"Labyrinth"07 Nov 202500:38:28

Don't get lost, find your way through Labyrinth with the help of Uncultured Twenties!

The 1986 fantasy film is an autumnal watch, with it's longevity resting on the thoughtful character design and nostalgic vibe created by Jim Henson of The Muppets.

Full of references to classical literature, Labyrinth is a treasure hunt for '80s lovers. From cultural icon David Bowie as the goblin king, to a young Jennifer Connelly, the gained a large cult following after it's lukewarm release.

Will you join the goblin king?

"Rumours"26 Oct 202500:47:15

The rumours are true...Uncultured Twenties is back! In this series opener, Lian and Julia discuss the heart-breakingly honest album Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

Go into any analog fanatic's collection, and you'll be sure to find this vinyl from 1977. From being inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame to Bill Clinton's presidential campaign soundtrack to inspiring Emmy-nominated miniseries Daisy Jone & the Six, the album is reflected in multiple decades of pop culture.

With fans still hypothesizing the relationships between the members, it's no wonder Rumours has intrigued generations. Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll at it's finest!

We’re excited to be back on a less-than-regular schedule. Just like Fleetwood Mac, we’re turbulent. Not in a romantic way, but more in a life-is-crazy-help-us kind of way. And we love each other through it! Follow us on socials to keep up with new episodes:

"Twilight"24 May 202400:28:31

No one can deny that Twilight has had a major cultural impact. From tattoos to dolls to museums to parody films, the book turned film series is multi-billion dollar industry that is still active today.

In this series opener, Lian and Julia indulge in their Twihard roots while examining the disturbing undertones and outright racism.

Maybe there is a better love story than Twilight...

In anticipation of tomorrow’s release, we present a double feature! This episode covers the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doer and Shawn Levy’s upcoming Netflix mini-series adaptation.

The adaptation is highly anticipated by millions of readers, and features TIFF rising star Aria Mia Loberti, Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie. Take a listen as we discuss British accents, the difficulty of audiobooks and how to pronounce Schulpforta.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show"21 Oct 202300:20:22

Happy Halloween! We're doing the time warp and uploading something scary: our FIRST EVER recorded episode!

RHPS is a definition cult classic. Hated by the mainstream, but adopted by the fringe. It's been parodied and referenced by Glee, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, That '70s Show, The Simpsons and so many more. The film is often accompanied by a 'shadow cast' mocking and shouting at the screen - and audience participation is heavily encouraged.

Lian and Julia reminisce about attending the show, the queer experience and their plans to go again this Halloween. Back to regular TIFF scheduling next week!

"Frybread Face and Me" ft. Billy Luther15 Oct 202300:32:13

It's 1990 and all Benny wants is to see Fleetwood Mac in concert with his mom. Instead, he gets shipped off to his grandma's for the summer. On the Navajo reservation all he can do is watch Starman and play with his action figures, until his cousin Dawn shows up and opens his world.

Writer-director Billy Luther says this film is "a tribute to our elders" and is influenced by his life. We are so lucky to have him on as a guest in this episode as he tells us about the immersive set design, life-changing music and working with Taika Waititi.

"Stop Making Sense" 07 Oct 202300:28:58

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this is a podcast!

We recount The Talking Heads’ classic concert movie. Originally directed by Jonathan Demme in 1983, the 4K restoration premiered at TIFF with a live Q&A hosted by Spike Lee.

The new wave band made 4 albums in 4 years, though their time was cut short by internal drama and power dynamics. Julia tells us about their highly anticipated reunion and their influence. If you are a fan of Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem or Blondie this is right up your alley.

Too often have women's stories gone unbelieved, and female directors such as Greta Gerwig, Sofia Coppola and Ava DuVernay have started to change that. In this episode we discuss “Woman of the Hour” by Anna Kendrick and “Sisterhood” by Nora El-Hourch.

Content warning: this episode contains discussion of sensitive subjects such as murder, sexual assault, racism and misogyny.

"Telephone" 18 Aug 202300:52:49

In one of the most ambitious music videos of all time, two of the most influential female artists of the 21st century did not come to play. This collaboration between Lady Gaga and Beyoncé has left us begging for more...and actually coming to appreciate Tarantino's aesthetic? Wow. Their power!

Telephone is a ten minute long smorgasbord of pop culture, product placement and payback. We couldn't think of a better way to end our first season!

"Moulin Rouge!"13 Sep 202400:30:39

Moulin Rouge! is an unexpected take on the stage, contrasting modern cinematic techniques and song compilations against Paris in the turn of the century.

