My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Tefilah (Prayer) and related topics, such as Tehilim (Psalms) and Berachos (Blessings)! The shiurim I upload here are given in a variety of formats with different lengths and intended for different audiences. The common theme which unites all of these shiurim is our focus on strengthening our relationship with Hashem through Avodah she'ba'Lev (Service of the Heart). Tehilim 97: Hashem Malach Tageil ha'Aretz (Part 1: Translation, Questions, and Opening Moves)

Length: 1 hour 6 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (11/12/25), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we began the next perek in (what we're unofficially calling) the "Kabbalat Shabbat series." I don't know about you, but whenever I've read this one in the past, it's kinda felt more or less like a repetition of the previous one. Well, NOT ANYMORE! Even our initial analysis opened my eyes to patterns and themes I had never seen in the perek. It seems like this one is VERY tightly connected to the previous one, so our analysis ended up being built on what we learned over the past three weeks. Next time (בג"ה), we'll aim to discover the core!

Tehilim 96: Shiru la'Shem Shir Chadash (Part 2: Our Approach)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Length: 1 hour 3 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (11/5/25), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we had something of a “do-over” of last week’s session, which didn’t record because of a hardware failure. Thankfully, this version turned out far better! We managed to explain the entire perek and address all four of our major Tehilim methodology questions. Although we won’t get to go through the perek with one of the meforshim this time (since I’d like to move on next week), I’m glad things unfolded the way they did.

Amidah Analysis: Avos (Part 11) Melech, Ozer, u'Moshia, u'Magen. Baruch Atoh Hashem, Magein Avraham

Season 16 · Episode 24

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Length: 1 hour 30 minutes
Synopsis: This Friday morning (5/16/25), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we finished our analysis of the first berachah! Not that anyone can truly finish it, but we completed THIS round. After a quick review, we spent the bulk of the time analyzing the penultimate clause in the berachah, and rode that momentum through the conclusion. I'll probably do one more recording to summarize everything, but for now, we're done with the series!

The Sefer ha'Ikkarim on How Tefilah Works (Part 1)

Season 10 · Episode 2

jeudi 9 février 2023Duration 01:08:06

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

This evening (2/8/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I found myself in a bit of a quandary about how to proceed. On the one hand, we started a new topic last week and left off with a bunch of questions. On the other hand, I knew that some of our regulars wouldn't be here tonight. I decided to compromise by continuing with the same topic as last time BUT holding off on attempting to answer our questions until next time. Thankfully, I found two chapters in the Sefer ha'Ikkarim in which he explains how tefilah works. We learned through the first of those chapters tonight in which he takes up three topics: (1) Why daven to Hashem, of all beings? (2) What, exactly, is Hashem responding to in your tefilah? and (3) What is not proper to daven for?

What's the Deal with Shema Koleinu? (Part 1)

Season 10 · Episode 1

jeudi 2 février 2023Duration 59:19

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

This evening (2/1/23), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began a multi-part shiur which began with two questions submitted by my talmidim. We began by raising the questions, doing a quick but comprehensive review of what tefilah is and how it works, then using that review to answer SOME of the questions. We then delved into the text of Shema Koleinu, raising all the major and minor questions we could think of. Next time (בג"ה) we'll begin by attempting to answer the question, "What does it mean for Hashem to 'hear' 'accept' and 'answer' tefilah?" after which we will learn through Shema Koleinu to answer as many of our questions as we can.

Why Do We Say Avinu in Hashiveinu and S'lach Lanu?

Season 9 · Episode 16

jeudi 12 janvier 2023Duration 30:54

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Length: 30
Synopsis: This morning (1/12/22), in lieu of Mishlei, we set out to do a Q&A, but ended up discussing a tefilah-related question and learning tefilah commentaries to find the answer. For that reason, I'm treating this as a separate tefilah shiur. We didn't attempt to understand EVERY phrase in these two berachos, but we did come up with some nice ideas about the use of "Avinu" and "Malkeinu" in these two berachos.

Sheva Berachos Crash Course (Teves 5783 / December 2022)

Season 9 · Episode 15

jeudi 29 décembre 2022Duration 01:26:21

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

This evening (12/28/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, I shared a summary of the fruits of the learning I've done over the past couple of weeks with our newly minted chosson, Yehoshua, in preparation for his marriage to Brooke. We've been learning through some ideas in the sheva berachos and I figured it would be good to record those ideas in some form while they're fresh in my mind. For the sake of time and efficiency, I decided not to present the ideas from the firsthand sources, but instead to present our conclusions, along with the digest-style commentary of the Eitz Yosef in the Siddur Otzar ha'Tefilos. I'm calling it a "crash course" in that it doesn't aim for comprehensiveness - just for a bottom-line basic understanding. And at the end of the shiur, I do a quick overview of the various "issues" involved with the berachah of "ashar yatzar es ha'adam b'tzalmo" and explain our minhag.

The Meaning of "Atoh" in "Baruch Atoh Hashem" (Part 2)

Season 9 · Episode 14

jeudi 22 décembre 2022Duration 01:02:34

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

This evening (12/21/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began with a comprehensive review of all the ideas from the past shiurim in the series. We then spoke briefly about R' Chaim of Volozhin's model of mitoch she'lo lishmah ba lishmah as it pertains to tefilah. Then we continued our investigation of the question of why we switch back and forth in our berachos between 2nd person and 3rd person, learning the views of Rabbeinu Bachya and the Machzor Vitry. Next time (בג"ה) we'll wrap up that topic and then move on to the most important of them all: the shem Hashem.

The Meaning of "Atoh" in "Baruch Atoh Hashem" (Part 1)

Season 9 · Episode 13

jeudi 15 décembre 2022Duration 58:16

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

This evening (12/14/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began with a discussion about the difference between learning vs. tefilah. Next, we did a comprehensive review of all the ideas of Adonai Sfasai Tiftach and "Baruch" which we covered in the past couple of shiurim - some of which we developed beyond what we had previously said. We then learned through a tshuvah of the Rashba on why we switch back and forth in our berachos between 2nd person and 3rd person. In addition to clarifying the ideas he taught us, we spoke about how to implement these insights into our actual tefilah and use them to enhance our relationship with Hashem. We decided to only go over one idea of Atoh tonight in order to increase our chances of internalizing it. Next week (בג"ה) we'll learn another explanation or two from other Rishonim.

The Meaning of "Baruch" in "Baruch Atoh Hashem" (Part 2)

Season 9 · Episode 12

mercredi 7 décembre 2022Duration 59:54

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

This evening (12/7/22), in our Wednesday night Tefilah shiur, we began with a quick review of all the ideas of Adonai Sfasai Tiftach and "Baruch" which we covered in the past couple of shiurim. We then learned through the Sefer ha'Chinuch's explanation of the ideas behind "Baruch" and "Yisbarach," which - despite the Sefer ha'Chinuch's humble framing of his own findings - were amazing! Next time we'll move on to the word "Atoh" (בג"ה).
