BONUS: A Conversation on Values18 Jun 202000:04:03

Before we start back with releasing new episodes, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk to you about values. Because values, in business, are important. I believe you should never question the values of the people you invite into your life and business–the people who you’ve chosen to learn from–as you navigate this bumpy road of entrepreneurship.

I want you to know that I believe Black Lives Matter. I want you to know that diversity and inclusion are values of mine both personally, and professionally. We have collectively had conversations (both online + offline) about race and racism, and these conversations are important and we must continue to create spaces where they can live. That is what I want to do on this show and on my platform.

The Power in Purpose podcast was created as a space to tell the stories of successful entrepreneurs who are doing big things in their businesses–big things guided by one principle: purpose. And we will continue to do just that and continue to bring diversity to the show.

Tune in to hear more of my heart and what I have learned and unlearned over the last few weeks.

046 | How to Get Things Done Using The Science of Habits26 May 202000:17:07

Today we’re talking about habits. And it’s such a timely topic because most of us have been stuck at home and stitch with our bad (and good!) habits. Not to mention, we are also approaching the half-way-mark of 2020, you’re 6 months into our goals.

Fun fac:  Did you know it’s been scientifically proven that it takes 66 days to form a new habit? 66 DAYS! No wonder all our new year's resolutions have an 80% FAILURE RATE.

This show is all about challenging the way you have been doing things (aka your habits), and pushing you to try new ways of doing things (aka creating new habits).

There is a lot we can unpack about habits, but I am going to share 2 things that are going to you this month - and in the long run.

On Today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast:

  • Why it is important to be all in for 66 days (yes 66 days!) to forming a new habit
  • The power of having grace on yourself as you establish new habits
  • How you can keep a sharp focus on a few things, instead of everything.

044 | Charging What You’re Worth Is A Big Lie12 May 202000:23:28

Charge what you're worth: Is that really a legit pricing strategy? Nope.

Did I get your attention? In our industry, all you ever hear is “charge what you’re worth.” The problem: selling products and services for less than what your Starbucks order is won’t get you anywhere.

While charging your worth used to work, it doesn’t anymore. Times have changed - especially for wedding pros and creative entrepreneurs.

Yes, you are worth something AND you are very worthy of making the kind of money YOU want to make. However, the pricing for your product or service doesn’t hinge on your worth. It hinges on what YOUR ideal customer is willing to pay and what YOU want to make as a profit. Let’s stop charging what we are worth - and instead, price ourselves for profit.

On Today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast:

  • Why charging what you are worth is not a legit pricing strategy.
  • What factors you should consider when determining pricing for your services.
  • The importance of pricing yourself for profit and what that looks like in your industry.

I first met Michelle 10 years ago at a conference - yes, the same conference I met Eliana, Heather Crabtree, AND Geomyra Pollard! Michelle’s been an educator in the wedding industry for over a decade - way before all of us. And she’s carved out a business for herself that helps you get down to the brass tacks of your numbers, without it being scary.

As I mentioned, Michelle wants you to have a curiosity about your numbers instead of being afraid of them. And she wants to empower you to build a stronger, smarter, and more profitable business so that you can have the life you want.

On Today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast:

  • Michelle shares her unique journey from wedding invitation designer to educator and financial guru - and how the journey has come full circle
  • How the education market has changed including one positive and one negative
  • Michelle has this philosophy.. The ABC’s of the 123’s and she shares this with us today and how we can be more financially smart
  • Why the numbers are the backbone of every business decision you make and how you can understand them better, to start making better decisions
  • Your money mindset might be holding you back, and if it is, Michelle’s mindset advice will help you get into a healthier frame of mind
  • Why pricing is just a marketing decision that you test financially
  • 2 Things you can do TODAY (yeah, today!) to start getting on the track of being more financially smart in your business
  • Michelle shares why purpose takes time and what it looks like as you enter your 30’s and 40’s

034 | Allison Sugahara on Why Brands That Cultivate Authentic Connections Are the Ones That Win11 Feb 202000:54:06

Allison of Polygon Market wants you to cultivate authentic connections with your audience through your brand experience. And in today's episode, she shares how we can cultivate authentic connections that will build our brand and our business.

