Medical Imaging can be really misleading. What if the normal abnormality you see on your MRI isn’t actually the cause of your pain.

86 - It Was a War of Attention - Autoimmune Symptoms, Pain & Food Intolerance 07 Oct 202300:51:00

In this interview, Robert shares his story of recovering from chronic symptoms that were so bad he could barely eat anything and even used a wheel chair at times. In the last half we discuss how he sees TMS through the lens of the fear being a deceiver. He also wrote a couple books and has created a website. (see below) Enjoy! Here is his bio. I was never officially diagnosed, but several doctors and healthcare professionals thought I had Crohn’s disease or Ankylosing Spondylitis. I was ill to some extent for about 9 years, of which 15 months were extremely acute. One functional medicine doctor told me I was ‘the worst autoimmune patient’ he had ever seen. I needed a wheelchair to travel more than 200 feet. I had terrible back pain and reacted so badly to all food and drink except mushrooms, cucumbers, cabbage juice and almond milk that for 4 months I only consumed 900-1100 calories per day. I tried every alternative medicine remedy I could think of (including various herbs and supplements), but nothing worked. In the end, I decided I had to recover. I prayed to Christ to be shown the way to heal. Then I had a dream. I had recently bought a book by Dr John Sarno called Healing Back Pain, but it was left unread on my nightstand because I couldn’t accept that my pain was solely psychogenic. In the dream I was on a podcast, holding up Sarno’s book and saying, ‘diet is ok, but this is better.’ After that dream, I read Sarno and other TMS books. I started journaling and began to slowly recover. Every week I walked a little farther and ate a little more. After 15 months, I had fully recovered. I could eat and drink anything humanly edible, do 60 consecutive pushups and run a 10k in 40 minutes. Understanding your Pain - A somatic Meditation for Chronic Pain16 Sep 202300:23:07

Our fears give us a false and temporary sense of safety, but in reality keep us in a state of tension. True emotional & mental safety comes from somewhere else. This meditation can help identify the source of your fear, the function (what emotional experience it's protecting you from) and what beliefs are at the root of it. In this meditation, we listen. Let me say that again, we listen. Some people call this parts work. There is a part of you carrying this burden or this fear, but it is not all of you. And it is probably not how God wants you live. In this practice, we are going to get in touch with that part of you that is carrying this fear and ask if there is anything you can do while Grouded In Christ, to help it cast off this fear/ burden. 1. Identify Discomfort in Body 2. Identify Fear/ distress underneath the sensation. 3. Feel for the original source (story) behind this pain. 4. Listen to the part of you carrying this burden. 5. Ask what mindset, beliefs need changing for true relief. 6. Turn to the Lord to affirm this and ask for additional truth. 7. Speak this truth to the part of you carrying this fear. Here is her Bio: I am a family medicine physician with a lifelong interest in the mind body connection. I initially went into medicine because of my fascination with the body’s ability to heal itself. After two decades of treating patients with the typical medicines and procedures, I have finally found what I was looking for with this new model to treat chronic symptoms and help people heal themselves. I grew up in Ann Arbor Michigan and attended Vassar college. I graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in 1999 and moved to Portland Oregon for residency in family medicine at OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University). After years of seeing patients with many chronic symptoms we couldn’t effectively help, it didn’t make sense to me that we couldn’t do more. I developed an intense curiosity to see what other information was out there. I searched for years, constantly learning about new science and different approaches. Fortunately I learned of Howard Schubiner MD and David Clark MD and the new model I had been searching for. I learned everything I could about this approach and have been successfully using it with patients at Kaiser Permanente and will open my own practice in the fall with this model as the sole focus of my practice.

Here is her Bio: I am a family medicine physician with a lifelong interest in the mind body connection. I initially went into medicine because of my fascination with the body’s ability to heal itself. After two decades of treating patients with the typical medicines and procedures, I have finally found what I was looking for with this new model to treat chronic symptoms and help people heal themselves. I grew up in Ann Arbor Michigan and attended Vassar college. I graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in 1999 and moved to Portland Oregon for residency in family medicine at OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University). Earlier this year Emilia Cameron, age 10, was in a wheelchair with CRPS, but by April she was bouncing around on a trampoline & playing soccer.

In this interview/ video Emilia, age 10, talks about her journey of CRPS to understanding how the brain can cause physical symptoms, to healing herself through these tools. She talks about how she didn't like talking about her feelings and how she used painting & arts & crafts - to express those feelings. Then she also shares, in her own words, with us which MindBody tools she used to recover.

