Episode 429: How to Build Your Daycare to Sell (Even if you Never do) with IMPACT 26 Keynote speaker,Tieja Heikkila13 Dec 202500:22:02

What happens to your business when the economy shifts, jobs disappear, and your clients start feeling the pressure before you do?

How resilient is your pricing, your positioning, and your client base if AI starts replacing roles your customers rely on?

And what really changes when you experience Dom's coaching in person — not through a screen, not in theory, but live and unfiltered?

In this episode, Dom pulls back the curtain on why Teija Heikkilä was the only choice for keynote speaker at IMPACT 2026 — and why her message lands harder now than ever before. Teija isn't talking hypotheticals. She's built, scaled, and sold multiple pet care businesses, and now helps owners do the same through PetVetMa. Her lens is simple, uncomfortable, and powerful: every business owner exits — the only question is how well.

You'll hear Dom and Teija in conversation discussing premium pricing, asset value, exit planning, and a topic most people are skirting around: AI and the knock-on effect it will have on jobs, income, and consumer behaviour.

Not from a "tech bro" angle — but from a practical, business-owner perspective. If your clients lose income, change jobs, or feel uncertain… what does that mean for your business? And how do you insulate yourself from that now?

Alongside that, Dom shares behind-the-scenes insight from a recent in-person consultation day with Adam Elderfield, PBIC Marketer of the Year. In a single day, they fixed leaks, uncovered hidden money, ruled out entire business directions Adam didn't want — and mapped a clearer, more profitable future. Dom explains why this kind of clarity simply doesn't happen by accident… and why events like IMPACT compress years of trial and error into days.

You'll also hear a teaser about the 2026 PBIC Marketer of the Year, what's coming next, and why the people who win in this industry are always the ones willing to get in the room, challenge their thinking, and build businesses designed to last — not just survive.

In this episode, you'll discover:

  • Why Teija's Perspective Is Different – Built it. Sold it. Repeated it. And now teaches owners how to do the same.
  • AI, Jobs & the Economy – How shifts outside your business can quietly wreck unprepared ones — and how to stay ahead.
  • Build It to Sell (Even If You Never Do) – Why exit thinking makes your business stronger today, not later.
  • What In-Person Coaching Really Unlocks – Why one focused day beats months of calls and content.
  • Why IMPACT Isn't Just Another Event – Strategy, pressure, perspective, and momentum — live, not theoretical.

If you want to understand where the industry is heading — and how to build a business that thrives no matter what changes next — then IMPACT 2026 is where those conversations are happening.

If you're tired of being busy, burned out, and underpaid… and you're ready to transform your daycare into a premium, experience-heavy, profit-driven powerhouse… this is the event you've been waiting for.

Episode 428: It's Time to Disnify Your Dog Daycare: Get Your FAST-PASS Ticket to Success!05 Dec 202500:22:41

What if you could transform your daycare into the Disney of your town, the place affluent owners brag about, pay more for, and refuse to leave?

What would happen to your business if you mastered experience, enrichment, pricing, systems, and upsells in just two days?

And what could next year look like if you finally stopped running a wacky warehouse… and started running a wonderland for dogs?

In this week's episode, I come in hot with the announcement I've been dying to make: The Disnify Your Dog Daycare LIVE Impact Success Summit is coming to ORLANDO in 2026. And it's going to be the biggest, boldest, most transformational event I have ever delivered.

Before diving into the details, I recap an emotional and breakthrough-filled week inside the UK Elite Mastermind – complete with hotseats, tears, major wins, as well as behavioural psychology insights from guest speaker Mike Samuels, and a stack of 90-day action plans that will fuel major business growth well into the new year.

Then, I unveil the full vision behind the 2026 Impact Summit, and how those smart enough to attend will walk away having become experts on premium pricing, systemisation, ascension, upsells, staff culture, enrichment, and showmanship… this is the ultimate masterclass for dog daycare and pet resort owners who want to rise above the competition.

