When Tasks Feel PAINFUL with ADHD and How to Get Yourself to Do It Anyway26 Feb 202500:25:08

Ever notice how it feels almost painful to get yourself to do certain tasks?  Or loke there is a complete block to even starting even when you want to?

This is super common with ADHD and is what we will explore together in this episode.

When we feel blocked around a task and don’t find a way to do it, we often end up with unfavorable consequences like penalties and fees, people being mad at or disappointed in us, losing things, or even having more disorganized space all of which exacerbates our ADHD and can lead to shame (definitely not helpful!).

There are three questions to ask yourself and address to move beyond these blocks that I’ll share so that you can do the painful thing in a less painful way.

Be sure to listen!

In the episode I shared about my monthly 28-Day Challenge to Regulate Your Nervous System so you can focus and get it done with ADHD.  To learn more and sign up, follow this link:  https://jenbarnes.org/adhd-get-regulated-challenge/.  Note that if you are taken to a pop-up screen for a Priority Notification list, that means the registration for the upcoming month hasn’t opened yet.  Join this list to be among the first notified and have the first opportunity to claim one of the 25 spots with a coupon code to get it for 50% off.

How Putting Everyone Else First is Wrecking Your Business18 Dec 202400:22:04

How ADHD Women Lost Our Curiosity and How to Take It Back11 Dec 202400:28:06

Hi,

I’ve noticed a common pattern in ADHD women - especially those of us over 40 given how we grew up - that negatively impacts our businesses… it’s limited or a complete lack of curiosity.

I know this pattern well both personally and professionally, and have had to work to take back my curiosity to help my business.

In this episode, we’ll break down how we lost our curiosity, the problems it creates for our businesses, and my strategy for how to take it back.

If you to, have lost your curiosity - your ability to question - you’ll (hopefully) walk away feeling validated and supported and have a way to re-ignite your curiosity to help your business and your life.

Be sure to listen!

The ADHD Masking Trifecta: How to Function When It Stops Working04 Dec 202400:42:08

In this episode, we dig into the ADHD Masking Trifecta - Overfunctioning, People Pleasing, and Perfectionism - that many of us high-functioning ADHD women adopted (often subconsciously as kids) to be able to function with ADHD.  We’ll explore signs that it is no longer working and what to do instead.

This is essential - especially for ADHD Women Entrepreneurs - both because we need to show up authentically in our business to attract our ideal clients and because masking in this way eventually creates problems with functioning instead of increasing our ability to function (not to mention being disconnected from who we really are).

By the end of this episode, you’ll be able to spot when the masking isn’t working and know what to do to function now.

If you’d like help doing this deeper work, I offer two options for this:

  1.  My high-touch program ASCEND: The ADHD Women Entrepreneur’s Mastery Program includes 12 1:1 coaching sessions with me to do this deeper work.  You can learn more about that here and if you still have questions you can reach out to get on a call with me to discuss if the program is a fit for you and if you are a fit for the program.
  2. One-to-one ADHD Success coaching sessions.  You can apply to meet to discuss 1:1 coaching here.

How to Cope with Grief and Loss27 Nov 202400:39:48

Experiencing grief and loss in our culture is often tough because no one really talks about it so few really know how to cope with it or even how to talk to the grieving.  ADHD adds a layer of challenge to this.

In this episode, we explore the unique ways ADHD impacts the grief process as well as how to cope with grief and loss.

Without this work, grief and loss builds up over the years and can come out in unexpected ways - both emotionally and physically.

You’ll walk away from this episode with compassion for your grief journey as well as clarity on how to grieve well to be able to start to string together more and more moments of joy after loss.

If you know someone who is grieving, please share this episode with them for support.

