103: Why It's Powerful & Easy To Question The Default in Weddings with Ashlee Bunney Celebrant26 Aug 202400:30:05

Can you remember a time when you felt left out of a group? Maybe your friends got together and you weren’t invited, but then you saw them post a photo on socials, or you weren’t chosen for a sporting team or a project even though you know you would’ve been brilliant.

It stung, didn’t it?

As simplistic as it is, inclusivity in weddings can be as easy as allowing everyone to feel seen, valued and welcome.

I know you’re kind, but also, you don’t have a lot of spare time. You’d love to be an ally but also don’t want to have to take a short course on it. Right?

Today Ashlee is going to share:

  • what the gendered language and terms are in weddings,
  • why weddings need to evolve away from the default, and
  • how you can challenge norms to make your wedding more inclusive.

94: One Click (No App) To Collect Your Wedding Guest's Photos And Videos with Never Miss Moments24 Jun 202400:32:50

What are your wedding memories worth to you?

One of the most frequently asked questions that I hear is, how can I easily and securely collect and save the photos that my guests take in the leadup and on my wedding day?

Some people use Facebook groups, but then others won’t go near Facebook, others will use Dropbox, but then realise too late that they’ve run out of storage. And please rest assured that hashtags are dead as well.

So when I heard that serial overachiever, Travis Cornish, had solved this predicament for you, I knew I had to get him to explain it to you himself.

In this episode, Travis will teach you:

  • The simplest way to get your wedding guests to share their photos and videos with you,
  • plus how to get as many of your guests to participate and be motivated to actually DO IT (because, just in case you didn’t know, getting wedding guests to share photos and videos in the past, has been like pulling teeth).

05: Laura & Ed - The pros of a small wedding ceremony and a big reception party26 Sep 202200:31:10

Not thrilled about the idea of sharing your most private emotions in front of a stack of people on your wedding day? Recently married Adelaide couple, Laura and Ed felt exactly the same way.

In Episode 5 of the Unbridely Modern Wedding Planning podcast we chat with Ed and Laura about how a big traditional wedding didn't excite them and their compromise of an intimate wedding ceremony during the day and a big surprise party that same night.

Your host, Celebrant and founder of Unbridely, Camille Abbott, delves into their planning choices around how they chose to reveal the surprise to their loved ones, the big budget advantages to doing a wedding the same way and a couple of less than perfect moments that happened on their wedding day that they couldn't fix, but they rolled with anyway.

93: How Your Strengths Determine Whether You Need A Planner, Stylist or Coordinator17 Jun 202400:29:52

There are 3 big roles in your wedding which, should you have some strength or previous experience, you may choose to do all by yourself.

And they are wedding planner, wedding stylist and wedding coordinator.

But for those without the personality type, skills, connections, time and energy, taking on these responsibilities can seriously affect how you enjoy the lead-up to your wedding, your stress levels, whether or not you can stick to your budget, and also more crucially, how you experience the day itself.

In this episode, you will learn:

1)        the responsibilities and roles that a wedding planner, wedding stylist and wedding coordinator fulfil in your wedding, and then

2)        the personal skills and strengths, experience and talent you need to have to ensure you’ve got their role covered if you choose not to hire a pro for your wedding.

92: Is Changing Your Name After Marriage What You Really Want?10 Jun 202400:28:53

While in the past, a woman changing her last name to adopt her husband’s surname after getting married was expected in many countries and cultures, it’s not the case any more.

Many of the couples I marry want to know how to make a decision on whether or not to change their last name or names and what it means for their career, family life, their parents and their identity.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • a brief history about the custom of changing last names after marriage,
  • what the expectations are around the world,
  • the pros of changing your last name,
  • what the options are in a mixed orientation marriage,
  • the potential downsides of changing your birth last name, plus
  • a few handy questions to think about before you make your final decision.

87: Pt1 - Why Modern Wedding Etiquette Matters & Social Dilemmas with Jamila Musayeva06 May 202400:35:39

Have you ever felt like your wedding planning is a test that you didn’t study for?

OR

That there are rules and expectations about weddings that you had no idea about until you got engaged?

If so, you are not alone.

The unspoken etiquette of weddings trips up a lot of unsuspecting couples and trust me when I say that more than a couple of disagreements have happened because of cross-communication and hurt feelings that come from someone intending one thing and a friend or family member taking it completely another way.

I am excited to share Part 1 of my interview with Jamila Musayeva who is a certified etiquette teacher, a 3X author on etiquette, and a YouTube creator with nearly 1 Million subscribers, whose main focus is modern international etiquette.

