Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast with Bobby Hurley - World Records To World Class Coaching

Season 3 · Episode 164

mercredi 12 novembre 2025Duration 01:03:18

Send us Fan Mail

World champion and former short-course world record holder Bobby Hurley joins me for a ripper Torpedo Swimtalk episode — from winning the World SC 50 Back in Istanbul to racing everything from the 50 back to the 1500 free, then flipping the script as a coach and World Aquatics commentator. We get into range, resilience, and how the sport’s shifting toward stronger, more athletic swimmers — plus his current role leading the program at Tanglin School in Singapore.

Why listen: Bobby’s one of the rare swimmers to master both sprint backstroke and long-distance freestyle — and he shares exactly how he trained both ends of the spectrum. We unpack his pivot from missing Olympic teams to claiming a world title, then moving into coaching world champions Chad Le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh. Bobby dives into how late-career PB's are becoming the norm thanks to smarter training loads, strength work, and mental-health support, and he breaks down the short-course tools that made him a world champion — underwaters, rhythm, and race-day precision. He shares how he prepares to commentate for World Aquatics and keep his insights sharp, and we chat about how adding the form-stroke 50s to the Olympics is changing the sport. Bobby also reflects on racing the 50 back at Masters Worlds in Singapore — including what he’d tweak if he raced long course again, and how Masters swimming reminded him that joy matters just as much as results.

Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast with Martin Bennell - How Targeted Training, Racing Practice and Heavy Lifts Turned Into World Titles in Singapore

Season 3 · Episode 163

mardi 4 novembre 2025Duration 47:22

Send us Fan Mail

Gold medals at the World Masters Championships don’t happen by accident. UK based Martin Bennell, a Masters world champion in his late 40s, joins Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast walks us through the exact blueprint that turned a six-month promise—break 30 in the 50 breaststroke—into British records, lifetime bests, and three golds. We get into the gritty details: how he trains solo three times a week, why visualisation cues beat complicated routines, and the strength program that pushed power without sacrificing streamline.

We talk race craft for real-world conditions—heat, humidity, jet lag—and how to keep your head quiet in top heats. Martin breaks down his best and toughest swims in Singapore, from an unexpected 100 free record to a hard-fought 100 breast with a blazing first 50. He shares the practical checklist he used in the call room, the technique tweaks that paid off and the smarter ways to travel, rest, and say no when the schedule gets noisy.

The conversation widens to the booming UK Masters scene: deep fields, packed nationals, and relay rivalries that raise everyone’s game. Martin sets public targets for next season, including mixed 200 relays and a stronger second 50 in the 100 breast, and even throws a friendly challenge toward former world champion James Gibson. Along the way, we explore how discipline beats motivation, why marginal gains compound—nutrition, sleep, video feedback, cycling commutes—and how to balance family, work, and the grind without losing joy.

If you’re chasing faster times on limited hours, this one’s a playbook. Hit follow, share it with your lane mates, and leave a quick review so more swimmers can find the show. What’s the one change you’ll commit to this week?

Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast - Revolutionising Swim Technique with Biomechanical Feedback: An Insightful Talk with EOSportsLab CEO Jaimie Fuller

Episode 154

vendredi 12 juillet 2024Duration 47:22

Send us Fan Mail

Can a simple device strapped to your hands revolutionise your swimming technique? On this episode of Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast we bring back Jaimie Fuller, the innovative CEO and co-founder of EO Sports Tech, to explore just that. Jamie takes us on a deep dive into the world of EO swimming handsets, which capture biomechanical feedback at an astonishing 50 times per second. These lightweight handsets analyse critical data points such as force, direction, speed, and hand angle to help swimmers fine-tune their propulsion efficiency. Jaimie breaks down the science behind the data and offers practical insights on how to set up, record, and analyse swim sessions for maximum benefit.

