Why Is He Like This?! Parenting Boys with ADHD—What It Looks Like (and Feels Like) From the Inside Out09 Jun 202500:11:42

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. This is the place where personal experience meets clinical expertise—because families don’t heal in isolation. They heal together.

If you’re parenting a boy with ADHD, you’ve likely asked yourself, “Why is he like this?!” Maybe you’ve been told he’s disrespectful, lazy, or doesn’t listen. Maybe you’ve tried reward charts, punishments, threats, and consequences—but nothing seems to stick. You’re not alone.

ADHD in boys often shows up as high energy, impulsivity, emotional outbursts, and what looks like defiance. But what’s really happening underneath is a brain that’s moving too fast, struggling with regulation, and desperately trying to keep up with a world that doesn’t always make sense to it.

Let’s get into what’s really going on—and what your son actually needs.

Unmasking ADHD in Girls: Understanding Their Unique Struggles!!!09 Jun 202500:28:00

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist and Parenting Strategist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades.

This is the place where personal experience meets clinical expertise—because families don’t heal in isolation. They heal together.

If you’re parenting a daughter with ADHD, you might be surprised to learn just how often her symptoms are overlooked, misread, or misunderstood. Girls with ADHD are often people-pleasers, chronic perfectionists, and emotional shapeshifters. They’re expert maskers, which means they work hard to hide the chaos they feel inside.

They don’t always disrupt the classroom. Instead, they stare out the window. They don’t usually get labeled as “bad”—they’re labeled as “sensitive,” “anxious,” or “moody.” Because their behavior doesn’t look like typical hyperactivity, they’re often misdiagnosed—or missed altogether.

Girls with inattentive-type ADHD often internalize their symptoms. They may mask in public but unravel at home. They are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or depression—when ADHD is the root issue.

Forks, Feelings, and Frontal Lobes: The Neurology of Family Dinner for Neurodivergent Kids!!!!25 May 202500:20:47
Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist specializing in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. So what you hear today isn’t just clinical—it's lived experience, it’s layered, and it’s honest.

Today's episode is all about why family dinner matters—and how something as simple as sitting down together each night can shape your child’s identity, executive functioning, nervous system, and emotional development. Starting this when they are young is highly encouraged. Let’s dive in!!

To the untrained eye, asking a child to “set the table” might look like a basic household chore. But to a therapist, educator, or neuroscientist, it’s a brilliant opportunity to build core executive functioning skills the brain’s high-level tools for planning, organization, impulse control, emotional regulation, and follow-through.

This one five-minute ritual engages multiple executive domains, especially for children with ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing differences. It’s embedded in rhythm, connected to relationship, and disguised as an ordinary family task. But in truth—it’s daily brain training.

Hey Parents !!!! Are you tired of the Chaos? Start Saying “No.” Your Neurodivergent Child Needs It. No Isn’t Rejection—It’s Redirection!!24 May 202500:52:22

"Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast.

I know what it feels like to second-guess your parenting decisions, to lie awake at night wondering if you were too harsh or not firm enough, and to carry the weight of wanting so badly to get it right—for a child who feels things more deeply, reacts more intensely, and needs more from you than most people understand.

This podcast is where clinical insight meets real life. Because peace isn’t perfect—but it is possible. And most days, it starts with showing up. Imperfectly, but consistently. With a deep breath and a willingness to learn.

So if you’ve ever wondered:

  • Am I being too strict?
  • Am I being too soft?
  • Why do my kid’s reactions feel so big—and why do mine feel even bigger?
  • How do I stay calm when my child is anything but?
  • And what do I do when nothing seems to work?

You’re in the right place. I’ve asked myself those same questions more times than I can count—and I want to walk through the answers with you, one compassionate, honest conversation at a time.

Today’s episode is a big one—and honestly, it’s one I wish someone had handed me years ago.

We’re diving into: How your parenting style literally shapes your child’s brain, behavior, and self-worth—especially when you’re raising a neurodivergent child.

This episode is for educational purposes and to provide support. They’re not a substitute for professional mental health evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment.”

Yep!!! ADHD Is a Family Affair: Understanding the Roles Everyone Plays!!!23 May 202500:42:22

So what you hear today isn’t just clinical—it's lived experience, it’s layered, and it’s honest.