Jamila’s approach intertwines personal development, female empowerment, and cultural appreciation, and strikes a delicate balance between progressive living and preserving traditions.

Today Jamila is going to teach you:

· What part modern etiquette plays in weddings,

· Who defines the rules of etiquette, and

· Who pays for and/or organises the engagement party and wedding events.

86: 5 Important Questions To Ask On Your Wedding Venue Tour29 Apr 202400:25:56

There’s a saying in the wedding industry: “if you don’t have a venue booked, you don’t have a wedding date”. It’s all about putting a where to your why.

If you, like me, have decided to plan your own wedding and can't afford to take advantage of a professional wedding planner’s immense knowledge, experience and contacts list, then you want to go into the search for your wedding venue with your eyes wide open.

I have created a checklist for you to go through with each of your wedding venues so you know that you are asking the right questions and recording the answers so you don’t forget them too! And you can DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE WEDDING VENUE BOOKING CHECKLIST PDF HERE.

But today you’re going to learn about 5 extra questions. 5 Qs that are over and above the basic, but are pretty important when it comes to you and your guests, enjoyment, safety, ease of setup and matching your vision with the reality of what your venue can truly offer and will look like with your budget in mind.

85: Is A Seating Chart Absolutely Necessary For Your Wedding?22 Apr 202400:29:52

Is A Seating Chart Absolutely Necessary For Your Wedding?

The short answer is, it depends.

While I know that’s not what you want to hear, it’s pretty freeing when you work out that ultimately, it is up to you, your fiancé and just a few other considerations as well.

Today, I’m going to teach you:

·    the pros and cons of having allocated seating and a seating chart, escort cards or place cards for your wedding reception,

·    the pros and cons of having an unallocated seating arrangement where your family and friends can choose where they want to sit and with whom, and finally,

·    the 3 things you need to consider before you decide on which way is best for you, your fiancé and your guests.

102: How To Keep The Peace - Question In Private, Honour In Private19 Aug 202400:20:49

Has someone said this to you yet?

  • Our family doesn’t have kid-free weddings,
  • You have to invite all of your Aunties and Uncles, or
  • It’s not a real wedding without a sit-down dinner, open bar, DJ etc.

At the end of the day, as long as you and your fiancé are happy, what do the opinions of others matter anyway?

I think it matters a lot.

So if you’re avoiding conflict or feel like you’re being pulled in 3 different directions at once by everyone’s expectations and opinions, or you’re having trouble sleeping at night because your brain is in overdrive, this episode is for you.

I’d like to share with you how I try to deal with conflict and have difficult conversations without completely severing ties with the people that I love.

I hope this approach helps you with some of the dynamics of your family or friend groups and makes your wedding planning experience a little more smooth and a lot less stressful.

What do you think the most frequently repeated sentence about weddings is?

I reckon I know what it is: “It all goes by so fast”.

-     the benefits and why you might want to journal during your engagement and wedding planning (HINT: it is SUPER worth your time)

-      how bullet journalling and wedding binders aren’t worth your time

Recently, I've been chatting with some wedding planners and venue owners about the wedding vendor code and how it can impact engaged couples, just like you, as you go about choosing, booking in, questioning and receiving the products and services that are presented to you.

I want you to be aware of some of the downfalls that the vendor code has so you can make sure you are getting the full story about your vendors’ capabilities, capacity and professionalism.

I'd love to share with you today, first of all, what the wedding vendor code is, and secondly, the red flags you should be keeping your eye out for that might suggest that someone does not have your best interests at heart.

80: Why Your Wedding Vows Matter And The Biggest Vows Secret18 Mar 202400:17:04

Does this sound like you?

  • I can't express myself very well.
  • I'm no good at writing.
  • I'd be too embarrassed to read them in front of everyone.
  • What's the point in sharing them with everyone? My fiancé already knows how I feel and it's no one else's business anyway.

Writing your own personalized wedding vows is more popular than ever. I'm always more than thrilled to help engage couples and show them a simple way to write their very own unique and meaningful vows. And there are several reasons why I'm so passionate about this, which I'd love to share with you today.

Personal, unique vows that no one else in the world could make but you, have so much power, value, intention and emotion, and are in fact, an investment into your relationship.

What I'd love for you to realise from this episode is the amazing opportunity you have with your wedding vows, to actually be excited to write them and be proud to say them too.

74: How The Increasing Costs For Bridesmaids Is Ruining Friendships05 Feb 202400:33:25

When a bridesmaid says ‘yes’ to a bride, they must communicate clearly and early about expectations for commitment, assigned responsibilities and especially the costs.