As the owner of a brand marketing, business strategy, and visual design agency, she can hook you up with the visual representation of your brand. But what she wants you to focus more clearly on, is the connections your brand makes and the tribe it can build around it.

In such a hyper-connected world, your mission and how you approach authentic connection is what sets you apart from all the others. It can literally be how you rise up the ranks in a saturated market.

Allison embarked on the unconventional journey to create + cultivate Polygon Market long before it was established in 2014. After she and her husband, Derek, married in August 2017, they took the leap to become a full-time family partnership.

With several years of experience and infinite resources in brand marketing + business strategy + visual design, they have brought together a fierce community of talented professionals, providing brands with the power of an agency and supporting businesses of all sizes and from all over. Allison believes in the power of working together and building authentic connections to help everyone thrive in their own way.

In today’s episode, we talk about how you can be a brand that connects with people to build your own tribe or community. Allison shares powerful ways to make this happen, like core values and a brand manifesto.

  • Why building authentic connection is so important when it comes to branding, marketing, and business strategy
  • How you can be a brand that connects with people and build your own “tribe” or community
  • A brand manifesto can help you cultivate the community who is waiting for your message
  • How we can we tap into our values in order to understand our mission better
  • How do we know when our brand has reached the tipping point?
  • The brand that Allison says is doing it right by sharing their manifesto, their core values, and showing up for their audience to make authentic connections (it’s SUCH a good example!)
  • Allison has worked with big corporate clients like Disney, Netflix, and Anthropologie and shares a similarity between all three.
  • How purpose has made Allison happier - and she’s stopped the comparison game

030 | The Biggest Lessons I Learned in 2019 + What did and did NOT work in my business14 Jan 202000:29:22

I’m opening up on today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast, sharing the top 3 lessons I learned in my business last year.

I love these behind-the-scenes episodes and I’m excited to show you a little bit of the ‘inside’ of my business.

One of the greatest lessons I learned is that people are going to judge you -- do it anyway. So many of us sit in fear of judgment of others. It’s why we don’t get on social media, why we don’t put ourselves out there, and why we don’t take the next big step in our life and business.

It’s easy to get caught in this place -- a lot easier than it is to get out of this place. But in today’s episode, I want to give you permission to not care what people think. It’s time for you to live the life you’ve imagined and step into your purpose.

In the spirit of reflection, I want to encourage you to do this same exercise, uncovering the lessons you learned and what did and did not work for you this year. I created a simple workbook you can use to take inventory of your own business and life. This will help you figure out what changes you might need to make in order to go farther this year.

In today’s episode we talk about:

  • My top 3 lessons
  • The 3 things that didn’t work in my business last year
  • The 3things that did work in my business last year

If you’re interested in reflecting on your own life and business, download the workbook to get you started here: https://candicecoppola.com/lessons

029 | How I Made Batchworking Actually WORK... And How You Can, Too29 Oct 201900:24:17

I’ve had a unique relationship with batchworking. It’s been a relationship that’s spanned 10 years, and we’ve never really gotten it right. I’ve been trying to batch work since the very beginning of my first business. Block scheduling? Done it. Group tasks? Tried it. I failed over and over and over again and could never get myself to adopt this working technique or routine.

My friends raved about it. Gurus online swore by it. But me? I couldn’t get through a solid hour before I quit and opened up my inbox to answer an email that really didn’t need to be answered.

Maybe you’re like me, and you’ve tried batchworking before. What I’ve discovered is that we get really set in our habits. We develop work habits, and it can be so challenging to try and change them into more productive and healthy habits.

So if you’re like me, and you’ve tried “batchworking” a bunch of times and failed within the first 20 minutes, this episode is for you. Today, I’m revealing how I finally got batchworking to WORK for me, and how it can work best for you.