Here are some books I found helpful, thought please read at your own discretion as not all books helpful for me will be aligned or helpful for you:

“Understanding Your Grief” by Alan Wolfelt

“The Afterlife of Billy Fingers:  How My Bad-Boy Brother Proved to Me There’s Life After Death” by Annie Kagan

“You Cannot Die” by Ian Currie (a bit dry at first, considers life after death including reincarnation)

“Motherless Daughters: The Legacy of Loss” by Hope Edelman (while primarily written for childhood loss of a mother, this was still useful)

“It’s OK That You’re Not OK:  Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn’t Understand” by Megan Devine (recommended by my grief group leader and I eventually read it later in 2019)

How do we highly sensitive women navigate our big feelings after the election20 Nov 202400:36:21

Hi everyone,

The day following the election in the States, I connected with a lot of people - clients, friends, acquaintances and more - all of whom were women and some of whom are in the queer community.  I noticed that a lot of us were (maybe still are) rightfully feeling some big and heavy stuff.

To meet the moment, in this episode we talk about how we highly sensitive women navigate our big feelings after the election.

You may be wondering why someone whose focus is ADHD Women Entrepreneurs talking about this.  I go more into this more in the episode.

For now, I’ll say this:

Whether with your business or something happening in the world, high sensitivity and the big feelings that tend to accompany them are both a gift (what probably makes you so good at what you do) and also can create challenges for you and your business so it is crucial to learn how to work with them.

Additionally, much is uncertain in business, as is true right now following the election.  Being able to navigate uncertainty is an essential skill for entrepreneurs.

So in this episode we’ll explore the big feelings, holding space for them, as well as explore what to do to work with the feelings and the uncertainty.

To be fair, this is probably not my most organized episode.  I recorded this on November 7th so am still working through my own stuff with thoughts swirling through my head (I seriously started over four times - though some of that was because my cat Eva was destroying my background screen).

At any rate, my hope is that you feel supported by this episode with some clarity around what to do now AND that you’ll extend me a little grace.

While I didn’t announce it in the episode, one of the things I notice in ADHD Women entrepreneurs that keeps them playing small is invisible ADHD obstacles - things like fear, doubt, overwhelm, feeling not good enough (or too much), and the like.

If you’ve been struggling to really put yourself out there for your business, you may be experiencing some of these invisible ADHD obstacles.

AND, if this is you, you’re invited to attend one of my free weekly workshops in November to discover How to Overcome Invisible ADHD Obstacles.  Click here to register.

Lastly, in the episode I promised to share a link to Brene Brown’s interview of Dr. Heather Cox Richardson on Awakening Democracy.  It is a two-parter and I highly recommend listening to both, especially if you are having a hard time making sense of where we’re at right now.  Click here to listen.

Thanks for listening!  I’d love it if you would leave a review.

It turns out, there are at least six other ways to work with your brain wiring to get yourself to do stuff that don’t have the same negative effects as procrastination can.

Plus, there are three essential pieces of ADHD motivation to consider that are often overlooked.

By the end of this episode, you’ll know the four essential things you need to help you do things you actually need to do for your business and your life.

In this episode, I also share about one of the biggest motivational challenges many ADHD Women entrepreneurs face - invisible ADHD obstacles.

  • Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques: Mindfulness and grounding techniques can be powerful tools for managing stress and staying present. I'll share some of my favorite techniques.

  • Balancing News Exposure and Mental Health: It's important to stay informed, but excessive news consumption can be harmful to our mental health. I'll talk about how to balance news exposure with self-care.

How to Communicate Authentically with ADHD and Avoid Trouble19 Feb 202500:30:08

To mask or unmask? This is often a serious question that many ADHD Women face - even if only subconsciously.

It’s tricky because when we mask and communicate in neurotypical ways, we more easily avoid getting into “trouble” or rejected with a massive RSD hangover.

But then, we may come across as inauthentic and feel like no one gets us, making us feel alone and even rejected.

I won’t pretend ot have all of the answers here and yet will share ideas on how to navigate what feel like complex social interactions with neurotypical folks for this time in history.

Why Pushing and Hustling is Destructive for ADHD Women Entrepreneurs16 Oct 202400:33:01

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to the Self-Loved Woman Podcast. Today, I'm diving into a topic that's close to my heart and probably yours too: the impact of hustle culture on ADHD women entrepreneurs.

The Challenges of Hustle Culture

We've all felt the pressure to constantly be "on," to always be striving for more. But for ADHD women, this relentless pursuit of success can be especially challenging. We're already juggling so much, and the added stress of hustle culture can take a toll on our mental and physical health.