In this episode, you'll discover:

The Magic of Experience – How to use Disney's "Everything Speaks" principle to make every square foot of your facility sell for you.
•    The Business of Enchantment – Why the next generation of premium pet care is EXPERIENCE-led, not operationally led.
•    How to Imagineer Your Empire – The exit-ready operations map that makes your business scalable, sellable, and self-running.
•    Ascension Secrets – Disney's client journey playbook and how to turn one service into multiple revenue streams.
•    Showmanship & Sales Choreography – How to turn your staff into cast members who sell confidently and consistently.

If you're tired of being busy, burned out, and underpaid… and you're ready to transform your daycare into a premium, experience-heavy, profit-driven powerhouse… this is the event you've been waiting for.

Episode 419: The Future is Enrichment: What to Expect at This Year's Pet Care Enrichment Summit26 Sep 202500:13:53

Are you leaving money on the table by treating enrichment like an optional extra instead of a core service?

Do you know how to package and price your enrichment services so they actually make you money?

And wouldn't it help to see what's working right now for daycares, trainers, and even zookeepers around the world?

In this episode, I lift the lid on the upcoming Pet Care Enrichment Summit 2025—the only event of its kind dedicated to turning enrichment into a profit centre for your pet business.

You'll hear from Tim Jackson, Dean of Enrich U, about his brand-new "House of Enrichment" presentation and the always-popular Dog Daycare Owners Round Table.

Plus, I run through the full lineup—from aquariums to puppy classes to zoo-led innovation—and explains why this year's agenda is even stronger than the last.

You'll also hear from Adam Delderfield, who shares how to make puppy classes more enriching (for both dogs and owners), and why those classes can become the perfect feeder into your enrichment-based daycare. This summit will show you exactly how to add fresh ideas, raise your standards, and sell enrichment in a way that clients love and staff can deliver with confidence.

In this episode, you'll discover:

• Why Enrichment is the Future – And why daycares who ignore it will get left behind.
• The House of Enrichment – Tim Jackson's deep dive into origins, pillars, and practical application.
• Zoo-Wee-Mama Inspiration – How ideas from aquariums and safari parks can transform your daycare.
• Profitable Puppy Classes – Adam's blueprint for turning training into an enrichment upsell.

329 - Why Santa Can't Save Your Pet Business!22 Dec 202300:34:11

Have you written a letter to Father Christmas telling him what a good pet business owner you have been this year?

Have you asked him for all the nice things your pet business needs to be a success in 2024?

It would be nice if all we had to do was create a wish list, leave it beside the chimney and wait for the magic to happen, but sadly, that's NOT how business works.

Did you know, you will dramatially increase your chances of hitting your goals if you are crystal clear about WHAT you want, and more importantly, WHO you are targetting.

See, if you aren't specific about WHO you want to work with, then you'll get anyone with a dog and a wallet (or purse) turning up at your business door. That includes pain in the ass, cheapskate clients who are demanding, unappreciatve and generally a nightmare to work with.

And there have been changes in the economy this year - with rising costs and inflation - that mean you simply can't build a profitable business around clients who can't afford, or aren't willing to pay your increased prices.

Fear ye not, for in this festive episode, the Pet Biz Wiz will show you how target clients who can afford to pay your business the income you want!

Tune is to discover;

  • Why it's ok - and I positively encourage you - to target affluent dog owners in 2024
  • What these big spending dog owners are looking for in a 'premium service'
  • How being premium, and targetting premium clients has enabled me to create a super profitable and FUN business.
  • Why the success you experience next year is directly tied to the decisions you make NOW
  • You'll hear how one of my private clients has built a super profitable pet care business around a 'small dog' niche
  • And much, much more...

418: Lessons Learned at the Dog Handler Academy Leadership Summit (Plus, 2025 Pet Care Enrichment Summit Sneak Peak…)19 Sep 202500:22:03

What do experienced pet business owners actually talk about behind closed doors at leadership events?

Is it worth travelling across the Atlantic just to sit in a conference room with people you could speak to on Zoom?

And do you ever feel like you know what you need to do, but can never work out how to take action?

In this episode, I give you an exclusive peek behind the scenes of the Dog Handler Academy Leadership Summit in Chicago—hosted by Eve Molzhon and attended by some of the most ambitious pet business owners in the country. I talk about the true value of being in the same room as industry-leaders, and why high-level face-to-face conversations beat exchanging messages in a Facebook group.

