Ep.197 - James Bond 007 (Nintendo Game Boy)03 Oct 202400:24:39

The game's Bond... James Bond! Chris and Ashley get their licence to podcast this week in James Bond 007 on the Game Boy, an action RPG that tries to distil the thrills, spills and kills of N64 titan GoldenEye onto a small pixelated black and white screen. Find out how successful developer Saffire were in achieving this by listening!

Ep.196 - Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Sony PlayStation 2)19 Sep 202400:51:48

It's time for us to tinker with time as we play Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a 2003 action-adventure-platformer hybrid. It's a game both Chris and Ashley have very good memories of playing and have high hopes that it stands the test of time. Along the way, you'll find out how this game links to the Assassin's Creed series and Beyond Good and Evil, hear Ashley's awful eBay story and learn about Aristotelian unities. What a ride!

Note: this was recorded way back in time (August 2023) when this year's brilliant POP game, The Lost Crown, hadn't even been announced, hence no mention of it. Nor had the currently-upcoming Rogue Prince of Persia. There's probably a clever analogy about time here but we'll let you fill in the blanks with that.

Ep.107 - Monster Rancher Advance 2 (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)05 May 202200:56:11

This week, Chris and Ashley are transported to a far away land where Monsters rule! That's right, Chris and Ashley have mostly been trading in their tablets for a host of strange creatures in Monster Rancher Advance 2, a game that sees players coralling and cajoling their ranch buddies into becoming the best of the best.

To celebrate this week's release of The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe (4/27, the same number as is on Stanley's cubicle in the game, fact fans), we are revisiting the original version from 2013. The game is unlike anything else we've played - listen in to find out what makes it so remarkable!

Ep.105 - The Sims (PC)21 Apr 202201:13:59

After Chris' Rosebud drop last week, Ashley had a hankering for some of the original The Sims - so here it is! We delve deep into the myriad expansion packs available, discuss how the game strives to reflect some distorted version of real life and reflect on why the game's overreliance on Comic Sans may induce some font snobbery.

Ep.104 - Max Payne (PC)14 Apr 202200:57:39

We take it back to 2001 this week to celebrate the news that Rockstar and Remedy are remastering Max Payne, this game where you solve a bad murder by shooting up loads of baddies. It's most famous for its use of bullet time and cracking script, but does it still play well? Listen in to find out!

Ep.103 - Immortals: Fenyx Rising (PC)07 Apr 202200:44:38

One appropriately from the This Game Where vaults this week with Immortals: Fenyx Rising, a game that sees you take on the might of Greek myth to help out the pantheon of Olympos against a less than savoury big bad who has crawled out of the bowels of the earth. It's a real treat for anyone who likes to explore, but especially if any of the classic mythologies has ever captured your imagination. Find out exactly what this game has going for it by listening in!

Ep.102 - Driver (Sony PlayStation)31 Mar 202200:47:22

Have you ever wanted to be the guy that gets everyone 'away' in a 'getaway'? It's definitely the main part, so you almost certainly have! This week, Chris tries to explain to Ashley why 'getting away' in Driver was a formative aspect of his childhood, and it involves another heartrending tale of lost friendship, so bring your tissues.

Ep.101 - Xenon 2: Megablast (Sega Master System)24 Mar 202200:35:23

Have you ever wanted to blast your way through a flurry of protozoic lifeforms with little to no narrative reason for doing so? That's exactly what Chris and Ashley have been doing this week with the help of the Bitmap Brothers and their game, Xenon 2 for the Sega Master System. A fast-paced, chaotic take on the shoot'em up, the game apparently has the player leaping across epochs to thwart the destructive plans of the Xenites who, at least in the Master System version of the game, aren't really mentioned outside of the manual. But none of this is to say that the game can't be good, but is it? Listen in and find out!

Chris and Ashley are island-hopping this week with Monkey Island 2, a bona fide classic and one of the most venerable entries of the early 90s adventure games set. Even if you've never played it, you have almost certainly heard of it, so join us and find out why it's still so worth playing after three decades!

Ep.98 - Elden Ring (PC)03 Mar 202200:56:33

Chris and Ashley have barely ever played any of the previous FromSoftware fare but, when the reviews started hitting throughout Thursday, Ashley started to get a little tingle he hadn't felt for quite some time and he plonked himself firmly on the bandwagon. Even then, though, he didn't anticipate that the game would impress him so thoroughly that he would absolutely have to talk to Chris about it. So, whether you are yet to set foot on the hills and dales of Limgrave, or you have already carved a bloody path across The Lands Between, press play to find out just how Elden Ring grabbed hold of Ashley so hard.