In addition, Neil talks about what it was/is like to walk with his daughter in the journey of switching from medically focused healing to targeting the brain. He says that Emilia was "trusting and a willing patient" and he sees that as one of the tools that helped her heal. "She trusted completely." In her words she learned to say "I'm brave. I'm strong. I'm okay."

In this episode I talk about thought patterns, mood indicators and examples of a growth AND a fixed mindset. One leads to revising chronic pain and one keeps us victim to the current state of our brain.

A growth mindset is dependent on the science of neuroplasticity - the ability to change, grow & learn. Any time we do those 3 things, our brain changes shape. This is called neural retraining.

The ability to re-organize the structure of your brain is the principle behind unlearning chronic pain. If your beliefs limit you to your current mindset , then you will be trapped by your past and you will remain victim to your struggles, challenges & even your neuroplastic pain.

But a growth mindset does the exact opposite. It allows for neuroplasticity which allows us to unlearn our pain. The bible is full of invitations to grow & change & learn because He empowers us to be freed, shaped & changed. He tells us to be overcomers and courageous. In this episode I review Dr. John Sarno's 12 Daily reminders for those with TMS/ Mind Body Syndrome.

As usual, I add my own take on the power of God to redeem our emotions and therefore our pain.

1.The pain is due to TMS, not to a structural abnormality.

2.The direct reason for the pain is mild oxygen deprivation.

3.TMS is a harmless condition caused by my repressed emotions.

4.The principal emotion is my repressed ANGER. 5.TMS exists only to distract my attentions from the emotions

6.Since my back (replace with whatever pain you’ve got) is basically normal there is nothing to fear.

7.Therefore, physical activity is not dangerous

8.And I MUST resume all normal physical activity

9.I will not be concerned or intimidated by the pain

This is not going to be your typical list of 1. breathe 2. relax your muscles, 3. yoga, 4. cold water type of list to calm your nervous system.

This is a more comprehensive, big picture goals of creating lasting, real change in your brain & body to bring about peace that passes understanding.

Teaching your nervous system that you are safe is not an easy job because your brain is wired (from life experiences) to bypass the reasoning part of our brain. Therefore, recovering from chronic symptoms is a journey. It's important to be patient with yourself.

The journey includes small changes and big changes.

As a Christian, it can be confusing to hear all of the evolutionary explanations of why our bodies are dysregulted or how to reverse chronic pain through using the vagus nerve, meditation, breathing, etc.

I have had quite a few emails asking me to unpack my beliefs on this. So here it is. In this video, I keep it simple. I believe God created us with a Vagus nerve, Emotions, AND the ability to think Logically. They are all a gift from God and IT is good to use them as tools to heal.

Understanding WHY the vagus nerve is helpful to be a great tool in healing. I used cold water, deep breathing, humming, singing and more in my own healing process. It is important that you honor your own conscience with these tools.

I also talk about the ACE's study and how Adverse Childhood Experiences can be what causes dysregulation, hypervigilance and chronic pain in the first place.

I discuss the term “Trauma” and how it can often be mistaken as a diagnosis that is unhealable. This is not true, nor biblical!

Georgie Oldfield MCSP is a leading physiotherapist and chronic pain specialist, promoting a pioneering approach to resolving chronic pain through her online SIRPA Recovery Programme. Georgie is the founder of SIRPATM, an organisation dedicated to promoting the concept that chronic pain is part of an unconscious protective response caused by learned nerve pathways, rather than any physical ‘abnormality’ found, hence full recovery is possible. 

As well as her clinical work, Georgie gives talks and writes widely about the concept, publishing a book, ‘Chronic Pain: Your Key to Recovery’ in 2014 and giving a TEDx talk in Manchester, UK in 2019. In 2010, through SIRPATM, she developed the first training programme worldwide enabling health professionals and coaches to learn how to integrate this approach and the concept on which it is based within their own work. Georgie has also organised and hosted three conferences in this field which were held at the home of the Royal Society of Medicine in London in 2015, 2017 & 2022

Thoughts can be incredibly controlling, but they don't have to be. 

In the same way that we can learn to respond in a helpful way to our symptoms we can also respond to our thoughts in a way that disempowers them.

3. Don't itch it.

4. Name it.

In this episode I was able to interview Tamara Gurin & Rita LaBarbera who have both recovered from CRPS through doing emotional work and targeting the brain.

CRPS is different than many other manifestations of TMS because it has visible representation in the body and yet it is still caused and curable by the brain.

We also discuss Dystonia and other forms of Mind Body Syndrome. There is so much hope! We talk about the role of doubt, confusion, whether a diagnosis is helpful or not, and whether additional therapies are helpful to recovery.