Grab your favorite pen and notebook! You’re going to want to take some notes on today's episode.

In today’s episode we talk about:

  • What batchworking really is
  • My 5 steps to help you succeed at batchworking
  • How batchworking will help you get more done
  • The power of momentum and rhythm

AND there is a free give-a-way! I’m giving TWO lucky listeners a free copy of Michael Hyatt’s new book, Free To Focus. Listen to the episode and then head over to my Instagram to enter!

028 | My Tried & True Strategies For Landing EVERY Sale22 Oct 201900:19:23

Do you have a defined sales process?

When we start out in business we wear MANY hats-- and there is one hat, in particular, you might not be aware of that you put on every day. Along with being in charge of everything from your website to payroll-- you’re also the lead salesperson for your business. In fact, the role of sales might be the most important role of all.

As we enter into Engagement Season-- which traditionally runs from November to April-- I want you to start developing your sales strategy NOW.  In order to be successful in business, you MUST be successful in sales. That’s why I’m sharing 5 sales strategies that work.

WHY DO YOU NEED A SALES STRATEGY?

Did you know that people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them? The same principle can be applied to strategies for your business -- sales strategies, marketing strategies, growth strategies-- they’re all the same in that when you develop these areas on paper, you’re much more likely to see them through to success.

On today’s episode of The Power in Purpose podcast, I walk you through:

  • Personalizing Your Pitch: Every person who inquires about your goods or services is unique. Are you personalizing your sales pitch to each individual?
  • Talking Like a Human: Learn why keeping it simple and talking like your customer helps you to land more sales.
  • Communicating Your Why: This whole show is based around the power behind your purpose, and when you can communicate why you do what you do, that has the ability to deeply resonate with your customers.
  • Understanding the Problems and Communicating How You’re the Solution: Paint a picture of what life would be like if this person booked your services. What’s the transformation?
  • Listening Without Intent to Respond: Far too often, we’re not really listening. Are you listening, or listening with the intent to respond?

And because this topic is so important, and because I want you to start booking MORE of your ideal customers, I’m hosting a masterclass on October 23rd where I’m teaching YOU my Ideal Client Blueprint.

Over the many years of being a business owner, I developed a way to understand who our ideal customers are. I call it my Ideal Customer Blueprint, and it’s helped not only us, but the dozens of businesses I’ve mentored over the years attract the right people.

025 | Caitlin Strempel: SEO in 2020 - How to Improve Your SEO by Improving Your Message01 Oct 201900:49:22

Caitlin’s purpose statement is one of my favorites that we’ve shared so far on The Power in Purpose. Sharing our gifts with the world is powerful, and discovering someone who wants to help us do that is transformative. On today’s episode of the podcast, Caitlin is showing us how to improve our SEO by improving our message.

SEO can be a headache. You either fall into one of two categories when it comes to SEO: your business is relatively new to the industry and you’re trying everything you can to rank, or you’re an OG business owner and you’re hanging on for dear life to your keywords.

We’ve all tried all the things like signing up for SEO webinars or watching endless Youtube tutorials. But on today’s episode, Caitlin offers simple advice on improving your SEO ranking and spoiler alert: it all boils down to your message. Google is smart. It wants to serve your website to the right people, and when we start focusing on our message, the magic begins to happen.

Caitlin Strempel is a business owner, SEO expert & digital strategist who works with ambitious and passionate business owners to get their services found online by the people who need and want their services the most.

Working with brands such as Under Armour, Lexus, and Olay, the work stemming from my strategies has been featured on Forbes, Advertising Age, Creativity, and Luxury Daily.