Today, I want to talk about the part of ADHD that doesn’t get enough airtime: how it quietly shapes the entire family system. Not just the child with the diagnosis, but the sibling who becomes 'the easy one.' The parent who slowly becomes the household manager. The partner who fades into the background. The joy that gets replaced by survival.

In this episode, we’re naming the silent impact—and giving you tools to repair it.”

“It’s Not Opposition—It’s Dopamine Why Your Partner with ADHD Shuts Down During Tasks They Don’t Want to Do!!!.19 May 202500:26:31

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son and have been married for over three decades. Here, we talk about the messy, real-life intersections of mental health and relationships—with clarity, compassion, and practical tools you can use today.

Let me ask you something:

Have you ever asked your partner to do something—something totally reasonable, like take out the trash or help with dinner—and they suddenly act like you’ve just asked them to run a marathon barefoot?

Your partner’s struggle with “simple” tasks isn’t laziness or selfishness. It’s executive dysfunction. And dopamine is the driver.

Let’s break that down.

Executive dysfunction refers to the difficulties people with ADHD have when it comes to starting tasks, planning ahead, switching gears, staying organized, or remembering to follow through. It's like the brain's CEO is off-duty—or stuck in traffic. Even if they want to help or get things done, their brain struggles to coordinate the steps required.

ADHD or Narcissism? Understanding What’s Really Going On15 May 202500:11:14

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley, an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. Around here, we keep things honest, practical, and rooted in what actually helps not just theories. Today’s episode is one that comes up a lot with families I work with, especially when a parent or partner is staring at someone they love thinking, “Wait… is this ADHD… or are they just really self-centered?” You’re not imagining it, some of the behaviors we see in ADHD and narcissistic personality traits do look similar on the surface. But understanding the why… behind those behaviors…..That’s where things get really different

How ADHD Can Get Misread as Narcissism When ADHD is undiagnosed or unsupported, it can start to look narcissistic: The constant forgetfulness can appear selfish. The need for stimulation can appear reckless.

A Path To Possibility: How Solution Focused Therapy Supports Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, OCD & Bipolar Disorder!!14 May 202500:07:52

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast, where we explore the tools, truths, and tiny steps that lead to big changes. I’m your host, Stephanie Buckley, an AMFT therapist, mom, and fellow traveler on this journey to peace. Today, we’re diving into a powerful approach that shifts the spotlight from problems to possibilities: Solution-Focused Therapy. Let’s explore how this method helps individuals and families facing depression, anxiety, ADHD, OCD, and bipolar disorder reclaim a sense of hope, direction, and strength.

First, What Is Solution-Focused Therapy? Solution-Focused Therapy—or SFT—is a short-term, goal-directed approach that centers on solutions, not problems. Rather than digging deep into the past, Solution Focused Therapy asks, “What’s working?” and “What will life look like when things get better?” It’s based on the belief that people already have the resources and strengths they need—and that with the right questions, they can access those tools.

Help!! I Want To Pitch to the CEO.....Not the Receptionist: Sales Strategies for Successful Parenting!!08 Jun 202500:15:00

This podcast is where we turn therapeutic insight into parenting strategy—and help you build a home where peace isn’t just possible, it’s the default. Let’s dive in.

By Using Sales Psychology and Family Neuroscience to Time Your Parenting for Maximum Impact you will be able to Pitch to the CEO, Not the Receptionist: Here are some Sales Strategies for successful Emotional Parenting.

If your child isn’t listening, isn’t following through, or seems to “shut down” every time you try to correct them… you might be pitching to the wrong person.

In sales, if you pitch your product to the front desk receptionist, it doesn’t matter how perfect your offer is—the deal won’t close. You need to get to the decision-maker. The CEO. The one with authority, logic, and access to long-term planning.

In parenting, that CEO is your child’s prefrontal cortex the part of the brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control, working memory, and emotional regulation. But here’s the problem: when your child is upset, stressed, tired, or overstimulated? The CEO clocks out. And the amygdala—aka the brain’s emotional receptionist—takes over.

Parenting Through Divorce Series Part 3: Is It ADHD Or Is It The Divorce?25 Apr 202500:15:11

Although I'm still married, I am also a child of divorce, In fact, my father had multiple divorces—and I know what it’s like to grow up in a fractured family system. Around here, we keep it honest, grounded, and always focused on what works.

