Restorative Dental Hygiene & the CE struggle in Canada | Tooth Or Dare Podcast with Toothlife.Irene

Episode 200

samedi 2 mai 2026Duration 20:43

I might get "speaker" cancelled for this, but I believe it would be a worthy cause and perhaps the right hill to die on for our profession.

Trying to register for a continuing education course shouldn't feel like repeatedly hitting a brick wall. But for many hygienists, it does.

Many have given up on fighting for it, sadly.

In this episode, Irene and Victoria talk about why quality restorative education is so hard to access in Canada, what happened when they tried to sign up for a course and got nowhere, and what they decided to do about it.

What we cover:

▫️ Why most high-quality restorative courses require you to travel far to attend

▫️ The registration process and the advocacy that came with it

▫️ How rigid CE systems end up discouraging the most motivated clinicians

▫️ What it looks like to stop waiting and build something yourself

▫️ How the Restorative Dental Hygiene Study Club came together, four meetings per year, virtual and in-person, with hands-on components. Now Pre-registering at RRDH.ca

The bigger picture:

The RRDH designation has existed in Ontario for 10 years, backed by George Brown College's post-graduate program, one of the only formal pathways to the designation in the country. It remains largely Ontario-specific. This episode is part of a larger conversation about what it would take for major Canadian conferences and regulatory bodies to open access, standardize registration, and formally recognize restorative dental hygiene as a designation across provinces.

There are real gaps in continuing education for dental hygienists. Limited access slows professional growth. Community-driven learning can fill those gaps, but someone has to build the community first.

I lost my dad to lung cancer & his oral care during tx | Tooth Or Dare Podcast with Toothlife.Irene

Episode 199

jeudi 16 avril 2026Duration 25:33

Dental peeps, this one is super personal… what happens when oral care is overlooked in cancer patients? We see these patients in our ops, but what happens when that patient is your Dad?

My dad... My patient

In this episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast, I share the story of my father’s battle with cancer and the parts of care that too often get missed.

It began with the kind of phone call no one is ever ready for:

“Your dad is coughing blood.” While I'm elbow deep in a 6mm pocket during an SRP.

From that moment on, life changed quickly. Emergency visits. Hospital admissions. A diagnosis that had likely been developing quietly for some time.

The truth is, many lung cancers are not found until they are already advanced.

But this episode is about more than the diagnosis and the outcome being tragic. It is also about something rarely talked about enough: oral health during cancer treatment. What I learned, what we created and how I shared it with the folks at the Cancer Center.

If you want the same download, you can grab it here: Oral Cancer Products Digital Download from Toothlife.ca

We discuss:

⚪ How life can change in a single moment

⚪ Warning signs that were easy to dismiss: chronic headaches, rapid weight loss, persistent coughing

⚪ The emotional reality of watching a parent go through cancer

⚪ My memories of my dad: motorcycle rides, soccer, scuba diving, and the bond we shared. #1 dental dad.

⚪ How families can be close, yet still silent about health concerns

⚪ What hospitals commonly recommend for oral care during treatment

⚪ Why “rinse with baking soda four times a day” is not enough

Clinical + real-world insight:

⚪ A firsthand look at how oral health can be overlooked in hospital settings

⚪ The absence of dental professionals on many cancer care teams

⚪ Four separate hospital admissions within 4 months and oral hygiene was never meaningfully addressed

⚪ The effects of radiation and cancer treatment can have on the mouth

⚪ Why preventive oral care should be part of treatment planning from day one

At its core, this is not a story about my loss. It is a call to do better, and perhaps for us dental people who have not seen this journey firsthand to trust me and talk about this with our patients and teams.

Oral health is connected to overall health. Always has been, not new news to us, but to the folks at the hospital, I was speaking gibberish, apparently.

And when that connection is ignored in critical care, patients feel the consequences even if they don't know it. Increased risks of infections, lower immune response... the list goes on, and we discuss that here.

A simple takeaway: Awareness → Advocacy → Integration

Because patients deserve complete care, and that includes the mouth, too.

If you made it all the way down here, hit a like and share a comment. Until next time, Peace out peeps! ✌️

#99 - Dr. Kareem Osman: ”Peaches and Kareem”

Episode 100

lundi 17 janvier 2022Duration 01:16:25

Dr. Osman knew from a young age that he would be going into the medical field, thanks to his parents’ overenthusiastic prodding that he become a doctor. However, as he grew up and continued his education, he realized what his biggest strengths were – working with his hands, building things, tackling new challenges, and most importantly, making other people happy. He quickly realized that the dental field encompassed all of these elements, and the rest is history. Today, he feels so honored and blessed to be a dentist, and he sincerely does whatever it takes to put his patients’ best interests first. Most people hate visiting the dentist’s office, but the amazing experience he and his team provides changes all of that!

After attending Rutgers for his undergraduate degree, Dr. Osman pursued his doctorate from the prestigious New York University College of Dentistry. During his junior and senior years, he worked closely with the Director of Esthetics on cases that were only meant for post-graduate students. This was because he demonstrated exceptional clinical skills and was eager to learn! His top goal is to provide patients with the most exceptional and state-of-the-art care possible.