On Today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast:

  • Caitlin shares the story of how she uncovered her purpose, during a difficult time for her family, and in those lessons learned an important one: you can’t wait for your life to begin
  • Don’t wait until your life is falling apart to make a change
  • Shifting our mindsets to understand that we have a gift to give and that there are people out there who need our gifts
  • How your message helps to boost your SEO by attracting the right people who are searching Google for what you provide
  • Caitlin shares outdated SEO techniques and strategies that no longer work -- and gives what does work to increase your SEO ranking
  • Feel like SEO ranking takes forever? Caitlin offers suggestions on how we can rank faster along with a tutorial video on how you can find your perfect keyword
  • The importance of search intent and how google knows exactly what your customers are looking for
  • Have you ever heard of “search intent?” Caitlin breaks down this topic and how Google will show your website for similar keywords
  • Why you need to incorporate SEO into your overall digital/social media strategy
  • Think about your consumer and NOT Google when developing your wholistic SEO / digital strategy for your business
  • The amount of time people spend on your website plays a big role in your SEO. How are you keeping your website visitors on your website?
  • Does domain authority still hold the same weight as it used to?
  • SEO long process and investment, and Caitlin shares what we should be looking for in a company that we’re looking to hire for SEO

023 | 5 Things A Business Plan Will Reveal About Your Business10 Sep 201900:36:18

Owning a business is like looking into a mirror — it will mirror back ALLLLL the characteristics about you, both good and bad. On today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast, we’re talking about the 5 things a business plan will reveal about your business. Be sure to download your Free Business Plan Template, Outline & Guide.

I know what your thinking: writing a business plan is not high on your list of things to do. You're probably asking yourself, what's the point of writing a business plan? I know what I want for my business, and I'm working toward my dreams/goals/aspirations every single day.

It's true. You've gotten this far in your business WITHOUT a business plan. No one can take that away from you. But imagine, just for a second, what you could accomplish if you wrote down a strategy for your business?

Did you know that people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them? The same principle can be applied to strategies for your business — sales strategies, marketing strategies, growth strategies– they’re all the same in that when you develop these areas on paper, you’re much more likely to see them through to success.

What is a business plan? A business plan is an overarching strategy for the who, what, how, when and most importantly, the why. Which is why we’re all here and why YOU listen to this podcast. You take strategies you would have in business: your ideal clients, marketing, sales, competitive analysis… and you map out a plan for them.

It's really quite simple. And in today's episode, I'm sharing the 5 things a business plan will reveal about your business. I'm going to walk you through my philosophy about business plans, share the 5 strategies it will reveal, and give you tips on how to jumpstart the process.

022 | Megan Gillikin: If you were to die tomorrow, how do you want to be remembered?03 Sep 201901:06:43

Today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast is a special one: my guest, Megan Gillikin, shows us the power behind why we do what we do. Her business, A Southern Soiree, has evolved over the years and in 2016, she discovered that the company she loved and nurtured was ‘growing like a weed.’ Burnt out, unsure if she should continue and full of doubt, Megan got a phone call from a potential customer that changed everything.

In today’s episode, Megan shares the tipping point that forever changed her perspective on life and business. Today’s episode is a gift… and the gift is not just her story, but the story she shares of the customer who changed her life.

In 2010, Megan took over ownership of an existing wedding planning company in need of re-branding to remain relevant within the industry.  Over the last 9 years, Megan has grown A Southern Soiree into a multi-planner firm and established it as one of the most sought after, highly regarded event planning companies in NC.  A new passion of Megan’s started in 2018 was a podcast for industry vendors (Weddings For Real) that has highlighted a love that Megan has for providing real, insightful, and tangible advice and wisdom on growing and sustaining a successful event business.