The Detriments of Chronic Stress

Chronic stress can have a significant impact on our productivity and overall well-being. It can lead to burnout, overwhelm, and even health issues. For those of us with ADHD, the effects can be even more pronounced.

The Importance of Taking Breaks

You might be thinking, "But I don't have time for breaks!" Trust me, I've been there too. But taking breaks is actually essential for maintaining our productivity and reducing stress. When we give our nervous systems a chance to rest and recharge, we can focus better and be more effective in the long run.

Types of Rest for Better Productivity

There are many different ways to find rest, and it's important to experiment to see what works best for you. Here are some types of rest to consider:

  • Physical rest: This includes getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and taking breaks throughout the day.
  • Mental rest: This involves activities that help you relax and clear your mind, such as meditation, mindfulness, or spending time in nature.

Why ADHD High Achievers Struggle in Business and What to Do About It02 Oct 202400:21:02

Welcome to the Self-Loved Woman Podcast! In today's episode, I'm diving deep into the unique struggles faced by ADHD women entrepreneurs. As someone who's navigated this path firsthand, I'll share personal stories and insights on over-functioning, high achievement, and how these coping mechanisms can both help and hinder our entrepreneurial journeys.

Over functioning and High Achievement: A Double-Edged Sword

For many of us, over-functioning and high achievement have been our go-to strategies for dealing with ADHD. They've helped us excel in school and other settings, but as entrepreneurs, they can lead to burnout and dysregulation. I'll explain why and how we can break free from these patterns.

My Personal ADHD Journey

I'll share my own experiences with ADHD, including the challenges I've faced as an entrepreneur. From feeling overwhelmed to struggling with focus, I'll be honest about the ups and downs of this journey.

The Challenges of Overfunctioning in Business

Over-functioning can sabotage our entrepreneurial efforts in various ways. I'll discuss how it can lead to:

  • Burnout: Constantly pushing ourselves to the limit can take a toll on our physical and mental health.
  • Dysregulation: Our nervous systems can become overwhelmed, leading to anxiety, stress, and other issues.
  • Imposter Syndrome: The constant need to prove ourselves can contribute to feelings of self-doubt.

The Importance of Regulating Your Nervous System

To navigate the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship, it's essential to regulate our nervous systems. I'll share practical tips for grounding, aligning with our highest purpose, and finding balance in our lives.

The Reality of Hard Work and Success

While hard work is undoubtedly important, it's not the only key to success. I'll discuss the role of self-compassion, resilience, and embracing our neurodivergence.

Navigating Feedback and Growth

As entrepreneurs, we'll inevitably face challenges and receive feedback. I'll share how to approach these situations with grace and use them as opportunities for growth.

I'll wrap up the episode with my final thoughts on the importance of self-love, acceptance, and community for ADHD women entrepreneurs. Remember, you're not alone, and there's strength in embracing your neurodivergence.

How to Improve Your Focus with ADHD: It's probably WHAT you Think, but Not How18 Sep 202400:38:39

Welcome to the Self Loved Woman Podcast!

Today, I'm diving deep into a topic that's near and dear to my heart: mindfulness for ADHD. As someone who's navigated the ups and downs of this type of neurodivergene, I've found that mindfulness has been a game-changer in helping me focus, reduce stress, and connect with myself on a deeper level.

Understanding ADHD and Focus:

Let's talk about ADHD. We all know the struggle – the racing thoughts, the difficulty staying on task, and the constant feeling of being overwhelmed. But did you know that mindfulness can be a powerful tool for managing these symptoms?

Debunking Mindfulness Myths:

One of the biggest misconceptions about mindfulness is that you need to sit perfectly still and empty your mind. That's simply not the case! Mindfulness is about being present in the moment, and that can happen in a variety of ways. Whether you're brushing your teeth, taking a walk, or doing yoga, you can incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine.

Mindfulness Techniques for ADHD:

In this episode, I'll share some specific mindfulness techniques that have worked wonders for me and other people with ADHD. We'll explore things like body scans, guided meditations, and mindful movement.

