The haunted recording of My Chemical Romance's 'The Black Parade' (revisited)29 Oct 202400:20:47

Send us a text

This episode was originally published on 10/25/21.

Tyler rides solo for this week's episode, but continues with the Spooky Season theme. And what better way to continue it than by talking about the band that brings the spooky vibes: My Chemical Romance. Did you know My Chemical Romance recorded the highly successful ‘The Black Parade’ album in a haunted mansion called The Paramour Estate? And, apparently, they ALL  had some really creepy and messed up experiences while they were there. The experiences were so messed up that it led to members of the band leaving the house well before schedule, forcing them to find a new studio to record and finish the album. Well, here's that story.

109: Bob Becker (ex-Fearless Records / Thriller Records)27 Feb 202301:01:58

Send us a text

Bob Becker joins The All Punked Up Podcast this week to discuss the very early days of starting Fearless Records and how even though he quit his real job to focus solely on the label on a shoestring budget, he’s so very grateful for and credits the early bands he signed as they put the label on the map.

Bob also reflects on the days after running Fearless Records. Even though running Fearless Records was tough and a grind every day, and with Bob having the drive and desire that he has, he just couldn’t stay away from the label side of the music industry, and Thriller Records was born.

And as with all record labels, there are times when they make the in-hindsight mistake and wind up passing on signing a particular band that goes on to be very successful. And Bob is no exception to that as he missed out on probably the BIGGEST band he could have missed out on. Oops! Also, Bob teases the next big band joining the Thriller roster. He gives some hints. Can you figure it out? Tune in to find out the hints and guess the new signing.

108: MOD SUN20 Feb 202300:47:32

Send us a text

This week, Tyler sits down with one of his favorite artists in the scene right now, MOD SUN. The word “genuine” comes up a few times throughout this interview, and it’s no surprise as this episode will show you that MOD SUN may be the most genuine and real artist the scene has right now.  He really wears his emotions on his sleeve and it all comes out unapologetically in his lyrics.

If there's one thing you should come out of this episode with, it's this: MOD SUN has never been one to do things by the book nor has he ever had the desire to be like any other artist for that matter. He is only interested in doing things the way he's always known—his way.

In this interview, MOD SUN talks about taking time to reflect on the steep incline that has been his rise in popularity since 2021, and just being grateful to be in the same conversation of being one of the main acts to help fuel the resurgence of pop-punk.

They also talk about the unconventional rollout of his newly released album God Save The Teen and the risky decision to release the album with no pre-released singles. When it comes to songs on the album, “Single Mothers”, the cover of The Goo Goo Dolls' classic song “Iris”, and "Courtney Fucked Kurt" become the main focus as each has its very own special meaning.

All of that and everything in between was discussed throughout this interview.

This week, John and Tyler discuss a few things. One of those things is about the Red Hot Chilli Peppers not satisfying their fans… Also, there was news this week that seemed a little bizarre and Tyler is wondering if you feel the same. Basically, there's a band that canceled itself for reasons that don't seem cancel-worthy. Then, John and Tyler discuss whether or not the future of music involves AI taking over. And finally, they close this one out with what goes on behind the scenes for songwriters in the form of compensation… spoiler, it’s not good.

In this episode, Tyler and John have a new study to share that confirms how to always get the number of the person you’re lusting after (so get ready and bring your notepad and pen to take notes). They also discuss the new movement for venues to stop taking cuts of artists’ merch sales. And the US is pushing for the ticketing industry to get their shit together and stop charging us all for these nonsensical fees. But we also have some Spotify news, some news about the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees, and there's a popular artist they may be crossing over into punk; we're all for it.

104. Green Day or blink-182? + Fall Out Boy now a trio + The worst genre on the planet is...23 Jan 202300:47:19

Send us a text

We packed A LOT into this episode as it was a GREAT week for new music. Fall Out Boy is back after finally releasing their new track. We talk about that along with Story of the Year’s new one, Charlotte Sand's upcoming single, and New Found Glory's new acoustic album. After reviews, we discuss whether it’s a bad idea only to release an album with no pre-released singles. We ask this because one major player in the game is planning on doing just that. But there was also news about Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman leaving the band, Sad Summer Fest announced this year's lineup, and we bring you another study, this time it’s which genre of music is the worst on the planet. Finally, we answer a tricky question: Who is better? Green Day or blink-182?

Here's a quick bonus episode! These bonus episodes are where we take a question asked on Reddit or somewhere on the Internet and answer it as honestly as possible—no matter the consequences.