On Today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast:

  • Megan shares her journey of becoming an entrepreneur and how a job interview turned into purchasing the business she was interviewing for!
  • We share the phases of business that lead to burnout
  • During a season in Megan’s business where she felt overwhelmed and unsure if she should continue, she got a call from a former client that rocked her… and ultimately changed her own life and path forward
  • How Megan learned to separate her own sense of self to the success of her business
  • In discovering her purpose, Megan uncovered that she was attracting the wrong clients -- ones that didn’t align with her purpose -- and the simple change she made to start attracting the right clients
  • Ask yourself: how do you want to be remembered? Megan and I talk about this concept and why it’s so important.
  • The importance of trust in the relationships with clients and how it’s the key ingredient
  • If you feel like you’re in the weeds and your business has grown in directions you were not prepared for, Megan and I have a conversation about pruning
  • We are all a constant work in progress and we need to let go of the preconceived notion that everyone else has it all together
  • Megan shares the lessons she learned in striking balance between motherhood and climbing the ladder of success
  • If you’re a parent or aspiring to be a parent, Megan shares some tangible tips on how to strike a balance that makes sense
  • Megan wants you to figure out what works for you rather than comparing how someone else parents, or runs their business
  • We live in a time where judgment reigns supreme, and Megan and I talk about the judgemental space of being a parent and how to overcome
  • Who inspires Megan and lives by their purpose
  • Don’t miss out on our hilarious conversation about The Bachelor and Tom Hanks (random!)

021 | Rhiannon Bosse: Why can’t you have the life you’ve always wanted…. now?20 Aug 201901:16:33

Rhiannon Bosse believes in the power of celebration. As founder and creative director of Rhiannon Bosse Celebrations, she has helped thousands around the world plan weddings and toast other milestones with a distinct blend of class and contagious joy, all of which prompted VOGUE and BRIDES Magazine to name her one of the top wedding planners in the world.

Known for her innovative design capabilities, Rhiannon’s work is unique and incredibly distinguishable. Her events, editorial work, and writing have been published in The Knot, BRIDES, Southern Weddings, Cottage Hill, and Bridal Guide, as well as featured on a number of their covers. In addition to being selected as a 2016 Grand Rapids Business Journal Forty Under 40 recipient, she has been published countless times on dozens of wedding and lifestyle blogs and has been on many respected speaking panels across the country. She’s an accomplished designer, teacher, leader, and entrepreneur.

In addition to serving discerning clientele all over the world, Rhiannon founded The Trouvaille Workshop, a four-day educational experience for multifaceted wedding planners. Over 100 women attended the workshop from 2014 to 2017, including business owners from across the United States, Canada, Brazil, and the U.K.

Rhiannon hails from Burlington, Ontario but lives in Rockford, Michigan in the cozy home she and her husband built in 2011. She loves Friday dates with her two boys, Lachlan and Ev, making a mess in her 900-square-foot home studio, and trying to find a reliable from-scratch cinnamon roll recipe. She dreams of the day she gets to dance with her sons at their weddings (which she’ll obviously help plan and design).

On today’s episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast:

  • Rhiannon talks about why she decided to incorporate florals into her wedding planning and design business and the year process she undertook to add floral designer to her resume
  • The tipping point that led Rhiannon to discover her multifaceted purpose, and how feelings of being a “fraud” or being misunderstood helped her to dig deeply in uncovering her purpose
  • Do you feel like you only need to be known for one thing, and it’s weighing on your heart? Rhi struggled with the same concept, and we discuss why this philosophy doesn’t suit everyone, and that it’s okay to be multifaceted, multi-passionate, and have more than one purpose.
  • Rhiannon gives you clear and straightforward advice on how to uncover why it is you do what you do and how to quiet the noise that often gets in the way
  • With all of the businesses and facets to Rhi’s career, it would be easy for her to get overwhelmed. She uses a simple strategy to stay focused, and we discuss how you can use this strategy too
  • When Rhi started her business, she intentionally looked toward the future and asked herself, “what kind of life do I want?” She encourages you to ask that same question now, no matter where you are in your entrepreneurial journey
  • Rhi offers us a sobering reminder that the idea that we’ll have a ‘certain kind of life or business’ when we reach a ‘certain age’ isn’t attainable. Ask yourself, why can’t I have this now?
  • We talk about intention, and Rhi shares a philosophy she’s adapted from her life coach about splitting your time between things that need to get done vs. things you want to savor. It’s an eye-opening look at how we tend to speed through everything in life, especially through the moments we should stop to appreciate and enjoy.
  • Prone to apologizing all the time -- to friends, family, and clients? Rhi wants you to rethink the apology and offers a solid tip
  • Time is our most precious commodity -- how are you going to spend yours?
  • Imposter syndrome is real, especially when it comes to social media. If you are struggling with social media affecting your confidence, usurping your time, getting caught up in comparison, or one of the many side effects we’re ALL experiencing online -- Rhi shares her journey in powering down and intentionally walking away from social media
  • If social media is bringing you down, Rhi recommends coming up with a simple mission statement for how you want to use social media