Scientific Evidence Supporting Mindfulness:

But don't just take my word for it! There's a growing body of scientific research that supports the benefits of mindfulness for people with ADHD. We'll discuss some of the latest studies and what they reveal about how mindfulness can improve focus, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall well-being.

Personal Experiences with Mindfulness:

I'll also share my own personal journey with mindfulness. From the challenges I faced to the incredible transformations I've experienced, I'll be honest and open about my experiences.

Movement-Based Mindfulness Practices:

For those of us who struggle to sit still, mindfulness doesn't have to mean sitting in meditation. We'll explore some movement-based mindfulness practices that can be incredibly effective for people with ADHD.

Developing a Seated Meditation Practice:

If you're interested in trying seated meditation, I'll provide some tips and strategies to help you get started. We'll talk about finding a comfortable posture, dealing with distractions, and cultivating patience.

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness Practices:

For those who have experienced trauma, it's important to approach mindfulness in a way that's safe and supportive. We'll discuss trauma-sensitive mindfulness practices and how to create a healing space.

Mindfulness is a valuable tool for anyone with ADHD. By incorporating mindfulness into your daily life, you can improve your focus, reduce stress, and cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness and connection.

I hope this episode has inspired you to explore mindfulness and see how it can benefit you. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to practice mindfulness. The most important thing is to find what works best for you and to be patient with yourself along the way.

3 Essential Practices to Stop Scary Times from Exacerbating Your ADHD12 Feb 202500:48:42

In work, I have been noticing a lot of people struggling with the major changes going on in our country and challenges in the world.  In this episode, we will acknowledge, validate, and work to understand how this is particularly hard for we ADHD women given our tendency to be highly sensitive, more easily overwhelmed by our emotions and external experiences, and our propensity towards social justice.

Further, we will explore three essential practices to do right now to effectively navigate the challenges surfacing based on world events.

Without this piece, as ADHDers, we may end up more chronically in our protective responses (fight/flight or shutdown), making it nearly impossible to focus and get stuff done with ADHD.

By the end of our time together, you will likely feel seen and validated in your experiences (if you’ve been struggling) and walk away with three essential practices to incorporate to help.

Be sure to listen!

Discipline isn't real and what you need to do instead.29 May 202400:24:45

Hey, it's Jen from the Self Loved Woman Podcast. I used to think I was disciplined, but I've realized it's about training habits, especially with ADHD. Each habit I've built, like my morning routine, came over time, not all at once. In today’s episode we look at how willpower is needed to start a habit, but it's also limited so we must focus on one habit at a time, making it interesting and removing barriers. Keep existing habits to avoid starting over. It takes about 66 days to build a habit. If you're struggling, start with one small step. Check out today’s episode for more tips.

If you’re like most ADHD women entrepreneurs then you’re likely jumping from task to task, not really sure where or even how to actually focus.

And each task you start just opens the door to more tasks you have to do so you keep shifting your attention. This is just what our ADHD brains do.

AND the good news is, there’s a solution.

I’ve developed my 5-Step Master Task Plan to optimize productive while honoring our ADHD brains. I’ve been using this myself for years and my clients love it!

Why So Many Entrepreneurs Are Talking About The Power Of Surrender22 May 202400:26:06

Hey, it's Jen. I'm so glad you're here today. I want to talk about a pattern I see in myself and others, especially in response to something I hear a lot in entrepreneurial circles: the idea of surrender and how hard that can be for us ADHDers even though it's essential.

Today, we'll dive into the concept of parts from an Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective, where we recognize that we all have parts with different roles. I'll share how masking through high achievement is a common pattern among ADHDers, and how forcing and pushing to succeed can work temporarily but often leads to burnout. We’ll discuss the importance of letting go, embracing uncertainty, and trusting the process, especially in entrepreneurship. It's about finding balance, staying grounded, and being true to ourselves to attract the right opportunities.

Stay tuned, and let’s dig in.

