created the ‘Smart Supplement’ to help others on the same journey and teach them about how to feed the brain for it to thrive. | 83: Morning routine with spiritual leader Tai Beauchamp | 01 Aug 2021 | 00:36:15
This week my guest is someone who is totally extraordinary and her energy fills an entire space with such positivity and empowerment. Tai Beauchamp is a motivational speaker, media personality, meditation leader, writer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and soon to be author. In the past year she set up morning mindset with Tai and has thousands tuning in several times a week to upgrade their minds in the mornings and it is honestly so refreshing. Today we dive into her wisdom and Tai explains why a morning routine is so important. She discusses the tools you need to create a great morning and what thoughts to consciously bring into your mind. She explains that so many of us are jumping up into our day and not preparing our heart and spirit to expect, desire and design great things. She believes that the way you start and the way you begin is half the win. It's all about being in the right headspace to get what we want and clear as to what actions we want to take. I also wanted to let you all know that I'm taking a short summer break from the podcast but I will be back with some more fantastic guests in September! | 82: How we can save our world with Mo Gawdat | 18 Jul 2021 | 00:31:16
Today’s interview is with a pioneering thinker who is on a huge mission to make 1 billion people happier. Mo Gawdat is the international bestselling author of the book, Solve for Happy and the host of the extremely popular podcast Slo Mo. Mo started his working life as an engineer and then took on the role of Chief Business Officer at Google X. I love the way Mo’s mind works because he marries the science and the logic with the spiritual. Mo does this excellently and with so much ease and harmony that after hearing him speak or reading his work, you leave with a sense of order and calm within. Mo’s latest book, Scary Smart, is another hit in the making. I’m not sure if you know much about artificial intelligence and the world of robots but this book explores what is waiting for us in the future. Mo explains its 100% fact that robots are in our future but explores how this will affect us, our mental health and the way we live. And asks the question - what can we do about it now? This book is a wake up call, a call to action, a mirror to the way we live now and an invitation to raise our game as humans to ensure that the AI algorithms that are learning from our behaviour start to prioritise kindness. So I hope you enjoy this insightful, fascinating conversation about robots, AI, our mental health, kindness, compassion and where our responsibility lies. | 80: The life-changing power of being kind to yourself with Kristin Neff | 20 Jun 2021 | 00:43:13
Today’s guest is a huge inspiration of mine and her research has been incredibly influential for my work. I mention her throughout my book so to have Kristin Neff as a guest on the show is a true honour. Kristin Neff has pioneered the field of self-compassion research for almost 20 years. She has developed a training program called Mindful Self-Compassion and authored best-selling books such as Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself. Her work has changed millions of lives and has proven that being kind to ourselves can improve our health, relationships and set us up for a truly successful life. In today’s interview, we dive in to her latest book, Fierce Self-Compassion: How Women Can Harness Kindness to Speak Up, Claim Their Power, and Thrive and unlock Kirsten’s learnings around the power behind self-compassion. We talk about the benefits of self-compassion and how we need to develop both its fierce and tender side. We discuss how women have been discouraged from developing their fierceness as part of their true nature and how Kristin encourages women to reclaim the powerful side of kindness in order to find lasting happiness and bring about social change. I know it can be the hardest thing to be kind to ourselves, and we can get easily caught up in our inner critic telling us all the things we should be worried about but Kristin’s work shows us how dialling down that voice and turning up the volume of compassionate thoughts can be truly life-changing. It’s a skill we all need to learn and Kristin shows us how. | 79: Are your human needs being met? with Dr Andrew Morrice | 13 Jun 2021 | 00:32:38
Today’s guest is Dr Andrew Morrice. Dr Andrew has spent decades as a GP doctor working for the NHS in England but 15 years ago he decided to start learning about the Human Givens approach alongside his clinical practice. Human Givens approach is a therapy that takes a truly bio-psycho-social approach towards emotional and mental wellbeing. I first learnt about Human Givens from my mother who studied the approach too and I honestly think it’s one of the best frameworks to understanding our emotional needs as humans. In this episode we dive into the brain and body connection and we discuss why physical factors can create emotional and mental challenges and why a lot of advice about health is contradictory and distorted by vested interests. Dr Andrew sifts the sense from the nonsense making it easier to think clearly about how our brain and body work together. He runs fascinating day courses which are jam packed full of learning and I couldn’t recommend them more. As Maya Angelou said - “when you know better, do better” and I don’t think you could find a more inspirational teacher than Andrew. I hope you enjoy this episode! Do you ever have turning points in the month where you feel ready to conquer the world on one day, but the very next day you feel like you can’t achieve anything? If the answer is yes, then you will be fascinated by my guest today. Amy Thomson is a tech founder, entrepreneur, author and all round wonder woman and expert on all things hormones. Amy has dedicated her life to helping us understand our hormones better, she has built an app Moody and just released her new brilliant book of the same name, Moody: a woman’s 21st century hormone guide. | 76: How to sleep better and become your best self with Jeff Kahn | 23 May 2021 | 00:29:10