You'll hear from Eve what seasoned business owners are still hungry to learn, how the event created space for deep connection (and serious sales breakthroughs), and why I think this style of focused, strategic gathering is the future of pet industry education. Plus, if you weren't in the room on this occasion you'll still get to hear about my talk 'The Magic Touch' which covered how you can engineer better customer experiences that set you apart from the competition without breaking the bank.

In this episode, you'll discover:

If you've ever wondered what a truly Disnified doggy daycare looks like, then you need to listen to this weeks guest Gary Khachatryan,  the CEO of South Park Doggieland.

Gary grew up in Armenia and was fearful of dogs as a child, before moving to the USA when he was 10 years old. He had a number of sales jobs, before working for a fortune 500 company for seven years.

Then he followed his passion for dogs and opened his first daycare 13 years ago in Downtown Los Angeles, before opening his second location 5 years later.

During the pandemic Gary had the brainwave to introduce doggie adventure playparks to the market, and it was here the Disnifying concept took root.

Now he has created a truly Disnified experience where the dogs in his care do activities like football, swimming, movie nights and arts and crafts - including 26 courses.

This concept has developed so now the dogs enjoy a total immersive learning experience, with a canine curriculum.

Tune in to discover;

  • Why offering fun activities for dogs taps into the clients nostalgic feelings the owners have about growing up

Episode 316 - Why Better Processes Mean Less Pet Business Headaches, with Consultant Phillip Paris22 Sep 202300:57:07

Do you run a busy mess of a pet care facility?

Do you lack the systems and procedures that are required for success?

Are you overwhelmed with where to start because you are always firefighting problems?

Then you're in luck, because in this episode I'm talking to pet business coach, consultant and mentor, Phillip Paris, who runs the aptly named Phillip Paris Consultants.

I met Phil at the Pet Boarding and Daycare Expo in Vegas, where I caught one of his presentations about taking the pain out of processes and procedures, and I was really impressed with his knowledge and skillset.

Phil grew up in Austin Texas, where he attended community college and then became a cop, a role he held for 17 years. For the last 10 years with law enforcement he worked as a canine officer. Because of this role he ended up giving dog advice to anyone who asked, which is how he eventually segued into leaving the police and becoming a dog trainer.

In 2010 he opened his own facility, and in 2016 he trasitioned to coaching and consulting, so he could pass on his hard earned knowledge to other facilty owners.

Phil talks through what his onsite consultation looks like, and why processes NOT people are the key to a well run, successful doggydaycare.

Tune in to discover;

  • How Phil launched an online side of his dog training business, where he created DVD's that were distributed in libraries.
  • Why Phil likes to teach through stories when he is speaking and consulting
  • How he ended up as Keynote speaker at Pet Boarding and Daycare expo - top tip you can copy here...
  • How Phil had a pricing breakthrough listening to Teija Heikkila at a pet boarding conference  - another reason for you to attend conferences...
  • Also, why Phil DOESN'T like pet puns, which is a real shame because this is a truly 'pawsome' episode....

This is a very open and honest interview with someone who is adding a lot of value to the industry. Many thanks for sharing Phil!

  • After a successful decade in education, Amy felt something was missing from her life. Around the time husband Bill was doing an MBA and happened to be doing a business plan for a dog business. He realised that there was a real need for quality pet care in Charlotte.

So, in 2014 Amy highjacked Bills idea and Social Pet Hotel was born. She shares the business origin story, how they built an amazing team and expanded to a second location with a third just about to open.

    Tune in to discover;

  • Why they Social Pet Resort switched from regular daycare to an enrichment model
  • Why not coming from a pet care back ground was an advantage when innovating and changing the daycare offering
  • How they switched existing clients to the enrichment model <-- great advice here from Amy
  • Why launching a daycare means involves lot of hustle, bootstrapping and reinvesting. Amy didn't take a salary for two months.
  • Why offering an enrichment model enables you to stand out from the crowd AND charge higher prices.
  • How Amy is marketing her third daycare differently than when she opened her first daycare.
  • And much, much more...

Thanks to Amy for being so open and honest in this inspiring conversation.

Episode 306 - Transforming the Canine Care Industry One KleanBowl at a Time, with Alex Mckinnon14 Jul 202300:50:47

Have you ever had an idea for a pet product and wondered how to take it to market?