But it’s also essential for the bride to be aware of what she’s really asking of her family and friends when she excitedly proposes to them to be in her wedding party in the first place.

The sentiment of friendship, closeness and fun that a bride may anticipate might not be reflected in real life and at the extremes, I’ve heard of many friendships and family relationships that have ended up destroyed beyond repair when the fairytale doesn’t match what happens when money, responsibilities, time constraints and close relationships all mix into one high-pressure and emotional life-altering event.

The stakes are high, people.

So this week, I’m going to delve deep into:

  • The traditional role of bridesmaids and how they've changed,
  • Some examples of the costs you can expect as a bridesmaid,
  • What’s reasonable as far as expectations of a bridesmaid and how to communicate that, and
  • My top tips for the bride and the bridesmaids they choose.

73: What Really Changes After You Get Married? with The Relationship Circle29 Jan 202400:35:50

Have you ever asked yourself why you want to get married (with the subtext being, if nothing really changes anyway)?

In 2019 according to the Pew Research centre:

“The decision to get married is a personal one, but for most married adults, love and companionship trump other considerations such as such as the desire to have children someday, convenience or finances.”

But there are some other legal aspects to consider too, including in Australia: that marriage revokes a will unless it was created ‘in contemplation of marriage’, marriage spouses automatically become each other's next of kin, income tax changes, and there could be changes in future property settlements, survivor benefits, health insurance payments and claims, custody of children, maintenance payments and even inheritance.

But you want to know, when you wake up the day after your wedding, what happens then?

Dating and Relationship coach, Beck Thompson, from The Relationship Circle is going to teach you:

  • The changes couples experience once they get married
  • Why you need to work out and talk about your (sometimes) unconscious expectations
  • How to start the discussion about traditional or gender roles and responsibilities, and
  • Understanding the significance of changing your last name after you get married.

72: How To Be Calm, Prepared, Present & Receptive - Wedding Ceremony Foundations22 Jan 202400:41:54

Given that I believe 99% of couples want these four things, this is what I'd like to get down to the crux of in this episode:

  • feeling calm,
  • feeling prepared,
  • being present, and
  • being receptive.

Calm, means an internal knowing that everything is going as it should.

Being prepared means that you’ve designed a ceremony that fits you and your fiancé, rather than having something pushed upon you. Being able to assert yourself ahead of time, I think is absolutely crucial.

Being present in your ceremony, emotionally and also in the way that you are reacting to things. So really seeing, hearing all the senses, touching, feeling, smelling, all of those things, drinking it all in.

And receptive, as in being able to reciprocate and interact with your fiancé and your guests.

So in this episode, I'm gonna go through lots of little checkpoints.

Some of them will really stick with you and you'll go, oh God, write that down. And some other things you might go, "I don’t even care if it's gonna happen or not".

This is a bit of a workshop episode for your wedding ceremony.

I hope is super valuable for you.

You want to have their technical expertise and people with great energy who will not only do their job, but help you to get excited too.

You want to choose the right wedding vendor team the first time around because it’s also super uncomfortable to have to let a vendor go, and because of contracts, potentially costly as well.

67: How To Write A Memorable And Gracious Wedding Speech For Your Own Wedding with Authentically Funny Speeches04 Dec 202300:38:33

I reckon the 3 most likely reasons you’re avoiding writing your wedding speech are:

1) You’re imagining it’s going to be really hard,

2) You’re worried about being judged or criticised, OR

3) You just don’t know where to start and are overwhelmed.

Beth from Authentically Funny Speeches has heard it all, though.

And she is the very first Unbridely Modern Wedding Planning Podcast guest that I’ve invited back for a second time (so far) because her first episode receives a huge amount of downloads and you love her advice.

With her years and years of experience, clear explanations and sensitivity to the complexities of family and friend relationships (you know what I mean – your life wouldn’t be worth living if you didn’t mention a CERTAIN person in your speech) Beth will set you on the right track and make you and your new husband, wife or spouse seem like the most generous, warm, and remarkable newlyweds ever.

In this episode, Beth teaches you:

· What makes a great speech including the order you want to thank people in, how long it should go for and the incredible benefits of going last, PLUS

· A few comedic tools to bring out when you really want to get the laughs

· What to do if 1 or both of you are introverts (and I think you’re going to be really surprised by Beth’s solution).

And make sure you listen to the end because Beth breaks down her 6 part wedding speech framework for you, so you don’t skip a thing and end up looking like a complete legend at the end of it.

And if you STILL are freaking out about writing the speech for your wedding, Beth can even hold your hand through the process with fill-in-the-blank templates, speech curation services (so you write it, but she makes it better) and done for you wedding speech writing too.

