| Leadership for Personal Transformation | 17 Apr 2024 | 00:08:39 | |
Leadership is often discussed regarding its impact on organizations, teams, and the larger world. However, in this episode, I explore the dimension of leadership that I believe is the foundation for all other aspects: personal transformation through leadership. I share my insights into how stepping into leadership roles can be a catalyst for personal growth and can expand one’s own power and freedom in life. The stories and lessons I impart about my own experiences, especially as a father, provide a rich exploration into the transformative power of leadership, which I believe can resonate with many of you, whether you're new to leadership or have been a leader for years. “When you take on the mantle of leadership, a lot of your personal preferences, a lot of your personal idiosyncrasies have to be dropped for the mission at hand.” - Mark Silverman Today on The Rising Leader: · Leadership is not only about impacting others but also about personal transformation. · Embracing leadership roles can help individuals grow, become more powerful, and expand their freedom. · Fatherhood is highlighted as an entry into leadership that drives personal growth and responsibilities. · Through leadership, one tackles fears, bursts through limitations, and grows with every challenge. · Giving constructive criticism and setting boundaries can lead to significant personal development. · Leading up, across, and within teams shows leadership's multifaceted nature in promoting personal growth. · Being an 'imposter' is a natural part of the journey, indicating growth, stretching, and learning. · Vulnerability and speaking up are powerful steps for internal growth and confidence building, especially in a team setting.

This insightful concept has significantly impacted my personal and professional relationships and has made a noticeable difference in my enrollment and influencing skills. Diana Bonici, a brilliant angel on Earth, mentor, and relationship coach, taught me the power of time, place, and space in improving communication in my marriage. Even as a coach and communication expert, I've recognized the value of seeking external guidance to enhance my subjective conversations. As I reflect on the upcoming release of the Rising Leader handbook, I emphasize the significance of time, place, and space in various settings, including personal and business relationships. The concept of time, place, and space is a game-changer when navigating difficult conversations and aiming to influence change. It involves assessing the right timing, suitable location, and the mental readiness of all involved parties before engaging in critical discussions. It's essential to evaluate whether you are in the right mental space to communicate effectively and whether the other party is receptive to the conversation. This approach has transformed how I approach influencing and enrollment, personally and professionally. "Time, place, space, if you take the time, whether it's in your personal relationships, your business relationships, it's just a game changer in how your influencing skills and your enrollment skills will land." – Mark Silverman This week on Rising Leader: · Assess the timing, location, and mental readiness for important conversations in personal and professional settings. · Eliminate external distractions and create a conducive space for meaningful discussions. · Recognize and respect the preferred communication styles and processing pace of others. · Evaluate your own mental state and emotional investment before engaging in influential conversations. · Understand the impact of your message and ensure clarity and preparedness for effective communication. · Implement the time, place, and space concept to enhance influencing and enrollment skills in various relationships. · Embrace the use of external support and guidance to improve subjective and invested conversations. · Seek continual improvement in communication and influence to become a more effective leader.

| Skydiving In The Office - It Doesn't Have to Be Soul Crushing | 31 Jan 2024 | 00:09:27 | |
Do you feel stuck in a soul-crushing job? Maybe you work in a corporate office or are an entrepreneur trying to build a business, but you no longer have that drive and passion that once drove you to push forward. In the corporate world, there is a stigma that all corporate jobs are – or eventually become – soul-crushing.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
In this episode, I discuss the stigma often associated with working in the corporate world and explain why I don’t believe anything has to be considered soul-crushing. I discuss how shifting your perspective on your current situation enables you to feel more free and joyful and the importance of living in the moment to set yourself free of these negative feelings. I explain how speaking your truth, asking for what you want, and setting boundaries can help you feel alive and help you reconnect with your true self. I also explain the difference between those ‘soul-crushing’ feelings and having the desire to do something different as well as explain how you can begin to live in the moment and start ‘skydiving in the office.’