Think Your ADHD Brain is Broken? Here's What to Do13 Mar 202400:32:44

Welcome to the Self-Love Women Way podcast, I'm your host, Jen. In today's episode, we delved into the intricate ways our minds perceive ADHD and how societal expectations can weigh heavy on our self-perception. It's fascinating how we navigate through the subtle messages that tell us our brains are somehow broken and need fixing. Drawing from personal experiences, I shared moments where I found myself grappling with the need for rest while battling internal voices urging me to keep pushing forward, associating rest with inadequacy. This internal conflict, I realized, isn't unique to me but resonates deeply with many, especially women, in a society that glorifies productivity over self-care.

As we journeyed through the complexities of ADHD, I highlighted the importance of self-compassion and acceptance. While acceptance is crucial, I introduced the idea that true transformation comes from embracing self-love—cherishing ourselves despite the challenges ADHD presents. Through introspection and self-awareness, we can start unraveling the layers of shame and criticism, offering ourselves the kindness and understanding we readily extend to others. This episode encouraged listeners to explore their inner dialogue, question societal norms, and embark on the path toward self-love and acceptance.

Thank you for tuning in, and remember to share your thoughts and experiences with us. Your feedback and contributions enrich our community, fostering a supportive environment where women can embrace their uniqueness and thrive. Until next time, take care and continue nurturing the love within.

In this insightful conversation with Dr. Justice, we delved deep into the intricate connections between women's health, ADHD, hormones, and trauma. Dr. Justice shed light on the often overlooked intersectionality of these factors, emphasizing the impact of undiagnosed ADHD, criticism, and trauma on individuals, particularly women. From the challenges of masking ADHD symptoms to the trauma-induced hormonal imbalances, the discussion highlighted the complex journey many women navigate in understanding and managing their health.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Justice advocated for a holistic approach to treatment, rooted in understanding each individual's unique hormonal profile and neurotransmitter balance. Her approach emphasizes not only symptom management but also empowerment through education and self-advocacy.

Today on the show, Jen dives into the common habits of ADHD women, particularly entrepreneurs, focusing on the clutter of 'out of sight, out of mind' piles. Jen, the host, reflects on her own experiences, sharing anecdotes and insights into how these piles of tasks and books, while initially seeming like an organizational strategy, often lead to overwhelm and distractibility. Navigating Shame Sh*t Storms: How to Shift Out of Shame and Into Alignment14 Feb 202400:20:02

Hey, it's Jen! Today, let's delve into a topic that's been surfacing a lot lately: shame. In both my ASCEND program for ADHD women entrepreneurs and therapy sessions, shame has emerged as a significant theme demanding deeper exploration. While there's no quick fix for such a complex emotion, it's crucial to acknowledge it and shine a light on it.

Shame, as Brené Brown describes, thrives in secrecy, convincing us we're fundamentally flawed. Unlike guilt, which stems from actions, shame cuts to the core of our identity. It's heavy, leading to anxiety, depression, and disconnection from ourselves.

To unravel shame's grip, we must first acknowledge its presence and share our struggles with trusted individuals who demonstrate they are trustworthy through things like reliability, accountability, non-judgment, and generosity - essentially, key elements of psychological safety. Through self-compassion practices like journaling and inner reflection, we can dismantle shame's power, remembering it's a journey that often requires professional support, especially for those with complex trauma histories.

As we navigate shame's complexities, let's extend kindness and compassion to ourselves and others, knowing we're all worthy of love and belonging, regardless of the shadows we carry. Thanks for joining me, and until next time, take care. If you’re not already, be sure to follow and share! AND, follow me on social media!

Scattered Tears: How to Work with Grief and Other Big Feelings07 Feb 202400:41:45

Hi, it's Jen. Today, I'm exploring a topic often skirted in society: grief. Reflecting on my mom's passing almost five years ago brings this issue to light. Her recent 75th birthday would have been a reminder of her love, especially during my struggles with ADHD.

Lately, I've noticed many around me grappling with significant losses, making grief feel heavier. Emotions like disbelief, sadness, and bargaining are part of the messy grieving process. Active mourning, described by grief expert Alan Wolfelt, involves feeling and working through these emotions. As I navigate my own grief journey, I'm learning to embrace its complexities and find solace in shared experiences. Grief isn't something to rush through; it's a personal journey that requires acknowledgment and compassion, both for ourselves and others.