Today, we’re continuing our Parenting Through Divorce Series with an episode that answers a question I take into consideration all the time: Is it ADHD or is it the divorce? When II'm working with new clients. Because sometimes what looks like inattention, defiance, or emotional overload is actually a child struggling with the stress of a fractured family system. So let’s break it down.

Is Your Anxiety Baseline Too High? Here's How To Tell & How To Fix It!16 Apr 202500:22:15

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m your host, Stephanie Buckley — an AMFT solution-focused therapist specializing in ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, and Bipolar Disorder. I’m also a mother to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son and i've been married for over three decades. I bring both professional training and personal experience to the work I do — and to every episode of this podcast.

This podcast is where insight meets empathy — a space for parents, caregivers, and concerned adults to find clarity, compassion, and real support as they navigate the challenges of raising neurodivergent kids. Today, we are talking about anxiety. “Most of us know when we’re anxious. But, my question to you, do you know what your.... normal is? Today we’re diving into the idea of a personal anxiety baseline. I’ll walk you through what it means, how to figure yours out, and why identifying it can help you better manage anxious spirals before they escalate. As a therapist, I’ve seen again and again—when clients learn their baseline, they reclaim control. So let’s talk about it.”

Solo But Social: Raising An Only Child Who Knows How To Share!!16 Apr 202500:12:37

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I'm Stephanie Buckley, an AMFT Marriage and Family Solution-Focused Therapist and a mother with real-life experience raising a thriving, creative neurodivergent 22 year old son. With over three decades of marriage, I blend my professional expertise in Solution-Focused Therapy with personal stories and practical insights to help families navigate life’s challenges. I am also a firm believer in the power of small things being done consistently can exact change.

If you're parenting an only child, you’ve likely seen it happen, a friend comes over for a playdate, reaches for your child’s favorite toy, and suddenly, emotions run high. Without siblings to regularly navigate back-and-forth play or cooperation, every toy can feel deeply personal and entirely their own.

So what do we do when sharing feels like too much? In today’s episode, we’re diving into one of the most common parenting dilemmas: How do I teach my child to share without forcing it? This conversation goes beyond toy squabbles—because true sharing isn’t about sacrifice, it’s about security.

We’ll unpack what I like to call “The Protected Pick” a simple, respectful tool that turns everyday playdates into powerful lessons in boundaries, self-respect, and real empathy. Let’s get into it.

Raising a Man, Not a Dependent: 5 Core Life Lessons Fathers Need to Teach Their Sons!!03 Jun 202500:11:46

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and today, we’re talking about five foundational life skills every father must teach his son—not just to help him function, but to help him thrive.

Before we dive in, let’s pause to answer a foundational question:What is a Father—Psychologically Speaking? A father isn’t just a provider or protector. Psychologically, a father is a primary attachment figure who plays a central role in helping a child form their identity, internalize discipline, and navigate the world with autonomy. In developmental psychology, the father's role is often described as scaffolding—offering support and structure as a child climbs toward independence. When done right, this scaffolding supports the development of secure attachment, executive fun

Personality Tests: The Must-Have Parent’s Playbook for Launching Teens & Young Adults into Their Best-Fitting Career29 Mar 202500:27:21

Welcome back to The Path to Peace  Therapy Podcast, I'm Stephanie Buckley, a Marriage and Family Solution Focused Therapist and a mother with real-life experience raising a thriving, creative neurodivergent son. With over 3 decades of marriage, I blend  my professional expertise in Solution-Focused Therapy with personal stories and practical insights to help families navigate life’s challenges.

In this episode, I dive  into how to help your high school teen or young adult explore different career paths. Learn how personality type assessments—like the Myers-Briggs, Big Five, and Enneagram—can open conversations about future goals, lifestyle preferences, and the kind of work environment that suits your teen best. The discussion also covers trade schools for more hands-on learners, as well as travel-heavy and traditional professional careers (doctors, lawyers, psychiatrists, etc.). Finally, Stephanie touches on less conventional routes, such as sports agent, musician, influencer, government roles, and military paths.