Ep.186 - Broken Sword (PC)14 Apr 202400:58:39

"Paris in the fall, the last months of the year, at the end of the millennium..." So begins the first Broken Sword game (AKA The Shadow of the Templars AKA Broken Sword 1), this game where George Stobbart avoids death in a bomb blast at a café in a trap set by a clown then decides to find out what on earth caused this to happen, triggering all manner of point and clicking around Paris, Ireland, Syria and other locations. It's held in very high regard by all, and both Ashley and Chris have great memories of the game, so give it a listen to find out whether it holds up! Ep.97 - DC Super Hero Girls (Nintendo Switch)24 Feb 202200:45:46

DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power on the Switch is a surprisingly good game; in this episode, Chris explains to Ashley just why that's the case. Along the way, though, there are debates about social media for children, the perils of consumerism and accidental sexism. Bet you weren't expecting that! Listen in to find out our thoughts on these - alongside discussions of the brawling, exploration and RPG elements of the game, of course.

Ep.96 - Kuru Kuru Kururin (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)17 Feb 202200:48:46

The Game Boy Advance was the console that just wouldn't stop, and Kuru Kuru Kururin was just one of the places it began when it released alongside the handheld in 2001. The game is a unique puzzley-mazey affair in which a pastel-coloured flock of bird cousins is kidnapped and the lone left-behind tasked with saving them. He ventures out in his helirin to navigate through a bunch of tight corridors in the hopes that his cousins will be at the other end. We're not saying it makes that much sense, but then it doesn't always have to, does it? Listen in to find out what makes this game such a high-flyer.

Ep.95 - Winter Olympics (Sega Mega Drive)10 Feb 202200:41:10

The latest iteration of the Winter Olympics is here, and what better reason to revisit the Mega Drive's snow-laden slice of sporting pageantry of the same name? Can Chris and Ashley take what is arguably their rightful place among the titans of mountainside sports? Or will the intrepid duo take a tumble? Listen along to find out!

Ep.94 - Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo Switch)03 Feb 202201:10:39

The final entry in our four-part face-off between a folically-gifted pipe artist and his erinaceous azure nemesis sees Chris and Ashley adventure across a variety of far-flung kingdoms in pursuit of the oft-kidnapped Princess Peach. We'll just say this up front: we both love Super Mario Odyssey, so it's maybe a little unfair to pit it against anything Sonic, but that's what's happening. True to form and his strangest compulsions, Chris follows up his pick of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with a game of the same name! This time round, we're grabbing the Game Gear to delve into the many zones of the portable entry. Sonic's second Mega Drive outing left our hosts reasonably happy, but can the blue blur pull it off a second time? Listen in and find out!

Ep.92 - Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)20 Jan 202201:02:42

The showdown is heating up with round two of Mario and Sonic Month here at This Game Where! This week, Ashley has brought with him another marvellous Mario entry for the Game Boy Advance. But this ain't your Grandad's Mario game. This is Superstar Saga, the first in the Mario & Luigi series of RPGs that made their name on Nintendo's handhelds over the last couple of decades. It's Mario, but maybe not as you know it! Listen in to find out why this is a Sonic smasher!

Ep.91 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Mega Drive)13 Jan 202201:14:00

The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones! Pepsi vs Coke! Sonic vs Mario! There have been many heated battles over the years and, this month, This Game Where are dipping a toe into the waters of Sonic and Mario again. First up, Chris is bringing Sonic 2 for the Sega Mega Drive, possibly his favourite game ever, jampacked with rings, running and Robotnik. But does it live up to its legacy? Ep.90 - Future Cop LAPD (Sony PlayStation)06 Jan 202200:36:42

The new year brings with it a game that's brand new to both Chris and Ashley, and our first listener suggestion! Future Cop LAPD is just like football (soccer for those that need it) in that it's a game of two very distinct halves and neither of your hosts is particularly good at it. The single player campaign is quite an easygoing run 'n' gun full of fun, while the second game mode sees players go head-to-head to try and tear down each other's respective bases. Sounds like a MOBA, right? Well that's because it is, and possibly one of the first in the genre! So how did your intrepid hosts get on with it all? Join us and find out!

2021 Xmas Special 4 - Office Christmas Party, Santa Edition23 Dec 202100:43:38

Our fourth festive folly arrives just in time for the big day, and it's a good job because it is all about the big man himself, Santa Claus! You might think Papa Crimbo's gaming appearances would be limited, but Chris and Ashley discuss nine of them here and there are so many more that it could've been another three hours long! So if you're lacking in the Christmas spirit, maybe find your comfiest pair of headphones, sit on the nearest Santa's lap, and give this episode a listen together!