With references to Madonna, La bohème, Orpheus and Eurydice, Moulin Rouge! led the way for early aughts musicals. It's inspired Mr. Brightside, the Muppets Christmas Movie and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's gold medal winning routine in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Moulin Rouge! won two Academy Awards and ranked 53rd on BBC's 100 greatest films of the 21st century. It was also adapted to a stage musical in 2018.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse"21 Jul 202300:36:42

With the explosion of multi-verse films in the past decade, it's hard for one to feel fresh and inspired. Marvel's highly regarded 2018 adaptation of Spider-Man manages to do so with a masterful mix of artistry, heart and humour. Listed on the Writers Guild of America's 101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century (So Far), this animated film has cemented itself as a modern classic.

We definitely had the giggles in this episode, and you'll hear us talk about the convoluted universe of Marvel, the writers strike, and Riverdale. Why? You'll just have to listen.

"Pulp Fiction"07 Jul 202300:19:39

It's a big one this week: controversial filmmaker/foot fetishist Quentin Tarantino's pride and joy. Pulp Fiction is a film that we had in mind when starting the podcast, and a halloween costume classic. It's won multiple awards and is definitely part of the cannon (whether we like it or not). We're already bracing for a strong reaction, but it had to be done! Let us know what you think, and we'll include it in our next episode.

Big trigger warning for racism, sexism and abuse.

The Rose ft. Brenessa Roach03 Aug 202400:35:03

Korean pop has become an international phenomenon through groups like BTS, Blackpink and TWICE. The genre has crossed cultural and language barriers through impressive social media presence and online fan culture.

However, this isn't all Korea has to offer. Behind The Beat's Brenessa Roach is here to show us the wealth of diversity Korean music has to offer though one of her favourite bands: The Rose.

The Rose won “Most Promising Artist” in the International K-music Awards in 2018, performed at Lollapalooza and Coachella, and toured North America, Asia and Europe in 2023. Brenessa tells us about her experience photographing them, and why she thinks The Rose should become a house-hold name!

"Archie Comics" and "Riverdale"19 Jul 202400:35:46

Over the past 80 years, Archie Comics have shaped comics as we know them today. They have garnered awards, memorabilia and collaborations with their iconic characters...particularly the Archie/Betty/Veronica love triangle.

Though the story and it's spinoffs have been adapted for television multiple times, none of them have captured the world's attention quite like Riverdale. With a reputation of “so bad it’s good”, Riverdale became one of the most popular shows worldwide on Netflix for it's campy interpretation of the beloved Archie Comics.

"Be The Cowboy" ft. Karen K. Tran06 Jul 202400:42:40

What does Be The Cowboy mean? To our guest Karen K. Tran, it means embodying the confident spirit of a man and owning a room. Rebuking stereotypes and fetishism.

Mitski's Grammy-nominated album was Pitchfork's top album of 2018. Her music is emotion driven and cinematic, informed by her mixed-race identity. This album in particular features upbeat pop-inspired songs with lyrics of desire and loneliness.

Karen tells us about her experience photographing Mitski, post-pandemic concert crowds and toxic artist-listener relationships in this lush episode!

"Christmas Island"21 Jun 202400:44:48

In this episode we get a little peek into Julia's personal lore, and Lian's grudge against The Mod Club.

AJJ (Formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad) is a band that is known for wordy lyrics, exciting instrumentation and transcending genre. "Christmas Island" is the fifth studio album in their 20 year long career, and confronts themes of grief, surrealism and acceptance.

This album is a sign of change with the band, introducing new members and a departure from previous 'folk-punk' sounds. While die-hard fans might favour their earlier albums, Christmas Island is a great introduction to AJJ's music.

"Tracy Chapman"26 Jan 202600:47:05

Simple instrumentation and a powerful voice. Tracy Chapman’s 1988 debut album exploded on the scene when she appeared at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday tribute concert, quickly gaining critical acclaim and breaking records. Informed by her childhood in Ohio as a working-class Black lesbian, this folk-inspired album still resonates heavily today.

Her hit song ‘Fast Car’ came back into public consciousness when country singer Luke Combs covered it in 2023, leading Chapman to break additional records (first Black songwriter to ever win a country music association award: song of the year) and us wondering why that is still happening in this day and age…

For a musician that is so private about her life, Tracy Chapman lays it all on the line with this brutally honest album. It is a must listen!
