In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Dr. Katie Thompson, Programme Director for Elephants Alive, a conservation organisation doing deeply important work to protect elephants in the Greater Kruger region and to help reduce human–elephant conflict in ways that support both wildlife and local communities.
This is a thoughtful and hopeful conversation, but it also touches on the reality that conservation work can be complex and sometimes imperfect. Katie herself is vegan, deeply committed to animal protection, and brings so much care, intelligence, and compassion to this work. I’d really invite you to listen with curiosity and openness as we explore what it means to protect elephants, ecosystems, and the people living alongside them.
There are a lot of places, organisations, and resources mentioned in this episode, so do check the show notes and the blog post for all the details.

Introducing our remarkable guest and innkeeper, Gita Devi!

Gita's life has been a testament to her unwavering commitment to animal rescue and advocacy. For over 30 years, she has been a passionate advocate for the welfare of all living beings, making a positive impact on the world through her actions and choices.

Her journey into compassion began when she became a vegetarian in her mid-20s, and since then, she has embraced a fulfilling vegan lifestyle, driven by her deep love and respect for animals.

In her quest to make a tangible difference, Gita ventured into Farm Sanctuary in New York, answering the call to support their noble mission. Here, she found her true calling, working in the Education Department. Overseeing events, conducting farm tours, and lending a hand in the gift shop, she spread awareness and love for the animals she cared for deeply.

When life presented her with a crossroads, Gita seized the opportunity to pursue her dream of running a sanctuary of her own. She transformed her house into a beautiful and inviting B&B, nestled within a garden oasis she lovingly cultivated.

As a certified Yoga/Meditation instructor, Gita's connection to mindfulness and tranquility shines through in the serene atmosphere she creates at her B&B. Her guests find not only a place to rest their heads but a sanctuary where they can reconnect with nature and themselves.

Gita's journey has been one of resilience and unwavering passion. Her heart remains firmly dedicated to the animals she cares for deeply, and her dream of providing a safe haven for them continues to drive her.

In this podcast Gita will take us on a thrilling adventure through the wonders of the Finger Lakes. As we explore the enchanting Finger Lakes as a destination, Gita will be our expert guide, sharing her favorite vegan recommendations for dining, sightseeing, and immersing ourselves in the region's breathtaking natural beauty. From serene lakeside walks to awe-inspiring waterfalls, Gita will show us how to experience the Finger Lakes with an ethical and conscious approach to travel.

But that's not all; Gita is also the innkeeper of the delightful Ginger Cat B&B, where compassionate travelers find solace and comfort. During her stay, she'll reveal what it's like to experience the warm embrace of her vegan-friendly bed and breakfast, nestled amidst picturesque gardens and offering a sanctuary for mindful relaxation.

Let's open our hearts and minds to the beauty of ethical travel as we savor the flavors, sights, and experiences that this remarkable region has to offer. Get ready to be inspired and enchanted as we set forth on this compassionate exploration together!

REBROADCAST: Learning Languages for Travel | Wendy Werneth | Ep 12110 Jul 202300:58:37

Send us Fan Mail

We are excited to announce that we will be rebroadcasting an episode from our archives featuring Wendy Werneth, an extraordinary polyglot and former vegan travel blogger. During our Italy group tours, we encountered an unexpected shortage of interviews for our podcast while away. However, we found that this particular episode stood out as a good one to rebroadcast.

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Italy and France, where I was able to put into practice the languages I've been learning. It was a truly enjoyable experience to communicate, even if only to a small extent, in the local languages of these places.

Speaking a bit of the local language while traveling adds an extra layer of pleasure to the journey. It enables a deeper connection with the local culture and people, fostering more meaningful interactions. By making an effort to use the language, regardless of its proficiency, you demonstrate respect and appreciation for the local customs and traditions. It opens doors to new encounters, interesting conversations, and a richer understanding of the places you visit.

When you can communicate in the local language, it enhances your overall travel experience. You can navigate more easily, seek recommendations from locals, and uncover hidden gems that may be unknown to tourists. It instills a sense of independence and empowerment, knowing that you can handle day-to-day situations and interact with locals without relying solely on English or other languages.

Personally, my recent travels have left me highly motivated to improve my French and Italian language skills. Even the ability to communicate at a basic level reminded me of the joy and fulfillment that comes from connecting with others in their native language. This has inspired me to deepen my understanding of these languages so that I can engage more fluently and confidently with people I meet during future travels. I will have the opportunity to visit France in just a couple of months during our French Countryside trip, and I'll be returning to Italy next June.

Language learning is an ongoing journey, and my experiences in Italy and France have reignited my passion for achieving proficiency in French and Italian. I aim to expand my ability to express myself, comprehend the nuances of these languages, and immerse myself further in the cultures of these beautiful countries. My motivation to improve stems from a genuine love for languages and a desire to create more meaningful connections with people from diverse backgrounds.

While this episode may be a throwback for some, we firmly believe that it offers valuable insights and practical tips that remain relevant today. Whether you are revisiting it or listening for the first time, we are confident that you will find a wealth of inspiration and knowledge. Simply visit our website and enter "Wendy" in the search bar to find the original show notes for this episode, along with all the resources - there are a lot.