Personality Test Links:
  1. MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)

  2. Big Five (OCEAN Model)

  3. Enneagram

Discussion Starters:

“How do you see yourself thriving—leading a team, working alone, or something in between?”
“Are you drawn to jobs that let you travel or live abroad?”
“How do you feel about spending 2, 4, or even 10+ years in school or training?”
“What kind of impact do you want your career to have on your community or the world?”

Share this episode with another parent or teen who might be exploring career options.
Tag us on social media using #PathToPeacePodcast with the career ideas that resonate most for your teen.
Encourage your teen to take one of the tests above—talk through the results and brainstorm next steps together.

"Stuck on Perfect, Lost in Focus: The ADHD & OCD Connection in Kids"29 Mar 202500:21:53

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I'm your host Stephanie Buckley, an AMFT, Solution-Focused Marriage & Family Therapist specializing in ADHD, OCD, and Addiction. I  explore how perfectionism, hyperactivity, inattention, and compulsions manifest in preschool and kindergarten-aged children.

Recognizing the early signs of ADHD and OCD in young children can be difficult, as young kids often lack the words to describe what they’re experiencing. Yet, early intervention can make all the difference in helping children manage anxiety, improve focus, and build emotional resilience.

Using the DSM-5 criteria, real-life examples, and a Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) approach, this episode provides practical tools for parents and educators to create a supportive, structured environment for children struggling with focus, anxiety, and rigid behaviors.

Tune in to discover:
The difference between perfectionism and OCD-driven compulsions
How ADHD impacts attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity in young kids
Real-life examples of what ADHD & OCD look like in a classroom or home setting
Solution-Focused strategies to foster self-regulation and emotional resilience

Using Solution-Focused Therapy, small shifts—such as deep breathing, sensory grounding, and structured routines—can create a safe and structured environment where children can thrive both at home and in the classroom.

"When Parents Align, Kids Shine: The Lasting Impact of Parenting as a Team"29 Mar 202500:17:41

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast, I'm your host, Stephanie Buckley, AMFT Marriage and Family Therapist, who specializes in ADHD, OCD and Addiction. In today's episode I explore  the power of parenting with a united front and how it impacts a child’s emotional security, executive functioning, and behavior.

When parents consistently support each other’s decisions, they provide a structured, predictable

 environment that helps children develop:
 Emotional intelligence & self-regulation
 Respect for authority & boundaries
Executive functioning skills like problem-solving & impulse control
Stronger social and relationship skills

This episode will help you understand:

Why inconsistency in parenting creates confusion & anxiety
How undermining each other affects a child’s trust & decision-making
Real-life examples of parenting conflicts & how to resolve them
5 actionable strategies to build a strong, united parenting front

If you’ve ever struggled with disagreeing on rules, discipline, or decision-making, this episode will give you practical tools to create consistency, teamwork, and a peaceful home environment.

 Key Takeaways

Consistency Builds Confidence – When kids see their parents align, they feel secure and understand expectations.
Avoid Undermining Each Other – Contradicting a partner in front of a child teaches manipulation instead of cooperation.
Healthy Conflict Resolution Matters – Parents don’t always have to agree, but they should discuss disagreements privately and present a unified message.
Structure & Predictability Help Kids Thrive – A strong parenting team provides the foundation for strong executive functioning, problem-solving, and emotional stability.
Lead by Example – Children model what they see. Show them how teamwork, respect, and compromise work in action.

But, I’ve Tried Everything: And Nothing Has Worked So Far!! When ADHD and Anxiety Take Over The Home!!29 Mar 202500:19:31
Welcome back  to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast, I'm your host, Stephanie Buckley, an AMFT, Solution Focued Marriage and Family Therapist, who specializes in ADHD, Anxiety and Depression.

Do your mornings with your child look like this?

  • You're running late, and your 10-year-old is refusing to get dressed, yelling that school is “stupid” and slamming the door.
  • Your teen rolls their eyes when asked to join a group project, mutters something sarcastic, and retreats into silence.
  • Or maybe your young adult keeps putting off registering for classes and says they’re just “not ready yet,” even though deadlines are coming fast.

Sound familiar?

It might look like defiance, laziness, or even overconfidence… but what if underneath all of that, it’s actually anxiety? Especially in kids, teens, and young adults with ADHD, anxiety can wear a lot of different masks—and often gets misread.