#95 -You Snooze you Lose with Dr Erin Elliott and Dr Tarun Agarwal

Episode 96

mardi 7 décembre 2021Duration 01:21:36

Today we welcome Dr. Erin Elliott for her second appearance here on the pod and her colleague Dr. Tarun Agarwal!   Dr. Erin Elliott grew up South of Boise (i.e. Southern California) but went away to a small NAIA school in Western New York in 1995 where she played collegiate soccer and graduated summa cum laude from Houghton College. After graduating Creighton Dental School in 2003, she settled in North Idaho to begin her general dentistry career at Post Falls Family Dental. She has a special interest in DentalSleep Medicine. She has lectured extensively on this topic and loves to spread the message that sleep apnea, snoring and insomnia can be screened for in your dental office AND can be treated. She is an active member of her local American Dental Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is the past president and a diplomate of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy.   Dr. Tarun Agarwal, DDS is considered one of the top dentists in the country. He is a recognized speaker, author, and dental leader. He has been featured on CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and News 14 Carolina. Dr. Agarwal has been awarded '40 under 40' Business Leaders by the Triangle Business Journal.  He is regularly invited to teach other dentists around the world and recently built a training center within the practice dedicated to sharing his expertise.   Most importantly he is a loving husband and dedicated father of three wonderful children. His biggest accolade was being voted 'Best Dad in the World' by 2 of his 3 kids.   Today's episode is generously sponsored by our peeps at Phillips and their new Zoom delivered whitening kit! The demand for teeth whitening went down during the pandemic but with the world transitioning back into real life with parties and get-togethers for the upcoming holiday season, Irene has had an influx of patients at her practice asking for teeth whitening services. Finding that her inventory was low, she turned to the folks at Phillips and their Zoom delivered whitening service. All you need is to take a digital scan or impression and send it to the proprietary lab with a prescription like you would fill out for a mouth/sports guard or night guard. Phillips Zoom will then ship the whitening kit directly to your patient. Irene then created an instructional video that she could email to patients on how to use the product! Not only does this save the patient time, but it also saves the practice time and resources by not having to have the patient return to the office for the whitening treatment! It also gets the patient onboard and makes them a part of their own treatment plan. See the link below for more information on Phillips Zoom Delivered!   https://www.philips.ca/c-e/pe/teeth-whitening/philips-zoom-delivered.html   ------------------------------------------------------   Dr. Elliott and Dr. Agarwal share with Irene and Katrina how they met 5 years ago following a guest appearance Dr. Elliott made on another podcast that led to a small orthodontic scandal and how they have been working together ever since! They discuss the biggest challenge holding dentists back in their practice with sleep as well as how modern hygienists can bridge the gap between a patient's expectations of what a basic teeth cleaning appointment is and how to encourage them to take their treatment into their own hands.   Dr. Agarwal goes on to talk about why he has implemented digital impressions in his practice, the exciting outcomes of this implementation, how many scanners he currently has in his practice, as well as the culture of his practice and how important it is to him to invest in his staff and make sure they are fully participating in the culture that he has built.   They both share how they approach conversations around orthodontics with patients, and Dr. Elliott explains what Vivos is and how she feels about it. Lastly, they provide insight on the importance of the relationship between the dentist and the hygienist and tips on how a hygienist can get their dentist onboard with wok they are interested in infusing into their practice.   Reach out to Dr. Erin Elliott at:   @erinelliottdds on Instagram and Facebook   Reach out of Dr. Tarun Agarwal at:   @tbonespeaks on all social platforms except twitter or at his podcast: Tbone Speaks Podcast     ------------------------------------------------------   As always, our hosts encourage you to leave them a rating and review!   Find more episodes at https://www.toothordare.ca/

#93 - Karen Daw: The OSHA Lady

Episode 94

samedi 13 novembre 2021Duration 01:18:04

Today we welcome the fabulous Karen Daw also known as The Osha Lady!

Karen is an award-winning national speaker, author of numerous articles and CE courses on safety in dentistry, and a trainer for practices and healthcare systems across the United States. She earned her BA from the Ohio State University and her MBA with concentrations in Healthcare Administration and Business Management.

After graduating, Karen was recruited from the Emergency Department to her roles as Assistant Director of Sterilization Monitoring and Health and Safety Director for the OSU College of Dentistry.

She is a proud member of the Organization for Safety Asepsis and Prevention, where she also served as co-chair for their Annual Conference and Infection Control Boot Camp.

This episode is generously sponsored by our peeps at the Hu-Friedy group! As dental professionals, our PPE is necessary for the safety of both our patients and team members throughout the practice.

In regard to the masks we wear though, it's not one size fits all and when we talk about protection and infection control the fit is everything! That is where the Hu-Friedy Secure Fit masks come in! Irene uses these exclusively in her practice! Secure Fit masks feature aluminum nose and chin pinch mechanisms at the top over the nose and also at the bottom under the chin to help reduce gapping.

This allows the wearer to customize the mask to their face for optimal fit and protection without sacrificing comfort! And when industry experts are recommending that we change our masks every 20 minutes during procedures with heavy fluid and aerosol exposure to avoid wicking, we could use something with a comfortable fit! Am I right?!

Learn more about Secure Fit masks at the link below as well as the link to the Friends of Hu-Friedy blog!

In today's episode, Karen discusses with Irene and Katrina how she got into OSHA and dentistry including how she decided to go out on her own with her business and her approach to get people excited when learning about workplace safety!

They talk about what OSHA actually is and how it parallels with Canada's WHMIS, and what trainings are mandatory for US dental practices as well as who in the office should be required to train. She discusses the importance of building a culture of safety within your practice and what she recommends when it comes to having difficult conversations regarding safety practices and compliance.

Lastly, she shares a story of one of the worst things she's encountered on the job and how she has pivoted her business during the Covid-19 pandemic! We think you'll love her as much as we do!