65: Pt 2 - 6 Most FAQ Will Make or Break Your Wedding Day Timeline With Luke John Photography20 Nov 202300:27:47

I don’t think it’s too dramatic to say that your wedding day timeline holds the key to much of the success of your wedding day.

But unfortunately, some engaged couples, don’t invest enough time and thought early enough in their planning, to build out a timeline that truly works for them, their guests, their vendors and their personal tastes and values.

In part two of this two-part episode series, (if you missed part 1 last week, head back to episode 64 and catch up) Luke of Luke John Photography will dig into the implications of a poorly thought out wedding day timeline and how a couple might be able to improve their timings to be able to experience the wedding day that they really want.

We will be covering the most frequently asked questions of wedding photographers that affect a couple's wedding day timeline.

In part 2, you’ll learn the answers to:

  • How long do family photos and portraits take?
  • What is the best time to have portraits taken?
  • How long should we book our wedding photographer for? What sort of coverage do we need?

100: Pt1 - Common Wedding Makeup Mistakes & Beauty Treatment Recommendations with Gaetana Marjas05 Aug 202400:48:18

Have you considered that anywhere up to 99% of your wedding photos will feature your gorgeous face?

So while your venue choice is important and your outfit and flowers can add real impact, if your hair and makeup are important to you, it’s time to make it a priority.

Gaetana Marjas is an experienced, trusted and sought-after hair and makeup artist based in Adelaide South Australia and today she is delivering a must-listen wedding makeup masterclass just for you.

In part 1 (part 2 will be released next week) you’ll learn:

  • her recommended timing for skin care treatments leading up to your wedding,
  • how to address your specific skin-type concerns,
  • common mistakes that people make with their wedding makeup, and
  • why, if it’s possible, she recommends you do a makeup trial.

It’s also important for me to let you know that Gaetana’s advice is subjective and relates to her ability to do her job to the best of her ability. So when she mentions lash extensions this week and dupe products next week, for example, it’s her opinion and there is no hate on anyone who thinks or operates their business differently. Gaetana is not interested in creating clickbait controversy or ruffling anyone’s feathers.

And from a safety perspective, here in Australia at least and if you reside somewhere else, please do your research, only medical doctors, dentists and nurses, with appropriate training/qualifications, are permitted to administer injectable treatments.

So if you are considering undertaking injectable treatments Gaetana implores you to please seek qualified, professional and independent advice before you make your final decision.

63: 12 Different Ways To Honour Your Mum in Your Wedding06 Nov 202300:29:09

Dads sometimes get invited to a first look with their daughter, the bride.
Dad gets to walk her down the aisle.
Dad gets to say “I do” in the giving away section of the ceremony.
Dad gets to do a father/daughter dance.
Dad gets to give a speech at the reception.

And Mum gets to..  traditionally, not a whole lot.
Which may suit your mum just fine.

But, if those customs and the idea that only the father or male figure gets to be recognised, listened to and featured prominently in their child’s wedding grinds your gears as much as it does mine, you’ll be curious about how you can thoughtfully and seamlessly incorporate your other parents – could be mum, step mum, mother-in-law to be or mother-figure into your wedding and make them feel special, important and loved!

Today you’ll learn 12 different ways to include your Mum in your wedding (because no 2 mums are the same).

Welcome to the terrifying and spine-chilling 2023 Halloween Wedding Horror stories.

This is a compilation of some of my podcast guest’s accounts of when shit went wrong and what happened after.

2)        'The Ripper' and 'The Ring' from Luke John Photography

61: Micro-weddings With Massive Impact: Why Size Really Does Matter with WedShed23 Oct 202300:33:11

While large weddings are often a blast because of the vibe that lots of people gathered together can bring and the go-go-go, smaller weddings have advantages that you might not appreciate at first glance.

Some of the most intimate, and moving experiences I've had at weddings are those with just a handful of highly invested family and friends.

Sometimes it’s the smaller micro weddings and the time and space they allow for everyone who attends, that feel a little more intentional, with guests that are present and deeply involved.

This week my guest, the incredible, Amy Parfett, co-founder of WedShed, Gravy and now author, is going to break micro weddings down for you.

 You'll learn:

• how post-covid times and the cost of living crisis are affecting wedding plans, trends and timing of getting married.

• the big advantages of little micro weddings, and

• Amy's easy 3 step, how-to-get-started guide for planning a micro wedding of your very own.

