#165 – Think you’re flaky for quitting a hobby or dropping an interest? Think again06 May 202600:09:31

Because we’ve been taught that we need to pick a thing and stick to it, that consistency is next to goodliness, we've taken on the message that to get bored of an interest or hobby and drop it shows we’re flaky, faddish, and can’t commit.

Which means we feel shame for the stash of supplies gathering dust, we’re embarrassed about our excitement over a new interest that turned to boredom and we stop ourselves from trying new things, from following our curiosity in case it becomes yet more proof that we’re incapable of consistency.

In this episode I share my own shame struggles and argue the value of allowing ourselves to explore our curiosity and play, what there is to be gained and where it could lead.

#72 When you feel disappointed in yourself18 Nov 202000:09:15

When you feel disappointed in yourself

Why is it we can be so much harder on ourselves than we are on other people? We can give others leeway and second chances but if we don’t get perfection from ourselves at the first attempt we’re quick to self-criticise and berate ourselves for failing.

In this episode we look at:

  • A completely different way to think about our so-called failures
  • What we gain from falling down that helps us get back up

#71 You make more of an impact than you think11 Nov 202000:09:28

We may not realise it but how you are, what you say and do, has an impact that goes beyond those immediately around us. So not only do we affect others when we’re tired, overwhelmed or stressed, but also when we’re energised, relaxed and happy…

  • Research that shows just how far-reaching an affect we can have on other people
  • How that questions the idea that taking care of your own needs and desires is selfish
  • I share an example of how I saw the ripple effect for myself
  • What the ripple effect means for how we treat ourselves

#69 Can too much self-awareness be a bad thing?28 Oct 202000:09:07

#164 – Breaking the rules when you’ve been raised a rule-follower22 Apr 202600:12:06

As introverted, sensitive women who spent most of our lives oblivious to our neurodivergence, as did everyone around us, we find it SO hard to believe or feel that we have permission, that it’s okay, that we’re allowed to do, say, be, ask for, or take what we want or need.

After decades of taking on board the message that we need to live by others’ rules and expectations, that someone ‘better’ than us needs to signal their approval, we find it incredibly difficult to give ourselves permission.

To allow ourselves to state what we need or want, what we like or don’t like.

To show our enthusiasm and excitement.

To take time for solitude and rest.

To permit ourselves to move on from what no longer interests us.

To say no when we want or need.

To be ourselves.

The result of defaulting to others for approval and permission means a lack of trust in ourselves as well as a cocktail of exhaustion, resentment and overwhelm.

Learning that you can give yourself permission, that your own approval is the most important of all, is a tricky process but incredibly worthwhile. Because without it how can we hope to find the peace, ease and joy in our daily lives that we crave?

In this episode I share five ways I give myself permission to do things in ways that work for me, even if it means not following society’s rules…

#66 What if… it went right?07 Oct 202000:08:28

When we ‘what if’ we’re usually thinking about what if it went wrong, what if I messed up, what if I can’t do it, what if it’s awful… but there are two sides to what ifs and there’s power in allowing ourselves to imagine what if it went right.

In this episode we look at:

  • Our beliefs around what choices and power we think we have
  • The flipside of our standard what ifs
  • The magic in the possibility of our hopes and dreams

#163 – When you’ve masked your unrecognised ADHD all your life what does unmasking even look like?08 Apr 202600:07:11

Back when I was considering that perhaps ADHD could explain – well, me – I started a document called ‘Reverse engineering my life’ where I wrote all the different ways I did not display obvious ADHD traits.

With this list I was trying to prove to myself that ADHD couldn’t be the explanation for what I found difficult, for what I had been criticised for or made to feel was disappointing about myself, because the real explanation was that it was a failing on my part, I was just a bit crap.

Instead the document revealed the many, many coping mechanisms I had been using for decades which took vast amounts of energy and left me regularly exhausted and overwhelmed.

In this episode I’m sharing some of the ways that women, often sensitive, introverted, perfectionist people-pleasers, try to manage or hide their ADHD features for decades before realising their neurodivergence.

If what I share in this podcast resonates with you and you’re looking for support go to gabrielletreanor.com. And if you’d like to share this or any of my podcast episodes on social media or with your friends or family that would help more quiet ADHDers to know they’re not alone too.

#56 What do you believe?09 Oct 201900:10:21

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right” – do you believe that? What we believe is possible for us, what we think we’re capable of can see us making progress or keep us feeling stuck.

In this episode we look at:

  • The power our beliefs have over us

#162 How women manage or hide their ADHD for decades without knowing it25 Mar 202600:12:38

  • What’s behind people-pleasing
  • What it looks like
  • Why it doesn’t have to be pleasing everybody or nobody