Ep.185 - South Park (Nintendo 64)13 Apr 202400:45:26

In the heady days of 1998, with Y2K looming large on the horizon, Napster nary a whisper in the ears of two Seans (or Shawns, depending which one you ask) and Pokémon registering as but a distant rumble for anyone in the West, Matt Stone and Trey Parker were just about hitting their stride in putting the world to rights and making fart jokes with South Park. And then they went and made a game called South Park on the N64, and now we're here, in 2024, telling you if it's any good or not. What a journey! 2021 Xmas Special 3 - Wii Sports (Nintendo Wii)16 Dec 202101:01:16

We're straying into genuine cultural phenomenon territory for our third Christmas episode of 2021. Wii Sports and its console namesake came close to taking over the world in the late 2000s, with the former becoming the best selling game of all time, taking over all entertainment responsibilities at family gatherings across the globe for a solid few years. Nintendo captured new audiences and bridged generational gaps, and it was all in no small part because of Wii Sports. So come join us for a little trip back to 2006, find out what made the game so special, and whether it still manages to be something to write home about.

Ep.89 - Super Monaco GP (Sega Master System)25 Nov 202100:42:00

This week's game is a petrolhead's dream, or at least it might be - Chris and Ashley don't really know what one is, so it's really just a guess. But Super Monaco GP on the Sega Master System is a game about cars, and fast ones at that! Touted as a racing simulation game when it released in 1990, there's more than a little room for debate whether it hits the brief, and even more for whether it's worth anyone's time or not. You'll have to give it a listen to find out!

Ep.88 - Chicken Run (Sony PlayStation)18 Nov 202100:41:57

Chris completes a trilogy, of sorts, this week with his choice of Chicken Run on the Playstation. As he explains it, this is the third stealth-based experience on the PlayStation that he was playing alongside Metal Gear Solid, a game that has featured not once but twice on the show in the last month. Yes, it sounds odd to combine the two, but it does make an odd kind of sense, too, but you'll have to listen to find out exactly why!

Ep.87 - Titanic: Adventure Out of Time (PC)11 Nov 202101:03:51

An unexpected surprise this week in the form of Cyberflix's Titanic: Adventure Out of Time, a mid-90s point and click adventure that rode the wave of Titanic popularity to a level of success that even its creators hadn't anticipated. Listen in to find out what might possibly be the reason behind Chris's assertion that this may be the best game we've played on the show.

Ep.86 - Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions (Sony PlayStation)04 Nov 202100:45:28

Chris, as ever, is pushing the rules to breaking point this week and bringing what he calls a game but is actually a glorified tutorial for Metal Gear Solid, a title we discussed at length mere weeks ago. But who knows, maybe he can explain just why the VR Missions deserve almost an hour of your time, or maybe it will all crash and burn in catastrophic fashion. Listen in to find out!

Ep.85 - Splatterhouse 2 (Sega Mega Drive)28 Oct 202100:51:00

Almost not making it out because Ashley was too scared to edit it, this week's episode is a celebration of all things spooktacular as Chris and Ashley tackle Splatterhouse 2, an early Mega Drive hit that comes packed to the gills with buckets of blood (albeit green), a mass of blunt weapons, and monsters galore. Will it scratch your supernatural itch in the run up to Halloween? Listen in to find out!

Ep.84 - Minesweeper (Microsoft Windows)21 Oct 202100:44:27

With a brand new iteration of Microsoft's Windows operating system on the horizon, Chris and Ashley's minds drift back to the early days of the platform and the hidden gem that is Minesweeper that sat there, unassuming, somewhere in the depths of the Start Menu. Anybody who ever touched a PC in the two decades either side of the millenium has played it (probably) and now Chris and Ashley are playing it again. Ep.83 - Metroid II: The Return of Samus (Nintendo Game Boy)14 Oct 202101:01:16

Samus is back! At least she was in 1991 when Metroid II: The Return of Samus hit the Game Boy, and then again in 1998 when Ashley played it (and yes we know she's back again in Metroid Dread). This sequel to the hit NES is peculiar in a number of ways (that you'll have to listen to the episode to find out about, natch!) but we're certain it is worth anyone's time if they have even the slightest whiff of interest in games, so give us a listen to find out why!

Ep.184 - Tomb Raider 2 (Sony PlayStation)31 Mar 202400:39:07

To mark the recent release of Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 Remastered, Chris takes Ashley down into some deep dark tombs to do some raiding in Tomb Raider 2. Yes, the remastered collection came out two months ago now. Yes, we only did the first one last year. Yes, we hated it when we played it. What a pair of little scamps we are! The sequel was touted as being bigger and better than the first one in every sense so listen in to find out whether we finally get what all the fuss is about.