In today's episode, I reflect on my journey from being a sales guy to a successful coach. I share how I started with no resume and faced rejection from every company in Silicon Valley due to my lack of experience. However, I persevered and eventually landed a position at NetApp, one of the fastest-growing companies in Silicon Valley. From there, I worked for other renowned tech companies, building an impressive resume in tech sales. I draw parallels between my sales career and my coaching business, emphasizing the importance of time and hard work in building a credible reputation.
I also recount my early days as a waiter at the Four Seasons, where I initially felt terrified and out of my depth. However, with time and dedication, I became a trainer, helping new employees navigate the high-class environment. I encourage listeners to give themselves time to grow and learn, especially when transitioning to new roles or industries. By being patient, earnest, and believing in oneself, one can eventually become an expert in their field. I share my realization of the hard work I put in to reach where I am today and encourage those going through challenging times to keep pushing forward and building their success.

| Embracing Enoughness: Finding Wholeness Beyond Achievement | 13 Dec 2023 | 00:45:26 | |
In this week's episode, I had the privilege of diving deep into the topic of self-acceptance and overcoming the never-ending pursuit of achievement with the incredible Dr. Mandy Lehto. We explored the journey of an overachiever, the struggles of not feeling enough, and the transformative power of self-compassion. Dr. Lehto shared her personal experiences and insights, shedding light on the importance of pausing to self-regulate, accepting our perceived flaws, and finding joy outside of achievement. It was a profound conversation that reminded me of the power of embracing our humanity and finding wholeness beyond the confines of success. Dr. Mandy Leto is a renowned executive coach and global leadership development expert with over 15 years of experience working with senior executives at top organizations. She has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, and Psychology Today and hosts the highly-ranked Enough podcast. Dr. Mandy's journey from being an overachiever to finding self-acceptance and purpose has shaped her unique approach to leadership development. With her deep understanding of the challenges high achievers face, she brings a compassionate and transformative perspective to her work, helping individuals navigate the complexities of leadership and find fulfillment beyond external achievements. "The most challenging thing you may ever do is to accept parts of yourself that you feel are unacceptable and unlovable." - Dr. Mandy Leto This Week on Rising Leader: · Overachievers often struggle with feelings of not being enough, which can lead to a constant pursuit of achievement and validation. · The pursuit of achievement can be exhausting and ultimately unfulfilling, as the bar for success keeps rising and the dopamine hit from accomplishments diminishes over time. · Self-compassion is a powerful tool for transforming self-judgment into self-acceptance. It involves being curious about our feelings, acknowledging them, and finding ways to make ourselves feel better. · Accepting parts of ourselves that we feel are unacceptable and unlovable can be challenging but is a necessary step towards self-acceptance and growth. · Pausing to self-regulate when triggered is a superpower. Taking a moment to breathe, gather thoughts, and respond rather than react can lead to more effective and mindful actions. · It's important to use difficulties as opportunities for growth and learning. Instead of avoiding or resisting challenges, embracing them can lead to personal development and resilience. · Building emotional capacity is crucial for navigating self-judgment and criticism. Developing the ability to doubt our own thinking and be present with our emotions can lead to greater self-awareness and self-compassion. · The journey towards self-acceptance and enoughness is ongoing and requires patience, experimentation, and a willingness to embrace imperfection. It's about finding joy and fulfillment outside of achievement and recognizing the value of our authentic selves.

