Love and the Gay Man with Vinko Anthony
Episode 156
vendredi 14 juin 2024 • Duration 50:18
This episode features an insightful conversation between John and Vinko Anthony from Beau Brummell Introductions, a matchmaking agency for gay men. Vinko shares his journey of founding the agency with his husband, emphasising the importance of long-term, monogamous relationships in today's fast-paced dating world dominated by apps like Grindr. They discuss the significance of authenticity, vulnerability, and genuine connection in relationships, highlighting the role of personal engagement and understanding in successful matchmaking. Vinko's approach focuses on individualised attention, transparency, and commitment to helping clients find meaningful connections.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
-
Commitment and Transparency: Vinko highlights the importance of commitment and transparency in relationships, both in personal connections and in the matchmaking service provided by Beau Brummel Introductions.
-
Authenticity and Vulnerability: Allowing yourself to be authentic and vulnerable in relationships means genuine connections will form.
-
Mirror Imaging: The energy and engagement you put into a relationship are often reflected back to you.
-
Personal Growth: Personal growth and self-awareness are essential in preparing oneself for a successful and fulfilling relationship.
BEST MOMENTS
"I think authenticity is a word that's thrown around quite a lot, but it's actually being you and being comfortable, like you said, being you, getting someone to get to know you and who you really are and hoping that they like that."
"But I think you take the time out to actually really offer that service to people is actually what does this person really want? What do they really need? What's the what will be a good thing for them?"
"But you have to stay in that zone of commitment because, but generally people are engaging and financially contributing to this, it means that they're committed."
"And for that, you've got to love people, right? And so if you do and you work with people that you choose to give your time to those who compliment you and who you are as a person, then it's wonderful because we all have a story and we all have a book in us."
"I think without that, it's virtually impossible, but it is to achieve success for my clients. But also it's a tricky thing because of the time that and how much time I have, and I give to all the new clients and get to know them and understand them."

jeudi 14 juillet 2022 • Duration 14:35
In this episode John follows on from his podcast about signs to identify a toxic relationship with his tips on signs showing you may have experienced emotional abuse in the past. One of the reasons why we find ourselves in a toxic relationship cycle is due to emotional abuse experienced in our childhood, but how can we identify when this is the case?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- We can repress what we went through as a way of coping. By understanding and acknowledging how your experience can affect you know you are more able to move on and the following are markers that suggest you have been a victim of emotional abuse in the past.
- You are not good at making your own decisions.
- You are a people pleaser.
- You minimise toxic behaviour.
- You get angry or frustrated easily.
- You often feel defensive.
- You view yourself negatively.
- You find it hard to cope when people are upset or angry.
- You continue to inadvertently choose toxic partners.
- You constantly question if you are loved.
- You have difficulty accepting affection.
- You have nightmares about relationships.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Some examples of this may include humiliation, manipulation, verbal aggression, belittling and intimidation.’
‘This is often the case for people who are highly focused on the needs of others. People pleasing, for example.’
‘You could deny that it's actually that bad, that they don’t really mean it as you try to rationalise your past experiences to yourself.’
‘If you find yourself feeling particularly tense whenever people around you erupt, it may be because you used to deal with that a lot in the past.’
‘You were just never really made to feel that positivity either existed or lasted.’

- After a nervous breakdown after being diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and being informed it was untreatable, Ana embarked on a 17 year long struggle to heal through therapy. This began her expertise in healing and therapy after searching for different treatments.
- Ana became an energy healer, then a yoga therapist then onwards onto relationship theory, psychology, attachment theory and neurobiology. She now uses all of her experience in her relationship coaching practice.

’It was painful for me to watch them arrive into the office together in the same car and eventually he went on to marry her and have three kids.’ – Ana
‘And those kinds of triggers where you’re already disorganised attachment, so then having a relationship where you’re cheated on. How did that trigger your disorganised attachment, how did you react to that, do you think?’ - John
‘That’s why I call myself a ‘Transformational Relationship Coach’ because it's all there and powerful.’ – Ana
‘Most of us did not learn relationship skills either at home or at school. And that just makes it really hard for people to have healthy long lasting relationships.’ - Ana

Alchemy For The Soul With Eva Hunt
Episode 54
jeudi 30 juin 2022 • Duration 40:29
John talks to Eva Hunt, a consciousness coach and soul alchemist who helps people to connect with their soul, to love and thrive. For more than a decade she has combined her intuitive skills with the law of attraction principles, energy healing and spirituality to guide those in need.
John and Eva discuss how she became a spiritual coach, her father and his influence on her, living in Hungary as a child under Soviet occupation and her own journey to becoming the healer she is today.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Eva is from Hungary and by profession was a commercial economist. After moving to the UK and establishing her holistic healing practice in 2010 she has found her purpose in energy healing and spiritual coaching.
- Eva was very close to her father and believed they were soulmates. People generally associate the idea of soulmates to a romantic connection, but soulmates can occur with any positive connection available between people.
- Growing up in occupied Hungary had an extreme influence on Eva. Torn between the secrecy of her religious mother and her fathers desire to be a good citizen, Eva got used to a turmoil of emotions.
- Eva had her own spiritual healers and coaches who helped guide her towards the coaching career and showed her how much she had to offer as a healer.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Most of my clients are struggling with either their health, relationship or money issues. So relationship is a quite big chunk of my work.’ – Eva
‘You mentioned that when when we spoke previously your father had quite a big impact on you growing up.’ – John
‘There was a lot of different emotions. Fear and love and lack of things, but at the same time, the abundance of love.’ – Eva
‘I think that’s the hardest thing to see, to see our own limitations. That’s why its so important to have a mentor, a guide who is outside of our life and looks in.’ - Eva