We've both been a bit under the weather this week so our episode today was recorded a little while ago. Long before the epiphany Chris experienced with Starcraft, in the midst of his denial of all things strategy, Ashley took up the impossible task of convincing him to play the latest entry in one of the finest turn-based strategy game series in existence, Civilization VI. Join Chris in finding out exactly what it is and why it is most definitely worth your time.

Ep.80 - StarCraft (PC)23 Sep 202100:56:17

If Ashley had a quid for every time Chris has slandered the real time strategy genre then he'd probably have a minor fortune. However, turns out it was all completely baseless because Chris has hardly even touched an RTS, let alone played one for any length of time. So what better place to start than with StarCraft? Does the game have what it takes to turn Chris around on an entire genre he has reviled for his entire life? Listen in to find out!

Ep.79 - Repton (Acorn Archimedes)16 Sep 202100:40:34

We're going way back this week with Chris's Acorn Archimedes pick of Repton, a game Ashley hadn't even heard of let alone played, but one that nevertheless spawned a multitude of sequels. Listen along to find out whether they were deserved!

During the episode, we played Repton at: BBC Micro Archive Repton 3 - Fan Remake

Well Chris is, and he says he gets it all from Apple Arcade! We have to admit, after talking about it for an hour, it seems there are rather a lot of compelling reasons to dive into this subscription-based games collection. Listen in to find out exactly why!

Ep.75 - Zool (Sega Mega Drive)19 Aug 202100:54:04

Are you the sort of person who watches bumper bundles of old adverts on YouTube for a sweet little hit of nostalgia? Then boy do we have the game for you! Zool is the first game Chris and Ashley have played that has included overt product placement! The game is a home grown 90s platformer that shares more than a little DNA with the blue blur, but does it live up to the standards of the hasty hedgehog himself? Listen in to find out!

Ep.74 - Mega Man Battle Network (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)12 Aug 202100:48:13

Turns out not everyone in the whole world has played a Mega Man game like Ashley thought, because Chris had never touched one before. In a way, he still hasn't because Mega Man Battle Network isn't your Nana's Mega Man. A fusion of several different genres, the title takes in elements of action, turn-based, and tactics RPGs, as well as a bit of puzzling and a dose of Pokemon-style collectomania! Sounds interesting, doesn't it! Listen in to find out more!

Ep.73 - Fantasy Zone (Sega Game Gear)05 Aug 202100:30:04

Fantasy Zone, released on the Game Gear in 1991, is a bright, bold and breezy shoot-em-up starring Opa Opa, a sentient space ship. Confusingly, it is a reworking of Fantasy Zone, released on the Master System in 1986, a bright, bold and breezy shoot-em-up starring Opa Opa, a sentient space ship. Does the Game Gear version bring something new to the table? Is the game worth a go? What is a cute-em-up? Give us a listen and find out!

Ep.183 - Project Zero 2 (Sony PlayStation 2)24 Mar 202400:53:37

We're back! After a month or so off, we're coming back this week with Project Zero 2, a survival horror game that gave Ashley the willies back in 2003 when he played it and some spooky goings-on happened during gameplay. Using a camera, your objective is to take photos of ghosts as you explore a mysterious village in order to bust them. Did it make us feel good? Listen in to find out!

Ep.72 - Agar.io (Browser-based)29 Jul 202100:49:11

Does your brain sometimes move at a million miles an hour even when you don't want it to? Do you sometimes find yourself in need of a moment? If the answer is yes, then Agar.io might just be the game for you. A semi-serene take on battle-royale style gameplay (and predating a number of the big names in that space, to boot!) Agar.io isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but it could be yours! Listen in to find out why!

Ep.71 - Normality (PC)22 Jul 202100:43:23

Normality, a 90s adventure game set against a dystopian quasi-United Kingdom on the brink of revolution created by the developers of the Premier Manager series. Sounds like Chris and Ashley's very precise cup of tea, that! But is it, though? Is it really? Give us a listen and find out!

Ep.70 - Clock Tower (Super Famicom)14 Jul 202100:52:45

To celebrate seventy episodes, Chris and Ashley play Clock Tower, a Japan-only survival horror game often talked about as one of the games that really got the ball rolling for the genre, and one that turns the tables on how the pair usually respond to horror-filled gaming. Listen in to find out why exactly Ashley loved this, and what turned Chris away.