| Communication! Communication! Communication! | 14 Aug 2024 | 00:06:11 | |
In this episode, I dive into the importance of communication as the top skill you need to learn as you rise through an organization. Almost every conversation I have with my clients revolves around some form of communication—being more clear, direct, vulnerable, or authentic in your communications, or having to repeat certain messages to get the results, relationships, change, and connections you want. I recently spoke with Gene and Amanda Hammett about their book "Tough Conversations." Gene shared his magic question when coaching someone who's complaining about a situation and can't see their way through: "What conversation hasn't been had?" This question often leads to the realization that they need to give feedback, ask for something, or reiterate clarity through a conversation. "If I have a resentment, if I feel a resentment in my body, or if my mind's ruminating on a resentment, what conversation haven't I had? It usually means I haven't set a boundary or haven't asked for what I want." ~ Mark Silverman "The number one thing when you're going to be having difficult conversations is, you need to be grounded and present to be present when you're having conversations, because all of these tough conversations, all of these things are relationship building." Today on The Rising Leader: · Communication is crucial for getting the desired results, relationships, change, and connections. · If you want something, ask for it. If you're confused, have a clarity conversation. · Resentment often stems from not setting boundaries or asking for what you want. · Communicate your vivid vision of what your organization will look like in three to five years to align your team. · Being grounded and present is essential when having tough conversations, as they are relationship-building opportunities. · Many resources are available to improve communication skills, including books, videos, and dialogues. · Finding an author you like and watching their talks on YouTube can be a shortcut to learning new skills. · Effective communication is the foundation of leadership and organizational success. | Giving Your Way to Success | 22 Nov 2023 | 00:07:38 | |
Sometime around the 1920s or 1930s, Katherine Hepburn and her parents were lining up to go to the circus. In front of them was a family, and when the father didn’t have enough money to buy his family’s tickets, Katherine’s dad gave him $20. Because that $20 was the money they were going to use to buy their own tickets, Katherine and her parents had to go home—but, on the drive home, they were joyful. Making that family happy gave Katherine and her parents much more than they could get from the circus. This story—about giving and the joy that comes from it—inspires me to think about how a mindset of service and giving value has helped me become successful.
In today’s episode, I recount a story from Katherine Hepburn’s childhood and discuss the significance of approaching interactions with a mindset of service, generosity, and providing value. I also underscore the importance of setting healthy boundaries and ensuring your well-being.
“In your next meeting—the next time you walk into a room full of people—change your attitude and think about how you can give, be of service, and provide value. Watch it change your career.” - Mark J. Silverman

| Stop Overcomplicating Leadership | 08 Nov 2023 | 00:07:06 | |
I recently read a review of the Rising Leader Podcast and it made me chuckle. The review explained that, although the podcast’s interview episodes are great, the solo episodes tend to be repetitive. And that’s understandable—I do repeat some of the same themes like a broken record, but for good reason. I always talk about leadership, and one reason for this is that most people tend to overcomplicate it. While I believe leadership isn’t easy—it’s really, really hard, to be honest—it’s actually fairly simple.
In this episode, I discuss why leadership—although it’s hard—is simple. I discuss my recent interview with healthcare industry executive, Geffrey Roche, and explain how books and content on online platforms such as LinkedIn overcomplicate leadership. I also outline the components of great leadership and underscore why doing internal work—through staying grounded and reducing stress—is a critical part of being a leader.
“Don't overcomplicate leadership. Have the conversations you need to have. Be as honest as you can in those conversations. If you make a mistake, admit it—fix it, right? Make amends.” - Mark J. Silverman
This week on The Rising Leader Podcast:
● Why I never wanted to call myself a “leadership coach” ● How leadership becomes an intimidating job ● Solid relationships, honest conversations, listening, and other foundations of leadership ● Lowering your allostatic load, staying grounded, and doing the internal work as a leader

| How Well Do You Fail? | 25 Oct 2023 | 00:07:47 | |
You do your best pitching—but you lose a sale. You attempt to communicate your ideas well—but you get shot down in the boardroom. How do you react when you fail? Do you sulk, lick your wounds, or get resentful? Try to find excuses? Or do you acknowledge the feeling of disappointment and try to come back better? Handling disappointment and loss can be as challenging as the tasks that caused them, but our resiliency and capacity to bounce back from failures can be built.
In this episode, I discuss failing and failing gracefully. I share the story of Christopher Troy and explore how, when we’re met with failure, cheering for our team’s success can benefit us. I describe how I usually react to my own failures. I also share Beth Perlman’s wisdom on not taking failures personally and the value of treating life as an experiment.
“Everything is in the lab. Nothing is a failure. Everything is just an experiment. We're trying different things.” - Mark J. Silverman
This week on The Rising Leader Podcast:

| The Most Effective Tool You Forget to Use | 11 Oct 2023 | 00:10:54 | |
I didn’t think of The Rising Leader—it came to me: it picked me, and I answered the call. When I started pivoting to The Rising Leader, I was having so much fun. And though I was putting my heart and soul into writing the book, rebranding the podcast, and creating a keynote, it felt like everything was flowing—until it didn’t. It started to feel like I was pushing a rock up a hill. What came out of an inspiration became a hustle-and-grind. That’s when I realized that I'd fallen out of receivership.
In this episode, I discuss receivership, how you can access it to reach your full potential, and letting your intuition—instead of the lies of hustle-and-grind—guide you. I also share the story of how Dr. Hew Len used Ho’oponopono to help transform and heal patients at a mental hospital, discuss Dr. Jeff Spencer’s Full Potential Play concept, and suggest activities you can do to help you relax and return to a state of receivership.
“You can’t be at full potential until you add intuition or receivership, this exponential component, to your arsenal.” - Mark J. Silverman

| Lazy Leadership | 04 Oct 2023 | 00:08:41 | |
You’ve probably seen a video making rounds on the internet recently: a gentleman speaking to an economic forum sharing his rather controversial take on unemployment. The gentleman claims that today’s workers are arrogant and feel like they can get away with anything and their companies owe them; that we need to “put employees in their places” by doubling unemployment and having hard economic times. Autocratic leadership—thinking that you have to beat people into submission to squeeze productivity out of them—is not just antiquated, but lazy as well. Unfortunately, as wild and outdated as it sounds, it’s prevalent thinking.
In this episode, I discuss how leading with an iron fist is lazy leadership and reveal the common denominator between accomplished, effective leaders like Beth Perlman, Deloitte CIO Larry Quinlan, and NetApp President Tom Mendoza. I discuss the power of empathy and care as core leadership traits. I also highlight tailoring your leadership approach according to personality type and underscore building trust through genuine care for others.
“Amazing leaders who have accomplished so much have a common denominator: they run towards fire.” - Mark J. Silverman
This week on The Rising Leader Podcast:
● A controversial, outdated perspective on employment ● The willingness to tackle challenging tasks and help out your team ● Radical Candor and the need for empathy and effective feedback ● A client’s experience with feedback and empathy ● The only way to gain the trust of your people ● Tailoring your leadership approach according to different personality types

He illustrates how we can reframe spontaneous public speaking situations not as threats, but as opportunities for exploration and collaboration. He outlines the “Pace, Space, & Grace” approach to high-impact, high-intensity conversations. He shares a story of serendipity and why he makes it a point to say “yes” to opportunities whenever possible. Matt also outlines the three “Rs” people must consider before asserting their viewpoint and underscores how persuasion involves more than convincing another person to do what you want them to do.
“Most communication we do as leaders is spontaneous. We work hard on the presentations and meetings we run but, in reality, a lot of what we do in our everyday lives is spontaneous.” - Matt Abrahams

| Slowing Down to Speed Up | 20 Sep 2023 | 00:09:36 | |
“Am I working too hard?” is a question I get a lot from people—and one I received from the host of a podcast I recently got invited to. My answer to that question is another set of questions: when you’re “working hard,” where does it come from and how does it feel on your body? Depending on how you answer, you’re either working on something you love—and are probably there by choice—or working for the wrong reasons.
In this episode, I explore working too much and what you can do when you’re working hard for the wrong reasons. I also describe how I once worked hard, crashed, and burned because I was running away from fear. I also share the power of slowing down and letting your intuition guide you to your next steps toward a more meaningful path.
“Slow down, take care of yourself, allow your intuition to show up, and check where you’re coming from. You’ll get further; you’ll have sustainable energy and motivation; and life will be a little bit more fun.” - Mark J. Silverman