Join us as we rekindle the magic of this episode and delve into the world of learning languages for travel with Wendy Werneth, the Nomadic Vegan and polyglot. We will be back next week with original content for you.

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Peter Eastwood from The Tanglewood Foundation. Peter is a New Zealander who spends most of his time in South Africa. I met Peter in December last year because Peter is the partner of Adele who owns a Retreat in Africa. Retreat in Africa is our travel partner in South Africa who also are vegan (and Peter is too, in case you were wondering).  Peter and Adele were able to join us on our Garden Route South Africa trip so I got to know the two of them quite well over the course of the journey like all our travelers they were so incredibly wonderful and fun to travel with.

As I got to know Peter, the story of his life until then and his plans for the future, I knew that I wanted to share some of that with you and Peter kindly agreed to share some of his stories with us. Peter has had a love for Africa for a long time and has returned many times over the decades and has decided to focus all his energy on education and conservation which we discuss at length.

Five Best Places in South Africa to see The Big Five | Ingrid Geertsema | Ep 10520 Mar 202301:04:32

Send us Fan Mail

Click here for the show notes:

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Ingrid  Geertsema. Ingrid was Born in the Netherlands and she lived in the Hague until 2000. Her desire to travel was always strong and after high school, she struck a balance between exploring Europe and working in the Netherlands to pay for her travels.
In 1996 she decided to go back to school and studied Communication Management at the University of the Hague, where she also joined an exchange program with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (USA). Two months after earning her degree in 2000 the travel bug hit home once more, and Ingrid traveled to South Africa on holiday. This time, there was no returning home.
Ingrid worked as a tour guide for Baobab Reizen, a Dutch overland company, for three years. During this time, Ingrid traveled extensively throughout southern Africa. At the end of 2003, Ingrid finally settled down in the town of Hoedspruit, Limpopo, where she joined Transfrontiers Wildlife Walking Safaris. In 2009, Backroads Africa was born as an in-house travel agency, assisting people who had booked a walking safari with the rest of their itinerary.
Having worked in the safari and lodge industry for more than 20 years now, Ingrid understands the varying needs of independent travelers that come to Africa on holiday, to work, study, or sometimes fulfill a dream. Ingrid combines her love and passion for travel and Africa with a personalized approach and a 100% commitment to not just meet but exceed the expectations of her clients.
Ingrid is also a certified Life Coach and NLP Practitioner, a Vegan Nutrition Health Coach, and a Health Transformation Coach

As a Vegan Travel Specialist Ingrid assists local and international vegans with safe, ethical, affordable, and adventurous itineraries that include vegan guesthouses, lodges, and sanctuaries.

Ingrid and I had a wonderful conversation getting to know each other a little more and I loved hearing her perspectives on the best places to visit in South Africa to see the iconic African Animals.

So in this episode, we talk about:
How Ingrid’s love affair with Africa started
Her considerable experience in the travel industry in South Africa and the surrounding countries
The definition of the Big Five, game reserves vs National Parks
South Africa as a destination compared with other countries: cost, experience, medical issues
Different accommodation types

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Tammy Robertson. Tammy Robertson is a registered nurse who serves as a Food For Life Instructor for the greater Sarasota area in Florida. Her company is called Planted Into Wellness and she uses her medical experience to help guide people to improve their health through coaching. Tammy (alongside her husband Dave) was also a traveler on our inaugural Northern Italy trip in 2022 and she was great fun to travel with through the Italian lakes, dolomites, alps, and the Italian cities of Verona and Venice!

Probably the reason she is so much fun to travel with is the fact that Tammy is a former flight attendant, a job which I think you will agree is only suited to some people especially those with a sense of humor and Tammy has that in spades.

Today’s episode is a little bit different as Tammy will share with us her experience of working for an airline as a flight attendant Consider it more of a storytime episode.

In this episode we discuss the following:

  • How Tammy came to work as a flight attendant?
  • What the recruitment process was like?
  • What the schedule was like for Flight attendants?
  • Perks that flight attendants get when traveling
  • The challenges She’ll share some of her flight attendant secrets and hacks.

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Sofie and Tony who founded and run an elephant sanctuary, in fact, the first-ever Elephant Sanctuary in Europe. Seb and I met Tony and Sofie way back in 2018 when we went to visit The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France. We had been in contact with Tony asking if our group might visit the sanctuary for our Dordogne trip in 2020 and if we might visit during a scout.

They kindly agreed to show us around one beautiful spring day and what a lovely day it was. Now, I should add, that at this time, there were no elephants at the sanctuary yet. They spent a couple of hours showing us what they had built so far, their story, and their goal to try to be a place where elephants will live the rest of their lives in a much better situation than they were before.

As usual, Seb and I were in absolute awe of the work these people are doing. Of course that Dordogne trip in 2020 did not go ahead, but we have actually rebooted that trip and you could be visiting this sanctuary, a sanctuary that is not open to the public on our trip on our A Taste Of The French Countryside: Romantic Villages & Valleys with Colleen Patrick-Goudreau that is happening in September 2023! This trip still has a few spots available and you can join us and visit  The Elephant Haven European Elephant Sanctuary in France and meet Gandhi and Delhi!

