When Tasks Feel PAINFUL with ADHD and How to Get Yourself to Do It Anyway

Episode 90

mercredi 26 février 2025Duration 25:08

Ever notice how it feels almost painful to get yourself to do certain tasks?  Or loke there is a complete block to even starting even when you want to?

This is super common with ADHD and is what we will explore together in this episode.

When we feel blocked around a task and don’t find a way to do it, we often end up with unfavorable consequences like penalties and fees, people being mad at or disappointed in us, losing things, or even having more disorganized space all of which exacerbates our ADHD and can lead to shame (definitely not helpful!).

There are three questions to ask yourself and address to move beyond these blocks that I’ll share so that you can do the painful thing in a less painful way.

Be sure to listen!

In the episode I shared about my monthly 28-Day Challenge to Regulate Your Nervous System so you can focus and get it done with ADHD.  To learn more and sign up, follow this link:  https://jenbarnes.org/adhd-get-regulated-challenge/.  Note that if you are taken to a pop-up screen for a Priority Notification list, that means the registration for the upcoming month hasn’t opened yet.  Join this list to be among the first notified and have the first opportunity to claim one of the 25 spots with a coupon code to get it for 50% off.

How Putting Everyone Else First is Wrecking Your Business

Episode 80

How ADHD Women Lost Our Curiosity and How to Take It Back

Episode 79

mercredi 11 décembre 2024Duration 28:06

Hi,

I’ve noticed a common pattern in ADHD women - especially those of us over 40 given how we grew up - that negatively impacts our businesses… it’s limited or a complete lack of curiosity.

I know this pattern well both personally and professionally, and have had to work to take back my curiosity to help my business.

In this episode, we’ll break down how we lost our curiosity, the problems it creates for our businesses, and my strategy for how to take it back.

If you to, have lost your curiosity - your ability to question - you’ll (hopefully) walk away feeling validated and supported and have a way to re-ignite your curiosity to help your business and your life.

Be sure to listen!

The ADHD Masking Trifecta: How to Function When It Stops Working

Episode 78

mercredi 4 décembre 2024Duration 42:08

In this episode, we dig into the ADHD Masking Trifecta - Overfunctioning, People Pleasing, and Perfectionism - that many of us high-functioning ADHD women adopted (often subconsciously as kids) to be able to function with ADHD.  We’ll explore signs that it is no longer working and what to do instead.

This is essential - especially for ADHD Women Entrepreneurs - both because we need to show up authentically in our business to attract our ideal clients and because masking in this way eventually creates problems with functioning instead of increasing our ability to function (not to mention being disconnected from who we really are).

By the end of this episode, you’ll be able to spot when the masking isn’t working and know what to do to function now.

If you’d like help doing this deeper work, I offer two options for this:

  1.  My high-touch program ASCEND: The ADHD Women Entrepreneur’s Mastery Program includes 12 1:1 coaching sessions with me to do this deeper work.  You can learn more about that here and if you still have questions you can reach out to get on a call with me to discuss if the program is a fit for you and if you are a fit for the program.
  2. One-to-one ADHD Success coaching sessions.  You can apply to meet to discuss 1:1 coaching here.

How to Cope with Grief and Loss

Episode 77

mercredi 27 novembre 2024Duration 39:48

Experiencing grief and loss in our culture is often tough because no one really talks about it so few really know how to cope with it or even how to talk to the grieving.  ADHD adds a layer of challenge to this.

In this episode, we explore the unique ways ADHD impacts the grief process as well as how to cope with grief and loss.

Without this work, grief and loss builds up over the years and can come out in unexpected ways - both emotionally and physically.

You’ll walk away from this episode with compassion for your grief journey as well as clarity on how to grieve well to be able to start to string together more and more moments of joy after loss.

If you know someone who is grieving, please share this episode with them for support.

Here are some books I found helpful, thought please read at your own discretion as not all books helpful for me will be aligned or helpful for you:

“Understanding Your Grief” by Alan Wolfelt

“The Afterlife of Billy Fingers:  How My Bad-Boy Brother Proved to Me There’s Life After Death” by Annie Kagan

“You Cannot Die” by Ian Currie (a bit dry at first, considers life after death including reincarnation)

“Motherless Daughters: The Legacy of Loss” by Hope Edelman (while primarily written for childhood loss of a mother, this was still useful)

“It’s OK That You’re Not OK:  Meeting Grief and Loss in a Culture That Doesn’t Understand” by Megan Devine (recommended by my grief group leader and I eventually read it later in 2019)

How do we highly sensitive women navigate our big feelings after the election

Episode 76

mercredi 20 novembre 2024Duration 36:21

Hi everyone,

The day following the election in the States, I connected with a lot of people - clients, friends, acquaintances and more - all of whom were women and some of whom are in the queer community.  I noticed that a lot of us were (maybe still are) rightfully feeling some big and heavy stuff.

To meet the moment, in this episode we talk about how we highly sensitive women navigate our big feelings after the election.

You may be wondering why someone whose focus is ADHD Women Entrepreneurs talking about this.  I go more into this more in the episode.

For now, I’ll say this:

Whether with your business or something happening in the world, high sensitivity and the big feelings that tend to accompany them are both a gift (what probably makes you so good at what you do) and also can create challenges for you and your business so it is crucial to learn how to work with them.

Additionally, much is uncertain in business, as is true right now following the election.  Being able to navigate uncertainty is an essential skill for entrepreneurs.

So in this episode we’ll explore the big feelings, holding space for them, as well as explore what to do to work with the feelings and the uncertainty.

To be fair, this is probably not my most organized episode.  I recorded this on November 7th so am still working through my own stuff with thoughts swirling through my head (I seriously started over four times - though some of that was because my cat Eva was destroying my background screen).

At any rate, my hope is that you feel supported by this episode with some clarity around what to do now AND that you’ll extend me a little grace.

While I didn’t announce it in the episode, one of the things I notice in ADHD Women entrepreneurs that keeps them playing small is invisible ADHD obstacles - things like fear, doubt, overwhelm, feeling not good enough (or too much), and the like.

If you’ve been struggling to really put yourself out there for your business, you may be experiencing some of these invisible ADHD obstacles.

AND, if this is you, you’re invited to attend one of my free weekly workshops in November to discover How to Overcome Invisible ADHD Obstacles.  Click here to register.

Lastly, in the episode I promised to share a link to Brene Brown’s interview of Dr. Heather Cox Richardson on Awakening Democracy.  It is a two-parter and I highly recommend listening to both, especially if you are having a hard time making sense of where we’re at right now.  Click here to listen.

Thanks for listening!  I’d love it if you would leave a review.

Why Procrastination Works but Makes Your ADHD Worse

Episode 75

mercredi 13 novembre 2024Duration 28:38

Hey everyone,

In this episode we explore why and how procrastination works to get yourself to do stuff with ADHD and how it actually makes your ADHD worse.

It turns out, there are at least six other ways to work with your brain wiring to get yourself to do stuff that don’t have the same negative effects as procrastination can.

Plus, there are three essential pieces of ADHD motivation to consider that are often overlooked.

By the end of this episode, you’ll know the four essential things you need to help you do things you actually need to do for your business and your life.

In this episode, I also share about one of the biggest motivational challenges many ADHD Women entrepreneurs face - invisible ADHD obstacles.

To help with that, you’re invited to attend one of my free weekly workshops in November to discover How to Overcome Invisible ADHD Obstacles.  Click here to register.
