"The Job of a Mastering Engineer is to Stay Out of the Way" Ohad Nissim | UNSUNG

Season 1 · Episode 12

mardi 22 avril 2025Duration 55:09

For episode 12 of the UNSUNG podcast, MixedByJocelin and Matt Soczywko were joined by legendary mastering engineer Ohad Nissim in Los Angeles at Just For The Record Recording Studios.

From trend forecasting tracks for DJs to producing electronic music in Berlin, Ohad's musical journey no doubt had some twists and turns before eventually landing on mastering. At some point, Ohad signed up to SoundBetter and discovered his love for mastering after producing, mixing, and mastering on a variety of projects. After landing a credit with Lil Yachty, word began to spread, and he built a steady base of clients. In an attempt to keep growing his list of clients, he started sending 200 cold emails and DMs a week to engineers and producers. One of those engineers was Teezio, and after meeting in person at NAMM, their professional relationship flourished and they've been working closely ever since. Ohad has mastered some of the biggest records in the world with credits from artists like: FLO, JVKE, Nicki Nicole, Juice WRLD, Gunna, Normani, Ski Mask the Slump God, and many more.

In this episode, Ohad discusses his remote studio setup, his path to becoming a mastering engineer, his unique learning style, relocating to Luxembourg, 'faking it till you make it,' the story behind his first big credit with Lil Yachty, how he met Teezio, the importance of following up with people in the industry, his overall approach to mastering, the dangers of overprocessing, the qualities that define a great mastering engineer, working with US clients from a European timezone, and much, much more.