015 | Shannon Pilcher: Empowering Others to Live with Passion, Purpose and Perspective | Trust, teamwork, and the power of choices19 Feb 201900:49:03

Success in life stems from the choices we make. From engineer, journalist and professional skydiver to coach, consultant, and business owner, Shannon’s life choices — good and bad — have helped him create an exceptionally fulfilling life. He spends more than 200 days each year traveling the world and sharing his experience and wisdom. Whether writing, speaking, skydiving or consulting, Shannon wants to share his lessons with you.

Shannon Pilcher is a world champion skydiver, educator, and entrepreneur who has spent 26 years traveling the globe and living life on his terms. He was an influential part of teams that pioneered high-speed parachute descents of some of the world’s most iconic mountain peaks, including the Dolomites (Italy), Mont Blanc (France), the fjords of Norway and the Grand Canyon. His work with high-performing teams and top-tier military units has earned him worldwide respect.

He is the co-founder of the Performance Designs Factory Team, a leading high-performance parachute flight team, and Flight-1, an education and training company that employs more than 25 consultants in more than 10 countries. He and his partners at Flight-1 have fostered a flat and autonomous corporate culture, intentionally mirroring many of the same values and procedures that contributed to their parachuting successes.

In 2010 Shannon suffered severe head and spine injuries during a high-speed parachute descent in the Swiss Alps. That accident and the story of his miraculous survival are captured in his team’s one-hour documentary on iTunes, entitled Sky Jumpers.

In 2018 he launched his podcast, Choices, with a renewed purpose to encourage others to make better choices after his accident.

In today’s episode of The Power in Purpose podcast, Shannon shares:

  • How a near-death experience after a skydiving accident flipped his perspective on life and how he wanted to live it -- and gave him a renewed purpose and helped him discover what’s meaningful in life
  • Shannon wants you to do more than “just get by,” and shares his renewed perspective to motivate you to push forward and find greater meaning
  • How being a type-A personality inhibits you from allowing things to emerge
  • Teamwork is a specialty of Shannon’s and he discusses how teamwork has been at the center of his life -- and what being an athlete taught him about teamwork

Maghon Taylor is the SHE behind All She Wrote Notes, a calligraphy and hand lettering studio based in Elon, North Carolina. Her work has been featured on many blogs and publications and she was named Best Calligrapher in the South by Southern Weddings.  Maghon has partnered to letter items and host events with national retailers such as West Elm, Neiman Marcus, Kendra Scott, Anthropologie, and Swoozies, as well as dozens of local businesses across North Carolina.

012 | I Have a Simple Question for You: Are you solving your customers problems?15 Jan 201900:16:07

For the past three weeks, I've had the best hair of my life.

It's bouncy, shiny, and healthy. I catch myself walking past mirrors, thinking, "damn, your hair looks good!" I am annoyed I don't have anywhere to go, you know, so that I can show off my bomb looking hair. The blow-out lasts for days (with a little help from dry shampoo and a silk scrunchie) and I'm over here wondering why I didn't invest in my hair care sooner.

You're probably saying, "OK, cool Candice. Thanks for showboating on your awesome hair, but what does this have to do with this podcast?"

A lot.

I'm going to tell you how a $350 hair dryer solved my problems, and ask you a simple question:

What problems are you solving for your customers?

I hope you enjoy today's episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast.

