| Healthcare Workforce Crisis – August 11, 2022 | 11 Aug 2022 | 00:26:46 | |
Experts have been ringing the alarm about the impending healthcare delivery professional workforce shortage for over a decade. Mindy & Ryan are joined by Vynamic’s Marisa Deline to explore the broad implications of this shortage and discuss ways healthcare leaders across sectors can think about addressing - or simply learning to live with - this foundational issue. The conversation begins with a detailed overview of the widespread nature of the shortage: from physicians to medical assistants there simply are not enough healthcare workers to meet demand and future projections only anticipate the trend worsening over time (01:54). The COVID-19 pandemic, which contributed to healthcare professional burnout, only served to hasten the trend (0:2:36); as has the ‘Great Resignation,’ where many in direct care delivery positions have left for more lucrative, flexible options in tech, healthcare startups, and other roles where their clinical skills are highly valued (05:11). This shortage has obvious implications for quality of delivery across delivery settings, but also snowballs into other healthcare sectors as well; insurers must focus more keenly on network adequacy and life science organizations must think about different models to provide therapeutic education to their provider partners (11:41). Despite these challenges, there are opportunities for the broader healthcare community to address these issues head-on, and we can take some solace in the knowledge that this is a global issue (16:13). We must collectively ‘ruthlessly prioritize’ to ensure that we are focused on opportunities that will have a real impact on the issue, such as subsidizing clinical training, increasing the number of clinical training opportunities, elevating non-physician/nurse professionals to provide more services, and ensuring that future healthcare delivery professionals feel like they are entering a field that will not just burn them out, but will provide them with a rich and fulfilling career (18:43).

| The Evolution of Product Launch | 14 Jul 2022 | 00:23:43 | |
Now more than ever, launching new biopharmaceutical products or indications is of paramount importance to ensuring its long-term success in the market. Mindy & Jen are joined by Vynamic’s Product Launch Service Leads, Ashley Stanley and Brian Stamm, to discuss the evolution of the importance of product launch and the implications for Life Sciences organizations and the healthcare industry at large. The catalyzing force shaping the launch space over the past several years is the sheer volume of trials and approvals occurring in both U.S. and global markets, leading to more market competition, especially in specialty and targeted therapy areas (01:15). This increase in volume has shaped the launch market by spurring activity in the ‘co-promote’ space (02:55), igniting talent acquisition battles (03:30) and creating a market for specialty vendors to assist with optimizing key components of launch activities (04:30). Other headwinds spurring change in the launch space include the high cost of bringing new products or indications to market (06:20) and increased pressure and requirements from regulatory (07:10). Given the variety of factors impacting launch activities today, Life Sciences organizations need to start early and operate within a structured yet flexible operating model that takes full pipelines into account (12:09). Leaders will need to be thoughtful about establishing clear team structures and goals to ensure that their necessarily cross-functional teams are moving in lock step as products approach FDA approval (16:46).

In our typical Trending News US episodes, we examine a few recent newsworthy items we think healthcare leaders should be considering. For today’s episode, we focus on the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson, a case centered on a Mississippi law that bars most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, a standard that directly challenged Roe v. Wade. On Friday June 24th, in one of the most consequential decisions in decades, the Court ruled in favor of overturning Roe – holding there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion. Jen, Mindy, and Ryan discuss the implications of this decision on women’s reproductive health and the American healthcare industry.