Improving technique isn't just for the young and elite; older athletes can significantly enhance their performance with data-driven adjustments. Using examples from swimming greats like Kyle Chalmers, Jaimie explains how force application and body position impact overall efficiency. We tackle common issues such as inefficient kicking, body drag, and excessive downward force caused by improper elbow positioning. Jaimie provides actionable tips tailored for both sprinters and distance swimmers, emphasising the importance of shoulder flexibility and targeted adjustments to prevent injuries and improve technique.

Finally, we address the gap between perceived and actual swimming techniques. Jaimie shares a compelling case study of a Norwegian swimmer who discovered significant discrepancies in his hand path through video analysis. Combining visual feedback with performance data metrics like stroke rate and hand path consistency, we uncover how even minor head movements during breathing can affect efficiency. Solutions such as using a snorkel for better balance are discussed, offering valuable advice for swimmers facing flexibility issues. Synchronising video footage with performance data, we demonstrate how a comprehensive analysis can lead to substantial improvements in swimming technique. Join us for an episode rich in insights and practical advice, designed to propel your swimming skills to the next level.

Everyone knows about pre-activation before getting in the water to swim, but how many of us do it?

Well listen into today's podcast chat with Masters Swimmer and Myotherapist - Kerri Layton, and you may change your mind and find time in your schedule to include it!

We covered a lot about swimmers injuries and how to manage them in our chat, as well as how to continue to train when those types of injuries are present.  Pre-activation is certainly part of it, along with deep tissue massage and engaging the small muscles of the shoulder rotator cuff.

A really informative pod episode that I am sure you will enjoy!

Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast with Lynn Fahey - US Masters Swimmer and Social Influencer

Episode 61

dimanche 13 mars 2022Duration 41:51

Send us Fan Mail

Today's podcast guest is Californian resident, US Masters swimmer and Professor of Sociology - Lynn Fahey.

Lynn is a vibrant and fun loving gal, who has re-discovered her love for swimming, after being out of the water for 10 years.  Like many masters swimmers, she travels a lot for her work, and shared with us the ways she adapts her training, whether that be in a hotel pool or a local ymca, to fit everything in. When in LA, she trains with a local masters team when she can, but many of her workouts are squeezed into lunch hours.

We chatted about how Lynn stays motivated to train by herself; what kinds of sessions she completes and how often. This is really interesting information and insight for all those masters swimmers out there who don't have a masters team close by that they can swim with or are struggling to fit swims in around work hours and family.  It can be done! and Lynn shares her secrets with us.

Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast with Tim Bach - Canadian Swimming Olympian and Australian Masters Swimmer

Episode 59

dimanche 6 mars 2022Duration 37:50

Send us Fan Mail

Today's podcast guest is Canadian Olympic swimmer and Masters Swimmer - Tim Bach.

We chatted about Tim's swim journey from a young age in Canada as one of eight children, to making the Canadian Olympic Team in 1972 and what is what like to compete as a 19yr old in those games.

Many years later, Tim found himself in Australia via his work as a University lecturer and rediscovered swimming through Masters, which he has a long association with. We chatted about swimming masters in Melbourne, then on to Ballarat and Daylesford in regional Victoria, where he is advocating for an indoor heated to service the Hepburn Shire.

While he waits for that to take shape, you will often find him in Lake Daylesford, taking no heed to the old wives tale about the old gold mines sucking people down under water.

A great chat with a humble guy with many take aways for pool and open water masters swimmers. Listen in now!

Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast with Craig Lewin - Masters Triple Crown Swimmer and Marathon Coach

Episode 57

samedi 26 février 2022Duration 40:34

Send us Fan Mail

On today's podcast we chat to the open water marathon swimmer - Craig Lewin. Known as "The Salty Swimmer" not only does Craig coach swimmers to succeed in marathon swims, he has completed the Triple Crown himself, starting with Catalina, on to Manhattan and finishing with the English Channel, to round out the triple.

We chatted about how he prepared for those swims; the type of training needed and the obstacles he encountered and overcame to achieve these feats.  We also spoke about critical speed training for endurance swimming.  It is something many think they would not need to include, but Craig outlines why it is so important.

There are many great takeaways here for all masters swimmers, especially if you are considering an open water marathon swim.