This week I am speaking to Jeff Kahn, one of the world’s leading sleep specialists. He is the co-founder and CEO at Rise Science and was one of the first to publish research on technology enabled sleep behaviour modification over a decade ago. He has recently completed the largest known study on sleep and real world job performance which I find deeply fascinating and something that is not spoken about enough. Jeff’s research and work has been read by millions and he continues to empower people to live healthier and more successful lives through better sleep and circadian health. His incredible company could not be more relevant today. The app essentially helps you make behaviour modifications all-around sleep. Jeff believes lack of quality sleep may be the most under appreciated health concern in society, and his company is working to change that through sleep behaviour modification. In this episode, we discuss how sleep is the fibre of what it means to be human and how it has the power to affect our diet, our emotional health, our ability to exercise and even our vocal tone! Jeff explains that the two things you should care about are sleep debt and circadian rhythm. He encourages us to monitor our total sleep debt over time to get an accurate picture of your sleep need. He also suggests we strategise our day around the day’s dips and peaks - scheduling tasks that require more concentration around our peaks and more passive tasks around our dips. His app Rise Science helps you track sleep, know your energy schedule, measure your sleep debt - allowing people to keep their circadian rhythms and sleep debt at the forefront of their minds. I learnt so much from this conversation and it is definitely worth a listen if you struggle with sleep or if you’re in need of a bedtime routine. Sweet dreams! It is a total honour to have Ann Louise Gittleman on today’s show. Ann is a top nutritionist and author who is internationally recognised as a pioneer in dietary, longevity, environmental and women’s health issues. Ann was talking about wellbeing before anyone even knew what it meant and at the age of 70, she is still making waves in the health and wellness industry. Ann is an award-winning New York Times bestselling author of over 35 books and has recently added to her collection with her latest book, Radical Longevity. Her new book depicts a new view of ageing - one that defies conventional wisdom and redefines the ageing process with resilience, vitality and grace for cellular regeneration. The topic of ageing is important for every age as all of us should practicing healthy ageing habits and techniques to ensure we support our health for as long as possible. Ann does just that and this episode is brimming with information. We discuss why epigenetics are so important when thinking of the longevity of our health, how our body stores trauma and how our bodies are continuously being betrayed by the toxicity of our environment. While she’s extremely conscious of everything she consumes, she leads a very balanced diet and even encourages people to drink coffee (the purest kind) and indulge in a glass of wine or two! | 74: How technology is affecting our brain health with Cal Newport | 09 May 2021 | 00:41:55
Today’s guest is someone I wish I’d discovered years ago, Cal Newport. Cal is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University and the author of seven books. His New York bestseller, Deep Work, Digital Minimalism is what led him to write his latest book, A World Without Email. Can you imagine what our life would be like without emails? By 2019 the average person checks their emails 75 times a day and the average worker sends 126 emails per day - that is one every four minutes. Don’t be too alarmed though, Cal Newport is here to provide us with practical solutions for learning to live with email successfully rather than have it destroy our working patterns. In this episode, we talk about the destructive nature of social snacking and how unhealthy our digital habits have become. We discuss how it plays into our dopamine response and how it’s encouraging us to become addicted to tech. However, what Cal explains is that the issue is not the content itself but the way that we use tech as a distraction mechanism. The truth is that the more we rely on technology, the more it is affecting our brain health. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Cal talks us through the ways in which we can be more disciplined with communication. He provides us with a number of practical solutions for tackling email exhaustion, email etiquette, how to improve processes that aid performance and how to inform others about your new way of managing email. It won’t come as a surprise that you won’t be able to find him on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram but you can visit his website calnewport.com and read some of his fantastic essays.