| DEI and Clinical Trials - Driving Meaningful Change | 09 Jun 2022 | 00:27:24 | |
As health systems around the globe grapple with addressing inequity in healthcare, one of the most tangible opportunities for change is the chronic underrepresentation of individuals by race, ethnicity, or sex in clinical trials. Jen & Ryan are joined by Vynamic’s Matt Howard to discuss how life science companies can integrate diversity, equity & inclusion throughout the clinical trials process to facilitate better outcomes. Better representation across patient types is critical to demonstrate safety and efficacy – it’s both good science and good business (01:18). However, truly integrating DEI is going to require more than ‘bolting on’ diverse patient recruitment practices – it will require an operational and mindset shift that necessitates an appreciation of the historic inequities within the clinical trial space (03:22). Opportunities to improve DEI abound throughout the clinical trial lifecycle – from reevaluating exclusion criteria (06:27) and protocol design (08:46), to reallocating resources across sites and focusing on tailored interactions with participant communities (15:00). Incorporating these tactics into a long-term strategy will require leaders to move away from a ‘speed first’ approach (21:30) and embrace opportunities for partnership across all stages of the clinical trial continuum (24:15) For additional information on DEI in Clinical Trials, check out Vynamic’s insight “Integrating Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Throughout Clinical Trials” and case study “Prioritizing Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Across Research & Development.” Podcast Tags: healthcare, health equity, diversity, DEI, clinical trials, life sciences, providers, FDA Source Links: · https://vynamic.com/insights/integrating-diversity-equity-inclusion-throughout-clinical-trials/ · https://www.abbott.com/diversity-in-clinical-trials.html · https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/06/why-are-health-studies-so-white/487046/ · https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMms2004740 For additional discussion, please contact us at TrendingHealth.com or share a voicemail at 1-888-VYNAMIC. | Innovations Across the Atlantic: What the US & UK Can Learn From Each Other When it Comes to Crisis Care | 05 May 2022 | 00:21:07
One of the advantages of serving clients across multiple geographies is that Vynamic can see firsthand how the differences in health systems play out in terms of spend, outcomes, and innovation. Jen & Ryan are joined by Vynamic London’s Oliver White and Vynamic Boston’s Shari Robbins to discuss key differences between the health systems in each country and what they can learn from one another as they move healthcare delivery out of the hospital and into the community setting. In one sense, the US and UK represent two extremes on the delivery system spectrum: the US has the largest private sector system globally while the UK has the largest publicly funded system. They also differ in key metrics around healthcare spend and outcomes (01:19), science and technology (04:21), and wait times for elective procedures and emergency care (06:21). Despite these differences, both systems are focused on improving cost and customer satisfaction – especially when it comes to telehealth and home care (09:05). One model the NHS has put forward in this effort is Community Crisis Response Teams (12:38) – a model that could be attractive as US health systems look to transition care to the home and alleviate emergency department (ED) volumes (15:13). While implementing such a model could present scaling challenges in the US market (16:45), it could also offer opportunities for health plans and providers to improve quality, outcomes, and patient satisfaction (18:29).

| Price Transparency and the ROI of Customer Satisfaction | 07 Apr 2022 | 00:21:21 | |
The wave of price transparency is here, with regulations like the No Surprises Act and the Hospital Price Transparency Rules building momentum. Jen & Mindy are joined by Vynamic’s Keith Sutter and Head of Health Plans, Saurabh Raman, to discuss what these laws mean for payers, providers, and ultimately, consumers. The push towards transparency can be traced back over the last decade, but the recently implemented No Surprises Act (01:44) and Hospital Price Transparency Rules (02:13) are directly aimed at helping consumers understand true healthcare costs and make informed care decisions (03:30). Implementation is not without its challenges – with providers citing reporting burdens, administrative costs, and difficulties in accurately reflecting the costs of individual “care episodes” (07:28). With a summer deadline approaching, soon payers (10:00) will be dealing with pace pressures, the disconnect between posted prices vs. true cost, and how to capture quality vs. price (11:13). Despite these challenges, there are opportunities for provider and payer organizations associated with these changes (13:47) – especially for organizations experienced in value-based care and those prepared to leverage price transparency to improve customer satisfaction (18:08).

