Ep 83 Caroline Strawson | Narcissism, Trauma-Bonding & Neuro-Divergence | The Self Development Podcast19 Jun 202401:13:25
Summary

In this episode, self-development coach Johnny Lawrence interviews narcissism expert Caroline Strawson. They discuss the overuse and misinterpretation of the term 'narcissist' in society, the impact of narcissistic abuse as a form of domestic abuse, and the importance of understanding narcissism from a trauma-informed perspective. Caroline shares her personal journey of healing from narcissistic abuse and how she transitioned from being a podiatrist to a trauma-informed therapist and coach. They also explore the concept of post-traumatic growth and the complexities of narcissism, including the covert narcissist and the role of trauma in narcissistic behaviour. In this conversation, Caroline and Johnny discuss the dynamics of narcissistic relationships and the impact of narcissistic abuse. They explore the concept of mirror neurons and how people in relationships with narcissists often exhibit narcissistic traits themselves as a means of self-protection. They also discuss the concept of trauma bonding and the physiological addiction that can develop in toxic relationships. Caroline emphasises the importance of strategy and support in healing from narcissistic abuse. She highlights the need to honour and express emotions, such as anger and sadness, in a healthy way. They also touch on the differences between neurodivergence and narcissism.

Takeaways

  • The term 'narcissist' is often overused and misinterpreted in society, leading to the minimisation of the experiences of those who have suffered narcissistic abuse.
  • Narcissistic abuse is a form of domestic abuse and should be taken seriously.
  • Healing from narcissistic abuse requires understanding and addressing the trauma that underlies it.
  • Post-traumatic growth is possible after experiencing narcissistic abuse, leading to a thriving and flourishing life.
  • Narcissism is a complex issue, and there are different types of narcissists, including the covert narcissist.
  • It is important to focus on healing oneself rather than trying to change a narcissist, as they are unlikely to take ownership or responsibility for their behaviour. People in relationships with narcissists often exhibit narcissistic traits themselves as a means of self-protection.
  • Trauma bonding can develop in toxic relationships, leading to a physiological addiction to the cycle of love bombing and silent treatment.
  • Expressing and honouring emotions, such as anger and sadness, is crucial for healing from narcissistic abuse.
  • Understanding the differences between neurodivergence and narcissism is important to avoid misdiagnosis and provide appropriate support.
  • Hope is essential in the healing process, and finding the right community and support can make a significant difference.

Ep 73 Persia Lawson | Love is Coming | The Self Development Podcast25 Jul 202301:38:21

In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with renowned dating and relationship coach and three-time author Persia Lawson.

Growing up, Persia’s parents struggled with drug addiction.

To escape the challenging emotions, she focused on becoming an overachiever, and as part of her subconscious coping mechanism, she found herself leaning into an addiction to sex and love.

She became well-practised at sabotaging any chance of a happy relationship – either by cheating on the nice boyfriends or going out with dysfunctional ‘bad boys’.

Persia’s rock bottom moment came in her mid-twenties when she became the victim of sexual assault.

Following this incident, she put on two stone in weight which prompted her concerned dad to take her away to a health retreat in Thailand.

Whilst there, he gave Persia some advice that changed the entire trajectory of her life.

These words were the launch pad she needed to leverage all her overachiever energy towards healing the real root of all her romantic dilemmas.

Today Persia will be gracious enough to share her incredible story and offer the wisdom of what she has learned.

Now, Kirstie feels strongly about helping women to feel empowered through health and fitness as previously, she had always been obsessed with fad diets, cardio and the number on the scales.

She had yoyo dieted for years and never felt truly happy in her own skin, always looking for the “secret”.

During this transformational time, she’s turned her pain into power by competing in four bikini competitions in nine months, turning herself into a pro athlete in two federations.

Kirstie’s the author of "Build Habits for Women" and has recently been nominated for 'Most Motivational' Athlete of the Year at Pure Elite.