Then tune in because in episode 306 I'm talking to Alex McKinnon of Kinn Inc, who has successfully taken a bunch of products to market that help doggy daycare and boarding businesses save time and money, have sustainabilty at the heart of the design AND also employs disadvantaged people.

Alex was born in Florida, but travelled all over the US, and ended up at Duke University where he studied History and Spanish.

His passion for all things Spanish led to him moving to Barcelona where he worked in a coffee shop before being hired by Braun to work on product innovation. He went back to the USA to study and got his MBA in international business and finance, before working and living in Germany working on Brauns coffee products division.

In 2011, after moving back to the USA Alex discovered that a lot of vets were struggling to give dogs medication, so he developed a pill crushing product.

Through further research with his vet friend, Alex discovered that simply putting a dog bowl in a dishwasher doesn't kill salmonella and a bunch of stomach viruses, which ultimitely led to the creating of Kinns flaghip product, the Kleanbowl.

Alex talks us through the whole Kleanbowl joureny, including the research, design, manufacture and marketing of his amazing product.

Tune in to discover;

* The value of doing time studies in your pet business to see where you, and your staff can be more efficient

* How speaking to client about the problems they are facing will lead you to develop a profitable pet product solution

* Why pet production innovation is about product iterration, as you'll rarely get it 100% right the first time.

* The breakthrough moment when Alex realised he was in the time and money saving buiness, rather than the sanitation and environmental business.

* How the right kind of feeding bowl can change the canine world!

Alex is a super smart and passionate pet professional and you'll get SO much value from hearing his inspirational story.

Episode 305 - The Pet Business Premium Pricing Secret07 Jul 202300:31:49

You ever wondered how some pet businesses can get away with charging super high prices, and they always seem full?

Did you think the reason is because they have more experience, offer a better service or live in a more affluent area than you?

Well....you'd be wrong.

A premium pet business is possible for any pet professional, and I'd highly recommend you do this becuase being premium brings a TON of benefits, like;

Better clients who will gladly pay higher prices, buy all your upsells and refer their affluent dog owning friends.

You can give your clients a better service, with less running around and chasing your tail that you need to do when you charge low prices.

And your 'premium prices' lead to premium values, which you wear like a cloak of confidence

So, what's stopping you doing this?

Well, that's what I'm sharing in this weeks episode of the podcast.

This is a deep dive on pricing, money mindset and I'm sharing some actionable profit boosters you can plug into your pet business immediately.

What are you waiting for? Dive in now...

Episode 301 - Improving the Pet Care Industry with Carmen Rustenbeck from International Boarding and Pet Services Association02 Jun 202301:01:22

This weeks podcast guest is Carmen Rustenbeck, who is the founder and CEO of the International Boarding and Pet Services Association.

Carmen was born and raised in Gorgia to a military family, before moving to Arizona after her father returned from Vietnam.

She married her highschool sweetheart Rusty who was in the airforce, and they spent the next 23 years living all over the world including five years in the U.K, and now reside on the top of a mountain in New Mexico.

Carmen did a number of different jobs all over the world, but discovered the pet care industry when she landed a temp job in Colarado, which led to an opportunity to work with the American Boarding Kennel Association. Carmen loved working with passionate pet business owner, and this sparked passion for non-profits.

3 months into her new job Hurricane Katrina happened and Carmen was tasked with creating a non-profit organisation in 3 weeks, which she managed to do!

This mean they could accept money and donations to buy food and work with AKC to rescue and rehome animals.

The whole Katrina experience was a huge learning curve, and like crisis situation, it brought some unique challenges like transfer of infectious diseases with pet care facitlies.

A year of two later Carmen could see there was a need for a new organisation that helps educate and support ambious, heart-centered pet-preneurs, and so the IBPSA was born.

Carmen did revolutionary things with the IBPSA which when it launched in 2010 was the only non-profit organisation to be totally online.

In order to provide the essential resources she knew the IBPSA would need Carmen asked some crucial questions about the vision for the furture of the industry, like;  What does education look like for employees? What does a business plan look like for a facility? What does exit planning look like? What does succession planing look like so you can pass your business onto the next generation?