| DEI For Healthcare Organizations: Where to Start | 10 Mar 2022 | 00:24:07 | |
Now more than ever before, healthcare organizations are reflecting on how to improve health equity and address bias within their organizations. Jen & Ryan are joined by Vynamic’s Diversity Equity & Inclusion Service Leads, Stefanie Christmas & Shannon Connolly, to discuss what leaders should be thinking about as they address this industry imperative. 2020 ushered in a “cultural reset” for the business world, especially the healthcare industry, to think about DEI in a new way (01:05) – beyond being the right thing to do, we know embedding a culture that is committed to DEI has demonstrated benefits to healthcare organizations in terms of employee engagement, innovation, financial performance, and patient outcomes (02:00). However, impacting meaningful change requires a thoughtful approach – it is important for organizations to assess where they are on their DEI journey (11:00), develop a roadmap of outcome-driven short- and long-term goals (12:23), and communicate their strategy and successes along the way (16:04). This type of effort requires a true shift in mindset and embracing new conversations (19:10) – it may not always be comfortable, but that is where the true change begins (21:13).

| Drug Discount Revolution | 10 Feb 2022 | 00:21:46 | |
Between rising drug prices, increased cost-sharing, and difficulty determining true out-of-pocket costs – drug discounting has grown in popularity as savvy consumers look for simple solutions and affordable options. Jen, Mindy & Ryan discuss this recent discounting explosion and what it means for the healthcare industry – starting with a quick primer on how one of the most popular methods, drug discount cards, actually work (01:06). Fueled by public concern around prescription affordability (08:34), discounting companies continue to proliferate and see enormous growth – often filling a market gap in consumer choice, transparency, and convenience (11:44). Discounting companies are poised to upend PBMs’ pharmacy benefit economics, plan sponsors’ decisions, and the entire generic market (14:13). They also present an opportunity for organizations who can harness the potential of increased access and empowered consumerism in the prescription drug space (18:10). | 2022 Healthcare Industry Trends | 13 Jan 2022 | 00:35:15
With the start of a new year dampened by Omicron and yet another surge in COVID-19 infections, it's hard not to wonder what this "next normal" will look like for healthcare. After chatting with each of Vynamic's heads of sector, Jen, Mindy & Ryan bring it all together to discuss the trends expected to shape the industry this year. With immense cost strain across the system, plan sponsors are tightening budgets and revising benefit constructs (00:53) and consumers are feeling the squeeze. These costs are often hardest felt amongst those facing socioeconomic inequities – and the pandemic has brought the equity imperative front & center (06:57). The pandemic has also precipitated an innovation explosion – particularly as it relates to everywhere care (12:26) – and it seems data is positioned to become the currency of 21st century healthcare (17:41). A booming senior population with eyes on a new aging (23:25) and the proliferation of transformative therapeutics (27:38) means that industrywide change will be needed, soon. | Compliance and the Future of Customer Engagement | 28 Oct 2021 | 00:17:08
With the explosion of digital channels and accompanying shifts in customer preferences, life sciences are reshaping their customer engagement models across commercial, medical, and market access organizations. In this episode, Jen and Mindy are joined by special guest Hunter Goga to how the customer engagement model has evolved and what leaders should be considering from a compliance perspective as they look to innovate in this space. Traditionally siloed interactions are evolving (00:47) in both who and how life science companies are engaging with customers (02:09). This evolution to a true omnichannel approach is not without its pain points (05:36) both operationally and from a compliance perspective (06:58). The demand on these groups within life science organizations is high (08:10) and success will require working in a new way. Healthcare leaders should be considering not only the structural implications for their customer facing organizations (10:16) but also how they can partner with compliance early and often to innovate safely (11:05). | Enabling Equity In Digital Health | 30 Sep 2021 | 00:16:53
The recent proliferation and adoption of digital health technologies is often heralded as a key mechanism in closing the gap when it comes to health disparities. In this episode, Jen and Mindy are joined by special guest DJ O’Connor to discuss equality barriers in digital health and how healthcare leaders can develop more equitable solutions. The pandemic has accelerated the availability and adoption of digital healthcare, socioeconomic disparities prevent vulnerable populations from accessing from these innovations and create a “digital divide” (01:30). Even when access is not an issue, digital healthcare tools may not provide equivalent benefits across users (04:39) and advanced technologies need to be checked for bias (06:31). There are opportunities for improving equity through digital health, both within and beyond the healthcare industry (10:04) – healthcare leaders should be considering the diversity of their user personas and the social disparities that could prevent access when developing new digital solutions (13:25).