Tyler's seen a lot of debate on the Internet over whether or not blink-182's "Edging" is good or not. It seems like there are quite a few people out there who have strong feelings on both sides. For this bonus episode, Tyler and John discuss that despite the song reigning supreme at no. 1 on the alt-rock charts for 11 weeks straight (10 weeks straight at the time of this recording), does that prove that "Edging" is a good song?

This week, John and Tyler debate over whether or not it's ok to wear a band’s t-shirt when going to one of their concerts. Going in, they knew they lived on different sides of the aisle when it comes to this topic, so trying to convince each other was not easy. But before that, they take the time to review some new tunes released this week, as well as discuss some old Drive-Thru Records bands doing some teasing that they need to fill you in on.

Speaking of Fall Out Boy, John for some reason wants to punch Pete Wentz in the face—he shares why. And then we’ll round it out with a rumored release date for blink-182’s upcoming album. Send us a text

After just celebrating episode number 100 last week, we are now at the final episode of 2022. That’s right, we’re taking the next two weeks off and will be back the second week of January. But we’ve got a good one for you today because we share our choices for, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Albums we're most looking forward to in 2023, and then Tyler shares the artists he thinks you need to look out for in 2023.

We have a new segment we want to try out called Reddit Asks. Today’s questions revolve around blink-182. But we’re also going to discuss Ticketmaster shitting the bed once again, and this time it’s messier than the first time. And also, we’re giving an update on the All Time Low misconduct allegations.

Lots to unpack on this one!

It's episode 100! This week on The All Punked Up Podcast, we celebrate episode 100 by drinking wine throughout the show. This may very well be a new norm for the show. Listen in as we discuss Google’s top trending musician of 2022 as well as the topic of fake music streams and how labels could possibly be the ones to blame for them.  We also talk about and share our thoughts on Paramore’s newly released track "The News". There was a weird Machine Gun Kelly cooking story that came out this week and Tyler wonders why MGK feels the need to always impress Megan Fox. Send us a text

This week, we share our Spotify Wrapped results and discuss what the recent Fall Out Boy tease is all about. But you'll want to stay for this one as we bring on Kailee Morgue. Kailee is on track to be one of the more notable names in the scene. And if she's not on your radar, she should be. Kailee and Tyler talk about everything from how she convinced her parents to skip college for a year to go all in on music and how that led to her success in getting her first record deal. We also talk about her new album Girl Next Door and she opens up about her vulnerability on the record, the songwriting process, and how some of those songs even came to be. We also talk about everything else we can expect from her in 2023 and beyond. She also says she's got a tour coming up next year with an adjacent artist in the scene bigger than her. Who could it be? But before we let her go, she answers some fan-submitted questions.

Stream Kailee Morgue's new album Girl Next Door.

This episode was originally published on 10/25/21.

For this week's episode of The All Punked Up Podcast, Tyler rides solo, but continues on with the Spooky Season theme. And what better way to continue it by talking about the band that brings the spooky vibes: My Chemical Romance. Did you know that My Chemical Romance recorded the highly successful ‘The Black Parade’ album in a haunted mansion called The Paramour Estate? And they ALL apparently had some really creepy and messed up experiences while they were there. The experiences were so messed up that it led to members of the band leaving the house well before schedule forcing them to find a new studio to record and finish the album. Well, here's that story.

94. Ticketmaster is a fucking joke!22 Oct 202200:31:43

Send us a text

Last week was absolutely huge for pop-punk as you all remember the blink-182 and Tom DeLonge reunion was made official with the announcement of new music and a new world tour. Well, this week tickets went on sale for that tour and because of how Ticketmaster is doing ticket pricing (which is what they call Dynamic Pricing), it’s causing a lot of uproar in the scene. We’re going to talk about this and I’m going to say ahead of time before we start talking about it: This is something that CANNOT work long-term in its current form. It’s a real problem now and will cause more. But we’re going to talk about this in detail because John and I have some thoughts on this as I’m sure you do too. But on a lighter note, we’re also going to be talking about Shaq and his mosh-pit record, Garbage’s Shirley Manson shitting in her partner’s breakfast, and how birdsong is the way to help anxiety. Who knew?

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, something went wrong with John's audio this week due to a recording error with the provider we use. After a ton of editing, this was the best Tyler could do. It's not that bad, but it sounds like John is in a really echo-y room. We totally apologize for this as this is not the type of quality we want to deliver. But nonetheless, we still wanted to bring you what was on our minds this week.