60: How Rethinking your Wedding Outfit Can Achieve Sustainability and Style with Hilandel16 Oct 202300:49:46

This episode comes with a language warning, Hillary is, like me, a fan of swearing and spreading it around like seasoning in her conversation. We clicked pretty much instantly.

And she’s got some brilliant ideas to share with you about the re-wearing, repurposing and repeating of your outfits, both for the wedding, before and after.

The Hilandel owner and designer creates wedding attire with a focus on feminism, sustainable fashion and body neutrality so she is a perfect fit for the Unbridely podcast and I think you’re going to LOVE her no-nonsense straight talk.

Today Hillary will teach you:

  • The one big question you want to ask yourself before you even start thinking about designing or shopping for your wedding outfit
  • Some key points to consider when you’re arranging deliveries, or working out where your wedding flowers and food leftovers are going after your celebrations are over, and
  • Why you can maybe skip buying those bridal pumps and get something that you really want.

And stay listening to the end for Hillary’s thoughts on how the Australian wedding industry stacks up against the rest of the world.

59: Your Wedding Processional - How To Make It Your Own and LOVE It09 Oct 202300:23:22

Most civil ceremonies in Australia start with what’s known as the processional; when certain people enter the ceremony space, typically down an aisle that is formed between the assembled guests, in a specific order to mark the beginning of a wedding ceremony.

Really, there are no limits and a question that I’m hearing more and more in my role as a marriage celebrant over the last few years in particular is: “do we have to have a processional, at all?” And the short answer is… no

But this is also when many engaged couples get stuck, what IS the alternative? How can we make it our own? And what does that even look like?

Today, I’ll teach you:

  • WHAT a typical processional might look like in a non-religious wedding ceremony here in Australia.
  • WHY you might want to change it up or skip it altogether, and what you could in that instance
  • WHO you can include, and who you really should avoid including (I’m looking at you children under 5 and animals)
  • And HOW you can do it in a way that you actually look forward to and feel comfortable with, including some ideas and tips for those nervous or awkward types.

58: Yes, The Post-Wedding Blues are Real; Here's How to Skip Them02 Oct 202300:15:15

Imagine your wedding planning is like the unfolding and riveting story of an adventure novel and your wedding is the last chapter where everything comes together.

It’s when the drama gets resolved, the narrative comes full circle and the heroes (that’s you and your fiancé) have their time to shine.

But what if the final chapter of your story was not as satisfying as you’d hoped? Maybe the closing remarks weren’t hopeful or filled with meaning, maybe one of your favourite people didn’t get their justice, or maybe the ending was so spectacular that you’re quite simply devastated that there’s no more to come.

And just like when you’ve closed the book on an incredible read, finished binging your new fave series or just heard the final siren of the season, the time after your wedding celebrations can be a big letdown.

It's commonly known as the post-wedding blues.

And while it’s not the end of the world, it’s a bummer and with a couple of tweaks to what is most probably already in your plans, you can nix most of the unpleasantness and get on with your married life with renewed vigour and purpose!

So today I’m going to share:

  • The different ways that the post-wedding blues can show up in your life,
  • 9 different reasons why you might be feeling this way, and
  • How to skip most of the bullshit too!

57: 4 Things At Your Wedding Your Fam and Friends Will Actually Care About with Hannah Rose Weddings25 Sep 202300:43:41

If doctors are the worst patients, have you ever wondered how a wedding planner goes with planning their own wedding?

Hannah has been working in weddings for 15 years, but next year, she's actually getting married herself! So I wanted to know if her experience makes wedding planning different for her. What are the easy bits, what are the perks and what is still a head fuck?

And why is she planting a cooked sausage in her garden the night before her wedding?

We'll also delve into the 4 things that Hannah believes the guests of your wedding, your family and closest friends will really care about, remember, and possibly bitch about, behind your back.

Plus make sure you listen until the end to hear our take on the global wedding vendor code and a message to those seemingly helpful, but sometimes just pain-in-the-ass wedding guests who might need to back off a bit!

56: 90% of Wedding Advice Is Crap + 22 PSAs For Savvy Engaged Couples18 Sep 202300:29:24

I would hazard a guess that there's a 90%, an extremely high chance, that you are listening to and working with advice and recommendations about your wedding with information from people who don't have a clue.

With 15 years and over 900 wedding ceremonies experience myself, a background as a wedding and events manager, extensive hospitality work, and a degree in performance jazz, I can also assure you that even I don't know everything you need to know either.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • why you shouldn't listen to everyone’s advice, opinions and recommendations about your wedding,
  • how to know if recommendations and advice are valuable for your specific needs, and then
  • my top 22 PSAs or public service announcements, that I really hope will be valuable for you.