In this episode, we discuss

  • How Sofie and Tony got involved in animal protection
  • Why there is a need for an elephant sanctuary in Europe
  • Why they decided to create this space for elephants
  • What their long-term goals are for this sanctuary

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Verena Erhart. A native of Austria, Verena has worked as a tour guide for years, leading group trips in Europe (bus tours for teenagers and river cruises for seniors) and local tours in NYC. Previous to starting her own tour business, she worked in international affairs and holds a degree in communications, anthropology, and development studies.

She loves animals (her dog Truffle in particular), loves to travel the world, cooks, and spends time in nature with her husband and dog. As a native of Austria, she speaks fluent German, as well as good Spanish, some Italian, and a little bit of French. She's lived in New York for 12 years and still finds new things to do. She is a Certified Vegan Life Coach through the Main Street Vegan Academy, a certified beer server (studying for Certified Cicerone), and she has a wine certification through WSET (level 2).

Now, some listeners to the podcast might remember Verena from episode 85 of First Ever VEGAN Korea Trip. Verena actually was one of the four vegan travel service providers invited to Korea, so I got to know Verena a little bit over that amazing week, although this time, Verena is going to be chatting with us about her adopted city New York City!

In this episode, we discuss

  • Things you can do as a vegan in NYC
  • Vegan-friendly Activities, and events for all seasons
  • Verena’s favorite vegan restaurants in New York City

2022 Vegan Travel Reflections and Vegan Travel Intentions for 2023 | The Joyful Vegan Trips Team | Ep 9326 Dec 202200:39:54

Send us Fan Mail

If you are a regular listener you are going to realize that this episode is a little different! First of all it is not edited at all and there isn’t even music or show notes for this episode. So why? I really wanted to create a little 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions episode and to release it just before the new year so that hopefully you will be inspired for your travel! I normally record my podcasts in advance especially when traveling, but I wanted to record this close to release because I knew that many of our reflections and favorites would be from my travel right at the end of the year and I wanted to make sure that they would be in the running but the tradeoff is that I cannot edit it as I normally would. At the time of recording this introduction, we have two of our 4 Africa trips. We said goodbye to our Botswana one folks and tomorrow we welcome our Garden Route travelers and after that, we’ll have one more Botswana trip before heading home. I

In this episode, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau and her husband David Goudreau are my guests and they will share their 2022 travel reflections and 2023 travel intentions.

I do want take this time to thank you, the listeners who have been listening in to this podcast in 2022! I am so grateful to every single one of you who has listened to an episode, subscribed or shared the podcast with people they know. I am so grateful to you! The World Vegan Travel team wish you an amazing 2023! Thank you!

An Incredible Sanctuary You Can Visit in The Black Forest: The Alternative Bear and Wolf Park | Sabina Reimann | Ep 9112 Dec 202200:44:41

Send us Fan Mail

Click here for the show notes:

In today’s episode, we’ll be talking to Sabrina Reimann who is a project leader from the Black Forest in Germany’s Alternative Wolf and Bear Park. I first met Sabrina a few years ago, when we took our first-ever group tours of vegans on a  trip to Paris and Alsace.  Seb discovered this place when he was doing the research for this trip. He reached out to some vegans just across the border in Alsace, and they mentioned that this place might be a good place to bring a group.

So, as I say in the podcast, it is a little bit confusing when you drive by this place as to whether this park is a zoo or a sanctuary, and Seb was also a little confused too, but on his scout, as we always do, Seb visited and chatted with staff, and it became quickly evident that this incredible place was doing so much to help bears, wolves, and lynx that have been placed in terrible situations - of course, we talk about this issue in depth in the interview.

I will never forget how excited Seb was to tell me about this incredible place and how excited he was to take groups here, in this remote area of The Black Forest that honestly would be a bit of a trek to come by yourself.

We really hope that you will check out and support the work that Sabrina and her colleagues are doing to help educate the public about the issues facing these animals when in captivity and also to help improve the relationship between bears, lynx, and especially wolves as the numbers of these animals in the wild slowly increase.

Consider also a trip to The Black Forest, whether with us on our Alsace trips or by yourselves. There are some amazing hiking trails, cute German towns and villages, ruined castles, and so on. We have been lucky enough to visit the Black Forest a few times, including when we hiked 7 or so days of The Westweg, a long-distance trail between Pforzheim and Basel a few years ago that is 288 km long in total (you stay in small hotels and little villages between each leg).

If you are stuck for an idea of a place to go, then I can’t imagine a better 10 days or so exploring The Black Forest.

In this episode, we discuss

  • How the Bear and Wolf parks started.
  • Why such sanctuaries are needed in Europe?
  • Where the Bear and Wolf Parks are located
  • The story behind one of the residents of the sanctuary
  • The issues facing bears and wolves in the wild
  • What you can expect when you go
  • What the challenges are for the organization
  • Their short and medium terms goals
  • How you can support the bear and wolf park