This episode was originally published on 10/18/21.

It's officially Spooky Season, so Bailey and Tyler thought it would be appropriate to discuss and explain the wild conspiracy theory that Avril Lavigne is dead and was replaced by a look-alike actress named Melissa Vandella. Crazy, right? This conspiracy has lived on since 2005, but gained a ton of traction when details came out in 2011. Listen to them explain the ins and outs of the whole theory and at the theory's conclusion, they decide whether they believe the conspiracy is true or not.

Send us a text

This week, some of the things John and Tyler talk about include Spotify running into another PR nightmare (first it’s the porn issue and now it’s something else). And speaking of Spotify, it looks like there is a movie being made on the streaming giant. Also, as you’re all aware, there is a war between Russia and Ukraine going on. We’re going to talk about how music is being used as a weapon over there. And then we’re going to discuss what the most torturous songs for us would be. And finally, Paramore is back with some new music and a new album on the way. Is their new song good or bad?  We are going to share our honest review of their comeback song. But we first kick things off with a discussion on whether or not bands should or shouldn't use backing tracks during live performances.

This week, some of the things Tyler and John talk about include the new The Wonder Years album. One person loves it, the other not so much. They also discuss Mariah Carey possibly looking to release her long-lost grunge album. And it looks like everyone's been saying Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger’s name wrong the whole time. Also, Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman reveals that the band began working on “guitar-based” music, but is now on the “back-burner”. So what does that mean for the band? And finally, a computer has found what the most iconic song ever recorded is. Here’s a hint: it’s a rock song. Make sure to stay until the end because you'll hear John's cat break his TV.

This week, John and Tyler got to hang out with guitarist Dan Estrin from the band Hoobastank! Hoobastank has been a band for nearly 30 years and they are still going strong. And that is no easy feat to obtain. Like a lot of our conversations, we talked about the early beginnings of the band and how they formed. We talked about how the original sound of Hoobastank may surprise some people. We discuss the band’s rise to fame, from getting signed to Island Records to releasing their debut single “Crawling In The Dark”. This week, we bring you Episode 86! It's an episode where we talk about the recent collab between Sleeping With Sirens and Charlotte Sands that you can thank The All Punked Up Podcast for. We'll tell you why. We also talk about Weezer getting canceled, but not that kind of canceled. Spotify is now getting into the business of selling concert tickets and the streaming service is planning a much-needed design update. We then discuss a recent fiery scare The Offspring crew experienced while driving down the highway which leads John and Tyler to discuss their own incidents involving cars.

Links to some of the things we talked about:

85. Spotify has a porn problem + Is Tom back in blink-182 or not? + Will TikTok be the next music app?08 Aug 202200:33:21

Send us a text

Yo! The new era of The All Punked Up Podcast has arrived! What does that mean? It means we have a new co-host as Bailey is on hiatus. John Pearman is that new co-host. You may remember him from the episode we did where Tyler brought his former bandmates on to discuss the one time they drove all the way out to LA from the Midwest to get signed by Drive-Thru Records. But this week, we aren't here to talk about the old band. We're here to talk about Spotify having a porn problem. Yes, porn. And if Spotify wants to embrace this new venture, John's got a few names Spotify can think about changing its name to. Also, TikTok may end up becoming the next big music streaming app. And once again we bring up the blink-182/Tom DeLonge reunion rumors as they heated up again this week with new information.

84. Gunz from The Gunz Show01 Aug 202200:42:16

Send us a text

When considering the media side of things, Gunz is one of the most prominent figures in the scene we cover. And this week, Tyler sits down with the guy who’s interviewed nearly all of your favorite bands and artists and everyone in between. Gunz has his own podcast called The Gunz Show where he talks a little news and does some interviews, but now he has introduced a brand new game that is taking the emo world by storm: Who Wants to be an Emo Millionaire?

His new gameshow is definitely one you’ll want to check out as he brings on some of the scene's top artists to test their knowledge of emo trivia. The game is played live over Twitch and gives you a chance to watch live AND get involved as you could end up being one of the lifelines an artist uses.

We, of course, talk about his podcast and gameshow, we discuss the current state of pop-punk and whether or not it can ever get back to the heyday it saw in the early 2000s, but Gunz also digs into how he’s gotten to where he is today and how putting in a ton of work and hustle over the years has led him to become one of the most trusted media figures our scene has ever had. I mean, the dude is everywhere (festivals, tours, interviews, you name it)! We also play a mini version of Emo Millionaire where we put Gunz in the hot seat, so you don’t want to miss that!