| Importance of Culture in Return to Workplace Planning | 05 Aug 2021 | 00:13:39 | |
Climbing COVID-19 vaccination rates have enabled many countries to relax social distancing requirements and business leaders to implement their return to workplace plans. In this episode, Ryan and Jen are joined by Vynamic’s Lauren Scandone and Stefanie Christmas to discuss the importance of culture in developing and executing those plans. The past eighteen months have irrevocably changed how many employers and employees think about work – bringing technology, employee choice, and empathy to the forefront of the discussion (00:54). This discussion about the future of work should also include a discussion of culture, as it is a key driver of both team and business performance (03:13). Although each company’s culture is unique, there are several key areas of focus on the minds of organizations as they think through their culture roadmaps and return to workplace plans – communication and team dynamics (05:37), psychological safety, resilience and trust (06:03), equity and inclusion (07:45), and employee support and wellbeing (08:40). Healthcare industry leaders can jumpstart the incorporation of cultural considerations into their return to workplace planning by thinking through a few key questions (11:30). | Spotlight Trends: Personalization of Healthcare | 08 Jul 2021 | 00:18:53
Advancement in technologies and scientific platforms have enabled personalized approaches that acknowledge the future of healthcare shouldn’t be “one-size-fits-all”. Jen, Mindy, and Ryan discuss the drivers behind this innovation, and the impact on both the practice and development of therapeutics. The episode opens with a discussion of what’s sparking this demand for personalization (00:45) and key enablers of this future-state in healthcare, including the availability of data (01:57), connections across data sources (02:35), widespread automation (05:38), and proactive treatment (06:58). The potential of personalization isn’t limited to treatment paradigms alone – it can also be seen in how those treatments are developed and delivered (08:32). Precision medicine initiatives have seen early returns (10:12), particularly in oncology (10:27). Development of CAR-T and gene therapies are pushing individualization of therapeutics even further (11:47) – but there are key clinical (12:19) and developmental (13:56) challenges to be overcome in scaling the delivery of these treatments. As the shift toward personalization continues, healthcare leaders should be considering the strategic value potential, organizational resourcing, and required change management (17:25). | Spotlight Trends: Value as the Differentiator | 10 Jun 2021 | 00:25:22
Six years after the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA 2015), Vynamic’s Mindy, Ryan, and Jen discuss where we are today in the transition from Fee-For-Service (FFS) reimbursement to Value-Based Care (VBC). The episode opens with an acknowledgment that VBC is at a crossroads – the transition has been bumpy, VBC models have been “consistently inconsistent” (2:10), and the misalignment of payer and provider compensation models continues to be an ongoing challenge (3:18). The conversation then moves to what is needed for this transition to VBC to be successful; it requires operational overhaul (5:10), robust analytics, appropriate engagement of providers, and health system transparency. Innovation takes time and transitioning to VBC requires a shift in cultural mindset and a detailed strategy for change and adoption (8:10). The episode then explores what VBC means for Life Sciences companies, as the industry starts to reckon with the development of more expensive products with higher intrinsic value (14:50), including curative one-time treatments and gene therapies. From a market access perspective, Life Sciences companies should be creative with contracting and how they approach payers and providers about the products they bring to the market (15:18). Ultimately, these stakeholders will need to reach a middle ground to make products accessible to the right patients (20:04). As an industry, we should strive for “the art of the possible” (21:33) and engage in cross-sector thinking to make VBC models successful.