010 | Goal Setting: The post-it goal setting method that helps you visualize your goals and get more done18 Dec 201800:30:52

I love goal setting, do you? I've found that mapping out my goals is therapeutic and lets me put into writing what I want for myself both professionally and personally. The problem is I'm also a little shy when it comes to writing things down; I have a hard time visualizing my goals in a notebook, journal or even worse, online note-taking. I get overwhelmed at the blank page, get frustrated when my goals are entirely out of order and end up ripping the page out only to start the exhausting process over again.

Are you like me, in that, when it comes time to write your goals you struggle? You have goals in your head, you can almost see the big picture, but you get distracted, overwhelmed and end up not finishing what you started? I can't imagine I am alone in this!

On today's episode of the podcast, I am sharing my goal setting method using post-its. This method will transform how you intentionally set goals and help you map out the bigger picture.

I love this method because it lets me be free. I’m open to think about my goals without committing to writing them down on a page. I’m free to move them around if I find a mini goal or action item better serves another one of my main goals. I’m not worried about my handwriting, because I can always re-write a post it. I’m not concerned about things being out of order, because I can quickly move them around. I’m not worried about whether my goals align with my bigger picture, because I started out writing my goals with my bigger picture in mind.

This goal setting method gives you the freedom to change what you want to change, move your thoughts and ideas around, and visualize your future.

So, are you ready? I'm sure you're wondering how are we going to put these items to use -- and I've broken it down into steps to make it easy -- plus I have a free download for you at http://candicecoppola.com/goals to help you.

Happy goal setting!

009 | Goal Setting: The 5 reasons why your goals fail every year -- and what to do about it11 Dec 201800:19:02

This is the first episode in a two part series on goals -- and today, I'm sharing with you the top 5 years why your goals fail, year after year, and what you can do about it.

Goal setting is something I feel really strongly about; I’ve been setting goals for myself since I was a teenager, usually at the end or beginning of a new year. I know many of you are goal setters too-- and I think this episode is going to help push you past some mindsets that you have around goals. My goal with this episode is to shift your mindset, get you unstuck and out of goal setting habits that are not serving you well.

Are you like me, in that, when it comes time to write your goals you struggle? You have goals in your head, you can almost see the big picture, but you get distracted, overwhelmed and end up not finishing what you started? I can't imagine I am alone in this!

Once I discovered a goal setting system that worked, I started to uncover even more reasons why my goals were failing each year. So, lets jump into how you can set better goals, and the mindsets around goals that hold us back.

008 | Mary Marantz: Building a Legacy Brand | Stop asking how, who and what-- and start asking why04 Dec 201801:18:31

I’ve known Mary Marantz for many years, and one thing that has always struck me about Mary was her willingness to share her story; not just the pretty side of her story-- not the wins, or her success-- but the lessons she learned in the mess.

She is an internationally renowned photographer, author, educator, and speaker who travels the world teaching and inspiring other creative business owners. She has been named a “Legend of Light” by Profoto as well as one of the Top 100 photographers by SLR Lounge & Brandsmash. You can find her work in many high-end publications, including Martha Stewart, Well Wed & Inside Weddings. She is also the founder & Editor in Chief of twin wedding blogs The Black Tie Bride & The Well Groomed Groom.

However, she comes from very humble beginnings, and life didn’t always look like it does now.

Mary is on a mission to help all of us build a legacy brand-- not just a business-- but a brand that stands the test of time. In this episode, she shares her journey and the critical moment in her childhood where she began to uncover her purpose. Her father, a proud West Virginia logger and 2nd generation owner of the family business, lost everything. It was in that moment that Mary began to understand that we were all born to do something in our lives-- but sometimes, even with the most exceptional talent and intention, we fail because don’t have the right tools or resources to make our purpose profitable.

This episode is a powerful one that has resonated with me every single day since I had the chance to interview Mary. Her story and her words have transformed me, and I know you will be, too.