83. Is Machine Gun Kelly misunderstood?25 Jul 202201:59:38

Send us a text

Is Machine Gun Kelly misunderstood? I’ve often thought about this question and after listening to Machine Gun Kelly’s recent album ‘Mainstream Sellout’, I wonder if he was trying to tell us all something.

I was recently brought back on the High School Never Ends Podcast, and this time it was to discuss and review MGK’s latest album.

The overall consensus for me was I think MGK was completely vulnerable on this album. He talked about his past, his present, and all of the demons he fights with every single day. He’s dealing with a lot of mental health issues which he admits to on this album.

Now, I don’t think these are excuses for how he acts in the public eye or on social media, but I do think what I would assume is his honesty on this album, sheds a little light on who MGK is, as a human being.

Since the High School Never Ends Podcast released this episode, MGK has released a documentary that really confirmed my thoughts after doing a deep dive of this album. I’d really like to know what you guys think too, so tag us on our socials and let us know if after really digesting this album, does your opinion of MGK as a person change?

How big do you think Olivia Rodrigo can get? + Will she keep leaning toward pop punk?11 Apr 202400:16:17

In this episode, John and Tyler take to the streets of Reddit again. This time to answer the question: How big do you think Olivia Rodrigo can get? And do you think she will keep leaning towards pop-punk more? The boys have a lot to say about this one.

82. If you don't know, "You Oughta Know"18 Jul 202200:27:07

Send us a text

FYI: Tyler was having audio issues this week which is why his audio quality may not be on par with past episodes. We apologize for that.

This week, Tyler and Bailey get together to talk about how a viral trend on Twitter saw users blocking Brendon Urie for SO MANY different and unreasonable reasons. Additionally, they talk about the upcoming new series of Beavis and Butt-Head and how influential the 90s cartoon was to music genres played on MTV. And speaking of the 90s, do you remember Alanis Morisette's Top 10 hit "You Oughta Know"? Well, we know it was written about then boyfriend and ex-Full House star Dave Coulier, but what did Dave think when he first heard the song? We got the deets. And finally, Paramore announced a tour! Will they finally add "Misery Business" back to their setlist? They discuss. Oh! We're at it again. Is blink-182 back together with Tom?

Links to some of the things we talked about:

  1. Why Are Fans Blocking Brendon Urie on Twitter?
  2. The new Beavis and Butt-Head series debuts in August (watch the trailer)
  3. Dave Coulier’s First Reaction to Hearing Alanis Morissette’s ‘You Oughta Know’? ‘I Can’t Be This Guy!’

81. Taylor Acorn11 Jul 202200:37:48

Send us a text

Tyler got to hang out with an artist that has been on his radar for quite a few months now. Her name is Taylor Acorn. You may have heard of her after her most recent releases “Shapeshifting”, another single called “In My Head” and her recent acoustic cover of blink-182’s “First Date”.

After we released one of our recent episodes called: Pop-punk NEEDS to invade the Country Music world, Tyler feels like Taylor is the perfect follow-up to that episode. Because he feels like Taylor is definitely an artist that can play nice in the pop-punk world AND the country music world ALL at the same time. She comes from a country music background, but she’s doing her thing in the pop-punk world and she is doing it VERY well.

But they discuss just that and whether or not she thinks she can play in both genres. They also talk about her very beginnings, when we can expect a new single and then she dishes on a tour she’ll be in support of that you don’t want to miss!

When it comes to Taylor Acorn, Tyler REALLY expects big things from her and we're excited for everyone to hear her story.

80. Drive-Thru Records announcement + Shitting out and plagiarising songs27 Jun 202200:22:24

Send us a text

After a four-week break, we're baaaack! This week, Tyler and Bailey discuss the recent Drive-Thru Records announcement. Spoiler alert: they were correct in their speculations from the episode prior. But they wonder if there is more. Additionally, they talk about a recent ruling in favor of Ed Sheeran NOT plagiarising a song,  how the ones doing the suing got the shit end of the stick on this one, and what this could mean for future artists suing over plagiarism. And speaking of shit, there's one artist who loves to use his shitter as lyrical inspiration. It's their first week back in a while, so sit back, relax and enjoy the bumpy ride that was this episode.

Links to some of the things we talked about:

  1. Ed Sheeran wins plagiarism lawsuit and defendants have to pay his legal fees?!
  2. Drive-Thru Records announcement confirms our speculation of vinyl pressings 😎
  3. Post Malone shits out 60% of his songs 💩