Signs of a Toxic Relationship
Episode 53
jeudi 23 juin 2022 • Duration 22:06
When John works with his clients in coaching sessions one topic that often arises is the difficulty in finding and achieving an easy and healthy relationship. This is most likely because they are exhibiting habits that attract them to a particular pattern of behaviour that they are used to.
How do we realise that it is actually ourselves that are maintaining and seeking these toxic relationships and break the cycle?
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Often our choice of relationship is a subconscious choice that fulfils our needs based on our learnt patterns of behaviour.
- There are ten signs to look out for that denote that the relationship you have chosen is really not good for you.
- Is being around someone hard work or draining? Do you need to recover from time with them?
- Do you need to be careful around your partner to avoid upsetting or angering them?
- Do you feel exhausted and drained a lot of the time? Do you invest love and attention to your partner that is not returned?
- Try taking the relationship questionnaire listed under valuable resources below.
BEST MOMENTS
‘For example, that loving, caring relationships are not to be trusted because love is always removed from them at some point. If that’s your belief then you will seek out the evidence to make this true every single time and won’t know what to do with yourself if it doesn’t happen.’
‘Does being alone for the weekend put a smile on your face? Do you feel excited looking forward to the day that you’ll get away from your partner? If so then this is a huge red flag.’
‘If its reached the point that you have to constantly watch every move you make, you are in a toxic relationship. So, for example, you may feel nervous talking about something that may make your partner angry.’
‘If you try to take time for yourself to recharge and its not allowed, you can’t regain your energy.’

Create A Life You Don't Need A Vacation From
Episode 52
jeudi 16 juin 2022 • Duration 45:00
Alexandra Van Shaik is an international holistic life coaching expert in personal, business and brand development helping hundreds of clients kick start their lives and businesses in a different direction. Using a holistic approach to each client she utilises transformative techniques such as yoga, breath work and meditations as well as group travel experiences to transform and empower with positivity. Her brand work finds her helping you to tell your business story and create your vision using her skills in web design, graphic design and photography. John and Alexandra discuss coaching methodology, cultural, peer and family imprinting, breaking emotional habits, travel, morning routines and child rearing.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Alex has spent ten years guiding people to become yoga teachers which led her to her holistic coaching methodology.
- As individuals we need to decide for ourselves what our lives should work towards or entail without feeling we have to live up to our parents or peers' plan or expectations for our futures.
- Our childhood experiences form who we are and how we respond to the world around us as adults. Many of us become hyper vigilant peace makers in confrontational situations if we were brought up in high tension households and this was true in Alex’s case.
- Be aware of what nourishes you from within. What uplifts you? If you check the news every morning with its attached carefully curated world horror scenarios you are not going to have a positive day. Choose actions that empower you.
- As children we need to play. A high powered itinerary forced on a child with a thousand activities may enrich them but can also stress and leave them little time to actually be children
BEST MOMENTS
‘I just love to see people thriving in their life, in their businesses, just in general. There has been a thread throughout my whole life myself. Automatically myself I became drawn into this aspect of being a coach.’ – Alexandra
‘Or maybe you got into a job and after ten years you’re, like, ‘is this it?’ Am I really good and comfortable here or is there more?’ – Alexandra
‘We weren’t sure where we were going to be speaking today were we? I mean you’re in the Netherlands at the moment I believe? You could have been in Nepal but you’re off to the Caribbean.’ – John
‘I just love to get up in the morning and just do some reading, have some coffee. After that I do my Yoga practice and don’t do it the other way round! Never!’ – Alexandra
‘If a child is hyperactive, ya know, they have got all these terms for it right now. I think the root cause is because there is too much pressure on their shoulders.’ - Alexandra

Living an Untamed Life – Interview With Jim Hughes
Episode 51
jeudi 9 juin 2022 • Duration 49:59
In this episode John interviews Jim Hughes, the founder of Untamed, the company who serves their audience through a unique brand of coaching, speaking and events. They have helped entrepreneurs, business leaders and top performing professionals all around the world move ‘from the grind to aligned’. John and Jim discuss what Jim’s organisation Untamed actually achieves for its clients, how Jim himself found his way, childhood embedded triggers and habits and living a life serving others without losing yourself.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Untamed help people who are frustrated and burnt out, ‘in the grind’, uncover what’s causing their setbacks and allow them to become ‘aligned’.
- Jim found what he was truly good at and provided himself with an environment where he could flourish and express rather than feeling frustrated, stilted and suppressed. The same principle can work in personal relationships as well as professional life.
- The bulk of our personality is informed by our childhood and we are often installed with untrue or distorted beliefs about ourselves that need to be addressed and unlearned.
- If you are your best self you have more energy and ability to offer to help other people.
BEST MOMENTS
‘It’s a never ending journey, but the main bulk of it where the real low hanging fruit was picked, so to speak, was about an eighteen month process.’ – Jim
‘Nobody was there to say “maybe you’re just better at the bigger picture, the strategic. You’re better at starting things than you are at finishing things”’. – Jim
‘That’s what my documentary is about. My documentary is called “Forget Me Not – The Child You Left Behind” about those parts of us ourselves as children that we believe don’t fit into the environment that we grow up in.’ – John
‘Muting was a word that kept coming up. I felt like I was being muted, I feel like I’m not allowed to, I’m not being encouraged to thrive here.’ - Jim