In this episode of The Power in Purpose Podcast, Mary shares:

  • Her life growing up in rural West Virginia and the lessons it taught her
  • How she discovered and uncovered her purpose at an early age
  • Growing up poor and the call she felt for a “life of success,” which led her to Yale Law School
  • Her and her husband's decision to forego the safe, set and suppose to, choosing instead to take a big leap and build a business
  • The powerful mindset of not being successful but rather, significant
  • How she categorizes businesses as either a weed, flower or tree-- and how you can build a business that has strong roots and bares fruit
  • Mary shares with us some foundational principles in business, so we can build a brand that leads with our purpose
  • Her belief that finding your why cannot be rushed
  • An important discussion on how we ask others “how” and “who” and “what” as it relates to our business-- but we rarely ask the question, why?
  • Mary challenges you with this simple question: OK, but why?
  • The greatest lesson her father taught her-- anything that’s worth doing is worth doing well
  • Acknowledging your instant gratification mindset and how to move away from it, embracing slow growth = strong roots instead
  • In a world full of noise, Mary encourages us to listen to the right people as it relates to our business-- and shares what you should be looking for when you seek a mentor
  • Staying the course in your business when things get tough, or when you feel like your not gaining traction
  • How her morning routine of “win the day” has transformed her mindset, along with other daily routines she has to feed her mind, body, and soul
  • I ask Mary if she’s ever suffered from imposter syndrome, and she shares her answer along with her thoughts on why we suffer from imposter syndrome
  • Mary shares how purpose has changed her life and her business-- and who inspires her with their purpose
  • We learn more about her upcoming book, including the working title and what her book is all about!

Kristy Rice is on a mission to inspire Art for Joy’s Sake-- and she wants you to pick up a paint brush and experience the joy of creating art for no one else but yourself. My friend Kristy has been an artist since the humble age of 6, where her parents could find her under the covers with a flashlight creating art. Over the last 15 years, she has parlayed her artistic talent into a variety of highly successful businesses: she’s the owner of Momental Designs, a stationery company that creates hand painted works of art for all the moments in life worth celebrating, a published author of 8 books (soon to be 9!), and the creator of so many physical products that feature her artistic talents.

Kristy’s artwork has been commissioned by celebrities like Sean Parker, Jessica Simpson and Katy Perry-- while her artwork has been featured everywhere from Good Morning America to Martha Stewart Weddings.

In today’s episode, we dive deeper into the several projects Kristy’s explored: how she wrote her first 8 books, how she scored licensing deals with big brands like BHLDN, T.J. Maxx and Target, and what it’s really like to create and sell physical products.

  • How to pitch to companies -- using Emily Ley as an example
  • The process of moving into physical products, what it has been like-- and how you can do it too
  • How relationships helped leverage her online product shop
  • Kristy’s philosophy on teaching and scarcity mindset
  • Why you should be building a community
  • How discovering her purpose has changed her life and her business

Eliana Baucicault is a celebrated wedding and event planner in Atlanta, Georgia with a career that has spanned over a decade. She built a 6-figure event planning company, EllyB Events, working with some of the top celebrities and influencers on celebrating moments that matter to them. She started out like most entrepreneurs-- wanting to be the most sought after and best in her field.

Celebrating diverse love stories, families, and business owners has become Eliana's mission.

Her purpose encouraged her to author her first book, B Inspired: The Book, an inspirational look book that was an instant success. The catalyst behind her book: so a woman of color could walk through a bookstore and see her face on the cover. She also want to inspire anyone no matter of their race through curated event design.

Pretty powerful stuff.

With the success of her book came a new idea: a curated magazine, featuring a wide range of celebrations from weddings to baby showers, that prominently features persons of color and business owners of color.

  • What it was like for her as a woman of color starting her business
  • How the industry has changed and the changes it needs to make
  • What she’s sacrificed in order to build her business
  • How she sees her magazine as more than a magazine, but a legacy for others
  • What she would and wouldn’t do differently
  • How she never thought this would be something she’d be doing