Highlights:

👉 Her experience with loss and grief

👉 How she got to rock bottom

Ep 58 Kris Lawrence | A Conversation With My Brother | The Self Development Podcast27 Dec 202201:27:57

Every year around this time, I feel drawn towards talking about sobriety and what's involved in being a non-drinker.

In past years I have spoken with well-known specialists such as Mandy Manners, Kate Bailey and Sober Dave, all of which provide deeper insight into becoming alcohol-free.

However, this year, and after many requests, I have decided to share a talk with my brother, Kris Lawrence, about our different perspectives on my sobriety.

The purpose of this conversation was to offer insight, companionship, support and the challenging emotions surrounding sobriety so that anyone considering experiencing a dry January could take some motivation.

On a personal level, this conversation offered me some incredible insight into some of my more significant life events.

I would be lying if I didn’t confess to feeling uncomfortably vulnerable about releasing this episode as I self-disclose a lot about some very personal moments of my life.

That is my hope for this episode is that my experience can offer a helpful perspective on your own experiences.

So please enjoy, relax and have a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Highlights:

👉 When did it start becoming a problem

👉 Why I believe I used alcohol as a coping mechanism for trauma

Ep 47 Josh Connolly | Suicide, Resilience & Emotional Freedom | The Self Development Podcast26 Jul 202201:17:38

Today, I’ll be chatting with the one and only Josh Connolly. For Josh, December 2012 was the beginning of him seriously planning his suicide. Fast forward to December 2019, and he’s delivering resilience workshops to global organisations. Back then, he believed that resilience was the ability to keep going no matter what, avoid any struggle, and show up.

That idea drove him to a place where he felt the best thing to do for his children was to take his own life. Today, I have the pleasure of saying he has a new idea of resilience. One that is fluid, which allows him to struggle and ask for help. One that allows him to keep his head up and shoulders back despite his internal struggles.

One that embraces vulnerability and keeps him reachable. One that helps him to understand what he feels, know what he needs as a result and be able to communicate that within his activities and relationships.

Rather than driving him to suicide, this idea of resilience has helped to deliver emotional resilience training to village primary schools and global brands alike. Josh doesn’t believe he’s a new person, he’s the same person, with the same emotions. The difference today lies within what he does with the energy of those emotions.

Highlights:

  • Josh’s experience with suicide
  • The evolution of belief systems
  • Resilence
  • Addiction
  • The difference between anger and rage
  • Forgiveness vs acceptance
  • The battle with ego
  • Emotional freedom

A six-year journey of travel, discovery, and research has allowed him to harness a broad range of supported knowledge to help others combat stress, mindset, and adversity.

He undertook a journey with his wife to travel from London – to Asia by land using only hitchhiking as their method of transport.

They crossed 26 borders by land and placed their trust in the kindness of humans.

They learnt invaluable lessons interacting with people from all walks of life whilst sitting in their cars.

Adam now lives full-time on a 59ft Narrowboat with his wife.

They enjoy the primitive and dynamic nature that living on the British waterways entails and the nomadic sense of exploring the UK.

  • The importance of mindset
  • Tools for improving mindset

In this episode of The Self Development Podcast, I’ll be chatting with that meditation guy, Jimmy Wightman.

Jimmy’s meditation journey started because his enjoyment of life was crippled by insomnia, and he’d heard that meditation could help with that.

He'd already tried mindfulness courses and guided meditation books and CDs, but nothing had brought him to the deep place of stillness and silence that he'd heard about.

Jimmy found what he was looking for in the ancient Vedic meditation tradition, and shortly after, he slept like a baby.

  • How meditation can improve sleep and increase energy
  • The science of meditation

But, over an 18+ year career as an entertainer, he's hypnotised over 20,000+ people around the world and has uncovered the real ‘in-the-field' magic behind our thoughts, emotions and mindset.

Louise is truly a remarkable human being that has been through some literally, unbelievable, experiences and has somehow found the resilience and self-belief to continue to fight.