Carmen wanted the IBPSA to look beyond just the world of dogs and be able to provide resources and education for feline, equine, avian and small and exotic animals so she had vetrinarians create the care plans and then tested it in a facilty in Dripping Springs.

Now the organisation has 4 remote full time staff, around 1000 members and its growing all the time. They also run a conference every year in Orlando, which I am attending and speaking at.

Tune in to discover;

  • How the IBPSA took best practises and trainings from other organisations to provide the best resources for their members.
  • Why it's crucial you have a succession plan for your business, something Carmen saw at first hand when the ABKA went bankrupt.
  • Why travelling not only broadens your horizons, but makes the world seem smaller, AND more accessible - this is something I've discovered in the last year
  • You'll also learn about British refrigerators, furniture for dogs, international currency, and much, much more...this is a wide ranging, informative and hughly entertaining interview with a leading light in the pet care industry.

Carmens passion for pet care owners and the values of the IBPSA really shine through in this interview. Enjoy!

Episode 293 - From Home Schooling Dogs to National Dog Training Franchise, with Brian Claeys from All Dogs Unleashed06 Apr 202300:48:31

This weeks guest is dog trainer and entreprenuer Brian Claeys, who runs All Dogs Unleashed, a national dog training, boarding and daycare franchise across the USA.

Brian grew up in Iowa where he enjoyed spending time with hunting and bird dogs. He did some schooling in Colarado before returning to Iowa where he held a number of sales jobs, whilst learning the dog training business ropes at Midwest Dog Training.

He then teamed up with best friend, and fellow dog trainer Travis Lux, and they dived into their own dog training business.

The business was born sat on the couch, where they decided on a name, wrote the business plan, built the website, and lo and behold, when they turned the website on clients started appearing!

Initially, Travis ran the business from his apartment in Texas, then in 2007 Brian moved down and they bought a house together, and ran the business from home. The next year they bought a house each and expanded the client base, while they saved up to afford to lease their own facility, which they opened in 2010.

Outgrowing the original facility they bought some land on which they built the facility that became the blueprint for the All Dogs Unleashed Franchise, which has 19 locations throughout the USA.

This is an enlightening and educating interview, as Brian takes us on the rollercoaster adventure of scaling up and franchising a dog training business.

Tune in to discover;

  • Why you need to be agressive with marketing when you are starting out with your pet business
  • The benefits of investing in a franchise to grow your pet business, rather than doing it on your own.
  • Why the best dog trainer is the most well known dog trainer, and why sales and marketing are the most important functions of a dog training business.
  • Why happy customers are the best sales ambassadors for your training business

Episode 415: Back to School (for YOU, Not your Kids): Where Smart Pet Pros Learn to Grow29 Aug 202500:24:17

Are you blindly chasing every trend instead of doubling down on what actually works?

Do you mistake creating aimless content for growing the reach of your business?

And when was the last time you truly thought for yourself when refining your marketing message?

In this reflective solo episode, I kick off the "dog days of summer" by taking a fresh look at the real value of going "back to school"—not for your dog, not for your kids, but for YOU. I discuss why it's a bad idea for pet pros to be blindly copying trends, and the dangers of business owners outsourcing their brain to AI. I also explores what it really means to keep learning and leading in the pet industry.

You'll hear how I curate my own ongoing education through books, newsletters, podcasts, and business biographies—and how I use that input to fuel content creation, client breakthroughs, and smart strategy. I also share why most pet businesses don't need a new idea… they need to execute the timeless fundamentals better and with more personality.

In this episode, you'll discover:

• The Real Reason Most Trends Flop – Why copying other pet pros rarely results in profit.

• Be Careful Who You Outsource To (Especially AI) – Why relying on bots to create your content is a fast-track to irrelevance.

• Inputs vs. Outputs – How I consume books and newsletters on purpose to sharpen what I teach.

• The Three Growth Levers (That Still Work) – Price. Clients. Upsells. It's not sexy, but it's what scales.

• Put You Back Into Your Marketing – Why personality-rich content is the moat around your business.

This episode is a timely reminder that you can't outsource your voice, your vision, or your values. Always remember the clients are buying into YOU, not just your services.
